Vandy1 was the single F14Delta they should have preserved. Went to sea with it once, yep Trap & Cat. I had a daily driver 57 Chevy pkup at Mugu that needed paint touchup, 12C shop was touching up Vandy 1 & applied their “excess” gloss black to make my 57 shine. Proud to be a former Vandy1 Mech.We wore bootys to protect us & the jets gloss paint surface when accessing the Turtlebacks or doing a pre-turn full systems engine maintenance turns. Its the only jet I ever maintained where every avionics box was orange.
Oh yeh just remembered, they unfortunately had 12C remove the world famous Playboy Bunny tail insignia from V1. Replaced it with that “politically correct” goofy Bat zapper. However unbeknownst to the public, continued to sell the “Bunny” flight jacket patches in the Gedunk. Todays 2021generation of “sensitives” would surely be offended.
VX-9 (after vx4 & vx5 combined) vandy-1, followed by 240. The last 2 F-14's built. Thank you for posting this. I lived with those two for a few years. I never thought I'd see Pt. Mugu again. Feels like another life. Thanks a million
My dad was stationed at NAS Pt. Mugu until 1979, at which point we were redeployed to NAS Alameda. I have so many fond memories of NAS Pt. Mugu, as some of the best years of my life were spent there. I'll never forget the F14 Tomcats, the F4s, the A7s, the P3 Orions, the C-130 Hercules, the S2 Trackers and the S3 Vikings that I use to see flying out of Pt. Mugu. The Tomcats, the A7s and the F4s were surely among my favorites and there's no other. Watching these aircraft at the base airshows, especially the Tomcats, along with the Blue Angels, are memories that will never be forgotten!
I remember point magoo PMTC 81to86 vxe6 mcmurdo station Antarctica 7 c130s with skids 7 uh1n helos all the travel on the continent was done by VXE 6 within400 miles Helo support out further than that we have to rely on fuel dumps. When you do stuff and see stuff on this planet very few humans ever see. Most people can read but its nothing like the history I have made and seen. Old sailor aircrewman
Van Nuys and Point Mugu air shows, I was there in the late 80s and 90s...I was a teenager, grew up next to Van Nuys airport.....thanks for the post.....miss Point Mugu air shows and the F-14
Yeah... in videogame and real airdefence looks amazing. Most of jetaircraft trully merge with special effect in videogame , while in real airshow airforce pilot never gave that much. Esspecially c0mmunis pilot , they simply doin freestyle & didnt care about the real purpose as foreigner invites them.
I remember the PLAYBOY BUNNY on that tail that's what caught my attention and then see it was something else. SAD. BTW, never know small world, I see you were on CV67, I went to A School with a AZ YEAGAR who was from ALABAMA and from CV67. I was just a boot camper at the time and YEAGAR was a FLEET SAILOR. He was HILARIOUS, looked like the mad magazine guy Alfred E. Neuman If you know him, please tell him to call or email me: Bobby Estey 757.846.4352 bobbycv64@yahoo.com - USS Constellation CV64. We are from the same era, you can also contact me Brother.
The Navy didn't want to take a chance on Iranians getting any of the parts they needed for their F-14's which is grounded due to lack of parts. I think some of them was saved to be placed on static display, but the majority ended up going to Davis Monthan AFB where they was scrapped immediately.
I think they saved only those which was going on static display at several Navy bases. The rest was destroyed because they didn't want the government of Iran getting parts for their fleet.
Before the F-14 becane Vandy 1, the squadron had 2 black F-4's. And the squadron insignia was the Playboy (officialy authorized by Hefner) rabbit head.
Miramar is now a Marine Air Station, but was a Navy base when I was sent there on TDY duty from Norton AFB. The Air Force use to put us up in San Diego at the Sand Man motel in hotel circle. We shipped Army troops out of Miramar to McChord AFB so the Army could pick them up and return them to Ft. Lewis.
