I think the Philippines don’t really need expensive submarines. Unless people want to dive under the ocean to explore wildlife. They need more Ferry ships to transport people from island to island. They can welcome tourists too which can bring them extra money to stimulate their economy. It will be fun to play Pokémon Go in the Philippines while you hop around to different islands.
The country's navy has 7,000 islands to protect. It may need at least half a dozen submarines as a start as a deterrent and to protect its territory but, it definitely needs more than that to rotate units and to have a ready reserve when required. It probably needs missile defense capability like an inbound-missile alert and tracking system, and a system similar to the Iron Dome missile-interception system throughout the archipelago. Maybe it needs to step up in drone warfare capabilities. Ukraine developed an effective asymmetrical approach to dealing with a more powerfully equipped army like Russia by using drones extensively on land, air, and sea.
Depends on how much the politicians try to steal from the military modernization funds.

For those that say that Philippines' doesn't have budget... The senators and congressmen pork barrel alone is more than enough money to actually buy more than a dozen submarines. The problem is that the traditional politicians in the Philippines still doesn't want to let go of greed even amidst an actual Communist Chinese invasion. Normally, a blockade is considered a declaration of war but everyone wants to downplay the invasion because doing so would mean reallocating funds that normally goes to politician's pockets into the much needed defense force.
P.s. Communist china recently increased their military budget to 7.2% despite facing economic crisis. This in itself is an indication that they are preparing for war. They also changed their statement regarding Taiwan and removed the wording "Peaceful Reunification". Therefore there is high probability that there will be war in either Taiwan or the Philippines' EEZ. Why the Philippine officials have the luxury to "delay" defense spending is quite astonishing. Then again, the first ones who will flee the country once the war starts are the same politicians that kept the country defenseless.
Buy a dozen yes but they can't heavily depend on submarines alone. They need to pour some more money for the weapons and maintenance of the subs.

@@irfanshafri9574Indeed. Everything in the AFP needs to be upgraded. From Army to Airforce to Navy. The politicians has neglected the armed forces severely that it's going to be very difficult (although not impossible) to catch up. What's frustrating is that the funding is inconsistent even when there's already an emergency.
It's one thing to "buy" weapons BUT how long would it take to re calibrate and retrain the soldiers in being able to competently use them. The AFP needs consistent funding if the Philippines wants their AFP to be able to do their job properly. The irony is that there's money in the coffers but the legislative body doesn't want to release it.

I vote to acquire the Scorpene or Navantia submarine. It should include training as well as maintenance and transfer of technology.

The Indo sub that sank last time was donated to them as far as I know. But yeah maintenance is very expensive too.
Nanggala Class Submarine is an Indonesian attack submarine. According to Wikipedia, the submarine was ordered from Germany and began operating with the Indonesian Navy in 1981 and sank in 2021. In my opinion, the age factor was the main cause of the ship encountering many problems and finally sinking.

One way to circumvent the Chinese ire is by purchasing the necessary subs from the members of the ASEAN. The deal will be sugarcoated as a strengthening of bilateral relationship between the members of the bloc. Though, the downside is that the subs may not be as advance as the ones offered by the western powers. That doesn't mean the subs are below average, it's just not to the level of the western powers. This might just be the middle path.

Submarines are an offensive weapon. I also don't see a need for it.
Submarines are a deterrent as a defensive weapon max. You can shoot trespassing ships like what Germany did during WWI. But we cannot do that, can we?
However, this is just my inexperienced opinion. The AFP has said that itbis in their wishlist despite being a defensive armed force. Thus, there might be a defensive purpose for submarines from a military point of view.
I guess people of Philipines need food, shelter and opportunity to access good education more than this submarine, as you can check how many Filipinos are working abroad now as maids for very little money to sustain a living.

The Coast Guard has "Ships" but they don't do coastal defense, instead they stay in a port and await orders. While staying in the port they will check "Ferries" for Counting on how many passengers they are on the "ferry"

There are so many problems in the Philippines that need developments and budgets. Pag-asa island needs at least 2.5 billion pesos for developments. BRP Sierra Madre also needs resupply mission and repairs, possible multirole F-16 procurement, missile defense systems like Brahmos missile, additional fast attack helicopters and etc. Horizon 1, 2, & 3 cost billions of dollars so the Philippines consider the limitations of budgets, you know!
In reality the Philippine government has a limited budget for armed forces and military modernization programs.
Amphibious Assault Ship is much more needed by the Philippine Navy than a Submarine, because submarines were so expensive. And the Amphibious Assault Ship can carry light amphibious tanks & light attack helicopters that are necessary to defend the 7,000+ island in the Philippine Archipelago!

