AARON'S REVIEW OF THE SUPER ADVANTAGE
Overall I like this controller a lot. If you manage to find one of these controllers in the wild, odds are you will have an issue with the buttons sticking as the problem seems to be prevalent with this hardware. I would recommend following the steps outlined in this video to clean the controller if you find one to resolve the button sticking issue. The controller works great for space shmups such as Gradius III, Super R-Type as well as rail 3-D games like Star Fox. I don't like it so much for platformers like Super Mario World, but it works great for 3-D mode 7 games like F-Zero and Super Mario Kart. I cannot really endorse using this controller for fighting games such as Street Fighter or Moral Kombat due to the awkward button placement and the inability to pull off special moves accurately. However, I loved using this controller for arcade classics such as Ms. Pacman or Williams Arcade Classics. The controller is a unique and rare find and worth taking the time to refurbish if you have the chance.

This week I restore and review the Super Advantage - an arcade style third party controller for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System! Found this thing sitting in the basement at our new house and decided to clean it up and test it out. I had never actually seen one of these things in person before -- have you?
Keys will still stick. It's not restored. you need a special formula of some sort to make them never stick.
Do you know where I can get replacement button membranes?
Great Job!
It's amazing how on one hand someone can take very good care of their controller and someone else in the world might as well have dumped their Coke down the left side and into the joystick area. I've had experience with both of these scenarios. The former almost 10 years ago, the latter just a few weeks ago.
The first one I bought I ended up modifying it to use (mostly) genuine arcade parts. The latter I want to keep as stock.
As a bonus to anyone reading this who is interested in picking one up or already has one, the ball top is interchangeable with genuine Sanwa ball tops as well as bat tops (adapter included) without any modification.
I myself have always been a bat top player so the fact that you can so easily switch is Asciiware's attention to detail and even consideration for us consumers.
I’m always late to the party. Still glad I found this channel bro , I can relate to it well because of the age similarity. Thanks for your work , keep on rockin
Best controller I ever had! Played the hell out of SF2 and SF2 turbo with it
I know that this video was published 3.5 years ago, but thank you for the insight regarding cleaning the Super Advantage controller. I purchased one and it is in rough shape. I hope that I can clean it up and get it to work properly. Thanks again.
Welcome! Good luck getting it going again!
The original NES Advantage was made by Asciiware, it just wasn't advertised as such.
Back in the summer of 1993, I bought my SNES, Star Fox and the Super Advantage just to play SF with. Still have everything. Fun to this day! 😊😊❤❤👍👍2024
This video was exactly I was looking for. I also found a snes advantage controller that needs a lot of work. Thanks dude
Great video! Pulled mine out of the closet after seeing this. Still works great, but within 30 seconds I remembered you can barely use it if it’s sitting in your lap. Definitely has to be on a flat surface!!! Will pick up a Hyperkin adapter to use it with the NES/SNES Classic!
I just saw one of these at a local game store. I may have to go back and get it now. Also gives me some ideas for cleaning a Genesis arcade controller I recently picked up. Thanks!
3:44 thank you for saying “Gradius III”.
Slow Motion button is very cool! I made myself one on a regular NES joystick. It's simple, you need to bind the logical part of any turbo button to the Start button.
Amazing that someone would just leave this in their house when they move. Priceless. I always wanted one of these because I saw the ads in the magazines, but I could never get one. I got the AsciiPad controller instead.
For never playing F-Zero you looked pretty good.
I remember watching Full House, specifically season 8 episode 9 Stephanie’s wild ride, they were playing a game and they had the super advantage I think.
This was an extremely informative video. Not only did it showcase the Super Advantage and show its pros and cons with various games, but it also served as a helpful guide on good ways to clean and maintain a joystick controller. And the fact that you picked a wonderful selection of some of the best SNES music to perfectly embellish the mundane cleaning montages was a nice touch! Thanks for the great video and stay safe out there!
Great video! Thanks for teaching us how to clean it as well
Excellent work on this!
Can't go wrong with Ascii. They were a really good 3rd party brand back in the day.
Nice atmosphere on this video
This reaches its highest potential with Star Fox. A game I struggled with is now completely intuitive with the analog stick. Plays more like n64.
I like, i need this stick in my life!!! Since 90's
Love the video I will clean mine tomorrow and play
I love this channel man, please keep up with this grade A content, brotha man. But, I definitely like Super Advantage over the NES Advantage.
Awesome vid, never knew this controller existed. What a find!
Thanks, Mike!
The Ascii Pad was my favorite controller. I thought they did a pretty decent job for a 3rd party controller.
I actually bought this controller specifically for Zengief on Street Fighter 2. My friends laughed but his circle moves were easier to pull off and I got a ton of wins. So yes for me it was worth pulling out my friends Dpad and putting in the joystick and then change the messy settings they had back to my stick settings. An on this went every other turn we played. Totally worth it for me. I must have played other games with it but Zengief got the most use lol. Now fight sticks are popular so I feel vindicated .
