  • *I'll be live in the chat at 12:15 PM ET on 12/8/2020 to answer any questions!
    In this video, I will compare all of the alcohol markers I have so you can decide what's best for your needs. All of the markers shows are still available and truly there is an alcohol marker for everyone. I am working on digitizing my spreadsheet with links to the product and reviews so you can easily find the info you need and I can update it as I try more markers. I will put a * next to my faves but none of these markers are bad. We all have different needs and budgets. I hope this is helpful!
    A couple of things... I refer to average prices people typically pay online, not MSRP so if you are going into a big box art store like Micheals, Joann or Hobby Lobby you will want to bring a coupon as their regular prices are outrageous if they even have the sets you want. Also, I have reviews of most of these markers on my blog and UA-cam channel if you want to do more research. Open stock means you can buy markers one at a time.

    Thank you for such an informative comparison/contrast video. It's always so easy in the art community to default over to Copic or Ohuhu (as the cheaper alternative) but I like how you proved that there's a vast cornucopia of choices on the market. I cut my teeth on the Caliart markers myself (which still work great for me) but then graduated over to Ohuhu, Arteza and then Copic. This video makes me want to dig out my old sets and start using them again, though. LOL

      Most markers will take any replacement nib. I have replaced my stampin up nibs with the Arteza nibs and I like them much better now. But you need to soak the nib in alcohol before replacing.. I used 91%.

    Thanks for doing this Lindsay. I have the first improved version of the spectrum noir but I got them when their really wasn’t anything on the market but those and copics and I couldn’t afford copics. But I have small hands and arthritis in them to boot so some of the newer options are much more attractive. I may be able to justify buying new markers to myself by saying that I don’t have brush markers but then again the cost of some of the other markers (like the specials bianyo is having!) make even the chisel/bullet points attractive too. Can’t wait to get your spreadsheet for reference!

    Thank you SO much for this video! My favorites are the Blick Studio brush markers; they are SO smooth and blend so well. And thank you very much for noting which brands have the "bouncy" nibs like the Copics. Will have to try some of those.
    Wish this video had been available before I bought those awful Blick Illustrator markers! I only ordered them because I thought they had bullet nib instead of a brush nib, and because of the sale price. You're so right about them.

    My goodness thank you so much for such a great, informative video on the differences on the markers. I have been struggling because I see everyone using the copic, especially on card videos, but darn they are expensive. I appreciate you giving so many options!!

    • @evening6402
      @evening6402 3 роки тому +2

      There are any number of really great marker brands out there. Some, like Shinhan and Winsor & Newton Promarkers, are priced as much, or almost as much as Copics. The big difference is that, if you keep your eyes open, you can find those brands discounted on online vendors, sometimes by several dollars, whereas you virtually *never* find discounted Copics.
      I think the Copics are popular with card crafters because the Sketch markers are particularly effective at adding color to small areas. But, if you're experienced with using alcohol-based markers, controlling ink shouldn't be a problem necessitating purchase of Copic markers costing $6 to $8 each. Shinhans are excellent, & Jerry's Artarama is currently offering them for $2.49 to $2.79 each. Prismacolor makes a marker identical to its Premier bullet/chisel tip, but with its chisel tip replaced by a brush. They retail at Blick for $4.09, but if you buy 12 or more, they're $2.95 each. Even if you're not terribly experienced, these will work as well, or better, than Copics, for half the price.

    Lindsay, Thanks for all the work you have done to help us make informed decisions on alcohol markers. I have the Chameleon markers they are so different that they need their own category. There is much more information on these markers that needed to be touched on in comparison. As you have said these markers are not for everyone as there are several features to consider. There is a learning curve if you are using regular alcohol markers. On the Chameleon UA-cam channel, there are informative demonstrations on how to use the pens and different techniques. It is an investment but you are purchasing fewer markers but you can do so much more with them.
    These markers are artist-grade with many unique features that set them apart from the others. One pen can give you 8 different tones depending on how long you fuse with the mixing chamber. The tones can go from nothing or barely there to full strength. There are over 1200 different combinations you can make with these pens and with the colour tops. I mainly do floral art which makes these markers invaluable for the unbelievable perfect blends. I can achieve a watercolour look which is great for flowers and backgrounds. The brush nib is a Japanese nib they have a fine point and have a smaller nib there is a bullet nib that can be fused as well. You only need to purchase these pens once as all parts and ink are replaceable. Extra nibs are included with your purchase of the sets. How I store these long markers is in a large pencil case with 3 large pencil slots that will hold one pen. When purchasing a case measure the width and length to make sure it is long enough and can close with the zipper.
    I hope this information is helpful when thinking of investing in a set of alcohol markers.

