Absolutely pure genius. I only wish there was twenty series made. David Mitchell is a living legend. The whole cast is brilliant, and the play on words of old English is fantastic. I've watched every episode over and over. BRILLIANT. From Ireland 🇮🇪👍👍👍👍
This show is so witty and gives modern nods to the various Shakespeare conspiracies and modern problems (the ongoing commuter problems, for example). And the parody and the satirical puns!
Shakespeare strangely never appeared in Blackadder II, apart from one quick throwaway reference. It's like he's now compensating with a whole series; and the humour owes a lot to Blackadder.
The thing I never understood about Upstart Crow is why Ben Elton never went down the 'Shakespeare invented pantomime' route. After all he did some hilarious things with other ideas that he is supposed to have invented. He had it all there: The dame, the leading boy/girl, the charming but put upon servant, the hansom prince, the perfect villain. Plus many more. Perhaps he thought that is exactly what he was doing all the time and it was too obvious.
I think d Mitchelll is great, but I’ve never actually watched this. Not sure why? Maybe juts thought it was going to be a shite blackadder. But I’m going to catch up and watch it.
It's 100% a Ricky Gervaise impression : Fans were delighted when comedian Spencer Jones, who plays the Elizabethan clown named Will Kempe on Upstart Crow, revealed that Kempe was meant as an homage to Ricky Gervais’ The Office character, David Brent.
@@numberonedad The actor who played the character said that it was Ricky Gervais. Plus, when has Stephen Merchant ever laughed like that? Watch any clip of Gervais laughing and you'll see that it's him.
Wow. That really wasn't good at all. Surprising. A couple chuckles in over two hours. Normally the laugh track isn't so obvious but in this case, ouch. And the lame political commentary was fatally cringeworthy. That's not going to age well at all. I'd rather just listen to David Mitchell chat for two hours.
Yes too clever for modern bbc. Uses word play and humour. Very skilful writing with top actors who can make it work. Loved it. Oh forgot shows women not in modern light. Oops. Sorry. Must condemn. Terrible….
The Ben Elton of the 80s would be disgusted. What on earth happened to him in the interim that he thought this was even fit to put before any actors? It's lobotomised Black Adder. So awful. How depressing.

This was a great show, I loved it. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
yep, that's the plot of the show. do you need some congratulations for understanding it?
The funniest series I've seen in quite while .Brilliant
Just love the wittiness! All actors are magnificent!
Agree great actors ❤❤❤❤❤❤
38:08 Yes, come and sit down, Cuthbert, but all of us on the same side of the table because we are on television!
Brilliant, clever, funny writing. Wonderful command of words. One of the very few excellent programmes BBC televised. Bring it back!!!
David, Lisa Tarbuck and Harry Enfield !!!
What a family!
And the lovely Paula Wilcox 😊
This was a must watch for me when it was on local PBS station.
Love the way takes the piss out of the anti-Stratfordians by having Shakespeare as the real author of Marlowe’s plays 😅
David Mitchell as a frustrated genius is perfect casting.
Ben Elton is a genius to make Shakespeare so funny.

This is wonderful! God I love David Mitchell.
Had Shakespeare hoisted on me in high school. At the time a lot of ughhh n groans. In retrospect, I can answer the odd Jeopardy question or two😂.
hoisted means lifted you mean foisted as in forced. good try though
Nice to hear comedy with impressive knowledge 🎉
This is fantastic just so funny and great acting ❤❤❤❤❤
Agree it's great.❤❤❤❤❤❤
@vivienneoneill5400 🥰🥰🥰
@vivienneoneill5400 😍

