In his treatise The Republic, philosopher Plato lays out his ideas on justice, truth, and goodness through a series of dialogues with his own teacher, Socrates. Written in ancient Greece, the Republic delves into the philosophical nature of politics, justice, and government.
Emphasizing balance and harmony, Plato progresses through a series of scenarios ranging from the raising of children to the implementation of political systems. Among the most notable of the ideas in this work is the idea of the philosopher-king, a ruler who embodies truth and goodness.
By emphasizing that these values are applicable on all scales, he underscores their universality. Later philosophers have both critiqued The Republic and refined its precepts as foundations for their own visions of a just society.
Plato’s The Republic was first published in c. 380 BCE. Considered one of the most influential philosophers in history, Plato is known for formulating his theories through Socratic dialogue. Plato's writing has made dense philosophical ideas accessible to countless thinkers, students, and scholars.
The Republic contains many important ideas, including justice and government, as philosophers argue over the definition and advantages of justice and governance of the city-state; poetry, as poetry can be removed from reality and misleading to youths because it can describe an imitation of the ideal; and forms and ideas, as everything people experience through their senses could just be a copy of the real, ideal thing. Important symbols include the soul and cave.

Micheal Cole explaining how Plato was against poets
That was literally my first thought. Why is this dude yelling at me
Its called enthusiasm. Try learning something from someone who isnt enthusiastic about what theyre teaching. Its impossible to pay attention lol
This is why we don't do cocaine before doing our book reports

Great narrative, would be great to have subtitles as some terms are quite specific
100% agree
Definitely
Trust me guys, this is vastly preferable to my professor's monotoned, heavily accented, slow as hell approach to philosophy lectures
agreed 1000000%
No seriously! I don’t know why so many people are complaining
Good point
I think the focus should be towards the contents of the lectures instead of pronunciation or structure.
Very knowledgeable, just struggle with the presentation. Thank you non the less

Very intelligent and clear.
Thank you.
Nice presentation. It helped me a lot👍
Extremely engaging and enlightening. THANK YOU for the work that was put into this!

God bless this dude... he's helped me through Intro to Shakespeare, Literary History I, and now Understanding Theory and Criticism 😭🙏 I'll probably need him for Literary History II as well. Thank you so much for your help!!!
Thank you for your enthusiastic summary! It is much more impressionable than subtle explanations. I see you already have a ton of “appreciative” haters/critics. That’s definitely a sign of success.
Or it is a sign of not taking criticism constructively and being okay with the far fewer appreciators of this form of presentation. Imagine the success if this was legible for the majority of would-be listeners.
Dude would make an incredible voice actor
Did anyone else notice that he said Socrates allegory of the cave and not Platos? Is he correct and am I wrong? Or is that statement wrong? I'm confused because I was taught that it was platos allegory of the cave not Socrates. Can someone explain this?
BTW it starts at 6:40
socrates didnt write anything himself (that we know of)
I fw the enthusiasm philosophy is lit
The way he speaks, it’s almost like he wants to compete with Michael Buffer the ring announcer for boxing matches and for some Wrestlemania events.
I loved your energy in presenting
Incorrect titel. "Republic" wasn't the titel Plato called it. The titel was "politea" - in English the "state".
What is the meaning of "the return of a deposit of gold which is to the injury of the receiver is not the repayment of a debt" ?
Let’s put it this way:
Paying someone a million dollars after killing their only son wont make them forgive you. You still owe them the life and joy that was taken from them.
Or if someones car crashed into you and you became paralyzed, no amount of money will give you your mobility back
It means to return money that you borrowed from a friend is a good thing unless he is going to use that money for something that's bad for him (Like drugs or whatever).

