This is the most optimistic episode in a while. The idea that the internet, or at least social media, will implode on itself sparks joy
I left the dumpster fire that was and is Twitter a whole decade ago, hearing about it now is like hearing a news story about how 10,000 people gathered together in an abandoned Walmart parking lot to all compete over a crisp $20 bill (which looks perfect at a glance, but upon inspection reveals a serial number that is half nonsense characters), all while the parking lot is surrounded by 100,000 robots with bullhorns actively trying to distract or misinform their efforts.
That's a pretty solid prompt. I didn't even need Midjourney to imagine that with my flesh brain!
The dead internet is terrifyingly sad. One of humanities possibly best resources absolutely ruined in the names of capitalism and clout.

The internet has been slowly dying thanks to sites like Facebook. It was so much better when people mainly communicated on forums or small chatrooms where you could have conversations with like-minded people. Of course that meant that there were also places where groups like right-wing conspiracy theorists could congregate without fear of being shut down, but they're still able do that, except now they can reach more people and more easily grift people.
Capitalism isn't scamming. It's providing value. This is something completely different. It's like, commies think there's no scamming in free money.

Almost every single thing that goes against religious views is far better at finding and correcting many dubious things.

tbf, despite being a goddamn mess of a website, tumblr really has been the most usable, interesting, funny and personable social media platform for about a decade now, and is easily the most resistant to capital trying to turn it into a yet another pile of advertising-based hateful sludge. hell, last time I used it, I actually wanted to see the ads, because they were all just deranged nonsense. a picture of a CGI horse with the text "did you take your meds yesterday?" type shit

Twitter wasn't handling bots super well before musk bought it. And while it is worse now, it isn't much worse in reality. Not after accounting for general growth you'd see over time and the tech and ai advancing making it easier. It is worse, just not much. But what makes it so funny is how Elon claimed him buying it would fix the problem. And he hasn't at all. Same for csam on the site, and "censorship/free speech". Though those last ones have gotten worse. By a lot. There is far more csam, and Elon stops a lot of speech he doesn't like in just so many ways.

It's not even you can't believe 'everything.' It's that you can't believe ANYTHING unless you do your due diligence. It's like an infinite library with published books, but 99% of them are scammers, frauds, and capitalist pig dogs.

Now that you mention it, I have noticed Google search is often pretty garbage. It's nonsense to be able to get a California Realtors Association when someone searches "car". Literally only 0.00000000000001% of people will be looking for that organization.
I recently set up my fathers new computer and immediately install ublock, but before I did I noticed a lot a sponsored and ads at the top of the search. After i install ublock, none of the searches were ads anymore.

This videos comes amazingly right on the heels of me making the decision to make a more conscious effort to avoid interacting with AI-produced and/or fake-outrage content. I already knew that it was all over the internet, but once I really started questioning “Is this real?” and “Was this made by a person rather than algorithm?”, it’s really astounding how often the answer is “probably not.”
I hadn't made it as far as you until now. Once again, like with the wild hogs, Cody has shown me the real darkness of the world. :D

Probably an American thing? I just googled car and the first result was a dictionary translating the word car into German. Then German Wikipedia defining CAR (not vehicle related) and after pictures of cars, the English Wikipedia article for car (vehicle). Maybe some EU laws?
@@1IGGnot just american, Google services have priority and in some places there are less ads sold, but I'm not American and most of my google experience is google showing me things to buy and places to go first or 6 links of ads (it's worse on pc than on mobile) , ignoring my preference in language when i do the search, mistaken my native portuguese for spanish even though it is set for portuguese results and actually not given me results with the information I need to because it doesn't understand what I want, it's easier to search reddit by now.
@@1IGGAlso, maybe try looking for something in your onw language if I write car there is no ads in my case because it's part of a governamental acronym but if I write "carro" which is the portuguese translation, the first thing I see is 5 ads to buy cars.

I know a bunch of twitter artists. Most of them censor the word "commission" in all of their posts because any reference to commission work summons a bunch of bots that seem to think they're looking *for* commissions.
Then there is the fun scam of discord "artists" trying to get you to PayPal them money and showing you other people's/AI work
yep i have to do this. i either use "cm" or "c0mm" but somehow theyve still managed to find some of my posts & comment on them. i also get a ton of bots following me daily & its annoying af having to go to my followers list & block them all. bluesky is just so much better & as soon as my follower count is higher there im leaving twitter
There was one I noticed a few months ago (I don't remember what the key word was) where I'd always see bots advertising a t-shirt of the art being talked about, like the bots were creating the stolen work t-shirt links/mock ups

Recently my wife has become the target of a Facebook harassment campaign where countless accounts tag her in explicit contact, trying to get her to click a link that will steal financial information. This has been happening for months to many people, and Facebook is seemingly unwilling to do anything about this
My bands Facebook page has been getting hammered by accounts poorly pretending to be meta support. Every single report has ended with Facebook saying "this content doesn't violate our policy"
I can't believe people still use Facebook.