    This was so helpful. My collection is mostly Copic & slowly I will keep adding but I did buy a set of I think 30 Ohuhu & they work great. I also ACCIDENTLY bought a set of Touch Bool markers whick are bullet & chisel tipped. The learning curve, as you said is much harder but they are juicy & haven't dried out yet. (They're only a year & 1/2 old though). I think all I need are a few more blue greens, yellows and truer greens. 😊 Thanks for all the info!

      Don't know if you saw, but Jerry's Artarama has the ShinHan Touch Twins on sale: $2.79 for the brush, $2.49 for the bullet tip. I figure either Jerry's is discontinuing the line, or ShinHan is upgrading it, because it looks like Jerry's is trying to sell off existing stock.

My classic ohuhu are still working brush they keep making there way over to the kids! This is ok, will keep my eye out for the blickones the first marker you reviewed as I’ve heard some great things about these but Ohuhu is my go to.

    I've really been thinking about treating myself to a set of markers. It's never been my thing, but all those lovely colours are so tempting. After the comments I've seen of late though, and given what you've just mentioned yourself, I think I'm going to hold off until we're out of the woods we're in. Some sets you've talked about here I'm positive I used to see on Amazon (Canada), but no hide nor hair of them now, unless they're buried so deep in the search I'm not seeing them. That's all right. Patience is good for the soul, they tell me. Waiting will encourage me not to spend more money than I need to be spending on another mountain of art supplies. :)

    Great review thank you. I have the Letraset Promarkers in the main but added in some W&N ones to complete colour sets I was missing. The W&N are not as good as the Letraset in my opinion, they don't blend as well and several are very dry from new, whereas my Letrasets are still juicy over 10 years later! A few however, lost their lids when packed away and eventually I will lose more so this was great to explore options, given Letraset Promarkers are no longer made ( and I can't justify getting Copics!). Some great options here!

    I have a basic set of Blick Studio markers (12 pack) and a growing collection of Copic markers. For beginners I suggest Blick Studio markers just to see if you like using alcohol markers. They have a chisel tip and brush tip and are refillable. They are very good and have a good range of colours. However, hands down I prefer Copic sketch and ciao markers, because the brush tip is finer and I can color smaller areas, plus the color range is vast, especially the lighter colors. I still use my Blick markers, I haven’t abandoned them.

    i really love the fine bullet tip on the spectrum noir illustrator markers. i find myself using them for detail all the time. nice firm skinny bullet. love it! Also, The chunky chisel nib with the multi line widths on the prismacolor markers... Chartpak AD markers also use that style nib. I love those juicy, stinky old school markers. I have a really cool pastel set.

    For those of you who have an allerci reaction to the alcohol scent, I would get a headache of it, there is a sub that can be used the same way wich are the memento markers. Wich is a dye based marker and can be used on stamps but they do stain if not cleaned right away. I like them quite a lot. They match the memento inks.

      Yes they do, they are reconfiguring their sets so you can get all the colors buy purchasing the two 48 sets and three 12 sets. If you previously have started your art n fly set with the 48, 24, 12 and 6 packs you probably have all the color or will want to purchase those sets so you don't end up with duplicates. Colors are listed on their website. You can always contact Liz at artnfly if you are not sure what to get, she is so nice.

