Inspired by Feral Woodcraft's video, as well as a few other channels' videos on their top 3 survival tools, i decided to chime in on the matter. Depicting an urban/desert survival scenario, i demonstrate why my choices are my 6 inch Self Reliance Outfitters Ferrocerium Rod, my Self Reliance Outfitters 32oz stainless steel canteen and my Victorinox One-Handed Trekker multitool.

Respect on using YOUR type of knife and not using knives that are “popular” 👍🏽
thank you, i appreciate that!
I don't get how you only have 1900 subscribers. Your channel has become one of my favorites and I live in the eastern woodlands completely different than yours and still love the content. Keep up the great work!
I agree with you 100 percent
+jlen82 thank ye very much! well guys, im alright with my subs, i woudnt wanna be too large where i cant make certain artistic choices or im pressured to do a new video every 2 days to please my large audience because then i wouldnt be able to take my time on my videos and approach them as a small story.
Don't worry as I am watching we are at 10,927
keep er goin!!!
I just recently found your channel and love it. Keep true to yourself, your videos are fantastic. Great style, great content, and very relatable.
update now at 34k
Dude you crushed it as always in the filming department. Absolutely loved the cinematic intro story.
+Outdoor Adventurecraft thank ye very much, im glad ye enjoyed it.
The 'survival' problem is always 'what you have in your pockets' or 'what fits in a small pack'.
There is no one answer. We can add items until we have a 20 pound pack!
Whittled down to three I must say you nailed it. Practical tools that always work. Small and compact. Readily available. Reliable.
Thanks!
Living in Arizona and trying to find likeminded humble humans who understand preparedness in an applicable way to daily city life. My Grandfather was full Cherokee but I lack knowledge on how to survive in the desert where I now live. Thank you a million for your video on yucca root and how to build shelters
It’d be amazing to put together an event in Phoenix teaching a small group how to do a 3 day survival camp
James, I can say with good experience you need more water, and more water and more water if you live in a desert environment. Two of us that worked out field carried 10 gal water jug and was near empty at the end of a 12 hour shift. The temps were 105 in the shade. Good choice in the knife. Keep it coming.
True but running from zombies you may not be able to carry a 10 gal and run fast enough ;)
Love the Victorinox Trekker! I have two of them. Great video!
All very well thought out choices, and explanation ,well done
Great video! I'm rather fond of the Victorinox Hiker Swiss Army Knife, my largest ferro rod and the Stanley Bottle kit featuring some basic cordage tired to it. Thanks guy!
I'm going to the desert and I go by the three's in my kit . I have 3 ways to start fire, 3 knives, and 3 water containers. 1 tarp , 1 sleep pad, 1 wool blanket. Anything else I need I can scavenge. This also makes my kit very light weight. Love the desert and your videos.
I’m enjoying the channel love the desert survival. Thank you
Awesome, thank you!
Outsanding choices! Due to your experience in the field I bet you had no problem coming up with those pics. Shelter can be made or found, cordage made or found, having a fast fire and reliable long term fire method like that huge ferro rod for cold desert nights is better than carving a bow drill set so you can carry a blanket or coordage. Plus your knife has a saw blade for notching etc.. I like the leatherman surge got to have the pliers for wire work. I agree, Those are for sure the TOP 3 choices for down here in the chijuajuan desert southwest if you are only limited to 3 items of course.
I think your choices make perfect sense
The reason most people choose 32oz water containers is because most chemical water treatments are for 32oz of water.
ah, i did not know that. thanks for the info, and thanks for watching!
Cool so I can just double up for the 64 ounce. Thanks
2 32oz as opposed to one 64 gives you the option of having one potable one untreated or one ready to drink one waiting for chlorine to work, whatever, the not putting all your eggs in one basket thing.
Yup! Dat B tru
I think if you can only carry three items for a survival situation, you have done a good job and as you stated they items are very low profile. In the city if you carry a folding knife, people still look at you funny. They are not prepared to make it to their car or home to pick up the EDC or Bug Out bag. Well done Bravo Zulu young man, thank you for posting and sharing.
glad you liked our video!