I AM THE PRETENDER; HELLO ALIEN. HOW ARE YOU SOCRATES?
Why all the shouting? Lower the octave. Otherwise, a very good description and analysis.
The question is: is it coffee or is it coke?
3:58
Yeah.... it is definitely better just to read it for myself.
I can't with this guy lol.
Why is this a book by Plato but Socrates seems to be the main character?
Plato was a student of Socrates. Socrates did not write any works. Plato recorded down “dialogues” of Socrates such as Euthyphro, Meno, Apology, and Phaedo. It is questionable which ideas are Plato’s and which are Socrates’, but once you get to the Republic this work is certainly Plato’s own ideas. Aristotle makes reference to Plato’s theory of forms so clearly it is not something Socrates posited.
are u good
Reading Plato’s Republic now - it starts OK but DAMN it goes off on a wild tangent of absurdity

Stop shitting on this guy people, this guy is like the one and only holy savior of us high school/college students who didn't have time to do their assigned reading homework for English. Difficult to follow. Natural language is the best for learning. The visuals were too vague to add value to the storytelling. A lot of opportunity for details were missed with this presentation. I as a viewer would have liked to have been just as excited in learning this material but it came across as a commercial you want to tune out as its selling something you don't want. Visuals could have helped by keeping me focused as well as different voices reenacting the different characters positions and truly getting the main points from the books. Overall, I ddin't feel like I learned anything from this video.
I mean, if you wanted the details, listen to an audiobook, this is just a summary
POV: You are Greek and studying this in High School
If a speaker emphasizes everything then nothing is emphasized
Why the Greeks eyeless in Gaza?
heres the thing though ... if "The Republic" were correct and its teaching without flaw ... then why are we all still arguing about what "justice" is today?
shouldnt it be clear what justice is?
but yet .. there are 9 billion people in the world .. with 9 billion different ideas of what justice actually is ..
Nowhere close to 9 billion different ideas.
@@michaels4255 well we can clearly see that you are nowhere close to intelligent
Who says “The Republic” is right about everything?
We’re here to learn about what it says, not necessarily to agree with everything in it!
When we study philosophy, we read various works that contain various-and often conflicting-ideas. We can’t possibly believe all the things we read; and we’re not expected to.
@@terry9238 that's an interesting point from someone who's never read Plato's Republic...
The fact Plato's Republic has been around for damn near 3000 years and still hasn't been disproven is the proof is right about everything...
Idiot
@@michaels4255 you think there are vast groups of people with the same exact beliefs and ideas? No... Even in fanatical groups like the religious each and every person has slightly different view points than the next.
When 7 people look at the single moon in the sky. They all see a different moon. So is there only one moon? Or 7 different moons occupying the same space.
This is the entire reason why there are different versions of the same religion... All versions of Christianity started with catholicism, then along came Martin Luther with his protest document nailing it to the church door but then wait then you have Joseph Smith and his golden plates... Well gee what happened ... Are you telling me that in a group of people that are supposed to have the same ideas the same beliefs that not everyone had the same ideas or beliefs and had a different view point...
Well gee...
Same with politics.. not every republican agrees with every other republican and not all independents agree on every topic
Every person in existence has their own DNA, their own fingerprints, and their own viewpoints their own opinions and their own asshole...
So you are completely wrong.
The number of humans in existence is the number of different viewpoints of any given topic... And to be honest you're a complete idiot if you think otherwise... I mean what is your problem having your own opinion and your own viewpoint that differs from mine... You really are done kind of asshole proving me right when you claim I'm wrong...
Do you get that.. it's sarcasm... Because in your claim they in wrong you actually proved me right...
Im gambling my midterm grade lmao
Way to enthusiastic with your speech for me to understand anything you're saying, listening to this gave me a headache
Why is he talking about Socrates, isn't the book about Plato and his principles?
Socrates was the teacher of Plato.
Plato wrote Socrates’ dialogues, Aristotle wrote about his principals.
The Republic is the book of plato... why are you using "socrates" teacher of plato at many places???
THEREFORE STRANGER THINGS EXIST.
Just try and chill a bit man!
Nah. Let his passion spill all over.