Remember the old days as a kid in Port Hueneme. They did a low flyby over my neighborhood once around '89 during the Mugu Airshow weekend. Now the only Tomcat I get to see fly is made of styrofoam.
Most of these are from VX-9 and some from VX-30. You may have even had some from VX-4 in the mix. The very first, black Tomcat was actually the last F-14 ever built. It's the Tomcat on display at the memorial at NAS Oceana, now. Cool video, we never got to see these squadrons on the east coast!
I was stationed at the new top gun in Nevada and we had a black one come through for an airshow. This was back in 2001 so there were no more 14's flying sorties. The Navy had gone to the 18 and VX9, the Vampires had always had a black 14. From what I was told, they were all torn apart except the last one to ever roll off the production lines, they painted it black and use it for shows. Sad, because we developed the 14 to carry the AIM54 Phoenix which was a million dollar missile that we only fired a handful of times. What a waste of R&D and money.
I was in the Air Force, but got to see the F-14's stationed at Miramar NAS, in San Diego when we went down there to ship out Army personnel to McChord AFB. I knew about the Phoenix missile and it was good, but times changed and they came up with better missiles.
I got to go to Pt. Magu NAS to ship out equipment and supplies to the South Pole, while stationed at Norton AFB. The base looked nice and we was shipping the equipment out on our C-141's. I guess the equipment went to New Zealand first and then loaded on an aircraft like the C-130's which could land on the ice.
I seen them on the Carl Vinson in 1996 and seen them at Point Mugu California miss those badass planes. And when see them take off at night on a carrier. That is absolutely breathtaking
I grew up next to oceana master jet base and saw the a1sky hawk a6, f4 and the f14. I miss them all!! Now I live in fortsmith,ar. And getting ready for f35 and f16 again!!!! That will be sweet!
Sidney Mathious, fucking stupid decision. Just give 10-15 years sentence for each stolen part, and intensive daily checkup, nobody can steal it, except for some Pentagon generals, who will never go to public court or military court under the public scrutiny. So instead of watching from the bottom up, we better do the contrast, check from the upper direction FIRST, especially from the Pentagon AND. Those who are near the retirement exit. Until now, all of those American military technologies were sold WITH the approval of the Pentagon, the NSA and the POTUS. Iran was just the black goat here. Funny thing is IRAN airforce isn't better then the defunct South Vietnam Air Force in the 70s. Why the fuck that the States have to be scared of them to the point that the US had to discontinue and then to destroy all remaining parts of the most successful designed plane of its history until then?
To Fly a Black F-14 Nothing gets better than that. Love all F-14s since those were test F-14s I wonder if they pushed the Bird past mach 2.4 and could it handle Mach 3.0? Still Awesome Fighter and it all depends Who's Flying it period. .Just dawn on me watching this video no other plane Captures me more
Leonhart 306 the tomcat is such a large aircraft, its hard to maintain and the cost of fuel for it in those large tanks is so expensive. And the technology is outdated for its role. Too expensive really, but i still wish it was in service aswell don’t get me wrong it’s a beautiful bird
Primarily they protect the jet nozzles during carrier landing. Secondarily they act as stabilizing fins with the wings goes 60 degrees back. They also have glove veins just infront of the wingroots that extends outwards during supersonic.
Like so many pilots and other folks, I am so sorry to see that fabulous b ird go. I thik Cheney screwed the deal when he refused to contiue with the D-model evolution and production.
Whoo Playboi Black 😎 Personally , I like the A. Models Engine nozzle it just looks better on her . I understand that B and D Engines are better in every way But they could have made them look less generic ?

