I love thismachine. It reminds me of the workflow of my first sampler (tha ASR10), the screen was not really a GUI, and with time you almost didn't use it, you worked mostly with your ears..
I got mine a few weeks ago. I posted a few videos with lofi house/hip hop already, exploring the pattern sequencer mainly. It's great and better than what many people think.
Definitely agree with what you said, I really have been enjoying the pattern sequencer and it’s been very intuitive with my workflow as I’m getting the hang of it day by day.
That skip back feature is impressive for audio jamming. The MPC only does its version (retrospective record) when using midi. Hopefully they expand that to the audio side in a future firmware update. Congrats on the new gear. If you're not already aware of other SP assassins on UA-cam, I can't recommend Sarah The Illstrumentalist enough. She's a wizard with it and has such chill vibes. I would love to see what you can do when you get your hands on one of these since the sound that you have in your production has a unique feel to it. This goes perfect with your style in my personal opinion.
Yeah I don't think it will replace most studio centre pieces like the Live or MPC One, however I'm seriously impressed with how capable it is even on its own. And yes, it's probably the ultimate FX box you could get. The older SP-404s are pretty much just as useful for that, even when the SP-404 MK2 is a very obvious update improving in all areas imaginable and then some. It's a bit pricey for me right now, but should be a solid choice as a companion to an MPC.

I'm hyped on the pattern mode on the MKII. Saving up for one. The resample method is fun for certain things, mostly I build segments or process sounds or rhythmic segments, but ultimately I'm really excited to build song sketches more thoroughly on the go. The drum sequencing and pattern workflow overall is so much better on the MKII, so I'm hyped. The SP sound design and composing works for me because it all goes to my Ableton session at the end. Immediacy is most important for me and a fairly flexible sequencing capability to be able to get my 4-16 bar ideas out and be able to morph and mangle QUICKLY.

I just wanna say I appreciate the angle you put the sp404 mk2 on your table. So many times I don't get a good idea of the size of these devices but this one like really puts it in perspective. I feel like I get a better estimate/measurement of how big the thing is.

I bought my SX right before they announced the MKII lol. Was gonna sell the SX immediately, but I decided I want to keep both and play with them together.

Love my mk2 but my beats usually get stuck on it vs on my mpc I just easily export to a file and I'm good to go. Also I can track out with the push of a few buttons. Haven't quite found my flow with the mk2. It's It's blast to use tho, enjoy the notepad analogy.

all 404s were critisized for being transparent, they add no dirt, just passing signal through them. the og just narrows down the stereo depth and thats almost inaudible even after resampling the same sound for 10 times, thats the conversion in sampling through the inputs/ resampling. if you add samples from a cf card its even cleaner. the dope sound you refer to its the fx....

Sadly, I ordered mines the first week of November. And I’m still waiting. My SW rep told me second week of Feb, I checked on it (3rd week). To be told, they now have NO IDEA.🤬🤬🤬 Fortunately, waiting on my S2400 when that came out gave me more tolerance to delays. But, seeing all these new arrivals does sting a bit. I’m not gonna lie, I really do love my 404 but my MPC is where is all at and the 404 compliments my MPC wonderfully. It is an awesome pair but my MPC is my main machine no doubt.

Yes, I hardly ever use that function since it’s more for midi notes on the grid but it doesn’t compare to the skit back on the 404 with audio. I would love to see some audio skip back on the mpc some day hopefully 🙏🏽
great vid,much love ! One question : In sp404 in pattern mode,you have to quantize individually your drumkit (kick,hihat for example) Whenever i tried to lay down them all at once i struggled a lot :p In the mkii version, can you play it all at once ,like the Mpc one ? :D

Grate observation, I’m uploading a video this week on how I have this setup with the live 2, there is a few unique setups we can work around but most of the time I just have the stereo output of the mpc going in to the 404. I will drop this video latter this week showing the few options because if you have an mpc mk2 there are a few hacks
Would be cool if the new mpcs came out with a 2000xl emulator like the 3000 and 60 one . Would be cool if they updated the 3000 and 60 ones too to sound more like those machines
The first thing I noticed was the bad sound: my imported 44.1 samples all sound like 30 kHz or even lower... But maybe that's why all LoFi producers love that thing ;)

