The biggest reason I have such an issue with the camera angle is, we don't get to see the services and the receives; instead they tantalise with that very close-up shot right before the players actually serve the ball. I get that for non players that may not matter much, but many of us following the tournaments are players. It's really ridiculous to have to watch it this way. Whoever's reading this...

Reviewed again. I've studied and scrutinized serve techniques for a while (just curious, I'm not a pro). These guys are so good at disguising their serves even top players are often fooled. It's particularly hard for shake handers due to limited wrist motion. A good (or tricky rather) service is needed to set up for an instant kill. It takes years of practice to explore and perfect a serve and when to execute a lethal one for a CRUCIAL moment in a match. Ma Lin (Chinese pen holder) probably creates the greatest/fascinating TT serves of all time.

He did. There are many players inside/outside of China who defeated Ma Long before but to defeat Ma Long consistently is another story. To the best of my memory, Timo Boll, Wang Hao, Wang Liqin, Ma Lin, Xu Xin, Fan Zhendong, and Zhang Jike are the players who defeated Ma Long more than twice. Worth mentioning was a 16-year-old Wang Chuqin won against Ma Long and he also defeated Ma Long in their last meeting. But most of the players mentioned lost more than they won against Ma Long. Perhaps only Wang Hao and Zhang Jike possess a winning record against Ma Long because both of them had the privilege to play against a younger Ma Long.

16:30 I found it curious how lucky breaks from edges or net balls are apologized for; seems unique to table tennis. Any other sports, they're taken with aplomb.
Of course, the apology may be a feigned action, with internal glee 😉

Not true. Apologies for net shots occur also in tennis, as do mis-hits and Perfect corner shots(nicks) in squash. But I agree that it is now mostly an automatic feigned action with much internalised glee.

He was playing more like a blocker and clearly wasn't going anywhere. Without a lethal forehand and footwork in TT, you are not going to win against the best. But Harimoto's footwork moving to his left is not good enough even though he won many points from his forehand side. Harimoto is still young and can improve.

OH, man, THat was 5 months ago.
OH, man, 5 months later, currently HArimoto just beat LIn gao at europe Budapest to re-cap his champ.
I double review both matches between Harimoto vs FAN
    and Harimoto vs LIN gao.
conclusion, Lin likes to back hand block harimoto's attack, this way, LIN gao allows the opponent to attack again again and again, wheneven the opponent's attack is into a glitch, LIn gao counter attack immediately, LIN gao is #7 seed player and his combination skill is as good as anyone-else in the world, BUT,,,, BUT there is one----thing----which is in lots of important tournament's final, LIN is easily fall into a deflation trap, a low mood because LIN gao 's NATURAL anti--emotional immunization level is too low, that cause LIn gao lost many fights in some important tournaments.
FAN zhengdong is the best back hand attack player at this point that I rate. since he knows his backhand attack is lethal, then why not use it, he will not use backhand just blocking, he rather use backhand as attacking. playing this way with Harimoto, most likely FAN win the rally.
IF you are Harimoto, what do u think about---- FAN, and LIN ?
Fan's backhand attack is furious and lightning speed, I called it backhand lethal attack which is very panic for Harimoto,
But don't under estimate LIN gao's backhand blocking, even thought is not lethal shot but after 3 or more backhand block shots, harimoto's patience wear out and making return error, then Lin immediately counter attack and score point. , however, this will not put Harimoto into a panic situation. Harimoto will figure out a clue to beat you back.
FAN's thunder lightning back hand attack is formidable power which enable to beat harimoto's psychological defense barrier.

If a ball hits any top edge corner that is part of the playing surface so it's in - just like in tennis if the ball touches even a fraction of the line it is in.
Clipping a top edge often does not cause the ball to bounce upwards it may just slow or deflect it's downward fall. The ball it does not have to bounce upwards.
The balls downward motion was interrupted because it hit the top edge - if it only hit the side it would have just continued downwards.

Some four-five years ago, biased Western journalists (who normally covered political issues, not sports issues), keen on producing negative news and views on China on any subject, were suggesting that the era of China dominance in table tennis was coming to its end in the person of the young Japanese sensation Harimoto and that the latter would be Olympic Gold champion in Japan . Seems that they should have kept their mouth shut.

If Adam claims Harimoto screams to release nervous energy, then I expect he would be screaming after every point, won or lost. To me, it's a tactic or strategy to throw off the opponent, so I don't believe Harimoto is being entirely honest.

I've been saying that for years. It has always been and will always be a strategy. Celebration is understood. But screaming on top of your lungs for a trivial point? That just doesn't smell right.
Plus, Sun Wen already clarified in an interview that it is a strategy and that he'll also do it against Harimoto. And guess what? He won against Harimoto in Japan open using exactly that strategy.
Had it been just a way of releasing energy, Harimoto would win against the players that scream just like him. An Jae Hyun, Sun Wen, Mattias Falck etc. It seems to be too much of a coincidence that the players he loses to just happen to be screaming like him
