If you want to play with trains without all the expense and fiddliness there are several ways to simulate it on computer. You can drive trains on the real routes. You can be a signaller managing a complex layout with many trains. Or you can build your own trains and rails in Minecraft, especially with one of several mods that make the trains more realistic and graphically advanced than the basic ones it comes with, such as Create.

Pick yourself up a used set, not on eBay, but at a boot fair or at your local train store (If you're in or around Lincolnshire, check out the one in Gainsborough, maybe even time your visit with the model railway open day!). The only decision you need to make up front, is "what scale". OO and N are the most popular here in the UK, N being about half the size. N is great if you don't have a lot of space, but it's fiddly, OO has a big footprint, but for ease of use you need to put a lot of time into details to make the models look good. They don't just run trains for the fun of it, there has to be a reason why each train is going in each direction and why each and every load or person is on that train. Are those shipping containers on that train full or empty and if so what is in them in each direction? So you need to know something about the economic situation for that railroad and even that line or that train. What about future business opportunities for that railroad? Will there be a mine of some sort opening up close to one of their lines? Will whatever is dug out of that mine be used locally, intrastate, nationally and exported internationally? Does it need further processing before use or export? How about the Geography of where the railroad is located both above ground and below the ground? The nicest thing about model railways is the satisfaction you get crafting a scene. The trains are almost an excuse just to enjoy your dreams and get into a world where 3:30 nobody is rude, abusive, or harmful. It's pure fun, as is football. I'd much rather model a game of cricket than go to one.
Me too, but it was a very Irish girl response. Do anything out of the ordinary in Ireland and you're a nerd unless you're making loads of money out of it. Needless to say, I don't date Irish girls.
The model railway hobby is one of the best hobbies. It offers endless amount of skill development. As has been highlighted by others in comments on here. It certainly was a life saver for me in my late teens. (Otherwise I would probably be dead from alcohol and drugs. Or be in jail, because I would have eliminated people who pissed me off). The people who usually make fun of the hobby, are in many cases ill informed about the hobby. No doubt the stereotyping of Model railway enthusiasts from some sectors of the media, assists in making people feel that it's uncool to be a model railway enthusiast. Model building hobby as a whole is as equally skillful as artists who create sculptures and paintings. Yet no one makes fun of these people, or thinks that they are not cool. Because they are regarded as highly talented and skillful. Model building skills are no different. Yes, it can be expensive. But the costs of development and production of a model steam locomotive. Can be hundreds of thousands of dollars investment from the manufacturer. Depending on the level of detail? Which generally determines the price. It is possible to enjoy the hobby on a modest budget.
This is yet another thing separating Brits and Americans. Brits talk about their train experiences and say, “Do you remember…..” and we talk about the grain trains that block our way. I’d like to cross the pond just to take a journey by rail.
Never mind Judith's pessimism. There's plenty to do here. The thing most Brits and Americans alike don't truly appreciate is the size difference. In Europe, you can drive 5 hours and visit five countries. Here, you can drive five hours and never leave most states. So here, plane travel has come to rule, but we still do have plenty of trains to enjoy. Cheers mate! :)
Probably he could have been a highly creative and skilled engineer. Can’t do that and be a global music superstar. But maybe this is his outlet for the desire to design and build things and get really good at it. He would probably love the process. Good on him.
What is the point of any hobby. Women will never understand men's hobbies. Mainly to hide away from the drab reality of the miseries of politics, of any description. And other things.
It is not just women that mock hobbies of men. We attend Steam Fairs and the like, with a collection of diecast model cars. I am often mocked by both men and women! Kids love the display we have. But so what? I get 4 or 5 days free motorhome park up and have food vehicles on site, a pub with very cheap drinks and entertainment! And it costs me nothing. At our next show, I will be taking our trainset to be running when we are at the pitch. Let them laugh, let them mock, I get the best deal!
Stick it to them mate! I look at those die-cast cars and trucks and remember that I once had one or two of them. It takes time and effort to build up a collection worthy of display. Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
I know it's an entertainment program and I shouldn't take it seriously but the comment that Rod's model railway creative talents are rudely dismissed as destroying his masculinity are just feeding the current problems with rampant misogyny. Yes I will declare my bias as a keen model railway builder and no interest in football. With the recent killings and attacks on women from rampant masculinity, in a few days there will be some big football match, for which I have no interest in, but for a lot of women they will fear because statistics show there will be an increase in in domestic violence during the match - something that never occurs when the next model railway show is on.
No one died drinking safe water either. But people have more fun on alcohol, and people have bad times on alcohol. Model railway builders are water. But then you’re getting in that murky area where it sounds like victim blaming people for wanting alcohol and not water. You dig?
Agreed. Football (and sports culture in general) is rife with misogyny, violence, homophobia, and mindless tribalism. Yet it is heavily (and aggressively) supported by the mainstream media and by politics. How many politicians pretend to support a football team (often with embarrassing lack of knowledge) in order to win vote?! Yet theatre - and the arts in general - are widely mocked and derided, hideously underfunded and under supported, and generally considered by the masses to be 'gay' or at least lacking masculinity (and therefore credibility or gravitas). So as a lifelong member of the professional theatre community, and a former Stage Manager and Lighting Designer (also a film and television technician), I am hugely appreciative of the skill and talent involved in crafting a high-end model railway, and I respect and admire anyone who would rather devote their passion to that, rather than f'king football! Also, I'm really sick of people attacking anyone who displays a PRIDE flag for one month of the year, yet it's okay to have England flags festooning every pub and house in the country during footie season. One flag represents peace, unity, and tolerance. The other (has come to represent) divisive tribalism and yob culture. Yet Suella Braverman described the Pride flag as "monstrous" and representative of "mutilating children" - this from a mother who circumcised her son! Sorry about the rant. Triggered! lol

