EXPLORING A WWII EMERGENCY COASTAL BATTERY | PETT LEVEL

- It was the day after Candice's birthday and we headed along the East Sussex coast from our wild camp at Camber Sands to the small village of Pett Level to look at the World War II Emergency Coastal Battery on top of Toot Rock which overlooks the sea.
We found a lot more than we expected. It originally would of had TWO gun emplacements but sadly one was demolished to make way for a house nearby. The remaining emplacement, along with the Battery Observation Post tower, spigot mortar emplacement and other features, still remains and in fairly good condition.
I have painfully fond memories of this place, playing here as kids on a summer holiday in the mid 90s with my older brother (now sadly passed). He was a fantastic climber and somehow got to the upper floor of the tower through the hole in the ceiling. He rigged a rope ladder through the hole inside so the younger kids we befriended and I could get up to see. We’d run and explore all over that hillside with no parents until dusk. We all wrote our names in chalk in the bunkers and promised to stay in touch, which of course we never did. The pure adventure, danger, freedom and love that only an older brother can gift to their little brother. What I’d give to be taken back for one last hazy summer evening.
I've been up there a few times. It's a lovely walk up there and by the sea around Cliff End.
Thanks for this Tom & Candice. Have a Great weekend you two. Cheers.........Les
Interesting place and some nice shots 👌
Another very interesting video Tom .
Love the History . 👍
Nice to see Candice with you .
Nice explore :) The fools for destroying a part of it to build a house …. there's people out there who would pay more for the bunker than they would for the house !
Cool video. Here in the states we tear down everything nothing is persevered it sucks a tear down society you and Kent survival rock ✌✌✌✌
Brilliant place for a mooching there tom and probably a good place to metal detect you might find the odd goody still lying around buried for 70+years, , , great vid 👍👍
I know that spot well. The OP has only been secured recently by the local wildlife group because bats roost in there. Shame really because it was a great view from the top floor and I planned a camp up there at some point. Regards JB
Toot rock has always been a strong hold. Hundreds of years ago it was an island on the marsh.
thanks for the info mate, sounds so cool. and a wild camp up in the BOP would of been amazing! shame but you gotta look after bats.
Good vid it's like the one near Bawdsey.
