We had a guy last season come up to our door and told me this long story of how his family would starve this winter if I didn't let him hunt my property, took out pictures of his family to show me and I almost said yes because I felt bad until something in my gut told me to look at his vehicle to see if his family was with him and maybe offer them some food or something and instead of noticing his family in his vehicle I noticed his vehicle. It was a new Dodge 2015-16 jacked up on big mud tires then the little things started jumping out at me, everything from his clothes to boots to even that he smoked like a chimney and cigarettes are not cheap in any store, that's why I quit and to top it off he was holding a high dollar cell phone. Ill tell you this now, if my family was possibly gonna starve, I would do anything and give up everything to make sure they had food on the table, So need-less to say he got a "No" from me.
I lost permission to hunt the property I've been at the day after I watched your video.
I checked out my county's GIS maps and found a 357 acre farm. I googled the owners names and found a phone number. One phone call later I have permission to hunt the place! Thanks for the advice!
Great to hear! Best luck to you this season!
That's awesome!
I also ask for permission to hunt private land for free. I'll add one tip to this that I have found works. Many times I will get an initial no from a land owner, but then I go on to explain that I only bow hunt and the owner changes his mind. I have found many land owners just don't want the responsibility of firearms on their property. So if you are only interested in bow hunting, don't forget to mention that to the land owner.
Great tip John!
That guy asking the question sounds like a real goober. :)
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question! Since I initially submitted it, I did work up the courage to go ask the guy who owns the 50 acres behind my house. His answer, "no, but thanks for asking. If things change, I'll let you know.". Just getting out of my comfort zone and asking made me realize that it isn't that tough.
I'm going to commit to hunting my hunt club and some public land this season since it starts next week, but I'm going to hit it hard next spring and hit the road asking as many as it takes to get a few more options under my belt.
Great to hear T.J.! Best of luck this fall, and on your quest for a spot or two to hunt in 2017!
Very good advice guys, thank you so much.
it is a privilege that is disappearing in Indiana. Every good property is leased. Watching the land you hunted for 20+ years disappear is like losing a part of your soul.
Asking guys about getting permission when u know damn well these guys aren't letting anyone on anything they own.
I have been offering meat and my assistance since I was 12. I am now 42 and still am getting permission to bowhunt only. Have never asked anyone to gun hunt. I just don't care for it much anymore.. Way to many hunter's in Wisconsin's woods nowadays and not as many deer. And one other thing.. Don't go to somebody's house smelling like alcohol. Guaranteed NO.. I still have never killed a giant in all my years of hunting though. My biggest deer is 147in 8pt. Don't get me wrong I want to shoot more bucks but Im not wealthy and need a full freezer to feed my family. So I don't pass many Doe till my freezer has 4 deer in it. I can't eat the horns and I love venison.. I am by no means a trophy hunter. But Im a damn good provider, father, and freezer filler.
Had gotten many “NOs” so I bought land. The end.
depends on the landowner lots of places down here around me in southeast Iowa still tell you to kill them all just depends but most places already have people hunting.
Got GPS coordinates for your area? Asking for a friend.
Great tips guys love the new podcast. Been binge listening getting pumped up for opening day here in Ohio!!
Thank you! Wishing you good luck in Ohio!
Thanks for listening!
It has become a money market in Wisconsin. It has come to a point that if you can not come up with, in most cases, thousands of $$$$$. You dont get on private land.
That is exactly right! it is the same way here in MN. Thats why hunting is dying around our area because if you don't have a lot of money you can't hunt. And no one will let you hunt unless your pay.
Mark Kenyon, don't knock on doors, Mark Drury said He could never say no to you! Just ask him for permission! ;)
LOL ! Good point, that'll be in my notes for the next show haha!
I live in Nebraska and I can relate to mark drury it's easy to get turkey hunting land. but land for deer hunting is a lot harder to get at least here southeast Nebraska
Its hard all over man i know. Thats why i think hunting is dying in my area there are WAY less hunters now then there ever was because its all coming to money if you can't buy your own land or lease land you won't hunt. Everyone that i have asked to hunt they all ask how much I'm willing to pay. Its hard to hunt almost anywhere now days. Public land is a good thing but around here anyway it gets hunted hard i mean real hard cause no one will let you hunt private.
Even though there is a liability clause in GA that protects the landowner from any liability... everyone says no.
It pains me to see the outdoor shows that hunt GA lands that are simply not realistic for the every day guy...its more like the stuff of my dreams.
really low, creepy: hi mark LOL