That was very cool editing. Awesome video.
i am very gald ye enjoyed it, check out my UTG tactical bag review, i do something very similar in that video.
You make a lot of sense James. This was an excellent vid. Thanks.
It is now 2019 so I am late in watching this video. Your choices seem well thought out if 3 is all you get. Lately I have been carrying the Victorinox Rangergrip 79 (big brother to the Trekker). If one watches “Vinnie’s Day Off” and Felix Immler’s videos they will see how useful a folding pocket knife can be in a survival situation, particularly an SAK. Of course, if you get more than 3 items a good reasonable sized fixed blade would be a nice addition. But, I do not feel under-knifed with my SAKs. Good video.
Nicely done. I like your choices, i agree with you on the reasoning for your knife.
+KnifeRev thanks, glad ye liked it!
Great help for us beginners!
im glad ye enjoyed it!
I like your choice of knife. In fact, I own the same knife and have thrown it in the truck, with a large firesteel, a 32 oz. stainless steel canteen with a nesting cup lid and spork, a flashlight with a headband so I can also wear it as a headlamp. All this in a Condor Case with a shoulder strap. I like the idea of the flat grind on the back of the screwdriver as I too have cut myself on the saw as a striker. Thanks for the tip
I like your thinking simple works I also believe in simple basic items well done video
Agreed on the knife and the urban scene. Multitools are the way to go! For again URBAN scenario. Always got mine on my belt. Ferro and stainless steel bottle are a must have !
definitely. i always carry mine every day.
Great video
I like guitar music reminds me of old Western movies
RIGHT ON! Great video, your ideas are helpful for the rest of us.
Glad you like them!
There’s something innately interesting to the filmography. I want to call it “Americana” in a way, with the guitar and architecture, but that’s not quite right. It’s a little bit Fallout, a little bit Dave Canterbury, and a little bit of something I can’t place my finger on. Love your work and this is just another great example of changing up the review platform
I agree on the blade choice James. I rock almost the same blade . Swiss army knife Forester.
I agree with your three choices. Good job.
I really enjoy your videos and channel. Being in NM there aren't a lot of these videos for our area, most are all deep in the eastern woodlands. Keep up the great work showing off what works in the southwest!!
+jeffrey majkrzak thank ye very much, i hope ye enjoy the videos as well as help ye learn about your environment.
I use the 64oz ss bottle. I carry my water in a pair of military 1qt canteens MOLLE'd to my pack, and I can boil enough water at once in the big bottle to fill both. In addition to a large ferro rod like yours, I also carry a magnifying glass lens (I'm sure we all remember setting things on fire with magnifying glasses as kids, lol). It's about 3" diameter and 3/8" thick. I believe it's about 6x. I had an old magnifying glass with a cracked frame and broken handle, so I salvaged the lens. I keep it in my pack in a cloth drawstring bag that came with some Sony earbuds I bought. It's pretty heavy duty glass, and as long as I have sunlight I have a good backup to the ferro rod. 👍
I carry those 3 as well, but my edc has grown to a 2nd tier level that is kept in my vehicle so where ever I am my vehicle isn't far away. That 2nd level kit includes food for 3 days (dehydrated ) , fixed blade green river knife camp type, GI poncho, ruger mkII 4" 22 lr pistol 3 mags and 300rds, extras stuffed here and there is cotton balls, lighters, bullion cubes, drink mixs, teas, I'm still debating adding a crossman1322 22 cal pistol and around 300-400 pellets for small game such as pigeon, doves, rabbits ect even with an added shoulder stock it is a compact weapon.
Sure you need a knife, a trekker, is a good choice, and a way to cook food assuming you have or can obtain some. You need a canteen and some method to purify water. You need a water tight outer garment such as a poncho with hood that can also serve as a wind breaker/shelter. I don't mean make a tent, just wear it and lean back against a tree while setting. A light handy hatchet/whatever for making shelters would be nice. A bedroll. A wide brimmed hat that will shed water. What else is going to depend on local circumstances.
