📌The hidden story of the solfeggio📌
Around 1020, monk and music educator of the Benedictine Order of Pomposa, Italy.
“Guido d'Arezzo”
Guido d'Arezzo had a hard time teaching a new hymn to the boy choir.
The method of teaching singing at the time was that the teacher would sound out one note at a time, and the learner would listen and repeat indefinitely until they memorized it.
There was a primitive musical score called “Neume”, which originated from the Latin accent system, but it only showed the rough flow of the melody and did not know the exact pitch of the note, so it took weeks to learn a new song.
Gregorian chant came to mind to Guido d'Arezzo when he was struggling to find an easy way to teach hymns.

Evening Prayer Hymn on June 24th, ‘Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist’ during the Liturgy of the Hours
Guido d'Arezzo discovered that the first six verses each start with different notes and rise one note at a time.
And he found that all five vowels (A, E, I, O, U) together with six different consonants (T, R, M, F, S, L) form a “hexachord”.
Guido d'Arezzo used this to create “Solmization” by giving each note a unique name.
“Ut”
“Re”
“Mi”
“Fa”
“Sol”
“La”
“Ut queant laxīs Resonāre fibrīs Mīra gestōrum Famulī tuōrum,
Solve pollūtī Labiī reātum, Sāncte Iohannēs.”
Do let our voices resonate most purely,
miracles telling, far greater than many;
so let our tongues be lavish in your praises,
Saint John the Baptist.
Guido d'Arezzo devised the "4-line notation method", which became the root of modern 5-line music notation, and also created the "Guido's Hand" teaching method, which involves writing the name of a line on the knuckles and then pointing out the song to learn the song.
The choir boys were able to learn a new song within three days.
At the time, all hymns were six-note scales, so there was no seventh note “Si”, but around the 17th century, when the scale was expanded to octaves, the seventh note was added, and through the seventh verse of “Ut queant laxīs”, “Si” was added.
Also, Italian composer Giovanni Battista Doni changed the difficult-to-pronounce “Ut” to “Do”, which is a shortened form of the Latin word “Dominus”, meaning “Lord”.
“Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Si-Do” is a tool to give greater praise to God, like everything else in the world, begins with God and ends with God.

Just as every note has its own name, we who live as Christians also have a name called ‘baptismal name’.
Just as one note creates a beautiful harmony with other notes, We pray that we all sing together to God and live in love with each other.

서양음악사적 이론으로만 알고 있었는데 실제로 들어보니 노래 자체가 너무 아름답네요.
같은 성요한 찬미가지만 선율이 다른 두 곡 모두 너무 좋습니다.
직접 불러보고 싶어서 곡을 익히느라 매일 아침 듣고 있습니다.