But I don't consider digital aliasing as a beautiful distortion/saturation. I find it rather weak from a company like roland. I had the same problem with the 1010 Blackbox, but there you can turn on Hi-Q mode. They say it's 48 kHz, but it sounds like half of it. 12-bit like old samplers would be better. Or let the user decide if he wants with the built in effects like vinyl, tape or distortion...
can you run sound into both inputs and then have all the fx apply to both the inputs and all the internal SP samples? I’m wondering if the SP404mk2 is a good end-of-chain fx processor that I can put a synth through and combine with drum loops and such. Any answers/thoughts/ideas highly appreciated
Have you had the issue of having a sample chopped into separate samples and assigned them to a mute group and while sequencing them in pattern mode the audio in either of the samples will drop out sporadically while the sequence is in playing?
I have not had that issue happened to mine, the only issue I’ve noticed is when I tried to add a sub kick at the end of a sequence bar I notice it will disappear or it doesn’t show up at all which is weird, it almost seems like it’s quantizing even though I have it set to no Quantize. I hope they’re able to address these minor issues on a firmware since it’s still at a very early firmware
@@malobeats yeah I had that too I thought it was because I had a weak sequence grid strength. Who knows?! Hopefully these will be things of the past as future updates are released. I to share the same sentiment and reasons for picking this up. My SX is my most loved and hated piece of gear. The mkii fix a lot of that frustration feature wise. Pairing it with my Live2 retro will be nice.
@@malobeats I think I figured it out. This strength was turned down on the quantize. When I rerecorded the sequence with the quantize on full strength, it didn't/doesn't do it anymore. Maybe this will work for you.
Cool sampler, but still not as good as the sp555. Sorry, not sorry :) ALSO what you’re referring to as a “certain sound” it imparts when running audio through it - it’s just the analog to digital and digital to analog conversion. One great selling point of the sp555 is that the usb in and out eliminates any of that mud by doing a pure digital transfer. The sp505 has a spdif output for a similar thing, and of course the sp404mkll also has a usb in/out similar to the sp555. I’d recommend using that rather than the rca in and out if you don’t want all your beats to sound like you put a wool blanket over them or low passed all the highs down to 7k…. It’s cool sometimes, but not on every single thing you do
That’s been my main sampler for a few years all that changed when I got the MPC one since it could do mostly everything and more but I still have it and I still make it worth it every once in a while since it does have a unique sound that is unmatched. I’ll definitely be posting more contact with this
I got mine from zounds.com and I purchased it on the third day it was announced so I know they’ve been pretty backed up with shipping them out hopefully they could get them out sooner.
Unfortunately there is no side chain and it does not look like they will add it from what I’ve read but there is a few workarounds that might give it a bit of a pump in affect
@@malobeats it cant be that hard for them to add a simple envelope effect that makes a pad have priority over other pads. otherwise you have to go in and lower attack for every sound you want ducking and then raise it again when dont. So annoying for an otherwise perfect box
@@AUTOxMATIK I definitely agree, I just saw an interview with one of the developers from Roland and they did ask him this question and it sounds like from his response they wanted to keep it like the older SPs that never had side chain so people can have that authentic sound. I personally love to have some type of side chain feature myself but it doesn’t seem like they will add it :/
This would pair up with any doll or machine I feel this is a great companion as an extra piece for any other device for the sounds that it has within it.
I sold my mk2, it's trash 🗑, people will realise this unfortunately, the lousy 2 hours of battery life quickly degraded to 40 mins, the pads are awful compared to mpcs, the vinyl sim does not sound the same a 404 or 303 and neither do any of the effects - they are all off, it's straight trash. Sad but these things happen.

Please do a course for the Mk 2 to Mpc for beginner Mk2 users.. I’d buy it on day one.

Yes, I hardly ever use that function since it’s more for midi notes on the grid but it doesn’t compare to the skit back on the 404 with audio. I would love to see some audio skip back on the mpc some day hopefully 🙏🏽

In sp404 in pattern mode,you have to quantize individually your drumkit (kick,hihat for example)
Whenever i tried to lay down them all at once i struggled a lot :p
In the mkii version, can you play it all at once ,like the Mpc one ? :D

Do you run sound out from your MPC to your SP? I was thinking of getting this with the live 2 but heard they can't be used together in standalone
Grate observation, I’m uploading a video this week on how I have this setup with the live 2, there is a few unique setups we can work around but most of the time I just have the stereo output of the mpc going in to the 404. I will drop this video latter this week showing the few options because if you have an mpc mk2 there are a few hacks
Would be cool if the new mpcs came out with a 2000xl emulator like the 3000 and 60 one . Would be cool if they updated the 3000 and 60 ones too to sound more like those machines

