All my time growing up observing and trying to play guitar, there are so many guitar players feel that shredding/playing fast is the benchmark of good players. While that has it's place , If David Gilmour had not picked up the guitar we never would have experienced the space between the notes.
Memories...Good Memories. Part 1 and 2 will take a while. I never try to emulate an Artist exactly because in this case, I'm not David Gilmour...I just play what comes from the heart and it sounds like me...I believe it shows more Respect to the Artist.
Obviously the second solo is a much longer and more epic one, but this first solo is beautiful as well. So many melodies with intense bending, it’s just another masterpiece. The fact that there are two solos is like the best gift from a God. David Gilmour is a legend of note!!
what you do so well is not clutter your videos up with senseless chatter. you stay on mark and to the point with excellent historical moments of the song and artist.
These have always been my all time favorite guitar solos of all time. Even my mother would like this...so melodic. So glad you have a lesson for both of these great solos. Thanks for all the hard work.
love every lesson you do. You are such a great teacher, never stop! I love your retro song tutorials and your new ones from sheeran/mayer and whoever contemporary. YOUR AWESOME!
When ever I really want to learn something, you are most definitely the go to guy. Gr8 lessons, so closely duplicating the recordings with not just the right notes but impeccable phrasing and technique. Thank you so much for your unselfish contributions to the guitarist community and fans of classic rock everywhere. On to solo #2.
Great lesson. I love your "typing" analogy. Spot on, and it cant be stressed enough how important learning to FEEL the notes really is. I went thru that phase when I first started playing and it really became an obstacle to overcome because it created a muscle memory for both my hands. My best advice for new players is to always start with learning to feel what you are playing. Thank you.
+brian patrick Thanks Brian. It's really ALL about feel for me. Whether you're playing 32nd notes or just holding onto one, you gotta feel connected to them and really mean it! cheers
I love your observation about being able to sing a guitar solo......Spot on. A lot of people can crank out a lot of notes but the memorable ones have a melody. Harrison was not blazingly fast but his solos have so much melody. Carlos Santana and David Gilmore are surely among those gifted guitar players whose solos can be sung!!!
Another terrific tutorial with a great sound! Comfortably Numb solo's 1 and 2 and Ten Years After "I'd Love To Change The World" solo are the best solo's of all time on my list. I will be making a PP donation. Thanks again for sharing!
Very good knowledge of the solo, thanks for that. He's obviously done the work of seeing how it's done live, as well as exactly how it is played on the studio recording, so you don't have to.
your a great player I could go watch you every night thanks .your feel is on par with the greats don't be putting yourself down to far my friend and thanks for your time for us all on this lesson appreciated please keep it up
well... this is my holy frail of solos to learn and you sir just earned a sub. love beatles, stones, the doors, pink floyd, zeppelin, and of course 90s era groups. looking forward to new lessons from you
I own the Lick Library DVD that covers this lesson, and your lesson is MUCH better, Sir! You have a natural way if teaching that just makes these complicated solos simpler to understand.
I second that. I also own the Lick Library DVD, and two key differences are that you talk a lot less, and you teach by phrasing, rather than by individual notes. Makes all the difference with the subtleties of Gilmour's timings.
You like the same guitar solo's that I do, and you play and teach them well. I've been working on this song for a while now. I just switched to 9's and find the bends easier to control. That helps a lot on songs like this and "Hotel California", where the bends are super controlled and important to bend them just right. Thanks for posting!
+00xanawolf00 Yeah, I've never played these in bands so I'm learning them for the first time. I really have had such a good time with these. When ever I learn stuff from great guitar players it really hits home just how good these guys are and how much passion and creativity goes into the music. cheers
+Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials Yeah, I understand that. Believe it or not, up until a little while ago, I hadn't known much about Joe Satriani. Then, after watching your lesson on, "Always with me, Always with you", I developed a much greater appreciation for him and his music.
Nice teaching and playing. And nice tone and feel on the Les Paul. Played on a strat, the whammy bar does help with the feel. And you're right, it's all about feel, and Gilmour is the king of feel. It is harder technically when you do minor third bends with vibrato in tune like Gilmour does.
Great tutorial! Can't wait for the second solo lesson! Would love to see a tutorial on the Live solos, like Pulse or Live in Gdansk. They're so much better than the album version!
Man, I just subscribed to your channel.. wow!! Not only are the vids great, but I have a Boss GT 100 going thru a PA, and I'd give part of my right pinky to have your tone!!!
