      @Raymond Larcom The shifts had jerks. So it would not shift to the next gear and the engine will rev up and then the transmission will shift with a kick.

    Just completed my repair. Same symptoms, when cold rough and slipping between 1-2-3. After warm up, all ok. I only replaced spring, broken in half. Adjusted the rear band while I had tranny opened up. Shifting perfectly again at 220,000 miles. Great video. 3.9, 42re.

      My Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ came with a small transmission cooler next to the radiator. I am not sure if it was included in all WJs or ones with a trailer package only. I do tow with this Jeep, so very necessary to have a tranmission cooler.

    great video! how can you tell what type of transmission your jeep has?

    • @DIYWithIndi
      @DIYWithIndi  3 роки тому +2

      The transmission number is on the side of the transmission itself. My Jeep WJ has a Select Trac (you will see this on the transmission lever) and the engine is a 4.0 L Inline 6. These have a 42RE Transmission. The bigger engines (4.7L) have a Quadra Trac II transmission and possibly a 44RE. Note that some parts for a 1999-2000 42RE are a bit different than the 2001-2004 42RE. So make sure you are getting the correct part (e.g. solenoid) for exact fit.

    • @DIYWithIndi

      I have leaks when I switched the pan with Dorman aftermarket pan with the drain plug. I kept the same gasket that came with the car. I might switch the gasket at some point or switch to the original pan which may be stronger than the aftermarket one to seal better. If you are using the original pan, then try a new gasket and let us know how that worked. Also see my other video on left turn issue - ua-cam.com/video/FkZq4ylBJW8/v-deo.html.

    thank you for sharing this video. I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee that will not shift into first gear. so all the shift solenoids are within reach once I remove the cover? Now is it best to replace all the solenoids or just the one that is in charge of shifting the first gear?

    • @DIYWithIndi
      @DIYWithIndi  2 роки тому

      Is it not downshifting to first? Or is it not engaging even during start? Yes, once you open the transmission pan, you can access the solenoid and pressure sensor. The solenoid is the one that goes bad mostly, so you can try replacing that first. Also check the accumulator spring (ua-cam.com/video/IvC_cRzJjPM/v-deo.html) and make sure you have enough transmission fluid (ua-cam.com/video/FkZq4ylBJW8/v-deo.html). Both will give trouble with shifting.

    • @DIYWithIndi
      @DIYWithIndi  2 роки тому

      @@alfredolopez-bruce6199 The usual suspects are low transmission fluid (ua-cam.com/video/FkZq4ylBJW8/v-deo.html), broken accumulator spring (ua-cam.com/video/IvC_cRzJjPM/v-deo.html) or bad solenoid (ua-cam.com/video/P42z4vqnlsA/v-deo.html). You may be low on fluid. The first thing I will check. See the first video link ua-cam.com/video/FkZq4ylBJW8/v-deo.html on how to properly check fluid level.

    • @DIYWithIndi
      @DIYWithIndi  2 роки тому +1

      The usual suspects are low transmission fluid (ua-cam.com/video/FkZq4ylBJW8/v-deo.html) or broken accumulator spring (ua-cam.com/video/IvC_cRzJjPM/v-deo.html) or bad solenoid (ua-cam.com/video/P42z4vqnlsA/v-deo.html). Thanks for this video, in cold oil I have a problem with engaging 2nd gear from the first. I will be changing the oil in a few days and first I will check this solenoid.
    Has anyone heard of howyou can check the resistance of this solenoid with a multimeter? What values are normal?
    Ok, I find something: "Governor Solenoid(4617210) 3.8-4.0 ohms"
    Can you check your old solenoid resistance to compare?

    • @DIYWithIndi
      @DIYWithIndi  2 роки тому +1

      Engaging from 1st to 2nd gear problem may be related to either low transmission fluid (ua-cam.com/video/FkZq4ylBJW8/v-deo.html) or bad solenoid. I am not sure about measuring the solenoid with multimeter. Possibly someone on the internet has an answer. I will suggest replacing the solenoid when you change the oil.

      Interesting that I have also noticed slippage while turning. Now that you said 'left turn', I have to confirm that it happens on left turn only. In my case it happens when the transmission is cold and I ignore it since it happens at low speeds. I would suggest the usual transmission maintenance - dirty or low fluid, dirty solenoid and pressure sensor (I have to replace pressure sensor in mine). The other item is to tighten the bands. I have not tried tightening the bands yet. Let us know if anything else fixes your issue.