Damn, I forgot I used to own one of these. This would be perfect for the nes\snes classic.
I remember that Ultra Duster brand of compressed air here in Wisconsin.. now you can't find it anywhere. Walmart tries to take over with their crappy Onn brand, but I stocked up on the electronic duster brand that used to be cheap (2 packs for $8.88 but after I bought it all every restock during covid they upped the price to $12.64 for 2 pack), so I have about 20 packs in my basement, half old price half new price.
The Super Advantage for the Super Nintendo looks like its own console, and is the same size as the original NES.
😂😂😂always clean your ball!! Just hilarious
Good [controller] hygiene is important.
I didnt like this one as much as the NES Advantage. I used the nes one for games like blaster master and metroid, but by the time this one came out, I was playing a lot of fighting games. No use for turbo in those!
ASCII also made a pad version, the size of a regular controller. I remember buying it at KB toys, and me, being 10 or 11, asked for the ASSY pad. The girl was laughing her ass off, but I didnt understand why at the time. Awesome video!
The NES Advantage is damn perfect. Loved the turbo knobs compared to the flimsy sliders on the SNES version.
"ASSY pad" ... that's freaking hilarious. Thank you for sharing. I'm cracking up over here lol.
Could you list all of the games to play with Super Advantage on the Super Nintendo? I'm talking about arcade-styled games, beat 'em games, fighting games, platform games, shoot 'em up games, and arcade ports. please.
Oh My god!!!! i can't believe i exchange my super nintendo with that rare arcade controller for a psp to a friend of mine!!
It’s beautiful.
Looks Like A Lot Of Work. Hope The Manual Of That Object Shows How To Clean It If I Buy It Online.
Ascii made some great controllers for some of the old retro consoles.
"We need to be very careful not to break the ribbon cable here..."
*proceeds to clean the mainboard while the joystick board just dangles freely*
You got a better way?
@@FridayNightArcade don't worry, I'm not much better. I just fixed an NES advantage and had to re-solder 3 wires that I broke while doing the same thing. I taped the joyboard to the backside of the board after that.
@@nikitasstuff9984 nice... I was just happy/relieved the thing worked after I got it back together lol
My advice when using turbo on an arcade stick: only use the turbo functions for shoot'em ups and not on fighting games and beat'em ups because if you use turbo on fighting games and beat'em ups, you will get a lot of missed inputs.
👍
what that turbo function actually does ? I know auto-fire is for shooting games , and turbo is a setting in fighting games' option menu to speed up the game , but on a game controller , I never figured out what that turbo button was for
I had one of these back in the day and I thought it was pretty cool at the time, but in all honesty, my pride and joy(whick I still have even now) were my pair of asciipads which were made by the same company. I also had a one handed controller by asciiware for rpgs, so you could play one handed and have a free hand to take notes, draw maps, ect.. All asciiware controllers were actually licensed by Nintendo and held to Nintendo's higher standards that they had for their own controllers.
William Brown I’m not that familiar with old rpgs, what rpgs were you playing that you write notes and draw maps? sounds like fun
@@xkimopye pretty much any rpg of that Era, most didn't have a built in mapping feature like we have now a days.
Have one of these. its a pretty hefty stick. The button placement is weird but really the only complaint i ever had was the buttons were not quite smooth after a while think dust kinda clogged them down.
I had one of these. Loved the auto fire for shot em ups like Starfox but the buttons were horrible for fighting games.
Can the cord be manually unplugged from the board? Just like in regular snes controllers...?
This is an old video, but the NES advantage was made by Asciiware as well. So the same company made both.
I'd crush NHL 94 with that I must have this lol
You got stuff like this in your basement along with your house purchase? Perfect for you. What do you recommend for sticky buttons on modern controllers? Also, what music did you use for the video?
Gotta upgrade your setup to HD bro. But overall great commentary great game review & excellent restoration on the stick! I enjoyed watching.
Lol yeah at this point my cell probably takes better video than my old 2011 camera... May try that next time. Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it!
I wonder if there’s any way to make an adapter so they work on the SNES/Super Famicom Minis. I just took 2 Super Advantages apart and cleaned them up; it’d be great to have these work with my outdoor projector. Think of the neighborhood parties! 🤣
There's a SNES plug to Wii outlet adapter. I think Retro USB makes them.
There's also another SNES plug to Wii outlet adapter made by Hyperkin.
