Greetings Neil ! Sad news about Dame Maggie Smith. She was such a brilliant actress in so many films. She will be missed. Thank you for sharing your stories about the royals.
There was often more snobbery below stairs than upstairs. Each servant was extremely conscious of their position in the household and guarded it jealously.
I expect below stairs life was very tough back then and very hard work ,with no mingling with upstairs, unless you were a butler or ladies maid ,no wonder he employed actresses to present the food etc ,i expect the downstairs servants would have been so nervous incase they did anything wrong ! Fascinating story Neil Thankyou for sharing 👏👏👏💖😎
Love how your tie blends in with the skyline and bridge behind you 💞 These historical vignettes are simply fascinating! Thank you, Neil, for sharing with us 🥰 It would have been extremely intimidating for the staff to suddenly find themselves out of their element, and under scrutiny. I certainly would not want to be a scullery maid around Bertie and his lot.
I love these stories that you share with us. It's never too late to learn something new and interesting. Queen Victoria was an intelligent and well-educated woman, as was Queen Elizabeth.
Good morning Neil Another enlightening episode of life in service Heard of this life sytle from one who lived it, Her husband was a valet at some of the big hotels you feature in your stories She was a housekeeper to some of the big stars of those days Thank you take care stay safe
Wow, just goes to show, you never know who's in the room. I once watched a documentary about a school to train butlers which was really fascinating. Prior to watching that show I really had no idea of the training and knowledge required to perform the extensive duties. Must be a hard job, but just think of the stories you'll have to tell friends and family. Thanks for sharing.
@@lyndaf.5604 thank you for your thoughts, I had a few English butlers who worked for me in Saudi Arabia for the King. This was a few years back. They told me then that Megan was a nightmare during her stay at Kensington palace and at the wedding!!! Royal household staff bend over backwards to give the best service and respect to members of the royal household and guests, Trust me !!! Every thing you read and hear about the behaviour and personality of Meghan is 100% spot on. She is a terrible human being
@@stevenwalker3486 What a very sad and unfulfilling way for her to spend her life. I do hope you had a better experience during your time at the palace in Saudi Arabia. You must have had such an exciting, all-consuming time, not only fulfilling, but also anticipating, the wants and needs of the household. Thank you for your reply and all the best to you.
Once again thank you Neil for a very interesting period in history. What I have read about Prince Bertie, he would have known exactly where to go, to get these more accomplished maids.
Upstairs downstairs really opened your eyes on how the other half live and their servants. Thanks for another great story. Love these royal secrets of long ago.
👋👋 Thank you for such a beautiful historical story Neil. Your mesmerising and capitivating words shine through every magical memory, you are just brilliant. Upstairs Downstairs was truly iconic, i loved it, we have never seen the like since, but the memories last forever. Hxx👋👋🙏🙏🌹♥️🌟🌟🌺🏴
💜Yikes Neil 👋, my eyes weren't deceiving me in one of your earlier videos. I just the the evening lights were playing tricks in the film ! Oh lordy the bridge is a glorious pink. I never heard of it or saw it till the other video. I always try n pay so close attention to all the places you take us. This is a splended discovery for me. Oh wow its so beautiful to see. I had to google it. The Albert Bridge 🌉. I feel so much smarter now. Oh wow this is just great. And so love the 🩷tie. Neil so fun today, thank you ever so much. 💜🙏
My great aunt was in service, it was so sad for woman in those days as my aunt was clever and at university level. You're stories are really interesting gives us all the background.m❤️👍 Big wave.
Really interesting story, Neil. It made me wonder if Prince Harry took some tips from Bertie on how to snag an "actress" - "you get the picture." 😂 Saying hi from Kansas USA 🌻 👋👋👋🌻
I have learned so much from you and the rest of our Neil Sean family about UK and royal history. You tell us things that do not make the front pages or even the back pages for that matter but are far more interesting to learn about. Thank you!
I smile every time you mention Upstairs Downstairs. My family and I loved that show and never missed an episode. I always imagined that if I lived in that era there would be no privileged, spoilt life for me; I'd be downstairs. 😉
Ah, leave it to Bertie to pull a stunt like that. Well, keeping people employed is always a good thing. Sounds like they were providing all sorts of entertainment 'services', ahem. Interesting story Neil, thanks!
It all depended on who you were working for. My great grandmother was in service and ended up getting in ‘trouble’. She was lucky because the family looked after her - very unusual.
Thank You Neil...I Love history and these stories are about people's lives and everything involved in living through those times. Very hard for the servants I feel. RIP Dame Maggie Smith. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have the distinct feeling that after Prince Albert passed away, Queen Victoria was not paying all that much attention, and Dirty Bertie was the last Royal in court as a witness until Harry came along. Either way, Her Majesty Victoria wouldn't have been amused. A big 👋 from deep in the ❤ of Texas and Cheers y'all.😊
This is a great story Neil. As well as the err... 'ramifications' 🤭 of using pretty young actresses etc in these roles I like to think of the positive side, although, I suppose that depends on point of view. Would there have been marriages that came from these opportunities? A sort of Downstairs moving Upstairs? Lovely wifey tells me that in Downton an Irish chauffer climbed the stairs of repectability.
This was a very educational and interesting video. Too bad that these very informative videos don’t get the views that they deserve. Thanks again Neil. 🇺🇸
I admire you. You always look sharp. You could dress in a shirt and jeans and still look professional. I love your restarts when you flub up, proving you are human. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for another great story! It must have been quite scandalous at that time. I wonder if the staff were afraid to be found out. Big wave from AZ! 👋👋👋👋👋👋
I remember having dinner at Government House in Wellington and, as a blind person, being extremely discomfitted when the stewards silently placed and removed things without warning or even speaking with me. I was given the explanation that they were trained to be as invisible as possible, though when I specifically asked for them to communicate with me so that I didn't suddenly find I no longer had my dessert plate (for example), they obliged.
I've seen a lot of historic projects in TV/film on this subject and I have a question. Why weren't the staff allowed to keep working if they married? Is that still true today?
Yes, many out of work younger Actors and Actresses/Singers/Dancers work as wait staff or bartenders. Gets them noticed, helps make contacts, earns $$$ and is a flexible position with varied hours and easily left as needed. Yes, Actors and other entertainers are taught to be charming, to smile, to be good listeners, and most make an effort to do a bang-up job no matter if working in a menial position.
I had no idea. Oh, the drama. A real upstairs downstairs. I don't think I would have lasted very long, as im too chatty. I first saw Dame Maggie Smith in the 1970s in the movie The Prime of Miss Jean Brody. Brilliant film, and she quickly became a favorite actress of mine. Cheers!👋👋😁🇺🇸🇬🇧
Dirtie Bertie was certainly a worldly wise character. Waiting a long time for his "turn" allowed him lots of opportunity to explore extra curricula/activities Nudge nudge wink wink.
Dame Maggie Smith was truly the star of Downton Abbey I think.
Her loss is still breaking my heart 💔
What an interesting Currículum Vitae that of yours, Neil!. Thank you very much for sharing this story!. God bless!. ❤

You are an upstairs guy Neil that really care about and look after anyone downstairs . Ruby from upstairs downstairs was awesome . Big wave 👋
I've recently been watching Classic Emmerdale in the afternoon and I couldn't believe it when the actress that played Ruby popped up on it.