Kat Blaque recently posted a video reflecting on her experience being hacked thru a scam via FB (look for her YT video where she's scammed by Taylor Swift's BF) & she brought up a version of Dead Internet Theory towards the conclusion that I found so upsetting. My first impulse was to reject it as being "too conspiracy" but her explanation really dug deep into my brain & haunted me & more + more, I think it's not as extreme a theory I thought. It's so unsettling.
"I'm too cool to eat toilets!" is a phrase I didn't know I needed in my life.
"AI to help users write" is about recognizing that AI writing isn't up to human standards and responding by moving the goalposts so that human writing is to be judged by how closely it conforms to AI writing patterns.
I don't use those programs but I swear new updates online & on my native devices have made auto-correct ultra-aggressive & I h8 it so much. I deliberately write in a mix of high-low linguistic signifiers & indulge in wordplay + idea-play & the number of times I post just to see something "auto-corrected" AFTER I FIXED IT 3x PRIOR TO POSTING is maddening. I spend more time these days correcting my posts from unwanted intervention by the AI so I can say what I want to the way I want to say it, than I actually spend writing. It's infuriating they don't let you just disable this shit. I can check my own spelling, thanks. I don't need to go back over every piece of slang or proper noun 3x reverting what an algorithm decides I should be saying. Holy f-ck it's so annoying. It's upsetting it'll get worse.

I always want to go live on a small farm somewhere after episodes like this, no electricity or phones. Prepping for half a year of lean times seems so more rewarding than the modern world sometimes.

i feel that augh. but why call it laziness? it's not like we grew up within an environment that taught us about those things. capitalism wants (forces) us to rely on its current socioec. systems, and a lot of those "less connected" methods of living are considered obsolete within the logic of capitalism bc they don't rly fit into the way our society works currently -- so it's not exactly the easiest/most accessible subject to learn about.
not to say it can't be done though! as an example lately I've been taking earth science field courses at a community college that involve some camping, which has been a nice way to experience being outside and learning the names of the features around me and relying on limited resources/collaboration. I hope you find ways to unplug and people to help you with it ! I think it's a pretty sweet goal to have, even if we're likely to move towards it slowly

Yeah unfortunately that's fighting a losing battle. I've blocked thousands on facebook and still see bots. When your enemy is infinite in number, no amount of singular things you can do will stop them.

When I searched Car I got 8 different "local" news stories from another country, several random suggestions for car facts (fastest car, bestest car, are teslas safe, etc.) the Wikipedia article for cars, then endless Autotrader links.

At the debut, I believe that they used a shotput.mmFor the release, the demonstration was repeated but with a softball sized soft ball. Great video as always. I will say even if regulation improved I think a class on spotting scams is actually really smart for a curriculum. I worked security at a target in the Midwest and one of my jobs was politely talking people out of being scammed into buying itunes cards/google play cards "to settle debt with the IRS" or other bogus nonsense, sometimes over a thousand dollars.
honestly agreed, I had to do a course on it for work and, though I consider myself relatively aware of scams, there were some points that were wake-up calls to me. I like Cody's anger about how we just teach kids how to deal with structural garbage instead of fixing it, but that knowledge is still powerful and useful (and can enable us to be safer and more angry at how vigilant we have to be at all times)

Bots and scams should be dealt with more seriously. Literally in the last week some bot created a fake facebook pretending to be running the funeral of a friend who died and scammed a bunch of old people for their credit card info.
That's...that's appalling. It's infuriating the big tech companies just don't care about this stuff bc they get paid by scammers.

- Quora (anyone can answer, anyone can Vote) is a remarkably unreliable source yet is listed high in a search.
- Comments have a habit of disappearing or being visible to just the poster but not the comments with just "LOL" and similar "content".
- Speaking of comments, many people make them without first fact checking. Those comments ALSO stay.
- Those 4 examples don't even mark the surface of the overall problems that run deep.
...a better depiction may be; Capitalism on the Internet has yet more tools at its disposal to outgrow competition. While Content has become "the responsibility of the people" the major gatekeepers can literally bend the light in their favor, distorting what people believe.