Whoa. Thank you SO much! Fantastic playing (you did DG real justice and that's not common on UA-cam) and great lesson. I've got it nailed just need time and practice to polish it. On to solo 2.
I'm finally officially out of positive comments to post that I have not already posted about your lessons, so I'm moving to the five star rating system. Five stars!!! Happy Thanksgiving from the North Coast of Ohio. Gilmour is one of my favorites players of all time, and I am truly a Floyd junkie cant wait for part two, but I'm guessing its going to be another Five star lesson.
As usual, great lesson. Near the end of the lesson you make mention of feel which is so over looked. For me, I don't care if you can hit a million notes a second, if it doesn't get under your skin what's the point? One song I know of that does this for me is a song titled, "Stone Cold Sober' from the 1977 album by Crawler. (Studio version better than the live one). I do believe Geoff Whitehorn was the guitar player. (I'm at work and don't have my collection near me). Download it...you won't regret it. I dare anyone to listen to this song and then not want to sit down and play along.
I learnt to play this first part from another player but much prefer your way of playing and I'm having trouble as I get half way through it and it all goes to pot so I'm just going to practice till I get it right so thanks for keeping me busy and I'm enjoying every moment.
Dude Thank you Very Much that was Really Helpful!!!! David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist!!! We just went and saw him at the Hollywood Bowl on March 25th :~) God Bless you my friend!! Keep up the Great work!
+hemixprs Thanks, timing is everything in music. I'm more old school and tend to play behind the beat. I find that the less experienced guys pretty well always rush and play ahead of the beat. Now days though, with the advent of digital recording ala pro tools etc. the focus is more right on the beat, which I don't really like that much...mostly because I think being a bit more flexible with time makes for way better feel. Thanks for watching. cheers
Excellent Lesson, you have a wonderful feel and method, I'll forgive ya for not using a Strat... :) But you got that LP sounding pretty close to Gilmore... Thank you for taking the time to make these lessons, I certainly appreciate it. I've looked at many for these solos so far and I'm enjoying this one the most.
I think this is a good learning video of how to play the first solo of comfortably numb except for one thing. At about the time 4:07 in the video he says play the D string at the 7th fret twice because he says that is what is done on the studio version, I think he has to go listen to that studio version again because I don't hear it after listening to it over 10 times now. Gilmour plays that part the same way live and on the album/studio version, if he was right other people would play it like that and I'm yet to see a video of someone playing it or teaching it that way.
feel is feeling what your playing taking time to get it perfect and clear compared to heavy metal your everywhere and fast burning energy. play something nice and smooth is feel where it takes you plus the artist who played it to another place.
You just trick us into thinking you actually play the thing when you obviously just hit play on the original record... 😄 Top notch as always sir, thanks again
you always seem to do lessons on the songs i wanna learn. you make learning this stuff easy without having to dig out inaccurate tabs from 10 yr old magazines in the closet. thanks!
Definitely earned a sub when you said at the start of the video you can't sound like Gilmore because your not him well I say your pretty dam close! nice job 👍
Any chance you could share with us the amp/pedal settings to capture the tone more accurately? Also, The Doors Light my Fire guitar would make a great tutorial. Awesome playing by the way, I learned a lot from you.
@cerclesvicieux 0 seconds ago I have not tried my hand at this solo yet. In an interview with Rick Beato, Warren Haynes (I'm pretty sure this is where I heard it) says this is the "perfect" song & solo. Superb sound, well paced delivery in the lesson. You have nailed this one, as always. Thank you. Did you use any TC modulation effects in the demo ? Did you use compression or overdrive or do you achieve that with your amp and two notes ? You nailed the sound. Can you please do "Shine On" ? These solos are melodic classics of our time. Every note has it's place in the harmony, thank you for pointing the harmony out through the lesson.
+tweed guitar Hey Tweed, thanks for all the nice comments! Yeah, I didn't use any kind of modulation, just the delay and some reverb, no pedals, just the amp with the gain at around 3'o'clock. Thank again for your support over the last few months. cheers
Yea its like love making,,,, those little xtra bits of timing AND THE WAY YOU DO IT ,,,, make all the difference lol you can play as fast as you like but,,,,,,, i think you know what i mean
So much to learn, thank you so much for sharing. As you said, this is one of the top solos ever and just happens to be my favorite, just ahead of Hotel California. Amazing what these guys did with their guitars and how timeless it has been that we are still eager to learn how to play them. Would you say you can learn the feel through practice of others songs or do you need to have it from inside of you?

