  • UPDATE: Propagating the stem cuttings turned out great and healthy. Propagating with the leaves DID NOT WORK, unfortunately. I knew it wasn't a very good chance for success - propagating simply by leaves is extremely difficult if not impossible for our Bear's Paw.
    How to propagate Bear's Paw from cuttings and leaves. However, leaves are very hard to propagate, so the success rate is not very good.

    I've only had one leaf actually root. It was a leaf that fell off on its own and I just set it aside in a mix and forgot about it. Unfortunately since I forgot about it entirely it died from me not watering it. I was actually really sad I forgot about it. I just assumed it was impossible. By the time I checked on it, it was a small stem branch with 2 shriveled leaves on it.

    Thanks for sharing. I just recently purchased two small Bears Paws and when it arrived, unfortunately some of the leaves, like 10 leaves came off during shipping. I knew it would probably propagate from a leaf. They have calloused over now so hopefully I’m lucky to get 10 new plants. 🤗🤗🤗wish me luck. I subscribed.

      I guess that mistake is pretty common, these guys are super fragile. Propagating from a leaf is super hard, but not impossible. I hope it works

      Oh no good shippers can keep leaves intact, I would not use that seller again. Leaf propagation appears to be pretty simple to me, but very slow

    Thank you so much
    It was really helpful for a beginner like me
    My big leaves are falling off, is it common or is it because Iam doing something wrong? Would love to hear your advice and suggestions

    • @battlefoxx
      @battlefoxx  Рік тому +2

      Biggest reason is TOO MUCH water, or too much direct sunshine. Usually too much water. Then they start to look like they are dying, so we add even more water to save it. So, I suggest let it dry out...then only water when the surface dirt around the stem is dry. If the dirt is pretty saturated, you can carefully dig it up and replant. Sorry about this, but good luck.

      True! I was watching this video because I recently got a little bear paw succulent from the grocery store, but it was VERY over watered and wasn't doing good (The soil was still soaked after TWO WEEKS!!). The succulent started losing some leaves after a while, so I decided to move it to a new pot. The main parts of the little dude are doing good. But by the time he was successfully moved, he lost about a dozen leaves. So I let them callus over and attempted to propagate them. Out of the dozen, two haven't been successful. But the remaining ten are still healthy! (For now😅) Two of which I propagated about a week earlier then the rest and they still look strong and healthy! So fingers crossed for the little guys 🤞

    I bought one about a year ago. It does grow out lots of new leaves and branches, but the leaves look really thin and droopy (leggy), really fragile, like insufficient sunlight or something. I put it on the south facing window, and have it under the grow light in the winter. I don’t know what have I done wrong, but I am desperately want my bear paw looks chubby like that. Many leaves dropped then I just left it in the pot, I don’t think those leaves are strong enough for rooting, cause I have watched them for awhile .

      @battlefoxx  Рік тому

      Hi, Bear;s Paws are super sensitive. Some thoughts. 1) Too much water and/or 2) too much sunshine can damage the leaves. If you are desperate (and brave), then a) unpot the plant and clean the roots of any wet soil, b) cut off rotten roots with a sharp, clean knife and c) repot in fresh, dry succulent soil. Be careful with handling the leaves because the will fall off pretty easily.

    Hello! :)
    So, I keep my bear's paws in a little pot because they are still quite small, and recently the pot fell onto the ground and broke the upper stalk slightly but not enough that i could rip it out. Do you think it could regrow again? ( sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm still new to that plant stuff, and sorry if my spelling is bad, english is not my first language😅 )

    • @battlefoxx
      @battlefoxx  2 роки тому +3

      I think it should be okay. It might just send out new side-"paws" to overcome the injury. Maybe put a toothpick up against the stem to keep it sturdy and maybe it will heal.

  • @sheelfjohnson

    I wonder if our house is not warm enough for our bear's paw? It's usually not much warmer than 70/75 in the winter. (We're in the Pacific Northwest) Our plant hasn't grown much and is tall and spindly :( I'm not even sure I have enough to take a cutting without killing it...
    Thanks for the video and any advice!

    • @battlefoxx
      @battlefoxx  2 роки тому +1

      Probably a couple of things you mentioned...it is really tough to grow. I think if the soil is too silty (not sandy) and no well drained....it may grow "too fast". Mine tend to do okay in hot weather, but it has to be in the shade. It is a really tough plant unless things are in perfect balance.

    • @battlefoxx
      @battlefoxx  Рік тому +4

      The stem cuttings worked out fine. It would've been better if I let them callous a little more before I planted them, though. The leaf cuttings did not work out. It is nearly impossible to propagate with the cuttings, but sometimes you get real lucky. Well, guess I can keep trying. Thanks for watching my video.

    May I ask what happens at the main plant where the stem was snipped? Does a new stem or leaf grow from there?

    • @jacquestan1564
      @jacquestan1564 3 місяці тому

      Two pairs of leaves will come out from the snipped main stem, as long as the mother plant is kept in right conditions.

    your bears paw cactus looks amazingly healthy! do you have any tips on encouraging them to grow as bushy as yours did? I have a 6 month old bears paw that seems to grow pretty well but grows a lot of small offshoots beside the main large leaves causing them to fall off. Any advice?

    • @battlefoxx
      @battlefoxx  2 роки тому +2

      Although mine are fine in the direct sun, they do best in a brightly lit shaded area...but, you need to make sure the soil is sandy and well-drained...otherwise it will grow "too fast' and you get the offshoots....or, you could even get some rot. Only water once per week (or even less, depending on your temp + humidity)....but, when you water, make sure you lightly drench the soil and let it drain out the bottom of your pot (no standing water)

    I have a cutting im currently trying to propagate and it just hasnt been putting out roots for weeks... but its still alive and green somehow.
    Also, i read that you shouldnt put them in the dirt because it'll cause them to rot.
    Hopefully you can help shed some light on this for me?

    • @battlefoxx
      @battlefoxx  Рік тому +1

      Propagating Bear's Paw is a lucky trial and error sort of thing. I have had them work just laying them down like some other succulent leaf, and with some short cuttings (cuttings are prepared with V cuts and shaving "bark")....but, still, always a crapshoot. Just use good, clean succulent/cactus type potting mix.

    Hi! How long does it take to root from cutting? I got a cutting a month ago and I haven’t seen any root growth on it. Is there anything I can do to encourage root growth?

    • @battlefoxx
      @battlefoxx  Рік тому

      It seems like it takes forever and the success rate is super, super low. With the leaves only, let then callus over, then put in the potting mix. With a stem which may (or may not) have attached leaves, also let them callus - but you don't need them to fully callus. But, still, success rate is really bad.

    Isn't the pot too big with the stem cutting? The plant is going to. Spend time and energy filling the roots up the pots. They have very shallow roots. It will take forever to get well established 😮