    Kudos for this excellent and exhaustive review, Lindsay! Not an easy task, given the rapidly expanding marketplace.
    That growth has resulted in lots of lower-cost professional-grade competition for Copics, including Winsor & Newton Promarker, Shinhan Touch, Prismacolor, & Kurecolor Twin S. I’ve used all of them for years, along with less expensive, but very satisfactory markers by Spectrum Noir, Concept, Chartpak Spectra AD, Chameleon, Art-n-Fly, Bic, Sharpie, etc.
    Ink color - saturation, luminescence, and lightfastness - sizes up my “approach” to marker buying. For me, using a Copic Sketch marker is an enjoyable physical experience: a *very* comfortable fit, and a brush that smoothly delivers even ink flow (Shinhan is a close runner-up, but their price has risen to Copic level). But, as a sensory experience, a significant percentage of Copic’s color palette leaves me flat, which is why I use the products of so many different companies, and rarely buy sets. I'm not in complete agreement with you on the Blick Studio markers, finding even color laydown to be elusive. But their purple and violet inks are among the most luminescent (ergo “irresistible”) I’ve seen. It seems I’m destined to buy open stock as long as I continue to insist on that sensory experience.
    Winsor & Newton Promarkers, Shinhan Touch, Prismacolor, & Kurecolor TwinS can be pricey, with many retailers selling them for $4.50 to $8 each. But vigilant shoppers can find *great* deals on the internet. In the past 2 years, I’ve gotten Promarkers for 99 cents (& a few for 49 cents), Kurecolor TwinS for $1.49, Spectra ADs for 99 cents, and Shinhan Touch Twins for 99 cents/$1.99. I even managed to buy Copic Sketches at $4.25 each, and the 25 cc refill inks for $5.99.
    Re: your remark about Blick’s Studio line availability: these markers are actually manufactured by Chartpak, an innovative graphic arts/design supplier around since the 1940s, who introduced the SpectraAD line in 2016. Soon after, Blick switched over from Prismacolor for their Studio Line to the SpectraADs. Aside from their black casings, they're an exact match for Blick’s. What's interesting is, now that Michael's is promoting and charging top dollar for the Spectra AD line, Blick is finally offering decent discounts on their Studio markers.
    P.S. Many thanks for the tip on the substandard Blick "Illustrator" line. You should also know that Copic's Ciao line, likewise, does not perform well. Like many companies these days, Blick and Copic have attached their good names to lousy products to capture the less affluent segment of the market.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      I suspected that blicks were the same as spectra ad markers but I could never get my hands on any to compare. Oddly I did see a reviewer who loved blicks but haded the spectra ads. I have really had great luck with the blicks so it makes me wonder if there was a bad batch somewhere or some markers with an inconsistent fill.
      Now I have not I have not used the copic ciao but they say the nibs are the same as sketch but you say they are inferior, can you explain why? I'm curious.

    They also come in a 52 pen set (30 and 22 set combined) and 30 pen set. They are refillable and the nibs replaceable.
    Also available are 50 colour tops which allow you to go from one colour to another.

    Wow what a amazing video. This takes so much effort and time way more then people realize. Thank you for doing this. The only some what popular marker I didn't see in your list was the Cali art markers. They have the chisel /fine nib big set but recently did a set of brush tips 5o markers for 25.00 usually on sale. I got them and really really really impressed with them as far as blending and the color selection. I wish so much they had more colors. I have the touch 5, prisma brush . Cmky? Skin tone brush markers and brush pitt pens (not alcohol I know) And they are all great but something about that caliart set always is what I want to use over anything else. I love them for coloring in coloring books on that terrible amazon paper the shin han touch markers are horrible on that paper for me. After 3 layers it's too much for the paper and you can't blend anymore it starts looking just like a mess of too much ink that you can't fix and it's like your using water based markers it's just tearing up the paper. Its probably just me but I struggle coloring in coloring books with the touch 5/shin han markers. I know paper is important and I would love to try the blending card paper to compare with card stocks/ marker paper I have tried. It's just so expensive for paper. I want to try the ohuhu to see if they are really similar to these caliart brush markers .. Cali art needs to send you a pack I would love to hear your opinion on them. Oh the cap colors are terrible terrible representation of what the actual color is. That's the only con I have for them. I really enjoyed this video. Great job . I love when you do alcohol marker coloring tutorials those are so helpful learning what colors to use to blend. I wish there were marker coloring classes to take that weren't just for copics. I just want to color amazing pictures like I see on Pinterest lol. It's so Hard.😩