the benchmark of good players. While that has it's place , If David Gilmour had not picked up the guitar we never would have experienced the space between the notes.
Ever heard of Santana?
The Stairway To Heaven solo has a lot of space too. But Gilmour gives whole new meaning to emotion and feel in solos.
Heard of Mark Knopfler?
Memories...Good Memories. Part 1 and 2 will take a while. I never try to emulate an Artist exactly because in this case, I'm not David Gilmour...I just play what comes from the heart and it sounds like me...I believe it shows more Respect to the Artist.
Agree
One of the great pleasures in life is listening to a Gilmour solo. No one can convey emotion better than he has on guitar.
Obviously the second solo is a much longer and more epic one, but this first solo is beautiful as well. So many melodies with intense bending, it’s just another masterpiece. The fact that there are two solos is like the best gift from a God. David Gilmour is a legend of note!!
That sound is from heaven :P
+NightPanda Thanks bud. cheers
what you do so well is not clutter your videos up with senseless chatter. you stay on mark and to the point with excellent historical moments of the song and artist.
This solo gives me the same chills I had when I first worked it out 30 years ago and then taught it to Gilmour.... j/k
Homertoeclipper lol nice..i helped john with his drumming
And I helped waters with his melodic vocal's line..
steff serpent whos john?
Haikal Fauzi john bonham
Fantastic comment !!!
That was perfect, so melodic and is better than the second solo IMO. Superb. Well done.
I have loved this solo forever. It has the tears of sorrow all through it. Great job on the teaching.
These have always been my all time favorite guitar solos of all time. Even my mother would like this...so melodic. So glad you have a lesson for both of these great solos. Thanks for all the hard work.
First 2 solos I learned was hotel California and comfortably numb
Yet again, appreciate your work my friend. Pro and concise and makes me pull up my socks each time I jump into a lesson. Thank you again.
love every lesson you do. You are such a great teacher, never stop! I love your retro song tutorials and your new ones from sheeran/mayer and whoever contemporary. YOUR AWESOME!
+Ryan B Thanks a lot Ryan, I appreciate you taking the time to leave such a nice comment. cheers
I like the way you don't play around and get to the point. I usually do my own thing after many years. Great video
Thank you! …for a great lesson and underlining those subtleties that put this guitar solo up with the very best of them.
Great lesson and I agree with you about the "feel", and the players you mentioned
you are killing me. i told myself i will only per-fect 10 songs and here u go doing this one. this one goes to 11. thanks.
that les paul sounds just lovely- great video and playing thank you !
Great lesson. I love your "typing" analogy. Spot on, and it cant be stressed enough how important learning to FEEL the notes really is. tasty playing would be the biggest understatement here
+guitarist6494 Delectable playing

