For this episode we will test a 1880 large format camera lens, one of the first lens with internal iris. The Lens is incredibly sharp for a 136 years old simple metallic lens, from my test it's even sharper than most of my modern canon lenses, the results are amazing ... but it also gives some strange lens flares and light leaks that are pretty dreamy ( some would say it's horrible )

Something about shooting this video on a lens so old gives me shivers.
imagine what that lens has seen... or the people that designed it, how happy they must of been
Tom Norris it just makes me sad lmao but joyful
ikr all dem ded ppl
Yes!
its the music
about as hipster as you can go right here
+matt25675 Archeohipster :)
+Stern Mathieu haha :}}
Nah, cave paintings is where it's at.
not really though. Hipster is like a fake and presumptuous version of real cool (like how jimi hendrix was cool). A small percentage of what you call a hipster is actually a real one. And this lens, using it, AND making a video for us to enjoy it is in fact really cool.
i thought exactly the same!
wow pretty sharp for more than a century old lens
+Stef Zupan Well it's glass... unless it's porpusedly damaged, it won't have bad quality. The problem with the antique videos/photos weren't the lenses
+Harabec nor the cameras themselves, antique pictures while in black and white look really sharp
+Stef Zupan people tend to massively overestimate progress...
+antigen4 I dont know, we have progressed a lot in technology.
(comment deleted)
not bad quality
Oh crap it's you
I SEE U EVERYWHERE
Tampatec I see you everywhere like damn......
YusukeX of course you would have the google dinosaur
Sure that David Lynch would love this lense!

Great... Now I'm gonna go to my room and listen to a whole day's worth of cold play. THANKS ALOT
why would you do that?
MaghoxFr cause the song was fix you and the original artist is coldplay...and it's so magical it sends you to another realm...and you lie down and cry cause it is so beautiful but your life isn't and never will be...DUHHH
Well, that took a dark turn...
Thats pretty accurate.
THANKS ALOT RACHEL... THANKS ALOT
gives me a bit of comfort knowing i spent $2,500 on a lens..
i think i bought it for 15$
Ninjarro you just got played boiii
Ninjarro what an idiot lol
Ninjarro ur ass got ripped by society
Ninjarro why would you spend so much money?! lmao
photography is not just solely about sharpness....
the feel this lens delivers will never be replicated by modern HD lens.
Thanks for the sharing.
yes, I absolutely love old lenses for their individual characteristics.
Timomonochrom dont you know its all about them HD Lenses
Darren Lee yeah, there's something they add to the glass, its not the same glass anymore, and the diaphragms? Oh God the diaphragms
There was a special prismatic coating added to old lenses to reduce sun flair. That, coupled with the obviously not as accurately spun glass gives this an almost surreal look, especially when shooting in modern day. Like, seeing cars and cellphones with Victorian era focus and dimension is amazing and almost hypnogogic.
Looks great.
And the lens isn't bad either.
Mamo oh you..
Mamo what in hell
Mamo 😂😂😂😂
Yeah it looks great because its on a NEW sony camera and not the actual original old camera that it came from.
Biscuit exactly the lense did nothing.
The level of hipsterness is physically husrting me.
Why not?
Your spelling of hurting is hurting me.
Satou stfu weeaboo

This lens almost turns a camera into a window to the past. The light leaks change your footage from just sorta "a kid with a 5d and really steady hands could do that" to that feeling of being lost in a daydream. You and your kit make me jealous.
Probably even a bottle can take nice videos.
can't wait for your bottle video
Mathieu Stern
I just finish my beer. I will have no need of filters.
Guardian Observer your response is GOLD lol 😂
This is funny! UA-cam comments make me happy!! Lol
I really love how soft all the colors are. Was that done with the camera, or in post-production?
Uncoated lenses have less contrast (and more lens flare)
sharper than my Helios 44m-4
Indeed :)
What a beautiful girl, what a beautiful lens :)
92OnTV I see what you did there.
92OnTV but if you change the lens its a goblin in reality
hahahahaha
92OnTV
what a beautiful sky
Now it's 137 years!😑and my mobile has not even got an year
john samuel "an year"
I'm offended, I drink cum, not crap.
An ear
Leon Reaper I meant that my mobile has not completed it's 1st anniversary yet
QTLuv he's using an properly the word "a" is just a shorten word of "an"
That video proves that you can even record using potato if you got pretty model.
he wasn't using a potato though
KubaT
You dumb fuck the video quality dont depends on the mf lens is the camera
u can use those words to your mother not to me
Except not really... SONY A7 II
It was clearly a joke
Why do you have to be so hateful ??!!
That's an impressive lens! There's so much detail!
Amazing to think a lens that old can be adapted and used with todays cameras, thanks for sharing. Gives me ideas.
Beautiful everything.
The girl, the lens performance, the music.
jguyuyguyi do you have to ruin everything nice that is said?
