    I served onboard the carrier USS America when Tomcats were in service. I like how they always sounded like they were angry at the sky. Sounds like it’s ripping the air apart. Love and miss these aircraft immensely

      If you read up its history or see interviews of the pilots who flew it, it was one of the deadliest as well. No one wanted to engage in a fight with an F-14 during the cold war and the Gulf war.

      You should have seen them when they the cloud level forced them to do the show at low altitude.
      They did that along the length of the runway at near treetop level.
      When the F-14 passed show center all you could see was the from the cockpit behind the RIO forward, the entire plane from the engine intake back was hidden by the moisture generated by the shockwave.

    Growing up in South Oxnard just a few miles from the Runway there at Mugu meant many airshow trips including during the "Space Fair" days of the 60's. I remember how the F-14 was Top Dog when they became operational along with all the other amazing craft we used to strain our eyes to watch them make their passes. Sadly, my last show was the one where an F-4 flyby ended in a flame-out and crash killing both men on board. As kids though in the 60's it was always a thrill to watch the shows start with the big photo-flash loop, sidewinder missile "live firings" at flares and all the exhibits.

    Pt Mugu is notorious for having the active runway so close to the spectator stands and for cold humid air.
    It made for spectacular passes and great visuals.
    When the clouds did not mess up the background.
    Also Vandy 1 was a black Tomcat and was a sight to behold.

    Love the 'ol Tomcat. The muscle car of fighters. I was in VF-102 Diamondbacks in the early 90's. Loved the low growl of those engines. Nothing like standing next to one waiting for its CAT shot in zone 5 AB at night time!!! What a site!!! Enemy aircraft that challenged the airspace around our carriers would turn-n-burn when they were lit-up from over 100+ miles away by it's radar. I feel it would still hold a valuable spot in the current needs of today's Navy. It adapted well to the new technologies and roles they added to it. Super Bug is very good, just no Tomcat. Tomcats Forever!

    Amazing that a 50 year old airframe is so capable that if Iran's enemies fly towards Iran, they will launch the tomcat. And when they light you up with that radar 130 miles away, (still classified) those enemies will turn and run like hell. Because we will no longer sell them parts since 1970, Iran created their own military industrial complex just for the f14 and Phoenix missles

    • @zoeaug9269
      @zoeaug9269 2 роки тому

      Also, in my experience. The Iranian people are some of most forward thinking, straight upward folks in the Entire region. Work, school, you know, Life tells me so. They are the Pershing people of that great empire, and proudly so. After the radical Islam takeover in 1970, F4 pilots were rounded up and given their choice fly these fresh new tomcats , or go to prison and be shot . Enemies all around, tensions surrounding , then Iran Iraq war gave them all new orders and were told , by the way don't bother trying to defect because your engines are detuned 12 percent or so and will be outran in shoot to kill ya orders, also don't bother ejecting , because they're disconnected so is the blown canapy function. What patronage. What would you do?

  • @hogansheroes2793
    @hogansheroes2793 3 роки тому

    They should have updated the F-14 Tomcats with new engines, avionics, computers, electronic warfare suites, and aesa radar.
    That would also lessen the maintenance.
    Far superior to the so called Super Hornet.
    Longer range, super long range fire and forget missiles.
    Defender of the fleet. They still don't have a suitable replacement for it.

      Following the overthrow of the Shah in 1979, the air force was renamed the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) and the post-revolution Interim Government of Iran canceled most Western arms orders. In 1980, an Iranian F-14 shot down an Iraqi Mil Mi-25 helicopter for its first air-to-air kill during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988).[3] According to research by Tom Cooper, Iranian F-14s scored at least 50 air-to-air victories in the first six months of the war against Iraqi MiG-21s, MiG-23s, and some Su-20s/22s. During the same period, only one Iranian F-14 suffered damage after being hit by debris from a nearby MiG-21 that exploded. The F-14 was also responsible for the 1st air to air kill in Dessert Storm shot down a MiG 25.