I was so relieved when she went to alcohol and purchased a huge set of Copic’s! I have never head of pegging the cap! I have always heard or posting the cap of a pen, is this marker terminology? I decided to go with Copic’s because of the refills and nib replacement extending the life of the markers. I purchased all of my markers from e-bay and $4.08 was the most I ever paid per marker. Still more expensive than Ohuhu and if I were going into the marker game I might go that route for starting my collection! Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge about markers. I look forward to watching more videos on marker use. Have a lovely day?

    Finally completed my entire Copic Sketch collection this past summer! I also suffer from "complete set syndrome" and that can be such an expensive syndrome! lmao I do love the Copics, but I do find the purples really lacking. There is just no nice vibrant in-between purple. Those in the set are either too de-saturated or go too much into red side and blue side. I've collected a few other purples/violets from other brands to compensate, but some just don't like blending with the Copics that well. I hope eventually they update. Thanks for choosing to use purple in this vid - it gives me an idea of what some other brands have.
    I've also collected the Shinhan Touch Brush sets, the 120 Ohuhu & Skintones sets (I recommend getting both), some Touchthree markers(which are cheap dupes of the Shinhans), and am now working on my Prismacolor Brush and Winsor & Newton brush markers... and those are just my alcohol markers.Whew! I really want to get the Arteza 120 set and Arrtx ALP sets, but keep missing out on the Arteza online. They are always sold out by the time I want to get them.
    Numbering systems seem to be common with a few brands. Did this naming/numbering convention begin with Shinhan?
    Great video! Thanks for all the valuable info. You're awesome and love your work.

      Thanks, I believe so, many brands use shinhan inks. Purples are the hardest color to blend and I think purple inks are unstable, as in they can change when they interact with acid or other chemicals.

      @@thefrugalcrafter You're right: the violets are unstable. Some manufacturers seem more skilled than others at ink mixing those shades, but I've had these issues w/Copic, Prismacolor, and Spectrum Noir for years. It's interesting though: on my swatch sheets, the problem of color breakdown seems to occur more frequently in the violet shades that contain higher quantities of red ink.