Yes. Best ever. Emotions. Deep. Speed doesn't give this to the listener. Gilmour is my favorite and has been for 46 years. Lol
Very good knowledge of the solo, thanks for that. He's obviously done the work of seeing how it's done live, as well as exactly how it is played on the studio recording, so you don't have to.
As always...an impeccable presentation. Gilmour is a genius.
By far the best replica of the solo I have heard and the best tutorial. Excellent buddy - Keep bringing them on.
This is one of the most beautiful cover solos ever! It's like I am dreaming! Absolutely euphoric!
That guitar looks great and the tone is incredible. Nice lesson!
You did the one I have been waiting for you to do. OUTSTANDING!!!
+Jeff Downey Thanks Jeff.
thanks for share this "how to", is the most exceptional and emotional solo i ever heard, you make my day man

Whoa. Thank you SO much! Fantastic playing (you did DG real justice and that's not common on UA-cam) and great lesson. I've got it nailed just need time and practice to polish it. On to solo 2.
Great lesson...I love your intonation...thanks for posting

I would love to see you do a planet caravan tutorial..especially the solo...

one more proof that you don't have to be gear chasing all day long to make it sound legitimate. As always, top work here sir.

Awesome as always
Awesome lesson Thank You
Que excelentes tocan los exponentes de los tutoriales, gracias por compartir sus conocimientos musicales de manera muy profesional.
you play with great finesse and accuracy.....timing on this solo makes or breaks the whole enchilada
+hemixprs Thanks, timing is everything in music. I'm more old school and tend to play behind the beat. I find that the less experienced guys pretty well always rush and play ahead of the beat. Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials What string size are you using?
Was wondering if you can figure out how to play this riff sounds pretty kool thanks
you always seem to do lessons on the songs i wanna learn. you make learning this stuff easy without having to dig out inaccurate tabs from 10 yr old magazines in the closet. thanks!
Mr. Shutup, you are the best!
Very good! Keep up the good video cover guitar tutorials...
Definitely earned a sub when you said at the start of the video you can't sound like Gilmore because your not him well I say your pretty dam close! nice job 👍
Gilmore, My favourite guitarist without a doubt.
David gilmour also did it on a high stung guitar were the 3d 4th and 5th string are an octive higher
very good lesson
Awesome tutorial.....thanks
Can You Please Give us tabs if there are any I am really confused on the parts after the first 2 bends. Thank you!
Thank you teacher.
That was downright Awesome!
Any chance you could share with us the amp/pedal settings to capture the tone more accurately? Also, The Doors Light my Fire guitar would make a great tutorial. Awesome playing by the way, I learned a lot from you.
4:21 - On the studio recording, it is B -> A.
Definitely 2 A notes here...ua-cam.com/video/_FrOQC-zEog/v-deo.htmlm53s
Any info on the delay settings? Sounds so dreamy..
Very well done. A lot of the other versions I’ve heard their bends were way out of tune. It’s the heart of Gilmour’s playing. Nice vibrato to boot.
thank you very much!

I have not tried my hand at this solo yet. In an interview with Rick Beato, Warren Haynes (I'm pretty sure this is where I heard it) says this is the "perfect" song & solo. I never really thought about it like that, but it is quite the compliment, so I thought I would give it a shot.
Superb sound, well paced delivery in the lesson. You have nailed this one, as always. Thank you.

That's some mighty fine bending there fella.
Yea its like love making,,,, those little xtra bits of timing AND THE WAY YOU DO IT ,,,, make all the difference lol you can play as fast as you like but,,,,,,, i think you know what i mean
Brilliant, any tutorial for a great day for freedom
Bloody great guitaring.
Gracias buen tutorial
So much to learn, thank you so much for sharing. As you said, this is one of the top solos ever and just happens to be my favorite, just ahead of Hotel California.
