  • This is one way to speed up the Potato 'chitting' process. Check out these Potatoes after just two weeks. If your potatoes seem reluctant to chit or your running a bit late and want to speed things up, you may want to give this a shot.

I want to thank you for your superb tip on speed chitting potatoes. A month ago I began chitting a handful of potatoes in my kitchen, the "normal" way. After two weeks, there WERE some chits appearing, but it was all painfully slow. Then I watched your video and straight away put those same spuds into some compost and in a dark bag. Today, two weeks later - I´ve just had a look and there´s no contest. They´re all well on their way and one even has stems about two inches high! Next I´ll be putting them into yoghurt pots to get some plants properly going before finally planting them in some 10" buckets in the Home Grown Veg manner. More power to Home Grown Veg and to yourself and the splendid Molly!

Hello Russell. If you leave a potato covered in compost, indoors, for a bit longer it comes out with dreadlocks! It's a fun thing to show the kids especially if they draw a face on the potato. Check this out: ua-cam.com/video/IMwCX8yDTFw/v-deo.html

Thank you Jim. Fascinating. I was planning to put these into yoghurt pots this morning to get some small plants started and to then transplant them into buckets in a couple of weeks time. While the "rasta" didn´t win, I am impressed by the SIZE of the results from that spud. So, methinks I´ll hang on another week or so to see if I can rasta these spuds, THEN pot them up! My long term game plan is to have a rolling programme of spuds started out week by week, so that by August we´ll have home grown spuds ready to harvest each week until Christmas. Like you, my space and other gardening circumstances mean that I HAVE to improvise and your methods suite me down to the ground. I´m also in Mexico, but that´s another story! By the way, I teach gardening to kids in junior schools here, to try to get them to understand the origin of their food and to make healthy dietary choices. I´ll certainly be setting the kids up to have some rasta competitions as a result of your efforts! @@HomeGrownVeg

Yes Jim, that´s the idea that you´ve given me - a Rasta spud competition . .. Who can start off the most impressive hairies? and ultimately, who can produce the best crop from them? I´ve had kids grow spuds in bags plenty of times. They go bananas on harvest day, "hunting for gold" ripping the bag open. Then we cook them and of course, eat them. Meawhile I´ve had their 30 year old school teachers looking on baffled, not realising that this is how potatoes grow!!!! Basically there´s absolutely huge ignorance of Nature and how food gets to their plates, here in Mexico. I´m on gibbonrussell@gmail.com if you want to exchange more thoughts and ideas. I may be wrong but YOU strike me as an ex teacher - your growing and your filming are so methodical and clear. All the very best.@@HomeGrownVeg

This is a great way to Chit! Unsure if it’s the proper chit for a good crop. They say it’s ‘supposed’ to chit in light n cool temp. It’s supposed to come out short and stumpy and greenish. Not white.
I more or less did this method 6months ago(found chitted in cupboard) and harvested two different occasions and the crop was really poor.
I’m going to try the green chits this time.

The wife cleared the provisions out and left a bag of potatoes in the basement. Nice surprise so many fully grown stems from eyes or chits. Really cool.
I vermicompost veggie scraps in the basement and must note that from potato peels i have s mall potatoes growing of themselves right in the dark compost with very little root and stem. It produced a hslf dozen 1 inch diameter potatoes. It's too early to put them out just now.

I took some potatoes from the grocery (2 white, 2 red, 2 purple) and started them as you've instructed before... I don't have the yogurt pots like you've used, but I have a bunch of clear plastic deli containers that I used, instead! After 2 weeks, one had broken the surface, but the others looked the same. I was about to be disappointed, when I looked through the sides of the containers and saw that most of them had roots growing throughout! Whoo hoo! I'm going to have the earliest potatoes of the neighborhood this year!!!
Oh, and lovely to see sweet Molly!!!

