    For this episode we will test a 1880 large format camera lens, one of the first lens with internal iris.The Lens is incredibly sharp for a 136 years old simple metallic lens, from my test it's even sharper than most of my modern canon lenses, the results are amazing ... but it also gives some strange lens flares and light leaks that are pretty dreamy ( some would say it's horrible )

      not really though. Hipster is like a fake and presumptuous version of real cool (like how jimi hendrix was cool). A small percentage of what you call a hipster is actually a real one. And this lens, using it, AND making a video for us to enjoy it is in fact really cool.

      There was a special prismatic coating added to old lenses to reduce sun flair. That, coupled with the obviously not as accurately spun glass gives this an almost surreal look, especially when shooting in modern day. Like, seeing cars and cellphones with Victorian era focus and dimension is amazing and almost hypnogogic.

    It's simply more realistic than modern glass..
    The obsession with shallow depth of field, 'pixel peeping' and pointless perfect corner to corner sharpness.. Leads to nothing more than flat unrealistic images.. I detest modern [excessive] element glass.
    I find the images from this classic lens.. Very beautiful and again realistic..
    Moreover, I assume it's a triplet lens (although I am not 100% sure).. These do give a lovely dreamy look.. No need for a diffusion filter or negative clarity in post. I personally love the Zeiss Triotar 135mm, it' one of the best portrait lens ever made, in my opinion.. Not to be labelled sexiest by the SJW's out these [haha], but it's particularly effective [flattering] when making portraits of women under natural light.
    Again excellent lens, lovely video ☺️

      Whatever arguments hipsters will come up with to justify their choices... Corner to corner sharpness simply gives a better image. You know what doesn't have a corner to corner sharpness? Your eyes. Only tiny area in a middle of your field of view is sharp, the rest is pretty much blur. Why would you want a picture you're looking at to be smudged too? It just puzzles me.

    • @Lawful_Rebel
      @Lawful_Rebel 7 років тому +3

      MrCorvusC It would appear so.
      Moreover, You really shouldn't assign labels to people you don't know, it's frankly just rude.

    • @ChildOfAnAndroid
      @ChildOfAnAndroid 7 років тому +2

      MrCorvusC - For me, the reason i'd like the edges of a photo to be 'smudged' is exactly why you're saying you wouldn't! Overall it's an artistic choice, but I feel that creating a more natural looking image, as if it were being seen through the eyes, is more visually appealing to me. Brings the focus to the subject of the image.

  • @MarkHoltze

    There's a certain appreciation of older things I've come to appreciate as i've gotten older. 1) I'm a student of film, i've been shooting videos since I was 10 and editing them at 16..currently work as a broadcast film/TV editor. Watching my great grandfather's super 8mm films of Canadian cities (projected nothing had been scanned) I couldn't believe how beautiful the picture looked. How artistically and aesthetically that look could be used in productions today (and often is). Inheriting my grandfather's old lenses is what got me into the vintage lens bit. taking pictures of my family with the same lenses as my grandfather took of my dad and uncles growing up.
    Whatever inspires people to go out and shoot more is at least in my eyes, a good thing.

    A lens like this is basically simple see through glass, quite basic technology, even in 1880. The aperture could have been a hole in cardboard. What are the curiosities of simply shooting with a quite usual old lens? I must say, I think the reason this looks better than the photo's of past is the adapter setup and solid sensor of the camera.
    Why is this of note besides just for interest sake?