The first thing I noticed was the bad sound: my imported 44.1 samples all sound like 30 kHz or even lower... But maybe that's why all LoFi producers love that thing ;)
Grate observation, i’m glad you mentioned this and you’re absolutely right I feel as some of the producers out there really enjoy that sound which is not going to be for everybody but definitely explains why a lot of Lo Fi producers enjoy this machine. But I don't consider digital aliasing as a beautiful distortion/saturation. I find it rather weak from a company like roland. I had the same problem with the 1010 Blackbox, but there you can turn on Hi-Q mode. They say it's 48 kHz, but it sounds like half of it. 12-bit like old samplers would be better. Or let the user decide if he wants with the built in effects like vinyl, tape or distortion...

can you run sound into both inputs and then have all the fx apply to both the inputs and all the internal SP samples? I’m wondering if the SP404mk2 is a good end-of-chain fx processor that I can put a synth through and combine with drum loops and such. Any answers/thoughts/ideas highly appreciated

Have you had the issue of having a sample chopped into separate samples and assigned them to a mute group and while sequencing them in pattern mode the audio in either of the samples will drop out sporadically while the sequence is in playing?
I have not had that issue happened to mine, the only issue I’ve noticed is when I tried to add a sub kick at the end of a sequence bar I notice it will disappear or it doesn’t show up at all which is weird, it almost seems like it’s quantizing even though I have it set to no Quantize. I hope they’re able to address these minor issues on a firmware since it’s still at a very early firmware
@@malobeats yeah I had that too I thought it was because I had a weak sequence grid strength. Who knows?! Hopefully these will be things of the past as future updates are released. I to share the same sentiment and reasons for picking this up. My SX is my most loved and hated piece of gear. The mkii fix a lot of that frustration feature wise. Pairing it with my Live2 retro will be nice.
@@malobeats I think I figured it out. This strength was turned down on the quantize. When I rerecorded the sequence with the quantize on full strength, it didn't/doesn't do it anymore. Maybe this will work for you.

Cool sampler, but still not as good as the sp555. Sorry, not sorry :) ALSO what you’re referring to as a “certain sound” it imparts when running audio through it - it’s just the analog to digital and digital to analog conversion. One great selling point of the sp555 is that the usb in and out eliminates any of that mud by doing a pure digital transfer. The sp505 has a spdif output for a similar thing, and of course the sp404mkll also has a usb in/out similar to the sp555. I’d recommend using that rather than the rca in and out if you don’t want all your beats to sound like you put a wool blanket over them or low passed all the highs down to 7k…. It’s cool sometimes, but not on every single thing you do

It’s a mono signal for a mic or guitar input, I usually connect my microphone to that jack

Your Xl if u still have it make some beats on it , you only made one video , if u say is a great machine Why not use it .
That’s been my main sampler for a few years all that changed when I got the MPC one since it could do mostly everything and more but I still have it and I still make it worth it every once in a while since it does have a unique sound that is unmatched. I’ll definitely be posting more contact with this

Compared to the previous 404 this is a huge improvement.
Roland really should just come out with an SP 404 effect unit (only). I.e without the pads and sequencing and make it half price.

No sidechaining
Unfortunately there is no side chain and it does not look like they will add it from what I’ve read but there is a few workarounds that might give it a bit of a pump in affect
@@malobeats it cant be that hard for them to add a simple envelope effect that makes a pad have priority over other pads. otherwise you have to go in and lower attack for every sound you want ducking and then raise it again when dont. So annoying for an otherwise perfect box
@@AUTOxMATIK I definitely agree, I just saw an interview with one of the developers from Roland and they did ask him this question and it sounds like from his response they wanted to keep it like the older SPs that never had side chain so people can have that authentic sound. I personally love to have some type of side chain feature myself but it doesn’t seem like they will add it :/

I'm never selling my mpc 2000xl nor my akai s950, these new toys are cool but don't sound creamy as old stuff.
I sold my mk2, it's trash 🗑, people will realise this unfortunately, the lousy 2 hours of battery life quickly degraded to 40 mins, the pads are awful compared to mpcs, the vinyl sim does not sound the same a 404 or 303 and neither do any of the effects - they are all off, it's straight trash. Sad but these things happen.
