- We sail from The exumas to the Eluthera Islands in the Bahamas in our Sear 340 sundancer but we meet some trouble along the way. Our starboard engine won't make full power. It was a fuel related issue but we weren't sure what exactly thr problem was!

This was one of your better videos - because it shows what life aboard a boat can be on a bad day. Amanda is a treasure - her positivity and attitude is great. Now show us a day when Amanda is in a bad mood! (Does it ever happen???)
As someone who has been in this situation before, Bobby is sharing all the things that goes through your head as you work through a problem. Some people do it quietly and others are cussing out loud. I think Bobby handled it well and I commend him for sharing the realities that we go through. It is frustrating as hell when the boat just decides to be a boat when there is a destination goal, especially when safety is a concern.
Fair winds guys. 👍
Maybe because he flew Gulfstreams professionally? Good thing he stays calm and takes methodical and analytical approaches to problems. And he had much more time to deal with this problem on the water.
In the air, time isnt a luxury when some problems arise. Just listen to some air traffic emergency recordings. I'm sure he has some stories of intense moments and problems from that past life! Last week I listened to a pilot coming from oversees to NY in the fog and rain who had lost most navigation, couldn't find the runway, and was low on fuel. He had no time for cursing or panic! He diverted and made it to a nearby airport just before running out of fuel thankfully!
Her attitude was awesome 👏. So helpful and laidback ❤ love her!!
Love that you show the struggle, not just the high side. Good content as usual.
The boat was pissed ur drinking bud light 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That was probably what was in the fuel.
Hey Bobby, this might just be my favorite video of yours and Ive been watching since 2020. Very relateable as it reminds me of the day to day highs and lows I had with my 340 Sundancer. Also big fan of Cold Play so I was totally air drumming with a smile at the end! Nice job man.
I don't know why, but that was one of my favorite episodes. A nice calm start, adversity, overcoming adversity and then landing in a new marina with new experiences and the perfect soundtrack to back it all up. Good stuff!
Would you be happy to have him as a pilot of an aircraft, if this is his reaction to a small problem like this in a twin engined boat?
Bobby did not overreact. He came to the right conclusion and executed the resolution perfectly 🤷
Yeah, the soundtrack makes a huge difference, for me the extra cash is worth it!
Love your channel Bobby! You’ve inspired us! Thank you for all your hard work!
I appreciate that!
Looking good bobby.
My first thought was fuel supply. The marina you got fuel at could have had trash in the fuel and it got pulled into your supply lines. What you did to correct is really all you can do short of removing and blowing them out. It usually works it way through. Love your channel been following it fir a couple years now. Thanks for doing this and sharing your experiences.
I am wondering about the quality of the fuel from these marinas. Do they have filters on the pumps and are they serviced regularly ? I would ask before fueling, myself...
@@mikehatch2114 probably not serviced regularly considering the marina for the first fill up was basically falling apart due to lack of maintenance
A perfect boating couple !!👍😎
@@mikehatch2114 If it had been water i would have suspected the marina, But he didn't find any water, and from what Bobby was saying both docks he used seemed busy. Generally if the fuel station is moving product that keeps the sediment issues to a minimum. I honestly think its more likely it was junk in his own tanks. The boat sat for close to a month so anything that was in the tank had a chance to settle, and then would be right there to get picked up when he started moving.
I don't have a boat, but if I did,I would somehow filter the fuel before I put it in my boat..
U can filter water as you fill tanks
Add seafoam to every tank. Amazing stuff
Totally agree! SeaFoam is great stuff for all engines large or small.
I prefer Racor filters with a bowl and drain in bottom....takes the guesswork out of water in fuel.
Ask me how I learned.......
Awesome vids Bobby, thanks for your efforts.
Racor is the way to go.
At least you can see if it’s the fuel and move on troubleshooting if it’s not.
Keep pushing forward and never give up. You are living my dream!!!
I've been right their with you on this fuel situation Bobby. Two different SeaRays with the same powerplants that yours has. The first one was a 370 Aftcabin that had staling issues on one engine. The other was a 400 Express and it had vapor lock issues till i realized the cause of it was ethanol in the gas. We had both of these boats on Texoma. The marinas finally quit selling ethanol gas and I never had the problem again. Both of these boats had the fuel injected 454's.
Oh ya that is a good point about the ethonal gas. That's the joy of cruise life though... You get what you get...
