  • In Whisky in the 6 #45 Rob reviews Glengoyne 21 year old scotch. This Highland scotch has been aged exclusively in first fill and re-fill sherry casks. Glengoyne remains one of only two distilleries in Scotland to use Golden Promise barley. The distillery takes pride in the fact that they dry their barley with heated air and never peat.

    Hi Rob,
    Just bought a bottle of this one in Budapest for approx 130eur. I already had the Glendronach 18 and 21 years old. By the way i think that the 18 was slightly better than the 21. The 21 was too intense for my palate. But they both were absolutely amazing.

    Got the full bottle myself. Opened and drinking it. One of the best sherry-matured whiskys for sure! Got a sample box with the 10, 15 and the 18 as well. The 18 was delicious. Its on my wishlist. Saw a video from the distillery and its a place a want to visit!

      When it comes to the 25, the price start to get ridiculous. So I guess I will never taste that one...

      That the 21 is great. The 18 is very similar. A touch less oaky. Perhaps slighter more fresh.

      Ya, about 250£ on masterofmalt.com. I'm Canadian, so that would be about $500.

    Great job on the review. I have yet to try any Glengoyne. I will defiantly try the 18 if I can find it.
    Is the Glengoyne 21 sweeter then the Glendronach 21?
    I love the Glendronach 21

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 років тому

      It's not as sweet as the dronach 21 but also not as peppery.

    In the beginning, I thought I definitely preferred the Glengoyne 18 over 21, mostly due to 21's prominent oakiness. However, after a couple of months of opening, the oakiness has faded more into background, probably giving more "complexity" now. Still, the 18 is so close to 21, I think I'll just buy the much cheaper 18 next time. BTW, I would LOVE to try Glengoyne that is non chill-filtered...

    I visited the Glengoyne distillery a little over a year ago and they said they stopped using Golden Promise, probably due to lower yields. But older ones like this were originally Golden Promise malt.

    Own a bottle of Glengoyne 15 and it is good. I believe your correct on the Glengoyne line going up and that their barley choice does affect the malt in a good way. Still a novice in the field but, wish there more different barley used by distillers to make things interesting. Enjoyed the insight on matters and will aim for the 18.
    Have you had the Macallan 18(around $250 usd) or Highland Park 18?

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 років тому

      I've had Highland Park 18. Good stuff. Macallan age statement whisky isn't available in Toronto at all aside from the 21 so I haven't tried the 18 just yet but I will somehow someday. Thanks for watching, cheers.

    Glengoyne 15 and 18 are staples for me. Also love Glendronach 12 and 15. Now debating between Glengoyne 21 and Glendroch 18. What's your opinion?

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  6 років тому +1

      Aaron Asche I think I still prefer the 18. A little less oak.

    Great video. I stumbled across your channel, and immediately subscribed to it.
    Just one question: Are your sure with the statement that the 18 also uses 100% sherry casks (4:51)? I myself thought, from tasting it, that it feels as if there's a bit of bourbon influence; so I tried to check that:
    In several web shops, the 18 is marked as "sherry + bourbon casks", and on their official website, they say in the their tasting video of the 21 that "[compared to the 18yo] we moved up a gear, because here, we're a 100% sherry cask matured." Which is no definite proof, but a very strong evidence.

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 років тому

      You're probably right. I know that the 18 is 50 first fill Sherry based on the UA-cam video. Could have sworn they stopped mixing bourbon casks in after the 15 year. I'll look into it some more to make sure. Thanks for watching. Cheers.

    Great review. But for me, I was very disappointed in it as it had a very bitter after taste. So much so that I blended it with a Glendronach cask-strangh that I didn't like from last year. Together they're great!

      Very interesting. This one isn't bitter. I wonder if they were from different batches.

    W6, I opened up my Glengoyne 21 while watching the Warriors lose a game they should of won. Anyway's you already know the nose & tasting notes. I must say, what a difference between the 21 & 15. I have no reason to go purchase the 18. I feel I would be going backwards and not much price difference anyways. What a tasty dram it is. Definitely will be buying a 2nd bottle costing only about $105 at TWE....

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  7 років тому