Please keep this lens away from Casey Neistat.
this shows me that, if you are just starting to make video's or something, you don't need expensive lenses
There's a difference between old and inexpensive. Old things have that strange feel to them, like when you find a film camera like an instamatic at a thrift store and just want to know how many places it's been and what splendid snapshots of times past were made with it.
Just take a moment to think and imagine all the moments this lens when through. All the photos and videos that where ever captured by it...
Just, amazing!
old glass kicks ass.
*old glass kicks arse
Praveen Sharma Hmm?
AnonMusic rhyming
Surprisingly nice bokeh
It's simply more realistic than modern glass..
The obsession with shallow depth of field, 'pixel peeping' and pointless perfect corner to corner sharpness.. Leads to nothing more than flat unrealistic images.. I detest modern [excessive] element glass.
I find the images from this classic lens.. Very beautiful and again realistic..
Moreover, I assume it's a triplet lens (although I am not 100% sure).. These do give a lovely dreamy look.. No need for a diffusion filter or negative clarity in post. I personally love the Zeiss Triotar 135mm, it' one of the best portrait lens ever made, in my opinion.. Not to be labelled sexiest by the SJW's out these [haha], but it's particularly effective [flattering] when making portraits of women under natural light.
Again excellent lens, lovely video ☺️
thanks a lot !!
Whatever arguments hipsters will come up with to justify their choices... Corner to corner sharpness simply gives a better image. You know what doesn't have a corner to corner sharpness? Your eyes. Only tiny area in a middle of your field of view is sharp, the rest is pretty much blur. Why would you want a picture you're looking at to be smudged too? It just puzzles me.
MrCorvusC It would appear so.
Moreover, You really shouldn't assign labels to people you don't know, it's frankly just rude.
Spehmaster G. Why do you type like a snob?
MrCorvusC - For me, the reason i'd like the edges of a photo to be 'smudged' is exactly why you're saying you wouldn't! Overall it's an artistic choice, but I feel that creating a more natural looking image, as if it were being seen through the eyes, is more visually appealing to me. Brings the focus to the subject of the image.
Wow its amazing that they shot that video back 136 years ago! I didnt know UA-cam existed back then. You learn something new everyday!
Just add a sepia filter BRUHHH
CharlotteVEVO RULES :V
CharlotteVEVO yap
100th like.. xD
Instead of buying an old camera that costs around 3000$ and using its lens only
I’ve heard that originals are better than imitations or copies.
For anyone wondering, the piano song in the beginning of the video is called "Mister Expedition" by Kevin Macleod. It is also on the silent film playlist.
Kitty Love thanks a lot 👍 :)
Dr. Draw no problem! Kevin Macleod is a great musician, and well-known on UA-cam, too.
So, hold on. How did you figure the flange distance? and would the helicoid be more macro if put it on the camera and attached the extension tube and lens to that?
Yes it would go macro if you move the lens very far from the sensor, almost a microscope
wut?
I had no idea lenses that old had music and time lapse-mode!
Blows my mind
This has got to be the epitome of the saying "your gear doesn't make good photography." Well done!
Those old lens were built to last unlike new ones
Amazing as always
+Peter Brown thanks a lot Peter :)
+Stern Mathieu How do you go about finding which lens you want to use? Do subscribers recommend them or do you seek them out?
I always try to find them myself and experiment, something really cool for someone can be really boring for someone else so it's better to make your own experimentations.
That's fantastic. Bring life to an object older than yourself.
There's a certain appreciation of older things I've come to appreciate as i've gotten older. 1) I'm a student of film, i've been shooting videos since I was 10 and editing them at 16..currently work as a broadcast film/TV editor. Watching my great grandfather's super 8mm films of Canadian cities (projected nothing had been scanned) I couldn't believe how beautiful the picture looked. How artistically and aesthetically that look could be used in productions today (and often is). Inheriting my grandfather's old lenses is what got me into the vintage lens bit. taking pictures of my family with the same lenses as my grandfather took of my dad and uncles growing up.
Whatever inspires people to go out and shoot more is at least in my eyes, a good thing.
Wow the render is amazing, awsome it's like traveling in the past
man,, I am amazed for what you did, I am trying to do this from a long time but I could not, the result is wonderful and this what I am looking for, hop you make a video with more info and links how to do it.
i will, subscribe and watch my older videos to get some infos
It's wonderful to see a lens works just fine after all these years.
There's something really organic about the image this lense gives. Like film... its not perfect and that's what makes it perfect. Absolutely stunning, it captures your imagination as well. Brilliant little film!
filming better than my phone
well shit
just about as awesome as it comes
ignore the haters
thanks Nathan
which haters?
Nathan Walker what haters do you speak of?
Nathan Walker
i haven't seen a single negative comment, but ok
i'am a hater
A lens like this is basically simple see through glass, quite basic technology, even in 1880. The aperture could have been a hole in cardboard. What are the curiosities of simply shooting with a quite usual old lens? I must say, I think the reason this looks better than the photo's of past is the adapter setup and solid sensor of the camera.