Thank you for Fix you from Coldplay. SOOOO long since I've listened to that and have always loved it. Adding to playlist now :) ...
From a marine mechanic to someone who life depends on boats. The pockups in the fuel tank likely have a spring loaded check valve called an anti siphon valve. The valve or possibly screens in the fuel pickups are the second checks if no water in the fuel filters. If you have enough room there are filter assemblies that have drain cocks for checking fuel. Sierra makes them or switch to rancor filter brackets.
In this episode you could cut the "stress" tension with a knife. Bobby can't hide it and Amanda seemed like she wanted to crawl and hide somewhere. Boats are a lot of work.
He's always had a problem controlling his emotions when he gets in a little stressful time
It’s understandable to be concerned when you’ve a crew mate to also look out for
Did well both of you 🏴🌈🌸🙏😎
You can't hoist the sails on a powerboat..
Great video showing that on a beautiful day with a set plan things are great....until they aren't. I don't think you were emotional...simply assessing the situation and of course stressed to find the answer quickly given the upcoming bad weather and limited harbor options. Boats and aircraft suffer when not exercised regularly and gremlins show up often when returned to service. I am a sailor but have a good friend with the same vintage SR 340 and it is a PITA to go forward with the narrow side deck and the acrobatics to get back in from the side. I never go forward without an inflatable on me while underway. Hope Amanda has had MOB training...it did look rough but the dink had to be secured. One of your best recent videos. All the best!
Man it's been a while since I heard a song from the Deftones! Very good video and editing Captain Bobby!
I’m thinking the same as Captainkirk. I work as a petroleum service tech at gas stations and marinas. Even with fuel filters on the diesel and gas dispensers you can get contaminated fuel from the marina’s fuel dock. Especially if they were pumping while getting a fuel delivery with low inventory in the tanks which stirs up the sediment. Water in the diesel is also a real issue. Low sulfur diesel has a lot more issues with algae growing in it as well. If water gets trapped in the dispensers fuel filter it will rust and can have brown algae grow in the filter. Rust or Algea then is past the filtration and gets in your tank causing blockages. I’m not sure how often they change the marina fuel filters in the Bahamas or if they use the hydrosorb filters as they should.
At least you’re stranded with Amanda you lucky dog!!
That was a "trip" but glad that you made it! And the Coldplay at the end....WOW Great Job!
You need a full time marine mechanic with you at all times!!! Safe travels. Amanda is the new star of the show!!!! 😎🇺🇸
This is one of the things I admire about Bobby in all of his sailing career...he has the right kind of analytical mind and technical knowledge to solve most problems while underway. A lot of other boaters would be screwed in the same situation and while they may have been able to anchor they would have been in big trouble when the bad weather arrives the next day. One thing I am surprised about it that Bobby has not purchased an auxiliary generator as a backup for the main generator. It could come in handy to meet basic needs until the main generator can be fixed.
Had a similar problem with my much smaller boat and it was a in land lake. Still frustrating. Happy you are in a safe place.
Had dirty fuel injectors do that to me on our sea ray.
Really enjoying your channel! The highs and lows are all every boater is faced with and glad you are showing both sides. Can’t wait to go back to the Bahamas with our family.
Had a 2001 Sundancer 290. Nice boat but had a ton of engine issues. Impeller issues caused the port engine to blow twice in 12 months. Decided boating was not for me.
Good time to have firsts in an area where you have been many times.... when you are with Amanda. That is actually special. Stay safe!!!
Well done Captain, and Mate. Thanks for sharing.
I was impressed as I watched you and Amanda deal with this emergency that could have become life threatening. Bobby just dove into troubleshooting and worked the problem. Amanda just dealt with it using grace and dignity. Well done both of you, to not build the stress any more than was necessary. Impressive, really.
Awesome vid, you guys had some problems with the boat and worked through them, I had problems at work and did the same. Love you guys, love your channel, and just wanted you all to know of the really positive effect that your vids have on alot of us. I'm gonna get on the flotilla with my wife one day and meet y'all. Thanks for doing what you do, cheers 🍻
I'm watching your great video from Newfoundland Canada, with a snow storm raging outside.
I could not deal with snow and cold weather like many do, so depressing also.
