Greggs is nice and reliable. If you find yourself in a strange town you know what you're getting when you go to Greggs and honestly it's going to be more than half decent, even if not as exciting as you might get from a local baker. I'd go to a local bakery first but I'm not going to turn my nose up at Greggs. The vegetarian sausage rolls are also well worth trying even if you are a carnivore (as I am).

As a formerly puzzled American l’m so glad to finally find out what a Greggs is. I’ve seen them loads of times on Google Street View and for some reason it never crossed my mind that it could be food. I thought it could be a stationery shop, convenience store, book shop…baked goods never crossed my mind. I checked their website and I wouldn’t mind trying a few things there if I ever visit the UK again.

As others have said, they're a nationwide bakery and sandwich outlet, the baked food equivalent to KFC, or McDonalds. The menu range is pretty much the same, wherever the store is located. At this time of year, they usually add some festive items to the menu.

The one Warrens do these days look fancier but they're very similar to 90s ones and much better than Greggs. The Greggs one just have a very cheapy vibe but then Warrens is expensive these days. I love Greggs and I don't care who knows it! My order of preference would be 1) Bacon and Cheese wrap (only when it's so hot it nearly burns your mouth) 2) Chicken Bake 3) Sausage Rolls (but only in pairs...one is never enough!). I don't think I've ever bought anything that wasn't savoury though, or a salad or sarnie either because however good Greggs are at being a bakery, they're pretty average at the rest!! Great video Alanna.

I don't hate Greggs, but I regret that a year or so after they moved into my small town, two excellent family-run bakeries went out of business. Their pies, pasties and sausage rolls were much better than Greggs and, despite being smaller companies, they had a wider range of cakes, pastries and bread. Greggs was slightly cheaper, but not dramatically, so I guess it was the Greggs brand-name that drew the customers, especially the younger generation, and the smaller shops couldn't compete in the end. Such a shame!

Greggs is OK. It used to be loads better when it was a more traditional bakery. It still seems weird to me that they’ve become this huge nationwide fast food chain rather than the local bakers (albeit a chain locally) that I remember them as when I was a kid.

Having been out of the UK for years, and with the wonderful bakery that once existed in a particular town, I took my daughters to a Greg’s - we all wanted a pasty. We each had a different pasty. We all took one bite and threw the rest in the bin. It was bloody awful.

I used to love it while they were still running Baker's oven, which was basically Greggs but the food was served hotter and kept warm, for a bit of extra cost to the customer. Now i don't like it unless it's only a few mins out of the oven. Chicken bake over steak for me.

the Steak one wins it for me too.

I'm like you, they are not the best but I would still get lunch there if that was what there was. It is an old established bakery in Newcastle but I think they only became a national firm within about the last 15 years or so. I do tend to get a sausage roll but also some kind of cake such as bread pudding, an Eccles cake or a doughnut.

When I moved to the south coast in the mid 90s there were no Gregg's down here. The cheapest cheese and onion pasty in a local bakery was £1.00, whereas in Gregg's in Durham it was 41p. I had worked in London before moving here and there was a Gregg's in Wandsworth, where a cheese and onion pasty was 55p. I thought that I was being ripped off.
One Christmas after visiting home I brought a load of Gregg's pasties and stotties back for my poor, deprived southern friends to try.

I have never been into a Greggs until recently because I hate flaky pastry. Although it is very nice for sweet pastries with cream in them, it's just dire for a savoury item. My brother drove me to a hospital appointment 60 miles away and pulled into a Greggs for a snack on the way. I went in just for a pee. I recently learned that the toilets are always to the right in Greggs and that was true. To get there I had to fight my way through a very long queue inside. Tim Martin may be controversial, but he is the typical English eccentric, which is a unique feature of this country. He is not afraid to say what he thinks even if it loses him trade. I too am a Brexiteer, but even I thought his contribution to the debate was over the top, and yes, eccentric.

i have been going to Greggs since i was about 16 or 17 and finishing my education and now i'm in my 30's and i still think they're excellent...i don't care what anyone else thinks. they don't charge too much...they have good variety...they aren't overly indulgent or greasy like some fatty American places i have seen or too boring like some other English places. their sausage rolls and baguettes are good in particular iMO but i also like their basic but satisfying donuts...you don;t need over 100 flavours of donut to be happy...unless you're an american.
IMO Greggs are perfect for the drop in and get what you need for lunch fix...or if u need to grab something quick and leave fix. they have so much versatility on pastries, food and drink...