Why is this of note besides just for interest sake?
let me order my coffee real quick at my local coffee shop. need to sit outside and smoke my cigarillo to take this one in
Great video. I'm thinking of buying an A7II sometime this year and it looks like a pretty damn good camera for video.
+SunriseInTheMidwest it's sure is !! i can't wait to try the A7SII for comparaison
Personally, I enjoyed the music more than the video!😅
Old lenses are lovely to play with, each guy has their own tamper
This looks like it could be a perfume commercial
to make a steampunk fantasy film with this or a monster movie would be amazing asf!!!
such an amazing idea. good job.
the proof that you don't need these brand new lenses to make some great content
This how you prank people that you were in the past, you snap a shot with these lens of yourself and BOOM
Now thats some photography skill
#respect
Looks incredible
That feeling, when a 136 Years old lens have better results, than your nifty fifty plastic 1.8 :D
SO COOL! Did not expect it to look that good. Awesome idea!
tell me why an 136 year old lens is better than a samsung phone quality
Riley Morales Sensor itself is 100x better than your Samsung's sensor
i dont have a samsung tho
Riley Morales It's the sensor, it's not just the lens.
If you knew how cameras work, you wouldnt be asking this question
From times when Insagram wasn't just software.
Looks amazing. Makes we want to travel back a century and a half
The rendering of this lens is absolutely gorgeous.
Why can't they sell these anymore
바람 - because you didn't make them
Azman Samsudin what :D
yes I will be that guy, taking one for the team I am, the young lady in this video is absolutely gorgeous and only surpassed by the pictures this lens is still able to take.
fred soksabay "taking one for the team" like there aren't over one hundred comments saying the exact same thing. 😌
wow ur so brave telling someone they're pretty how do you do it?
I know the video is more than an year and a half old but wow! The lens, the whole intro, the music and most of all the post production is an absolute 10/10!
Saving this to my liked videos as an idea for my future videos... 😁
this is amazing!!! still look amazing after 136 years...
A Century is still nice!
can it shoot 4k?
Jiří Huser it's just a lens. Of course it depends on the camera --"
andri juliansyah asu
n00bie your words reflect who you are
andri juliansyah eta terangkanlah
It has such a soft feel.
There's so much joy in your videos, to behold these sights from unseemly possibilities and to see the world with new eyes. You really make beauty happen.
Music???
Lenses havent really changed all that much, just the technology behind them. I dont know why people are ao surprised by the quality
Ok but are we all just going to ignore the fact that there is some sort of top secret cult stuff happening at 0:30
Looks beautiful how everything gives off a different peaceful mood
is this a buzz feed video?
+Oranguice no, i wish, it would mean i got paid to do it :)
why you ask ?
No, this is quality content.
this is a example of how much you can save and having professionals footage with an old lens.
using that 136 year old choir for their render of coldplay's - fix you really added that nice touch.
It seems like the SONG choice was intentional as it supposedly bring the "memories" of the people who made that lens and somehow can see the world as it exists today, a choir singing at some distance... You have my respect for putting so much thought in this one.
This is so hauntingly beautiful...
Everything about this video was beautiful
The result is beautiful. We often forget how much impact the lenses have regarding the resulting image
Wow...such a sharp view...without any aberrations!!...how is it possible?
Undoubtedly the best channel on all of UA-cam dedicated to the world of camera lenses. I love the demo videos you do, they are magical and inspiring.
thanks a lot Daniel
Why did this bring tears to my eyes
I have seen various of your videos, my wife are studying photography, I'm a experimenter, ham radio operator, you give me ideas to play with old projectors lens and try to obtain old broadcast lenses, imagine a big fujinon...
1. This video is so amazing
2.Half way through I realized this was a cover of WTK and I nearly died
Oh my god the quality! Thanks for the idea.
It also helps to have a nice camera to shoot with, the combo makes for a very nice look
Hey I know you!
I know im late but I NEED THIS LENS SO BADLY OMGGG LOVE IT
damn. Love everything about this video-the angle, the tone, the camera movement (pretty smooth!), even the choice of music.
Europe seems like such a calmer, simpler place. Man.
Damn, the 1880s sure looked good
this song dude I was getting into it then the video finished 😂
I'm glad this was in my recommended! It's a visual treat!
1:27 just felt like saying HER HAIR IS SO FREAKIN PRETTY.
You opened a dimensional portal in time when recording this
Amazing. I must add, beside being ingenuitive, you are so artistically talented. I am getting addicted to your channel.
Thanks a lot Sam !
This popped in my recommended and it's honestly so awesome.
This is better then a lot of lenses out there
The way the lenses makes it look is beautiful
This is a really good series. You are really ingenious in making all these lenses able to focus. This shows just what you can do, and that good quality old glass is still useful.
thanks a lot Stefan ! means a lot !