When you first started adding music I didn't really like it, you have nailed it now and it really adds to the videos, great job Bobby, this was a great episode
Bobby, problem is in one engine and not both so the problem is between the last shared item like the fuel filter and the problem engine. If it went away once the engine was hot, it probably a leak on the engine like a fitting that is letting air in or if the engine has a carburetor and the boat was sitting, the float stuck like the generator. Run fuel treatments if the boat is going to sit. Oh by the way fuel filters are not moisture separators unless they have them so moisture can go through.
Beautiful...glad the fuel issue sorted itself out...
Bon Voyage.
Amanda is a splendid mate and partner. She stays calm when mechanical issues come up. Bob you know how to pick a partner.
Lots of good comments on this show. I enjoyed it also. But, What I want to know is this, why is it always the starboard engine? I can't keep raw water/fuel pumps working more than 3 years. Changing to low pressure electric fuel pumps and blanking off raw water pumps.
That was also the day I bumped into you at the fuel dock, your just as nice in person my man
That water is beautiful Amanda I wish I could see more of you well you know what I mean but anyways you guys wonderful videos I am subscribed and I'll keep watching Bobby be cool Amanda stay adorable❤
Anytime you have engine issues immediately following a fill up the best place to start eliminating causes would be fuel filters. Bigger issue is all that water they sold you.
Had same issue on my SeaRay 310. Changed fuel filters added MDR Ethanol Gasoline E-Zorb Water Remover, did the trick!
Excellent Music choice for this episode. Great Job.
Glad you are safe!
No telling what quality fuel you are getting in those marinas! Hope you have lots of filters!! Might even want to invest in a filter to clean the fuel before it goes in the tanks. Surely someone makes something like that, short of using paint filters! ;)
Also good to see ya'll handle stress without snapping at each other! Sign of a good relationship. ;)
Love this. Axiom - Boat Stuff happens and you have to fix or go alternate. This kind of experience makes you Captain or a fine First Mate. Hardship and Sucess. Cheers!
Hi Bob I was surprised that where you docked at you have never been . Glad that you fixed the problem with the fuel . Amanda is beautiful
Great video. Suspense followed be huge relief and enjoy life. It’s the journey.
Smartest guy I know. He uses her for his thumbnails so he knows people WILL click. Good strategy.
You must be new to this channel? that's the thumbnail for every video since the beginning of time!
Love that song. perfect match!
I agree. All the work is worth it in the end.
I agree with others, great episode. Dealing with adversity (I am sure there were more bleeps off camera), winning teamwork and achieving safe harbour. Plus I am a Coldplay fan! Great soundtrack. Beers en route!
Common problems with storage for longer periods
Shit settles to bottom of tank then stirs up when running
Don't think it was water in fuel unless you have separate fuel tanks
With the distance you travel perhaps tank cleaning would be wise
Just saying
Great videos Bobby on all your channels from an old Canadian RVR and sea dog (power only)
that's what I was thinking bumpa, squirt some injector cleaner in the tanks and replace the fuel pumps they can play up then run fine then stop 👍.
Great editing on this vid Bobby. Loved the last few mins with Coldplay 😊
That boat makes an impressive wake when you get up to cruising speed !
I have a rule not to get fuel where a supply truck is dropping…it stirs the tanks. They may have dropped fuel before you got there…just a thought
Glad yaw made it safe. God bless
Great job, Skipper. Sometimes throttle is the only answer to your problem.
Go to Harbour Island off North Eluthera - beautiful small island
Great episode and enjoyed Coldplay!!
What are the qualifications needed to be one of Amanda's microphones ? Askin' for a friend. 🤣🤣
Not sure how low your fuel tanks were when you filled up but guessing you clogged the fuel line with sediment. After attempting to blow it out a few times, you finally cleared it out. Glad it worked out for you Bobby.
It’s funny but I agree with your closing statement. I used to be an over the road truck driver and sometimes the most challenging days are the most rewarding.
It's vaper locking!! Fuel needs to vent ! Let the engine cool all the way down changing the filter will let some air hot but the air and fuel is too hot. Get a relief valve put in before the engine and fuel tank!
Good job, Bobby. I'm gaining a lot of respect for you. You've proved it.
Sounds like 2 issues. Boat has been sitting idle for a while causing sediment at the sump inlet. The reason Bobby had garbage in the fuel filter.
Second issue is a high run of boats at fuel pier. Turbidity in there supply tank plus disruption in the sediment on the boat tank(s).
If you have a supply fuel hose, I'd suggest a clear, double barbed in line fuel filter. At least you can visually monitor what junk is trying to get through and not break the integrity of removing the can filer.
