The word calypso is coined from the igboid word “Kaiso” used by the igbo and Efik Ibibio people of nigeria and it means “let us follow along”

This documentary is a treat!! If you want the history of Calypso look no further than Calypso Dreams (2004). You will get clips from Alvin Daniell interviewing Calypsonians from Calypso Showcase (1992). You will see all the greats, Lord Blakie (Carlton Joseph), Mighty Terror (1921-2007), Mighty Sparrow (Slinger Francisco), Mighty Bomber (Clifton Ryan), Relator (Willard Harris), Black Stalin (Dr. Leroy Caliste), Brigo (Samuel Abrams) Calypso Rose (McArthur Lewis) & so many greats!!!! If you want another documentary to look at watch One Hand Dont Clap (1987, 88). Unfortunately, I believe just like Taan singing (Classical music) in Trinidad for the Indian diaspora, Calypso is dead in the respect that Soca has taken over. Instead of Calypso Monarch, now it is Groovy Soca Monarch. I mean after David Michael Rudder, I believe Calypso is now lost to the ages. I don't think Machel Montano could make 50-60 years in this business like Lord Kitchener (1922-2000) or the Mighty Sparrow. Even Destra Garcia & Fay Ann Lyons (Super Blue - or Blue Boy's daughter). But this is nothing new!!! During Kitchener's time he sang No More Calypsong (1967) . That's where Lord Shorty (Garfield Blackman) (1941-2000) gave Trinidadians Soca in the 1970s'. but unfortunately, the music has become lost since we entered the 2000s'.

Well said. Thank you for your insight. You have a valid point that MM and other Soca artistes, cannot keep up their relevance for as many years as Calypsonians, deceased or still living. I did see some life coming back to the Calypso stage, in the past five or so years and it looks promising. Soca seems to be loosing ground. 2020 is the first year in my life, I didn't listen to, or could name one Soca release - I may have lost interest in the genre. Maybe Groovy will have longevity.

Within the last 20 years I havent kept up with the music. I grew up in the 1990s'- for me prior to UA-cam my way of listening to music was casettes (TDK & Maxell) or CDs'. The last time I bought a CD was in 2005- Soca Gold 2005. Tunes like Madder Dan Dat, Mini Priest's Body Water, Explainer's re-working of Lorraine (1982) Rikki Jai's remixed version of Mor Tor.... I mean the music nowadays is digital- Napster, I Tunes, I ❤ Radio, Tune In Radio all these applications you can download to your smartphone. It is insane!! What I appreciate about You Tube is that people post songs straight from the LPs to the web, sp you can enjoy a 33, 45 or 78 from start to finish!! You can use Discogs to keep track of your vinyl collection- we live in an age where information is at your fingertips- but I am still old school as well.

@@ThePrinceChet Machel, Destra Garcia even Fay Ann can't hold a candle 🕯️ to these artists. Besides Soca is not 🚫 worth it. People would hardly remember the Groovy Soca Monarch, Road March 🏆 even Chutney Soca Monarch. Soca nowadays is noise- plain & simple.

Lord Kitchener (Aldwyn Roberts) 1922-2000. Educated at Arima Boys Government School- like Explainer, Kitch left school at 14 due to the demise of his parents- his father was a blacksmith& his mither was a housewife who would wash clothes & iron. He came from a family of six- they were poor. He stated in an interview with the Ultimate Selector- Sookram Ali that some children went to school w/ shoes & some didn't (he was one who went without). He started singing calypsoes for the workers who laid pipes for water. His earliest calypsoes were "Mary I am Tired & Disgusted" & "Shops Close Too Early" He started traveling early in 1947- he went to Jamaica, Curacao & Aruba. Then in 1948, he boarded the Empire Windbrush (as you just saw) for England. Kitchener recorded for the Lyragon, Melodisc & Parlophone labels. He ran a nightclub in Manchester. He remained in England, where he had an active career for 15 years (1948-1963). When Lord Melody left for New York City in the 1960s' Sparrow needed a new sparring partner, so he went to England to see if he could persuade Kitch to return to Trinidad. (Trinidad received Independence from Britain August 31, 1962 at midnight- the Union Jack flag went down & Trinidad- red, white & black went up). In 1963, Kitchener organises The Calypso Revue- his own Calypso Tent w/ the help of Leslie Samaroo & a host of Claypsonians including King Fighter- "Come Leh We Go Sookie", Lord Melody "Shame & Scandal" (1962)- who would also be the Master of Ceremonies in the 1970s' after his sojourn in New York, Lord Blakie- Steelband Clash (Road March 1954) & Maria (Road March 1962) & Lord Shorty- The Love Man of the 1970s'- the inventor of Soca- the modern day musical expressiom & art form in Trinidad. Lord Kitchener also takes the Road March that year with "The Road" while the Mighty Sparrow takes Calypso King with "Dan Is The Man In The Van"- a song about colonial education & "Kennedy & Kruschev"- social &political commentary on president John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) & Russia's premier Nikita Kruschev.

Pretender (1917-2002) according to the Mighty Sparrow "He could think fast" to quote him. I dont think even Gypsy (Winston Peters) could beat Preddie in an extempo match!!