Im a big fan of the multi tool over a fixed blade... Many dont agree with this philosophy and it is rather refreshing to see someone else that shares that opinion as well. 3 items in an urban setting... Yeah, I agree with your choices. Good vids bro... You just got another subscriber.
Good choices - can't knock your reasoning. I also carry a Trekker along with a fire steel. Only difference between you and me is the water bottle. I use a stainless canteen with nesting stainless cup. Virtually the same thing.
I completely agree with your reasoning for your top three tools.
I would chose a locking blade multitool if traveling in an urban big city... Thankfully I am in a rather rural area in the NorthWest so my Blade choice would be/is a 5-7" sheath knife. Been packing one or more since elementary school. Kids get suspended/jail time for what we did every day back then. Guns in trucks, hunting before and after school...almost everyone carried a knife. Nobody went nuts.
That was a "Dragon Magazine" you pulled out of the trash bag!!! I haven't seen that comic strip in over 25yrs!
Great videos. Wonderful style and approach.
thanks for watching! good selection for your environment. i actually jsut pulled out random magazines from that dump pile, its a craxy old ranch that was abandoned in west texas.
Hey man, just to let you know , a stainless 1.1 liter GSI boiler will nest really nice with the 64 oz. bottles. I carry a Klean Kanteen EDC.
The last of us + The Walking dead feeling and I love this. Cheers.
I kept expecting a zombie hand to pop out when you were walking through the town. Good video! Very well shot. - Oh, Nice choices as well.
thansk so much lol yeah we tried really hard to give this video some great suspence
You have some really good choices.Very Common Sense
Solid brother. Great kit.
+Wingman115 thanks jon!
Yeah, my Victorinox Camper is the knife I use the most by a long chalk and a BCB Crusader 2 canteen cup (1 litre capacity). I liked your use of the old magazine as tinder. An old newspaper was a must have item of kit when I first started, it's free, you can dry your boots, pack eggs in a mess tin, to wrap food stuffs in, as tinder while you sort out the natural stuff, answer the call of nature, I've even used 3/4 as a sleeping mat. The bush craft ''purists'' don't seem to like it these days but some will buy tinder from a store?? Thanks for the vid!
I think you made great choices and gave great reasons for those choices. I am liking your channel a lot and am looking forward to seeing more videos from you in the future. Thank you my friend.
+campfire52 thnak ye very much, im glad ye enjoy my content, ive got plenty awesome new material coming soon!
Smart move using that knife, has many uses other than just a blade and its better to use what your used to. I have the "trekker" as my edc. Big knives are not legal to carry in some states. I would have picked the same 3 things you choose. I have a canteen and cup though, I'm in florida though, water everywhere so I don't need so much storage space for water. Good video, keep them coming.
Awsome 3 picks, fire, water and a Good folder, everything else can be aquired in an urban setting. I really enjoyed watching, Keep it up!
thanks for watching!
I really like the first part of your video. You made some good choices as well. I often bring a knife almost identical to that one :)
Thanks for sharing - Martin
+NorwegianWoods thank ye very much! youve got great taste lol SAKs are awesome.
Looked like a great place to grab a rattler for lunch.
I'm pretty sure there is a 'micro film' sprayed on the interior of canned goods, I'm gonna look it up after this. I personally won't eat out of a cooked can for that reason. Back in a minute ...
Yep, can liners contain BPA and PVC, among other chemicals.
Wasn't hard at all to reaffirm what I thought I remembered from long ago. Don't eat straight out of a can folks, especially not if you have used the can to cook!!!
1. EDC (yes EVERY day) LT Wright Next Gen, Leatherman Wave, Light my Fire Ferro, applied green stropping compound to belt.
2. Klean Kanteen.
3. GSI nesting cup, I really like the longer handle.
That would my choices also, it covers all the needs. I like that location, cool old farm structures. I would definitely set up camp under that old barn shed, if the framer did not object. Thanks James.