That sound is addictive. Its a damn shame we will never see a tomcat fly again.

This is still the most beautiful plane of all. I wish I had one I could fly around.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or DCS is your best option. Otherwise, I know what you mean😢
The F14 Tomcat and the SR71 Blackbird are the 2 most beautiful planes ever made.
Ya'll where Cat pilots, ya'll made thre rules, not us! I love every tomcat video!
Some aircraft just look right, and so fly so right.. The Tomcat belongs to the same club of legends as the Supermarine Spitfire!
F-14 Tomcat,. Simply the best. I love Tomcat ...!

"LONG LIVE THE F-14 TOMCAT, MAY YOU FLY FOREVER "...
"Anytime Baby"...
Spent many years developing the AWG-9 and APG-71 for the F-14A and F-14D at Point Mugu with Hughes Aircraft and Raytheon. Miss those times very much.
as an ex-Diamondback Tomcat driver, THANK YOU. It was a true force multiplier!

Thanks for posting I was in the seat shop at vx4 and left shortly after the merge with vx5

Great memories out at Pt Mugu
I thought an F 14 couldn't look any cooler, until I saw this one painted all black.
What an incredible fighter. Best of the best.

WOW! The Tomcat in black is very cool looking! Great vid and brings back memories! USS JFK 1980-82

They should have at least saved one tomcat for airshow purposes so our younger generation could experience it like we have
I wish they kept the Tomcat and continued to update it, instead of replacing it with F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
The Navy didn't want to take a chance on Iranians getting any of the parts they needed for their F-14's which is grounded due to lack of parts. I think some of them was saved to be placed on static display, but the majority ended up going to Davis Monthan AFB where they was scrapped immediately.

theres is 22 a full airwing saved

Awesome
Now that's a mans aircraft.
That black Tomcat looks really cool.. I seen an R/C F-4 Phantom painted like that here in in NZ.. thanks from down under,✈️👍🇳🇿
Before the F-14 becane Vandy 1, the squadron had 2 black F-4's. And the squadron insignia was the Playboy (officialy authorized by Hefner) rabbit head.
Loved seeing Vandy 1 in action, she's on display now at NAS Oceana, they should have left her painted black though.
Tomcat is very nice to look at during the flight when their wings are being sloped down,,, lookslike the spaceship fighter in the starwars.
awsome!! was stationed at mugu from 84-87, was a tomcat PC. loved that bird! ANY TIME BABY!!!!!!!
ANYTIME BABY!
Oh wow....Darth Vader. Beautiful.
Truly, Admiral Tom's "CAT"!
Absolutely love it thanks for uploading this. Watching this brings back memories of when I lived at NAS miramar... Good times at tomcat alley. 😊
Miramar is now a Marine Air Station, but was a Navy base when I was sent there on TDY duty from Norton AFB. The Air Force use to put us up in San Diego at the Sand Man motel in hotel circle. One of the most graceful aircraft ever.
LONG LIVE THE CAT, BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!
love that sound!
Remember the old days as a kid in Port Hueneme. They did a low flyby over my neighborhood once around '89 during the Mugu Airshow weekend. Now the only Tomcat I get to see fly is made of styrofoam.
ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY TOMCAT
HOLY SH*T where have you been, I missed you, lol but what a way to make a comeback, pure awesomeness!
Most of these are from VX-9 and some from VX-30. You may have even had some from VX-4 in the mix. The very first, black Tomcat was actually the last F-14 ever built. It's the Tomcat on display at the memorial at NAS Oceana, now.

Glad it survived and wasn't demolished.

I thought that looked like Pt. Mugu! :-)
It's just too bad they got too expensive to operate....I loved the Tomcat!
I got to go to Pt. Magu NAS to ship out equipment and supplies to the South Pole, while stationed at Norton AFB. The base looked nice and we was shipping the equipment out on our C-141's. hell yeah!!!! gees it was fun,,,,,,
Good ol' Vandy One
nice vid i stumbled upon... kudos.. #VX9

I used to be stationed there.
What a beast
Badass tribute They schould sell them to private people that want to fly them als private planes without the weapon stuff of course
They need to bring the tomcat back it is still lord of the sky's
The Navy destroyed all of them so the parts would not be stolen for the Iranian Air Force.
there are still F-14's around

What is the story behind the black edition of this f14 more specifically the playboy bunny edition of tomcat
there isn't a better looking plane when wings are in fast mode
R&Rd stick actuator, all secure.
If the A-10 can still be in service, why not the Tomcat? This video makes me sad that the military retired the F-14. #TomcatLivesMatter

wow.. loveit.. im a tomcat person..
The fins underneath towards the rear of the fuse? what is their purpose? I'm guessing just yaw control? Or is it more advanced then that?
77Avadon77 Probably just stabilisers, dont think they move at all.. basically more rudder fin surface area
Primarily they protect the jet nozzles during carrier landing. Secondarily they act as stabilizing fins with the wings goes 60 degrees back. They also have glove veins just infront of the wingroots that extends outwards during supersonic.
@@ilovebohol the glove vanes were disabled in the late 70s due to being found useless. The B and D models don't even have them.
Are you a Cat person, or a dog person? Me? I'm a Tomcat person. Love these Razgriz planes!
I must admit, I didn’t like it. I absolutely loved it !!! Thank you 🤗
5.13-someones gonna have a dead battery soon!!!
Like so many pilots and other folks, I am so sorry to see that fabulous b ird go. I thik Cheney screwed the deal when he refused to contiue with the D-model evolution and production.
He Sure Did he's a Hack I found out later Voting for Him and Bush big Disappointment
VX-9
Such a damn shame to see a great Fighter jet in retirement!!
Hard on
What year(s) was this?
the all black doesnt look good the best paint job is at 5:09 with the black fins and black top around the canopy
ME GUSTA!!!!!
Whoo Playboi Black 😎
Personally , I like the A. Models Engine nozzle it just looks better on her .
I understand that B and D Engines are better in every way But they could have made them look less generic ?
But those Pratt and Whitney Engines were the reason the Navy was losing a Tomcat a month.