This reminds me of PBS before the pandemic. I loved this show.
Love this show.
Actor, Mr. Kemp does a slight Ricky Gervais imitation. It's funny.
Heh, I don't think there's anything 'slight' about it :P
Upstart Crow was the name of my brother's rock band in high school 😅
Great series.
Agree.❤❤❤❤
Brilliant
Agree.❤❤❤❤❤
Marlow is so handsome I can't
I saw Liza Tarbuck in Henry IV pt 1 at the National Youth Theatre back in the 80's! Really enjoyed it.
Liza Tarbuck is really gifted, she just keeps getting better too
Wonderful
These are the best parts? I can't imagine what the bad parts are like. It's as funny as a Shakespeare comedy.
Best TV show ever.
Great cast.
Nice quadrature of the rectangle with the globe theater drawing.
One needs some experience with reading Shakespeare for this to be funny.
oh no you dont...
19: 27 is a reference to Jack Whitehall , spot on
1:25:28 "Coachman ho!"😂
its like a suit of armor when all see him as clad in irony

I would like to see what Americans make of Upstart Crow!
I love it! I am addicted to British comedy!😂
He almost broke her with "shitting ditch! 🤣 1:01:57
Here from bg3, Tim Dowine is such a discovery.
I think d Mitchelll is great, but I’ve never actually watched this. Not sure why? Maybe juts thought it was going to be a shite blackadder. But I’m going to catch up and watch it.
It's very cleverly written and hilarious.
It’s awful.
@@markpalmer9844It really isn't; it's just not as good as Blackadder. But it beats the crap out of a lot of modern comedy series.
I think your gut is right about the sh*te part. Jesus, Brit comedy is god awful sometimes. Shakespeare must be doing about 10,000rpm.
It's absolutely not a poor second to brilliant Blackadder. Definitely worth a watch!
Wait a minute, I don't see Edward de Vere anywhere...
Good!
36:46 Bob is Back!
Shut up Kemp 😂
7:00 it's London British all over again .... wonder if there's an ink shortage?
I doubt 3 centuries from now a click of oxbridge University snots will be running the country😂😂
This reminded me I need turnips.
Heh, Cuthbert.
Lol. Is the award ceremony at the end an ironic joke about Shakespeare in Love winning the Oscars over better films like Saving Private Ryan?
Gemma Whelan is so cute 😍
Bob was good
He's your uncle
@Joedirt3349 aunt fanny treated him well .
in case you didn't know kemp is doing a stephen merchant impression
actually its a Ricky Gervais impression.
@satyasyasatyasya5746 nah def more steve

Red kmers hers
Only a few
Far too clever for bbc now. Above level of those paying presenters. Mitchell brilliant. Want more of his detective type work puzzler.
Too bad they can the show.
Can they?
@@HKGweilo😂
@@HKGweiloTo can or not to can?
Two episodes in, I realized that Kemp, the awful comedian character, is based on Ricky Gervais.

Temu Blackadder anyone?
Cheap clichéd comedy for chavs is so funny, isn't it?

Laugh track. How awful.
It was shot in front of a live audience, it's them you hear. :)
Assumes the listner has education.rems some Shakespeare plus general knowledge. Fail.
You fail with that keyboard bashing you call a comment.
not really. you dont need any Shakespeare knowledge for this to be funny.
people will get confused and wonder when blackadder will appear not a good idea this unless it was just for the cash
That speaks more about the people than the show, not understanding the wit of Shakespeare or wordplay.
@@lisaleone2296 but its not funny which is a problem for a comedy series

Blackadder rip-off
Oh behave!
Not funny. The laugh track was finding difficult to raise a chuckle!
You prefer comedy without live audience?
Sounds like a live audience to me!
As funny as a verruca in your eye ball
Engrish? Pidgin, 😂
Ahaaaa bless! You don't get it do you? You must know your Shakespeare to understand.
Shite!
Talking about yourself?
No need to announce to all what you're up to..
Worst comedy ever.
I guess you haven't seen a lot of comedy then. There are many shows that are much worse than this.
A tad above your head?
Bloody laugh track puts me off.
@@richardcooper9167 You mean the live studio audience that a lot of comedy shows use?
@ I looked it up and upstart crow was filmed with a 'live' audience, so I was wrong. It's still too bloody intrusive though.
Upstart Shite. it's almost as if it were written by the 5th form and fawned over by the rest of the Prep. Very sad.
Pip pip!
Understand not.....? Bless!
@ladydiva295 I have a first in English and it's boring shite. What am I missing?