+Garland N thanks! theres was actually a dead dog by that barn that was stinking up a storm lol
That would a good reason to build a big fire and burn it. The farmer might thank you for it.
great combo and I love your knife choice!
I love your choice of tools for survival in the desert and the three items you chose is what I would choose also if in that environment. I have two canteens for water and one of them is plastic and the other is metal and the plastic one has a filter in it to help me in keeping water which is fresh. I have a Gerber folding pocket knife which is a nice backup knife for food and wood processing. To start a fire I have two fire steels in my pack and they have the striker on them.
Totally agree it is 2016 and the chances of "our" survival environment is most likely an urban environment vs wildernesses. Plus any self respecting 1800's frontiersman would give anything to have the latest tech vs the existing tech from those times. So the question is more "are you a Bushcrafter or Frontier Reenactor when it comes to implement choice. I truly believe 1800's Frontiersman would choose the latest tech vs traditional. Just my opinion.
i completely agree, they made do with what they had available at the moment but if they had the opportunity for superior or more resourceful gear, they would take it in a heartbeat.
Coming late to this party, but, the outdoorsmen, explorers, pioneers, & military of yesteryear took complete advantage of the best gear that was available to them that they could afford. And for anyone to claim that it was good enough for my great grandfather, then it's good enough for me, is missing the point of survival in the bush. We are not reenactors, we want to survive. If you want to do it the way it was done 100 years ago, then you are play acting. To plan on surviving, enjoying a camping trip, getting through a natural disaster or a canoe trip gone bad...you want the best equipment available, and lots of it. The nice thing about living in the times that we find ourselves is that the choices for excellent equipment was never better. Why hinder yourself with stuff that our ancestors could only dream about, when modern tech, in tents, knives, water purifiers, etc. is only a "click" away?
@@blueeyeswhitedragon9839 these days a multi tool is a no brainer
nice choices and very nice in-depth knowledge. I always enjoy your videos James. Josh
thank ye very much josh! glad ye enjoyed it!
Good picks, I actually picked up the one handed tracker on your advice and I am very pleased with it as a back up folder.
glad you like it. ive carried my trekker on my belt everyday for the last 6 years.
new subscriber. don't let this go to your head but you have the best diverse show on UA-cam right now in my opinion. lol. enjoying your show man.
I really like your down to earth approach on bushcraft en survival. Realistic and accessible for many people. And your video's are fun to watch and informative. keep them videos coming.
Greatings,
Wim Wildschut
Just discovered your channel. You made three great choices. I love my one handed trekker.
Awesome! Thank you!
Great choice of items brother. Thanks for the tag. I'll get the hamster wheel in my melon spinning and get a video up soon.
+Irish Zombie Nation awesome.
Great vid. For me, a knife, firesteel, and container are THE top 3 selections. The question is what would anyone choose that would not be one of these three? I guess if you knew you were going to be stranded on a desert island with no water source, you better have a seawater desalinator. But aside from special cases, I think you selected the items to have on you.
Excellent choices!
Great knife choice. I have that ferro-rod and it's also an excellent choice. Where I disagree with you is how you count the other TWO items as a SINGLE item when it's clear that they are not one piece. They may be sold together as a package, but I think you would have to pick either the cup or the bottle, but not both. Therefore making this video your top FOUR Survival Items and not your Top 3 Items. Some may agree with me & some may not, but it's just my opinion. Great video even though!
Another great vid...keep up the great work James!
+deckard313 thanks brother!
I'd give you 100 thumbs up for knife choice if I could! I carry the Vic Outrider or Huntsman as my woods EDC. Have you checked out the new Vic Rangerwood 55?? I ALMOST pulled the trigger on one. Very, very nice. Larger locking blade and a huge saw blade. You other 2 items are spot on also.
+Chris Romnes thanks, glad ye liked it! i actually own the Wenger Rangerwood 55, its good, but it does have a few flaws. too large for edc carry, the wooden handles require more care.
The Wenger or the Victorinox Rangerwood? The Vic is new this year.