Quedo hermosa!!! , me pregunto si hay adaptador de usb para usar en rasperri pi 3
You might be able to use something like this ... www.amazon.com/SNES-Controller-Adapter-USB-Super-NES/dp/B002IXZ5DE/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=snes+usb+adapter&qid=1604326498&sr=8-3 or this www.amazon.com/Tomee-SNES-USB-Controller-Adapter-pc/dp/B00HM3QCT6/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=snes+usb+adapter&qid=1604326545&sr=8-4
@@FridayNightArcade muchas gracias por tu aporte , genio
I own two of these.. one is for my collection, and the other I'm going to install a raspberry pi and make it a plug and play controller.
Nice. Did you have a chance to set this up yet? I'm curious how the button mapping went.
@@FridayNightArcade looks like you hate remapping buttons , I assume you barely use emulators , because this is what we do all the time when playing retro games on computers using usb game-pad . I concede it is sometime irritating to match emulated console buttons with plugged controller
.... huh?
@@FridayNightArcade ow ! sorry , I was wrong , my deep apologies
How heavy is it? Not as heavy as the NES advantage?
Where is this music from?😊
I found one a year ago at a flea market near me for 5$! The back has some rust spots. Not bad at all but, because of the metal back and the age I really should restore it. But as is I could sell today... Not sure the worth though....
They tend to go for a bit more than the regular NES Advantage. They're tough to find in the wild - I'd hang onto it and restore it for sure. But I'm weird so.....
@@FridayNightArcade lol then I'm weird too! Only a few rust spots on the back like 2 the size of a dime and 1 tiny other spot. Any idea on the best way to de-rust the back without damaging the metal
@@FridayNightArcade Why they would use a metal backing that rusts make no sense to me. Do You collect pretty heavy, also? I'm currently in snes and n64 mode of collecting. Just snagged a watermelon n64 console for 70$ with hook ups and matching controller....
It would be kind of a pain, but a little bit of steel wool and WD40 would probably get that rust off of there. Would just have to take the whole thing apart first. I think they used steel just so it would have more of a substantial weight to it and stand up to the pounding of little kids click-click-clicking away on the buttons. I got into collecting before prices went heywire ... now I really only pick up stuff if I need it for a video. Partially just because I don't have that much space and partially just because of the cost. I actually just sold some stuff to raise money for a new camera to do videos with.
@@FridayNightArcade lol I hear that. I'm in Boston and still finding some real good deals. Like a copy of zombies ate my neighbours. Mint with box. And bevis and butthead for snes at a yardsale on my street a few years back both for 5$ 2.50 each! Lol I gave him 10$ he was thrilled. And so was I. Also there's a few thrift shops and flea markets that still have some real good stuff that they don't know the value of. But most are catching on these days
I would use it to play emulated snk games on my desktop using snes controller to usb adapter , have you tried to plug this stick into your computer using adapters ?
I know what you're talking about with the adapters... I haven't tried that myself, mostly just because I didn't want to have to remap all the buttons just to use a separate controller.
I would to have this snes controller for snes games for retro pie emulator including the duck hunt gun for shooting n the Sega gun as well n super scope for snes shooting games
Congratulations, by the way, on you and your wife's twin babies.
May blessings continue to manifest for you.
Prov. 3:5,6
Actually looks like an SNES. I think the PlayStation had an available controller that looked like the console. By the way, I came here through the ad.
You are correct - the playstation arcade controller looked exactly like the original PS1 console.
Arcade sticks for Street Fighter 2 work better on emulators, though I know how to play by means of arcade stick and controller the arcade stick is better for doing semicircle inputs and charge inputs(Guile's Sonic Boom and Blanka's cannonball attack for example also M Bison's Psycho Crusher)
I hear Final Fantasy music in the background! What track is that?
I think it was the prelude music from FFIII SNES. Tried to pick all SNES tracks for the soundtrack :)
I could use these to make a mortal kombat 2 tabletop arcade machine.
You may want to check out the SNES Scoremaster ... similar to the Advantage but with a slightly different button configuration that is a little better suited for fighting games. It was also officially released by Nintendo whereas this was technically third party (Asciiware). Unfortunately they're REALLY hard to find.
yo lo tengo ese control es muy bacan!
how you glue ?
Nice final fantasy XIV log in music awesome
Agreed, I don’t like the button layout
Some dude on youtube said joystick controls 2d action and analog stick controls 3d action but I played with this controllers in star fox so?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Great video ...i have the European version ....
Oh yeah? Is that the ScoreMaster or is that a different version altogether?
Like yours. ...scoremaster?
Ahh okay. yeah, the Scoremaster was the Nintendo official version of an arcade stick. Different button placement is the big thing. If you're into fighting games, it's probably the better choice. Really hard to find though.

Too long of a video. Get to the goods faster
There's chapters in the description. You can literally skip to any point in the video you want. You probably scrolled right past them as you were racing to write this super helpful and constructive comment of yours. Godspeed, Robert.
You obviously didn't play any games at the arcade, WHY are you reviewing a arcade controller?
You seem upset.
