I think Apollos was the human author of Hebrews for these reasons:
    1. The Greek in Hebrews is superior to that of Pauline.
    2. The author of Hebrews quoted excusively from the Septuagint. Apollos was an Alexandrian Jew (Acts 18:24) and most likely had the access to the Library of Alexandria.
    3. According to Luke, Apollos was an eloquent man and competent in the Scriptures (Acts 18:24). The admiration toward these qualities was perhaps the reason why some Corinthians said they are Apollos' followers. Again, the author of Hebrews was shown to be very skillful in exegeting the OT passages, more skillful than any other NT human authors.
    4. Apollos was an apologist (Acts 18:28) and Hebrews is all about apologetics.
    5. 1 Cor. 16:12 tells us that Paul urged Apollos to visit Corinth again which Apollos declined. I think that was probably because Apollos did not want further division among the Corinthians before Paul's epistle had the time to resolve the issue so he chose not to visit the Corinthians. That, in my opinion, could also be the reason why Apollos did not tell the Hebrews who the human author of the espitle was, as he wanted them to focus on the content rather than the person who wrote to them. This is if he was the human author of Hebrews.
    6. My response to the arugment saying that Apollos wasn't one of the original apostles is that, canonicity was never determined by whether or not the human authors were the original apostles but whether the content is apostolic. Therefore, if the writing of Mark and Luke were accepted as canon because of their associations with the original apostles, Heb. 2:3 should be convincing enough for us to put Apollos in the same rank as Mark and Luke. Also, the fact that the human author of Hebrews addressed Timothy as "our brother" in Heb. 13:23 means he was in the inner circle of Paul. Chronologically, the last we read about Apollos was in Titus 3, he was still a gospel partner of Paul after the event of 1 Conrinthians and was not among the names that deserted Paul in 2 Tim. 4 and surely Hebrews came after both Titus and 2 Timothy chronogically.

Great video! I’m almost certain that it wasn’t Paul who wrote Hebrews. I could very well be wrong, but here are the reasons:
    1. The writer(s) of Hebrews mentions that the Gospel was “confirmed unto us by them that heard Him”... stating that the author had heard the Gospel from the original apostles or those who had heard Messiah’s teachings. (Hebrews 2:3)
Paul wouldn’t say something like that honestly. Paul mentions that he did not receive his teachings of the Gospel from any man... nor the apostles, but by direct revelation. (Galatians 1:11-12,17)
    2. The writer of Hebrews left no salutation or greeting in the book as Paul would.
I could be completely wrong but that’s what I lean toward. 😊

Barnabus signed it anonymously in 13:22. "Word of exhortation" was his name. Acts 4:36-37. He liked to encourage believers. Also had an Epistle of Barnabus, that almost made it into the Bible, full of commandments, mentioned in Colossians 4:10.

It really made me upset to see some satanic rock and roll people doing small miracles in a dorm room at college and I saw this as a Christian and yet I can't find believers who actually know God well enough to ask Him simple questions. So the phony Christians can't conjer up a weeble to wobble from God but the demoniacs can make ashtrays slide across tables and other perverted crap. So you can find out who wrote Hebrews, IF you can find a real Christian. Ask some reborn children to pray and ask God about it and to write it down what they hear. Guess what........the kids can find out because only Childlike faith turns on God. Adults with scientific minds put God to sleep. Boring.......no faith there. How many believing unbelievers can't hear God and claim "my sheep hear my voice". A two way prayer life.......gets you a real bible education. You start it off with, hold up your bible and ask God to show you what He meant when He had it written, because its his book not mine.

My theory that Apollos wrote *HEBREWS* :
    1. Paul turned to the Gentiles (Acts 18:26).
    2. Apollos "mightily convinced the Jews" (Acts 18:28).
    3. HEBREWS is canonically behind Paul's writings.
    4. Hebrews not signed (2 Thessalonians 3:17). Probably felt unworthy to be ranked among the apostles since he never saw Jesus personally.
    5. Apollos identified with church pillars (1 Corinthians 1:12).
    6. Led to Christ by others, unlike Paul (ch. 2:3).
    7. The writer quotes only from the *LXX* , which was put together in Alexandria, Egypt; Apollos' hometown (Acts 18:24).
    8. The *NT* was written by the "apostles *or* their close associates" (Stephen Miller/COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BIBLE p. 299). Apollos was a close associate of Paul.
    9. Hebrews 13:22 states: "l have written a letter unto you in *few* words"--13 chapters--in contrast with Galatians 6:11, which Paul says was a "large letter"--only 6 chapters.
    10. HEBREWS several times referred to Jesus as "this Man" (ch. 7:24); something Paul would not likely say.
    11. Paul's letters were often choppy; going from subject to subject. HEBREWS flows with continuity.
    12. The author is most likely educated since the tone of this book is exuberantly verbose. Apollos was an educated and "eloquent man" (Acts 18:24).

and also, the book of Hebrews condemns people who've had full knowledge of Christ and returned to the old ways. It condemns them while they're actually still alive giving no hope to so call backsliders when Christ did not condemn them considering the story of the prodigal son.