I buy normal potatoes from my local Aldi in December and leave them in a plastic bag in the airing cupboard until i plant them on January 1st into 15" of moist not wet compost in tubs and leave the tubs in my cold greenhouse. Chitted or not the potatoes are all planted the same day into the very bottom of the tub and normally green shoots appear in March. I cover them with polythene if there is frost forecast but being in the greenhouse they are quite safe and when the risk of frost is past i place the tubs outdoors . I buy Charlotte potatoes which are normally egg sized and always have a good crop of lovely tasting new potatoes long before they are in the shops.

This is how I accidentally started my very first potato. It was a large one we had bought for baking but forgot about, and it appeared to be rotting, so I threw it in the compost bin. Two weeks later I was turning the compost, and found the potato chitted up! So I planted it in an 8 gallon container, and it's now a really large and healthy plant! I'm now getting ready to pot up some small potato plants, (which grew very well in the greenhouse since our winters are pretty mild here) but very nervous about the burying the whole plant thing, covering over the leaves. I do have an empty soda bottle to protect it with, but it's still something I haven't done before.

You are sssooo inspiring (I feel an experiment coming on!)! Here in the states, they want to keep the potatoes in the grocery stores from chitting, so they spray them (except the red ones because they hardly ever chit in the stores). I'm going to do my own experiment now. Store bought golds, whites, and reds, are going to be put into water, into compost, and left in egg crates... to see if even the sprayed ones will chit in compost or water. Have never tried this before. I'll let you know after a couple weeks what happened.

I have got an LED light in my plastic greenhouse and a heater so there will be no frost problem in there. Just hoping they will be ready to go out into buckets after the last frost and not before. That is my only worry really that they will be to big for the buckets. Fingers crossed

Arthur, I hope you are not buying them at the grocery store. If you live here in the states, they are sprayed with something so that they WON'T chit (except the red ones). They last longer on the shelf that way. Go to a Lowes or Home Depot and get a small box if seeding potatoes. After planting and you've dug them up, save a few of the best ones for next year. Keep them cool, dry, and in the dark, until 2 weeks before you're ready to plant them, THEN do what HGV just did to get them to chit. Good luck to you!

Seems to me that chitting isn't needed at all. Wouldn't putting them in the ground with compost do the same thing, provided the ground is warm? Then again, the potatoes that I saved from last year, purple viking and red norland, have chits that are 1"+ just from being stored in my garage in Southern Wisconsin. I just don't have enough saved to plant, so I had to buy more seed potatoes. I'll give your method a try.

      @HomeGrownVeg  2 роки тому

Hello Martyn. Chitting's not that important its just something we do. When the 'times right' potatoes will start to chit all by themselves, its what they do. At this point they are probably 'indoors' where its a little warmer and still too cold to plant them out. The chits naturally get bigger. I think the reason you don't see Sarpo's in shops is their lack of uniformity. Some of these potatoes are just too big. If you want to grow some you will need to purchase seed potatoes. Jim.

Stright horse manure 😵 that'll burn them badly . . . . I've learned the hard way too... But there's still hope... With the same moisture level as they're surroundings, don't bother the root system but take out and add soil that's not manure, gradually mix it into the root system, just as long as the moisture levels are the same it shouldn't kill them, AND they'll not only live, it'll grow up and add new leaves and they won't be curled 1,2 you can at this time take off the ones that are curled so you won't be feeding them. 😁🤗

probably going to sound stupid here, but why cant they just be put directly in the bucket then? they are in the dark, they covered with compost, whats the difference between the bag and the bucket??? plus they wont need to be disturbed

Hello Paul. I chose to do it in the bag to lock in any moisture. Check this out, its just another way of doing things : ua-cam.com/video/M5t9gjJbDs8/v-deo.html

Not really a fair test. To chit potatoes you need warmth and some moisture, the bagged potatoes certainly got that but the ones in the egg carton were left out to dry. Would rather see a test with the carton potatoes in a sealed plastic bag to retain moisture.

It was never meant to be fair Mike. Lots of gardeners stand seed potatoes in egg cartons. This is a quicker way to get potatoes to chit. Its more of a comparator than a test. Thanks for your comment. Jim.
