  • Lou “Sonny” Volpe fought as a pro welterweight in the early 1950s. His biggest fight came against contender Chico Vejar. He had wins against Red DeFazio and Sonny Luciano. As an amateur, he fought Johnny Saxton and reached the semifinals of the New York Golden Gloves and fought in the inter-city Golden Gloves at the Garden. After his boxing career, Volpe joined Teamsters Local 817 and was employed as a transportation captain in the motion picture industry. He worked on many films, including “Raging Bull,” “A Bronx Tale” and “Working Girl.” This interview took place in 2015. Volpe passed away in 2022.