I jus love ur vids - informative n to the point, including explanations. Love ur background tunes too, nice guitar riffs! Great choices!
+cillaloves2fish glad ye enjoy the stuff, buddy. hope it inspires ye to head outdoors and enjoy yourself.
3 very good choices
Good choices. a SAK is a great choice.
+Robert “FireLion” Winkler always on my side, even when im in my pjs at night, always got it in my pocket.
completamente de acuerdo, yo también hubiera elegido la SAK, lo importante, como mencionas, es la imaginación al usarla, además es bastante versátil, con varias herramientas, saludos.
+Jesus Gonzalez thanks ye very much!
Enjoyed the video and simplicity of the choices. You just a new subscriber
glad you liked it, new video dropping in an hour
Good choices, your videos are top notch 👍🏼
+Jayson Green thanks!
Good reasoning, excellent choices and really cool set/music!
+Steven Boyd thanks, glad ye liked it.
+Steven Boyd Well said, Mr. Boyd.
Good choices only thing to add would be a compact pistol
+Charles Oswald thanks! i agree.
Good choices of items!! The SAK one-handed Trekker is definitely a great choice for its versility!
Good one, James.
+Bo H thanks, brother!
+Junkyard Fox ...and my Trekker arrived in the mail today. I didn't get the one-handed one. Still a nice knife. You're a bad influence, sir. lol!
Excellent video! Excellent music by Cuervo Negro!
Man I absolutely enjoy these videos your putting out!!!! Wow! Alright I'll get going on my three items and tag you in a VR. Appreciate it! I love the desert environment for your films gives it such a sense of isolation and old times. Great job!
+BlackRifle Survival thanks Chris! we actually meant to film in an abandoned factory but it got demolished lol so we just found this spot. i liked it better.
Junkyard Fox I have a few spots like that down here at the Salton Sea, it's almost post apocalyptic but beautiful at the same time.
Great video! I will check out more of your videos. If I had to take a folding knife I think I would prefer a multi-tool for the added benefits of more tools.
+Emmett Reisinger thank ye very much, glad ye enjoyed it!
3 great choices. I like the idea of the swiss army knife. I've carried swiss army blades and tools for years now. They stand up to just about anything.
some of my favorites. i always give swiss army knives as gifts.
great video! i love the scavenging section in the beginning and your friend's music is really great. those are some solid choices too. personally, i would carry my leatherman surge instead of a swiss army knife for a one tool option because it is far more versatile. don't get me wrong, i love my saks, but the leatherman opens up a lot more possibilities, especially in an urban environment. having the interchangeable saw is nice as well. i can switch between different types of saw blades for different applications and the extra blades don't take up any room in my kit. the leatherman is definitely more bulky, but i think it's worth it. just some thoughts.
+cap10random i see your point, and the leatherman is an excellent choice, but i seldom use mine, since i dont use pliers often and its a bit heavy, so i remain loyal to my swiss, but thats just my personal taste, leatherman is great though for urban survival.
The setting for that video was awesome man! good choice of gear as well! I'll make my tag video soon!
+BearHart Outdoors get to it, bro lol
Great video man. so much more entertaining then just a bag dumb.
+BigEddie1970 thank ye very much, im glad ye enjoyed it!
Love, Love, Love the video man. Working on my video now!
glad ye liked it, cant wait to watch your response!
I liked the three choices you made and I also think that in an urban area those would be superior to a lot of what I see people carrying.
thansk for watching, i agree.
Great video, I like your intro.
I agree with your thinking of the 3 items, even the knife.
lovin your vids man...like I'm watching a movie. awesome intros
thanks im glad you enjoyed it. we have a thrunite flashlight review video coming soon where well be filming in a 'what if' scenario as well.
I personally don't agree with your knife choice, but i respect it. I respect it because you put thought into it. My pocket knife choice would be the leatherman Signal multi-tool. A good set of pliers are indispensable.
i shouldve been more general with my choice, id say multi tool in general. the exact model would jsut depend on the person. i have a leatherman, but honstly, i dont use it nearly as often as my swiss army. thanks for watching, glad ye liked it!