The contents of Hebrews is powerful. I personally believe the writings of Hebrews is a little better than Paul's writing style. Hebrews, to me, is more clear, and better at expressing a point. This is an easy one for me, I focus on the contents, and really place little importance on authorship. The contents of Hebrews is biblically focused, specifically the OT, that we can agree on. It provides one of the best transition points from OT to NT. There is much to learn in Hebrews, and that's what I focus on. There were some interesting points brought up in this video, and I am always willing to hear, and learn, from the views of others. Thanks for the post.

It would be a little confusing if Timothy was the author. Heb. 13:23 refers to "our brother" Timothy being released. While Paul does refer to Timothy as "my true son in the faith", he also refers to him as "our brother" several times (Col. 1:1, Phil. 1:1, 1 Th. 3:2) so that seems consistent. You did touch on some good points in the video, thank you. I believe that the earliest suggestion for authorship is from Tertullian, who named Barnabas as the writer of a letter to the Hebrews. Personally, while I am open to Paul/Luke as author, I have always believed it was Barnabas who actually wrote it. It definitely reads more like a sermon than an epistle, as you said.

Excellent point. The theory would be that the writer of Paul's sermon added a personal note at the end as chapter 13 is directed at the reader as opposed to the rest of the book which is simply declaring truth. The "letter in a few words" if I'm right, would be the concluding note that is chapter 13.

great video and wonderful compilation of details and supporting passages. Heb 2:3 is also a passage that *may* dissuade me from the "Paul" camp, but I have also wondered if it was a sermon given by Paul and transcribed by Luke.
This might lend support to why the level of Greek is different in Hebrews vs the other Pauline letters.
Also, it is my understanding that the author of Hebrews always refers to the Greek Septuagint, whereas Paul's letters always refer directly to the Hebrew OT. If that is true, then it may lend support to the authorship of Apollos, who scripture tells us was Jewish, had a mastery level of the OT, and was an eloquent orator ... and hailed from Alexandria, Egypt - the exact place the Greek Septuagint had been translated. That is my bifurcated "vote": either a sermon given by Paul and transcribed and translated by Luke, or, an epistle written by Apollos.

  • @jaysonfederick5850
    @jaysonfederick5850 Рік тому +1

Every epistle was written with the clear intention to settle some question.
It is clear that the Hebrew letter is addressing the question:
How can we[Hebrew people know categorically that the worship of Jesus Christ is consistent with scripture?]
You can see its argument is to the religious but devoted Hebrew mind who does not want to base his faith in faith nor experience but firmly in the cencepts of the Torah.
It's the sum of all things.
Nowhere in scripture is any of the apostles credited with making the conclusive arguments as Paul.
All of them were ready to teach Christ pandering to Hebrew sentiments and prejudice from the beginning. To which there are numerous examples.
The tone of this letter is someone who has gone pass Hebrew sentimentality and see things as they really are in Christ Jesus and not afraid to draw the Hebrew religion to it's final conclusion.

That is a fair point and one I've considered. This could work with a writer who is penning the words of Paul from a neutral perspective, or multiple influences in the writing (including Paul), but, you're right, it does fit well with the possibility of a writer other than Paul.

The intro to the video stated:
"Luke claimed that he was the author of Luke in the Book of Acts."
Please provide a verse that says so. I do agree that Luke wrote it, but it is not directly stated.
    A larger concern:
    The video stated:
"John claimed that he wrote the Gospel of John, the Epistle of 1, 2 and 3 John and Revelation" Where?
How do you know that the "John" of Revelation is "the Apostle John"?
Where did anyone named "John" claim to write the 4th Gospel and 1,2, & 3 "John"?
These are all "traditions" that you are claiming to be written in the text.

