Always loved this song for its powerful message.
The video is even more powerful, along with the song. Especially the ending, looking into the lives of a perfect life and a perfect family, when real life is so screwed up.

@Yvette Brand no offense intended. I don't know you, or your circumstances. But I see people that are always in trouble with the law complaining about it as if they didn't break the law again. Or people complain about lack of money but somehow have money for tatoos/drugs/alchohol/phones/etc. I heard about this girl who had 3 kids from 2 different guys and got mad some guy slept with her on the first date then won't return her calls. All I could do was laugh at her.

@@matthewgraham2619 And to the millions who stop digging, there lives don't improve anyway, at last in part because no one can see past the bad circumstances that led to their bad outcomes. Most of where you end up has to do with where you start from. A lot of the rest is just dumb luck. A much much smaller portion is personal choices, but that's all anyone ever focuses on.

This track always reminds me of a saying I heard, something like - "be kind to people you meet, you don't know what battle they are fighting". That's not the actual saying, but it's close i think.
It might be you're thinking of "everyone you know, is going through shit you know nothing about, so maybe be nice to everyone you know"

I was 35 when this song came out in 1998; I loved it from the first listen. Absolutely one of the best and most meaningful songs to come out of the 90s!

I was 16 and this was one of the first CDs I bought with my own money, along with "Back in Black", "Appetite for Destruction" and the Blues Brothers soundtrack. I don't know why I got "Whitey Ford" but I'm glad I did and I still have that CD some 20 years later.

Love this song & if people could always place themselves in someone else’s shoes before using human negative traits such as Judgement, Shame, Greed, Lack of empathy...this song reminds people that they can easily end up in the same situation. Those who can place themselves in another’s shoes & understand what they might be going through, thank God for your compassion & empathy.

This song always hit me because I lived through the first 2 parts of the song...homelessness & pregnant and alone. I can’t listen to it without tears.

I was 19 when this song came out. It Was all over the radio and big hit. Listening to it now, and having lived a bit more life, the song really hits home more, when compared to the age I was.

I was just a teenager when this song was released in 1998. It's one of the best songs of its time. That tune still sounds so damned good, and its message is so important.

Erik's a cool dude. I had the privilege of being backstage with him for about three hours when he played Bogart's in Cincinnati stop thinking 92 or 93. We smoked smoke some real good stuff and he got into what brought him to write music like this and it was just from the reality that he saw around him all the time. He's a really nice dude too despite having all the street cred. Peace and love!

I try to remember this song whenever I see a homeless person in need. Help when you can.
Yessir. I find it hard not being judgemental of how said person will spend the money or whatever I give, but I gotta remember that it's not my problem, really. They are grown men and women and I don't know their situations. I'm proselytizing for some reason, but my point is that everybody needs a little grace in their life.