The Amphibious Assault Ship can act like a small Aircraft Carrier, instead of just troops & personnel., it could carry Weapons and Tanks., helicopters can also land there. Submarine cannot carry these things, submarines are only good at special missions & reconnaissance. The stealth nuclear powered submarines are advanced & good military assets but much more very expensive compared to ordinary submarines. If someday, the Philippines becomes a rich country., anytime they can buy like Canada & Australia did! 😅

The Philippines doesn't have a choice but to shape up and change it's mindset to having offensive and defensive military and capability build up to eventually put china in its place. It must be destined to play proactive role in the region due to its strategic role in the region.

Regardless of the Numbers, Naval Vessels, Subs and long range armaments should have been acquired long b4 the departure of the U.S. Bases. Knowing that Phil is Archipelagic Country, Needless to say these Arms are Vital to defend its Complicated Sovereignty.

I'm really into learning our country's military strength and our military assets to see how we would fare if our country needed to defend ourselves. And for that, I came to this conclusion:
Philippines needs submarines for defense. It doesn't need to be a blue water submarine nor any expensive one. Just one that would be adequate for the defense of Philippine islands. We do not intend to wage war after all but given the threat of hundred-kilometer range missiles of potential hostile actors, we ought to have something to sneak below and send a devastating blow to any naval ships that may threaten the lives of the mainland.
As for the question of Philippines acquiring a submarine, I doubt that it will happen within this decade for some reasons. I may be wrong here, but I believe that our country will only be able to purchase and maintain it properly after 2 decades or so since today.
Itll take over 5 years for one sub to be made and delivered so youre almost right, in your estimated time...although the threat is so imminent, so many new players have been showing up for support of the PH that theyre offering donations/letting PH borrow their military hardware and pumping up the economy for better defense, and fast.
Also in another video, i saw the dept of defense mentioning theyve already been training personnel since i think around 2016 (or even earlier) for the future acquisition of subs. Thats probably most telling about the philippines stance when it comes to this topic.

I've seen a lot of Filipinos wants their country to reciprocate its visa policy where citizens of countries that do not allow Filipinos to enter without a visa should not have the privilege to enter the Philippines visa-free.
Many Filipinos finds it unfair that these countries can easily enter the Philippines without a visa, while Filipinos need to obtain one and often struggling, which makes them feel discriminated against.
Currently, citizens of over 157 countries can enjoy visa-free entry into the Philippines, while Filipinos have only 69 visa-free access destinations. This made the people frustrated, saying if the Philippines offered visa-free entry to most of the countries and welcomed them with an open arms, but these countries do not give the same privilege to Filipinos and give them a hard time to enter their country.
Due to this, they want to scrap visa-free entry to them as a return, except to other countries that allowed Filipinos to enter without a visa. This will ensure a reciprocal visa policy and fairness between the Philippines and other nations.

Philippine should get this - US will retire Nuclear Submarines
The US Navy plans to retire its 40-year old Ohio-class nuclear-powered guided missile submarines (SSGN) in two years, with all four ships being divested in four years.
The US Navy is scheduled to lose all four of its Ohio-class SSGN in the coming years. The move to finally retire the four guided missile submarines has been long anticipated, but it is now only two years away according to the Navy’s recently issued 30-year shipbuilding plan.
The first two boats - USS Ohio (SSGN-726) and USS Florida (SSGN-728) - are scheduled to join 17 other ships planned for retirement in 2026. With the Navy retiring the remaining ships, USS Michigan (SSGN-727) and USS Georgia (SSGN-729), in 2028.
These four submarines are the oldest of the Navy’s Ohio-class submarines, all of them pushing more than 40 years of service.
Following the 1994 Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), the number of SSBN in US inventory was downsized from 18 boats to 14. The four retired vessels would be converted into guided missile submarines. This process lasted from 2002 to 2007, with the last boat, USS Georgia (SSGN 729) completing her conversion in December 2007.
The conversion process for these boats traded 24 missile tubes that held Trident Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBM) for 22 missile tubes holding seven Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles (TLAM) each, for a total of 154 missiles.