Cool top three, I personally like the knife and am currently pricing and comparing some similar. I'm interested in what type of bag you were carrying and what elae is in it.
+John Mireles its the UTG messenger bag. i have a review on it, check it out.
Love the video, your three choices, and even the knife. I don't carry a Swiss Army knife, but I do carry a belt folder. Too many think first of batoning with a knife. That's my last thought. If I have to baton with a knife, it means someone has stolen everything I have on me, but somehow overlooked my knife. I carry a knife and a small hatchet on my belt, and a Silky Pocket Boy in my pocket. I love the knife, I love the hatchet, I love the saw, and I know how to use all three. I don't need to risk breaking or dulling my knife by beating it with a club. Anyway, my three cents, and the video was great. Geeze, make a movie.
+James Ritchie thank ye very mcuh, glad ye enjoyed the video and my choices. given a choice, ill always carry a folding saw and several blades but if i had jsut one, my swiss army is my choice, i prefer the versatility. if ye liked this video, be sure to chec kout my UTG bag review, its my personal favorite.
Hello 👋 my outdoors friend, greetings from Northern California. I have chosen the same three items. For a container, I have the 40 Oz. Klean Canteen, a fero rod which also has a magnesium strip. For a cutting tool, for 27 years, I have carried the Victorinox Officer Suisse multi tool. All the best to you for your good health and safety. 🤗👋
excellent choices, cheers!
Hay Fox do you think one of these days you could do a video on what you feel is a longer term kit for your area, cook set up, all the gear people love to see but your own philosophy as well.
You can do a lot with any swiss army knife locking blade or slip joint. I have a waiter swiss army knife I use every day. I have been carry swiss knifes since I was 7 years old now I am 41.
I liked ur top 3. they work for u and ur area. like u said u live in the city and wouldn't need anything that would deal a lot with wood, so it wouldn't make sense to take a knife that did that. great vid :)
+The Dragon Lady exactly lol different environments, different scenraios and personalities are what makes these videos and items interesting to watch.
I like the one-handed trekker as an option - did you modify it for striking the ferro rod? I carry a SAK Ranger every day and have been using the saw back as a striker but it looked to me that you were using the bottle opener as a striker. Great Video!
Yup, it's modified... check out his video history, u'll find it!
+Doug Snitker yeah i filed it down slightly to help me strike the rod. since it locks, i dont gotta worry about it closing, ive cut myself with the saw before.
Those three items are my choice for desert survival, but I keep a full tang knife for my primary usage when away from home on a camping trip, and I keep a folding knife as my backup in my backpack.
Who cares what others say. That Trekker is very versatile. Great for EDC. Plus...I have the same one. Lol
trekker is the best edc blade out there, hands down.
Good video... I found you on UA-cam and I am a new subscriber to your channel. I look forward to looking at your video library, so far I am joy your videos tremendously. Keep up the good work. Thanks to Irish zombie nation I am glad you were on his channel.
thank ye very much, im glad youre enjoying them! Leos a good buddy of mine.
Really enjoying your videos my friend, got pretty much the same desert environment here in the south of Israel, been looking for a "desert survivor" youtuber like you. Thank you. Where can i get this steel water bottle you use?
thank ye very much! i am honored for ye to watch my videos. the bottle i use is from self reliance outfitters.com
Good video brother...I agree...most situations you can get away with a multitool instead of a full tag knife...I can make a fire in the woods with a folding knife and a ferro rod....it may take a bit longer if I only have larger pieces of wood to deal with...but it can be done...and I've never been in the woods and just had telephone poles for wood anyway....always twigs and leaves and branches around.... the cup, on the other hand, is cheating i think.....makes it 4 items...but I get where yer going with it... all around good video...
I would've taken the Leatherman Signal instead of the Trekker... nice video 👍
cool guitar sound!
chris tanner has never gone a night without hair gel bro don;t worry about what he brings
I kind of expected Clint Eastwood to step around the corner any moment. Great video James. Love your work