    • @TheBibleExplained
      @TheBibleExplained  3 роки тому +4

Yours is a fair critique. Luke did claim to write Luke and Acts but not by name (Acts 1:1 and Luke 1:3). He referred to himself in personal pronouns ("I") because his friend Theophilus clearly already knew his name.
John did claim to write the Revelation, but when he claimed the gospel of John and 2nd and 3rd John he claimed the books without his name ("the disciple Jesus loved" and "the elder") just like Luke did. You are absolutely correct that 1st John was not signed at all.
However, we do know that they were written by John and Luke not just from "tradition". Men who lived with or just after the apostles and knew the apostles or else knew those who knew the apostles wrote about these books and confirmed that "the disciple whom Jesus loved" was John, that the "I" was Luke, and so on.
I chose to leave out the details so we not to make this a long video about unrelated things. My point with this statement was to show that the author of Hebrews never mentions himself in name or otherwise. I have felt since I made this video that I could have worded that statement in a more accurate way. Thanks for pointing this out.

Paul would not have written that the golden alter of incense was in the holy of holies, nor would Apollos, being mighty in the Scriptures, have misplaced the holy object. The key is that the writer couldn't go into detail about THAT 'now'. Why not? The temple may have been destroyed by the time this letter was written, and the writer didn't have real knowledge of the placement, only what he must have heard about it. Hence, the mistaken placement. Tabernacle 101

@@thangsanglian7532 I think you misunderstand the usage of "debt" when used to describe our sin. When we speak of our "sin debt", we mean that we have transgressed against God, sort of like a thief who breaks into someone's property and steals something valuable. That thief owes it to the person they've wronged to make the wrong right. If they damaged anything in breaking in, they must repair it, and they must return what they've stolen. In the same way we have damaged God's creation and we have stolen and used for our own selfish purposes all that God has given us to be stewards over. So we are indebted to repair and repay what we have stolen to make it right. However, we cannot possibly make it right. The debt is far more than we could ever pay. Now, in the example of the thief, God would be both the property owner whom the thief has robbed and also the judge who gives the sentence. God is just and demands that just restitution be made. We cannot make the payment and are destined for justice in hell as a result. So Christ died to satisfy the debt. He died to take our penalty for us. He gave his infinitely valuable life to , essentially, make that payment for us. Not because he bought us FROM anyone or anything, but because we owed an unpayable debt for our crimes. Jesus paid that fine (if you will) so that we can go free.

I think Jesus wrote it after He was resurrected but that’s just an idea.

Since about the time of Origen, scholars have noticed that stylistically Hebrews is very different from the Pauline epistles. I do not think this could be a sermon for unconverted Jews at synagogue, because the overall message of Hebrews is about preservance and holding fast to the faith, not joining it for the first time.

I think it was written/preached by Jesus to mirror the Book of Deuteronomy written/preached by Moses. Possibly Jesus entrusted it to someone to reveal it when the Temple was destroyed as He predicted. Think about it. If Jesus was trying to keep his authorship out of it, He would have written in the third person, though he does break with that from time to time. Try reading it with this in mind. I think you'll be surprised.

I've published an argument for a named, non-Pauline author. If you're here, you'll likely be interested in the video ua-cam.com/video/5Ovy6CdswEI/v-deo.html. I believe a common problem on this topic is the false presumption that the evidence for any author other than Paul is likely to be too thin for a strong argument. I'm a classicist, fwiw, and a Xian and would value any helpful criticisms and feedback on the argument.

    Awesome word
Paul was deeply erudite in word and power…. Look at his education under the tutelage of Gamaliel which the Holy Ghost knew and used…. Actually all scripture is given by His inspiration… is He not The Greatest Author of all time

this pastor misleading the information about the authors of the gospels. first it all nobody knows who wrote the gospels. they speak " according to Matthews, according to Mark, and according to Luke, and last according to John. this doesn't mean they did write the gospels. also, Mark and Luke were not disciples of Jesus. how come?? perhaps invention as I assume ???

Church fathers who knew the writers testify who the authors for example Polycarp wrote about John being the writer of John Gospel and 1 John because he personally knew John. Mark was a Diciple of Peter, Luke was a disciple of Paul and knew Mary personally and Mathew was a tax man so he would have known Greek.

    Hebrews 13:23-25
[23]Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty; with whom, if he come shortly, I will see you.
[24]Salute all them that have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy salute you.
[25]Grace be with you all. Amen. (Written to the Hebrews from Italy, by Timothy.)
Timothy was Paul's good friend. Hence 1 and 2 Timothy. Who else would be saying "I will see you" other than our brother Paul?