    Inexpensive alcohol marker numbering systems! ShinHan Touch like numbering and divergences from it. One of my Covid-times rabbit holes, down which I have gone way too deep. I started out with the original Arteza Everblend 120 set with its seemingly odd numbering (I cracked that code though) and then I wanted to add more, so I started trying to figure out the color number systems. I have the original Arteza Everblend 120 set, the Shuttle Art 121 set, the Shuttle Art 172 set (not exactly the same colors), the Ohuhu 80 color set, and a lot of others that use other color systems - but I have those 4 that use this numbering system.
    ARTEZA EVERBLEND NUMBERING:
    The original Arteza Everblend markers are really just the ShinHan numbering system, but complete including letters (R for Red, YR for Yellow Red, etc) - but with the letters swapped for numbers. Numbers are as follows: 4=Red (R), 94=Yellow Red (YR), 9=Yellow (Y), 59=Green Yellow (GY), 5=Green (G), 25=Blue Green (BG), 2=Blue (B), 82=Purple-Blue (PB), 8=Purple (P), 48=Red Purple (RP), 55=Green Grey (GG), 25=Blue Grey (BG), 15=Cool Grey (CG), 75=Warm Grey (WG), and then it starts to fall apart with their browns and other colors from the grey tone and skintone sets (600s).
    OHUHU BULLET/CHISEL (oval barrel):
    Same as the ShinHan coloring system, but only up to 120 (black). Anything above 120 is definitely not a match to the ShinHan color system, they have completely different color numbers above that - most of the Ohuhus are skin tones whereas the ShinHan system has a lot more pinks, blues, greens, and even purples between 120 and 200 - all lighter colors than in the 1-100 range.
    SHUTTLE ART 121 (Rounded Triangular body, maybe matches the ParKoo in this review?):
    Lots of similarities color wise, but these do not use the same ink formulations as the Ohuhu and Arteza. I found that I liked a lot of the color versions of this set more. I would imagine that many sets with the same body style and cap font will look the same (such as the ParKoo markers in this review). They are largely not interchangeable color wise with Ohuhu or Arteza or even the other square-body Shuttle Art markers. Hue is different enough to matter on many, saturation different enough to matter on some as well. I found this to be amazing as it meant that the Arteza set and this Shuttle Art set had little overlap.
    Max 20-30 colors could be considered dupes.
    SHUTTLE ART 172 (Square Body, look like the "Art Markers" in this review):
    I bought these on a lightning deal assuming they were the same inks as the Shuttle Art 121 set, they are not, but that gives me more colors so I'm OK with it! These are mostly more pastel than the 121 set or the Ohuhus/Artezas.
    Most divergence found in the dark reds, light greens, and light/medium blues. For instance, 67 and 68 across the sets are very different, except for Ohuhu and Arteza which are very, very close, almost a dead on match. I imagine that a lot of this is just how much different factories in China care to match their ink to the actual ShinHan colors. I don't own any actual ShinHan markers (thought I do have their Touch Liners, great pens!!) - but I'd imagine that the bullet/chisel Ohuhus and the Arteza Everblend are probably close to original ShinHan based on swatched color charts I've seen online.
    I wish I could attach pictures here to show examples - but UA-cam doesn't allow picture comments.
    Thank you so much for making such an in depth cross reference video!

    I think if you think about how many times they are refillable you are actually saving money that would add up when it comes to the cheapest markers. If you simply buy a set at a time along with their refills I'm sure it's worth it plus people spend more on buying replacements for those other brands

    I actually bought the Caliart 100 pack of markers off amazon. And it’s great. I love the set and use them. My only complaint is it had a bunch of brown and yellowish colors. And I feel I also don’t have enough purple shades(I want some lighter purples). But there is a bigger pack.

An 11 pack of Molotow Blackliners for 40% off and a 12 pack of Prismacolor Premier, also 40% off. My local Hobby Lobby had a sale today for 40% off all their pen sets over $9.99. Made my Saturday! Its really a personal preference and I'm probably in the minority but I'd go for more colors. That said I have been using alcohol markers for over a decade and I'm used to the hard tips. Brush markers are easier to use tho and tou dont need as many colors to get blends.

    Oh, no! I ordered the Blick Illustrator markers for my 8 year old for Christmas (she requested them after seeing them in the catalog). I have several Blick Studio brush markers (on your recommendation - they are great!), and assumed the Illustrator would be decent quality but small capacity.
    I wonder if the nibs can be changed or refilled?
    I have a small set of Caliart brush markers she and her sister, and they both love alcohol markers. They are nice in the Creatspace/KDP one-sided coloring books, like Hannah Lynn, although that paper seems to soak up a lot of ink.

      I think it's a false economy. The best bet with those is to just use them up before the ink desalinated or return them and get a smaller pack of the blick studios.

    First you stole my heart when you did as many as you could in purple! Alll of them except for a couple of troublemakers LOL I do have a question I will try to make the live tomorrow but I don't know if I can so I'm going to take a chance and ask it here. If you don't mind what type of marker paper do you use? Do you use the Copic Xpress blend it card I think it is, or something else? Thank you so much for all the time and effort that you put into this. I was too heavily invested into Copic sketch when they messed us over with the ink refill prices and amount to switch or I probably would have.

      @thefrugalcrafter  3 роки тому +1

      I use neenah classic creast #80 super smooth in solar white if I am stamping or cardmaking.
      If sketching I use bianyo marker pad (it conserves ink and I can draw fast) or ohuhu marker pad if I want to do more blending. I also like rendr marker sketchbook but there us a step learning curve with that paper.