Clear filters run $8-10 at any automotive website.
I would guess it may be either accumulated condensation in the fuel system from prolonged lack of use, or a temperature sensor issue. Both could have self-resolved after running the engine for an hour or so.
As always, safe travels!
Love the Searay really bummed your getting rid of it. Love the videos
Awesome vedio guys thanks for sharing
Love the music last few ! Coldplay!
Hey Bobby, sorry to hear you got bad fuel. Sometimes pumping a lot of fuel move debris around.
This! Fantastic episode. Great editing. The reality of boating, risk, challenges, reward, and a good woman by your side. ❤
This why you need to filter the fuel while fulling up! Glad it cleared it's self
lol my throttles are the same on my 34 1 is always a lil up and when u hit a wave u have to adjust lol .. I need to tighten up
It's really hard on boats leaving them sitting in the water, especially in salt water.. Should check out In-out service.. Have them fork it out and sit it on a rack, out of the water....🤷♂ They can easily do a boat that size. And it's easy to work on for standard maintenance.. 👍
Great vid! Sorry for the trouble and stress but this was kind of old school Doodles.
The reality of boat life! Loved it! Hello from Nelson New Zealand.
Great job Bobby -weird how sometimes ya just gotta put it in gear and GO - you lucked out when the problem cleared itself! You
She's getting better being on camera 😊
Love Coldplay's music.....100% on point congrats on that Bobby!!!!
I had a Sea Ray too Bobby, Used to call it " that Dammed Sea Ray ! !
Long time viewer here, and still loving the content. I don’t miss an episode. 😎
Might be the most stressed I have seen you Bobby….beautiful thing about 2 motors…you were never in risk of being “stranded”…one of the reasons I tend to favor catamarans…much like airplanes…I love redundancy especially when at the mercy of Mother Nature 😊
Don’t leave fuel tanks low or near empty, that’s a recipe for water condensation and resulting injector problems.
Watching the video, could be a filter blocking.
You look like Han Solo climbing around the engine trying to fix the hyperdrive.
“Alluvial dampers. Ow. That's not it, bring me the Hydrospanner. I don't know how we're going to get out of this one.”
Love the Bahamas but even flying there we always tried to land with enough fuel to return to the US. We always worried about quality of fuel.
Happy all ended well. Cheers to da crew. 🍻😎
I'd guess about 15 gph @ cruise. 7.5 per on a common 5 micron filter. The stronger pump wins. Bad fuel tanks act up in rough weather. This could be related to the fuel stop or maybe it was just due. A vacuum gauge would tell the story. Twin selectable tanks with isolation valves water separation and dual filters would be the go-to set-up. good crossing the gulf stream/island hopping boat. It needs the cruising speed and is made to run not stroll.
Maybe early signs of fuel separation, since boat had not been run for a couple of months. When you filled up it stirred the crud up.
Fuel pumps on the engine are not crazy expensive but I bet they are not the easiest to switch out in that engine bay!
Nice job working the problem and managing thru! I’m sure it’s been addressed in one of your vids along the way but in round numbers what would you say is a “typical” monthly or weekly spend for your version of cruising the Bahamas/BVI?
Always boat problems...may have been bad fuel...time to have the fuel system checked and clean all the fuel then replace all the fuel filters...
I get it Bobby. Fix You!
Such a beautiful song.
The first 5-8 minutes of this video, you exhibit the "gotta interrupt the music every three seconds" mentality. But the last half you finally quit doing that and finally the video was very pleasant to watch. Maybe twitchy fuel regulates the smoothness of the video? The music at the beginning was quite nice. Too bad it was under editing attack!
You need a Rycor water separate filter
Sounds like maybe some air in the fuel system. If the boat sat for a long time, could have been a slight blockage or air.
It could be the anti siphon valve in the pick up, a common problem. I believe they are mandatory in inboards in the USA. I'm in Australia and with US boat imports we will remove them with outboards fitted as not necessary.
Loving “Coldplay” Stay Safe!
Thanks for the video. I believe Cape Eleuthera marina is owned by the DeVos family of Amway fame. They bought it as part of a massive failed real estate development in Eleuthera they acquired.
Bet yall cant wait for the new boat!
Looked like Bobby was saying a prayer when he fired up the engine.
That was a great video with great content and some great choices for music.
coolant blockage can limit rpms, Not always fuel related.