As a scale model collector (although I collect cars, not trains), it is a bit upsetting. Also, I am surprised that Sandi likes model railways. I didn't see that coming.

As a former underground employee, I have had trained at Ashfield House many times. I so wanted to play with the model railway. Interestingly Napoleon III spoke French with a German accent.
People who haven't seen the whole episode must be baffled by some of the callbacks. 😀
Are they callbacks, or are they just cheeky insults thrown about by ignorant Mellenials?
@@loggior.speedweed4345 They’re callbacks: references to jokes made earlier in the show. Swinging over the harbour must be especially perplexing if you don’t know the context.
I think the days when it was okay to mock hobbies that involve a lot of skills are probably passing.
I'd be inclined to agree but women belittling men and their interests seems to be in fashion these days.
@@davidkavanagh189 Maybe It's a hangover from all those "women are clever men are stupid" sitcoms ("Men Bahaving Badly", "Scrubs" etc)!

Model railways is the 10th Art !! Big Tribute to dear John Allen : Ze First, and ze BEST modeller of XXth century ! don't need journalist...just Fans !
During the Second war the British MOD had the ultimate model railway. Longmoor Military Railway where army drivers and signallers were trained.
Sandi doing a Pepe Le Pew impression.
I heard it as “I’m French - why do you think I have this outraaageous French accent, you silly King.” (John Cleese in the Holy Grail)
Would have though Aisling had an appreciation for railways after spending a day with Francis
Me too, but it was a very Irish girl response. Do anything out of the ordinary in Ireland and you're a nerd unless you're making loads of money out of it. Needless to say, I don't date Irish girls.
Sandi, what you really need are 16mm to the foot scale live steam trains, so much more satisfying than 4mm electric models🤠
Same as fish in a tank. It's soothing for some people.
It's truly incredible how ugly people come off when they put down the beloved hobbies of others.
Because tiny little trains make me happy. Simple.
Sandi's French is awesome! 👏👏👏
Missed this one. when Holly Walsh is on we turn it off.
This is yet another thing separating Brits and Americans. Brits talk about their train experiences and say, “Do you remember…..” and we talk about the grain trains that block our way. I’d like to cross the pond just to take a journey by rail.
@CarlosBenjamin
No you don't. Our railroads are pale imitations of their former selves. Go to Canada. Or Japan.
@@judithann7193 ew to both lol, go to Switzerland where they apologize saying "sorry the train is late, it will be 30 seconds behind schedule"
@@judithann7193 Oh, Japan would be nice. Canada would be close, but I’ve not heard anything about their railroads.
@@barleyeducated8714 I think 5 hours will get you out of most states, just not Alaska or Texas.
Rod is not the only one with a model railway, Jools Holland, Eddie Izzard, Pete Waterman, Roger Daltrey and Frank Sinatra.
Aisling, Holly and Cally… what a perfect line up of female comedians 😂
I was sad that she said she would do it in French, then mocked the French
Mocked? I did not see mocking.
God i can never remember the Irish ladys name but her voice and accent is just devine
While I'm not familiar with these hosts, the one host who admitted she ran a small engine along her office room wall is a legend.
Probably he could have been a highly creative and skilled engineer. Can’t do that and be a global music superstar. But maybe this is his outlet for the desire to design and build things and get really good at it. He would probably love the process. Good on him.