    Question: Do you prefer brush/chisel or chisel/bullet tips for beginners? Or would you look for brush/bullet tips? Basically going to use them for card making. Beginner here. No markers currently.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 роки тому +2

      The brush tips are easier to use and get soft blends with especially over large areas but you can get good results with any tip variation. A brush bullet version really is ideal for cardmakers as the bullet gets in tight spots with slower ink flow. The best marker with brush bullet is prismacolor or spectrum noir illustrator marker around $4 each (the SN illustrator is refillable tho) but Ohuhu just came out with a pack of 48 bullet brush markers and they are a great value. Tje nibs are not as nice ad the rubbery ones in the other two but they are pretty good and if they fray you can flip them around for a fresh end. That would be my recommendation for a beginner. Another marker I like for stamping is the original triblend markers with the bullet tips because the blends you can make are so good. They just released a brush version but sadly they changed the blending combo colors and theh ate not as good.

    2023 and I came across this video because I have collected all the spectrum noir markers (the original) and came across a hitch and needed to search for alternatives. I completed the set probably about two years ago and we moved a year ago, so my markers were in storage. I decided to swatch them, and wouldn't you know it, five of them have dried up. No problem, I will just get refills. Well, they are no longer listed on Crafter's Companion's website and I cannot find them anywhere in Australia (except for one supplier who had limited supply of two of the colours). I have made the decision to replace the colours with copic matches (or as close to) because 1) they are widely available with reinkers here in Australia, and 2) almost every video or project I watch uses them. Thankfully a few people have done comparisons. It is annoying though, especially as I am one of those who suffers from Full Set Syndrome ha ha. I see you said you wouldn't recommend copics - is that because they are expensive and have reduced the size of their reinkers, or is it because of something else. Thanks for a great video - it was very helpful to me (even if most of the markers are not available to me here in Aus).

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 місяців тому +1

      Mostly because they reduced the size of the reinkers and charge the same price and there is a flaw in the caps produced over the last 2 years which cause the caps to dry up.

      @@thefrugalcrafter I was just curious since they seemed pretty similar to the Ohuhu's but with them being so much cheaper I was wondering if they had less ink or if maybe other corners were cut. I was wanting to expand my collection and I have been torn as to whether I should get the 120 brush set of ohuhu, or just get the new pastel set, or try my luck with the caliart 121 set. @@thefrugalcrafter Yeah, I have been leaning that way too, especially if I can get them before the free fineliner deal ends lol. I just received the Triblend Essentials with bullet nibs a couple of days ago. I’m new to alcohol markers and decided on them because trying to figure out which colors made a good blending combination in other brands was overwhelming and intimidating for a newbie. I’ve really enjoyed them and ordered the “deep” set last night. Can you tell me if the colors in the Spectrum Noir Illustrators correspond accurately with the triblends? The videos I watched comparing the same color number between the original spectrum noir marker and the corresponding triblend marker looked like ink color didn’t come anywhere close to matching. Makes me hesitant to consider ink refills. If you have not compared Illustrator swatches to Triblend swatches, I’d love to see you do that.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 роки тому +1

      I compared my original triblends to my original spectrum noir and found many discrepancies. That said the recently reformulated the inks so any newer markers should match the new inks now being sold. This brand goes through a lot of changes in their product range, it's odd but overall I find the quality to be good and every change they do make seems to be an improvement.

    The thing I'm most curious about is how strong the smell is for each. I wound up getting a set of Chameleons after getting a set of 5 in a grab bag, and realizing that the scent wasn't as horribly overpowering as so many other markers are. I have about a 30 second tolerance for sharpies, where as the Chameleons I can use no problem. Most reviews don't mention the intensity of smell, however, which makes it really difficult to guess which ones I can actually use....

    I've been teaching teens with the cheapest 24 piece set of Touch clones, telling them to use them and abuse them. Then if when they're all out they want to keep coloring with alcohol markers they can buy expensive markers knowing they enjoy the medium.
    People who start new hobbies with the most expensive stuff tend to get performance anxiety and not use them at all because they're afraid to "waste" their supplies.
