When I purchased my new 2018 type R, the owner's manual did not have a specified break-in period. I contacted Honda corporate and they said 600 miles drive the car easy, don't brake hard, and after 600 mi drive it anyway you want. I'm up to 15,000 mi now and the car runs phenomenal.

  • @seanthompson8071

    1) New engines still require break-in ... so don't go a full interval before changing your oil and filter the first time. It's a good idea to cut your normal/recommended interval in half for the first change.

That's the first thing I do if I buy a car is check the no manual to see what the recommended octane rating it recommends so I get the best performance and milage. Tips for buying a car buy a Bluetooth OBII scanner and buy the torque pro app that way you can see if there's any issues with the car, take a tire tread depth gauge to make sure the tires are safe. Last thing you wanna do is have to buy new tires after buying a car. If they look low ask the dealership to install them. Lastly take the car to a mechanic you trust and get an inspection done same with Carfax.

@77MrAH Driving off immediately is fine, even good. Idling to warm the engine gives you a hot engine and a cold transmission/differential. Driving to warm the engine gets everything warmed up at a similar rate and therefore the temperature gauge is actually useful.
*However*, you should drive *gently*. Take it easy until the temp gauge has been in the operating range for a little while. How long depends on conditions: my old Civic is full-hot after a mile or so on a summer day, but on a winter night it can be as much as 20 miles.

Only reason I could think of spending more on a vehicle is crash test safety reasoning. Other than that, nothing more. Get a car that suits you and your family’s needs. There was a saying, "back in the day". You break em in fast, they run fast. You baby 'em, they last a bit longer but run a whole lot slower. Not saying we redlined 'em with ten miles on the engine but after a few hundred miles started twisting the engine to the redline loosened 'em up so they reached the redline quicker. Always worked for rebuilts and I never had blow by or oil consumption from improperly seated rings and bearings.

A good oil filter and new oil in the engine, is very CHEAP INSURANCE. I live in Quebec, Canada, where our winters are very hard on cars and trucks. Actually changing the oil and filter, probably right after buying the car, is still a good idea. This time however this is due to various debris and dirt left after production process, because somehow there's a chance that factory won't completely clean the parts before putting them together and quite frequently the factory oil will contain a lot of metal shavings. No kidding.
So while you don't have to break-in your new engine, you still have to ensure it's clean inside.

I still remember the old 1997 Toyota Corolla DX that we had as our only family car. Each day, upon first startup, it would sound like a forking tractor. After the short drive to school, it was nearly silent at idle. A warm engine is a lot happier than a cold one. Or an overheated one, for that matter. Just remember that. Let your engine warm up for at least a minimum of 1 minute, completely still, before heading off to work or school.

I just bought a 2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE in NJ(literally 7 miles on it when I started it). I live an hour away from the dealership where I bought it from. I followed by girlfriend home on the NJ Turnpike driving at normal speeds 65ish mph. When we transitioned to the Garden State Parkway I was following behind my girlfriend at about 70mph, but then I passed her and accelerated the car up to 90mph for about 1.5ish miles or so😵‍💫 The next night I turn on UA-cam on my cellphone for the first time since buying my new car, and this Scotty Kilmer video about "What not to do in a new car" popped up in my reccomend section. So I clicked on it and you say not to accelerate hard or drive a new car at high speed😐 Well my car new has about 90 miles on it now, and going forward I'm now continuously watching the tachometer to make sure I don't get the car above 3,500 RPM. This is my first brand new car and I didn't know that cars actually have a break in period, and absolutely no one at the Toyota dealership told me about a break in period or to keep the car below a certain MPH or RPM🤨 Hopefully my 1-2 miles of 90mph driving on the Garden State Parkway didn't negatively affect my new Corolla Hatchback XSE in the long run🙏 Scotty what are your thoughts on this?

Breaking in has been a controversial topic for decades. Baby it thru the 1970's. I had a very good mechanic tell me in the early 80's to drive the car like I would normally for the 1st 1K miles and don't beat on it. Then change the oil and filter. The new cars have new rules but basically use common sense and don't be jerk!