Buttered Soreen was a great snack
Was? Is!
What is the point of any hobby. Women will never understand men's hobbies. Mainly to hide away from the drab reality of the miseries of politics, of any description. And other things.
They need to take a look at the live steam passenger hauling model locomotives built in home workshops.
Dude, genius way to tour the country! My hat's off to you!
Well that's life
No one died drinking safe water either. But people have more fun on alcohol, and people have bad times on alcohol. Model railway builders are water. But then you’re getting in that murky area where it sounds like victim blaming people for wanting alcohol and not water. You dig?
PS I love model railways, Miniature Wunderland in Hamburg is the Mecca.
Triggered! lol

Air heads on the right hand side of the panel.😊
Whats the point of make-up, fake eyelashes, fake hair colouring, fake eyebrows, jewellery, handbags, fake nails etc etc etc
Sandi is exactly the kind of person who would have a quaint little model railway in her study
Canadian singer Neil Young is also into trains and invested in partial ownership of Lionel Trains to stave off bankruptcy of the company. He shares the interest with his kids.
Because different people have different tastes. Get used to it lol.
Model Railways have lots of points. They let you change the direction that the trains move.
Obviously not as sensible as $2000 handbags or bling.
$2000 handbags are barely the beginning. Try adding one, two or three more zeros to your price estimates. And some of those prices are for the fakes. The real ones cost stupidly serious money, like money you could buy a house with.
What's the point in designer clothes and handbags, or texting on Facebook or whatever you call it these days telling everyone you've just blown your nose or you've just had a latte? Each to their own as they say, and before you ask no I'm not into model railways
Sandy's French accent vs Stephen Fry's German accent: who wins?
QI sounds like the British version of "The View"
Oh please. The View (and its low-rent counterpart, The Talk) wish they could be this smart and funny, if this segment is a typical example. Then again, maybe they don't.
I'm genuinely baffled how anyone can look at that picture, be told that it's not a real photo but a scale model and then proceed to be unimpressed by it. You can at least appreciate the hobby and the time, money and efforts it takes to build a model like that without being dismissive. As a scale model collector (although I collect cars, not trains), it is a bit upsetting. Also, I am surprised that Sandi likes model railways. I didn't see that coming.
Any chance you can turn on auto captioning? It seems like captions are turned off on his account’s videos. I need captioning to understand the panel and I’ve never seen captions available for Qi videos on UA-cam. I think I’d watch a lot more if I had a fighting chance of being able to keep up.
The former end station of Orient Express in Constantinople has a museum with a model railway about a hundred years old, looks the same, does not work, needs repair.

Aisling, Cally, and Holly? If I had been in that studio I would hardly have been able to breathe! Three of the loveliest women to appear on the show....

Speaking for myself it's the God like power to create a whole community subject to your every whim.
To keep Rod Stewart amused of course.
So a panel of women who use make up, false eyelashes and all sorts of surgery take the piss out of a harmless hobby. What a time to be alive.
Saw the train and tried to duck it. Kicked first the gas and then the bucket! 😂
These Women are a disgrace. This man has put time, effort and alot of skill into this model railway.
