22:24 The reason Blanka doesn't use the super gauge is because it's a kara cancel. The original reason why kara cancels even exist are to allow you to mess up an input and still get what you want. Since simple motions are harder to mess up you can only kara cancel into more complicated attacks. Normal into special, special into super and etc. So, since the purpose was to fix a mistake, if you kara cancel a metered move the meter would not be used after you cancel it. That's why Blanka doesn't use meter, he's kara cancelling the super into the hop because the priority system was broken.
Someone on reddit was trying to argue that s3 abigail was broken because "no one knew the matchup". Had to go back and watch the old s3 videos and my god he was a menace. Oh yeah the Blanka glitch was so annoying. Thank God there were barely any Blankas.
S2 Akuma: Red Fireball, wait to see if opponent CORRECTLY jumps over it, THEN V trigger cancel the whiffed fireball and do an enhanced DP that does 180 damage + hard knockdown.
For me I would say that S1 Mika, S3 Abigail, S5 Seth, S5 Cammy, and S6 Luke were the strongest. With the most consistent characters throughout the game’s lifespan being Akuma, Rashid, Cammy, Karin, Bison, Guile, Urien, Poison, Kolin, and Ibuki. All ten of those characters were strong for a lengthy period of time and were very prominent in tournaments.
SOme hounorable mentions: S1 Ryu s2 Urien s2 Ibuki (could say due to vt2 season 3 as well). S2 Ken S2 Balrog s3 Kolin (the one where her Vt2 was 2 bars) S5 Cody & Laura
Dude, recently discovered you but holy shit, it is CRIMINAL how few subs you have! This is top tier content and the passion you have for the subject material is tangible! You -def- earned my sub!!
I was pretty consistent at anti airing air legs in S1, but it was a problem with mix up options. I would anti air onuki pretty consistently when we played.
S3 Abigail was so overpowered that he... never won a major, and only won a single CapCup circuit event - a lightly attended event in LatAm won by Itazan. It was held the same weekend as a much bigger event in NYC that drew all the major international talent. That got "ItaGail" into Capcup finals for the year, where he managed to make it all the way to Grand Finals, where he promptly lost to the actual problem child of the first several seasons of SFV: Rashid
Number 1 is definitely lack luster. As you have mentioned the glitch is patched soon after it is discovered and it would be banned from any tournament. On the other hand it is surprising that Akuma or Cammy aren't in the list as they were consistently good for so long. Aside from one health buff in Season 2 Akuma only got nerfs for a long time before people stopped considering him top tier.
Akuma got more buffs to his unused V Trigger along the way. Rather than toning down the strong V Trigger capcom "balanced" him by making the other one stronger. Meanwhile, FANG nerfs are inbound for Season 7...
@@shaunmcisaac782 that VT was irrelevant up until recently and afaik even now VT1 is the better choice. Let me give you a list of some of the important nerfs Akuma got - increased cost for air fireballs (you could do 4-5 of them before now only 3) - you cannot cancel into VT on whiffed fireballs (remember H. red fireball into VT activation?) - f.HP was plus on block (+2 iirc) - MK was safe on block (it is still hard to punish but it was -2 before) And finally his side switch got nerfed which seems to be the final nail in the coffin for players like Tokido.
I think Luke is a relatively healthy top tier. I'd much rather have a character who has no losing matchups than a character who has a ton of absurdly winning matchups.
Season 3 was super broken. I’m honestly not sure that Abigail would have been the best character in the game long term had that been the final version because of how strong characters like Akuma and Rashid were in that version.
Akuma, Rashid, Cammy all posted better results. The unblockables scaled to the point where if you just took the damage it was very minor factor, and you could always just EX DP / Super / Armor it if available. The fifty frames of charged HP startup gave you all the time in the world to gather your thoughts and reversal. If you were clueless and tried to press buttons, jump, or backdash you got blown up.
Hey bro, I am writing to inform you that a very high quality UA-cam channel named Great Big Story just made a 3 minute video on Capybaras that is excellent and I thought you should know.
This was an enjoyable video and one I learned a lot watching. I do wish you'd picked someone else for the top spot since Blanka's inclusion is more about glitches than meta.
i honestly expected you to say season 1 Balrog or Karin Kanzuki. those characters are the reason this game was called fishing for a while on steam. super forgot about blankas time stop, lol
My favorite part about lists like this in hindsight is thinking about all of the downplayers at those times. I can't tell you how many people in discord tried saying all of these characters weren't that good and "just learn the matchup bro" at these times. Discussing this stuff with people online is such a waste of time because of the absolute mental hurdles people will go through.
18:40 couldn't xian have quickrised to get out of this? I can understand not reacting in time but he might have been able to neutral jump it if he did.
The crHP nerf wasn't needed along side Mika losing... everything else. I don't believe her command grabs lost damage, the big loss was that her V-Skill used to charge to level 2 instantly.
I remember when I first tried to learn sfv Abigail was meta, facing him every game made me uninstall the game and I didnt try to pick it back up until 2022
You have a great voice for content, clear and concise, love the vid. It's very interesting to see what was considered broken in sfv over the years from your perspective as a pro player. As a casual I didn't care what was broken and what wasn't I just wanted to play the game learn and have fun. The reason I find this vid so fascinating is the fact that none of the characters everyone shat on until they got nerfed by capcom is in your list. Season 2 balrog is a good example. He popped trigger then u died. Everyone complained about akuma despite the fact that only tokido was winning anything the character. Everyone complained about m bison, Everyone complained about guile being too strong. Urien and Seth were complained abt as well
Gief is irrelevant against most of the cast lol. The only people he really has a chance against are pressure characters, which he still struggles against in neutral anyway. He's basically only good when someone mistimes their pressure or whiffs near him lol
I'd argue Dhalsim is the best in Street Fighter V final update, it's just the execution is so high that he's not someone you can pick up and play like Luke.
Nash was the character that benefitted from the season 1 input delay and they reduced the lag input after evo in season 1. Mika's crouch heavy was additionally nerfed, so it wasn't just the frame delay reduction that made Mika's tools not as viable later on. And of course after season 1, Mika was never relevant again because the nerfs she suffered buried her in obscurity. Thanks to Capcom for ruining the most fun character made in decades.

Maybe not overpowered, but Nash was also benefiting from S1 input lag.
So much that he kept paying for it for years after first balance patch.
If there’s a list of SFV characters that got kneecapped the hardest, Charlie definitely makes top three.

Blanka glitch is basically a Kara cancel with wrong priority. Very funny.
One of the big highlights of SF5 for me is the vid you made about release (?) Luke and all his normals ranging from pretty decent to absurd
So hyped for the future of Broski content. Keep it up!
I love these informative long form videos, keep up the good work broski

Whats the music in the Luke section of the video? It sounds pretty good
I remember getting hit by the number 1 spot and didn't play again for a month, I already hated Blanka and that broke my brain.
the thing about ricki keeping her cool against S1 Mika is kinda funny, since she mained S1 Chun

Luke is the T7 Jin of SFV, very easy gameplan and too good all round
