    1:40 and 4:10 goes into the deepest depths of me and touches unknown, delicate parts.
    This is such a special piece, Chopin takes a different turn here and I regret it so much he didn’t live longer and continued in this direction!
    I mean all his life’s work is divine, but just thinking about the potential here 😭

    Great performance of the first movement of the Cello Sonata Op. 65. Being his last published composition, it is interesting to speculate whether Chopin would have continued to explore the use of other instruments besides the piano in his works if only he had lived longer.

    To get more specific, in this piece Chopin demands a level of intensity that only Sol Gabetta, of all cellists, can bring to it. In this manner, Nelson Goerner succeeds to complement her expression and travels with her emotionally as the feel changes.

    Je suis devenu au fil du temps un affreux baroqueux, ne jurant que par William Christie, Spinosi, ou la nouvelle génération, mais cette sonate me touche infiniment, le violoncelle quitte son continuo pour échanger avec le piano, et fait rare, devenir essentiel, alors que je pensais que le piano se suffisait à lui seul. Les jeux de silence et de réponse sont merveilleux. Pour les parisiens, cette œuvre sera donnée dans le cadre du festival des jeunes talents, à Paris le 20 juillet. Je suis curieux de l'entendre. Mais j'adore le violoncelle même si je lui reproche d'avoir un peu éclipsé la viole de gambe. Mais il me semble que c'est la rarissime oeuvre sublime de Chopin, avec une invitation vers un instrument à cordes ;)

    • @dansingmuch
      @dansingmuch 3 роки тому +3

      Debra, if you'll listen closely there is no "accompanist" here. They are two artists playing together providing equal contributions. That is not to take away Sol Gabetta's unique artistry which no other cellist can come close to achieving. In small group works like duos, trios, etc., this notion of "accompanist" must be dispelled. I doubt whether these great composers thought in those terms.

    Sorry for not carring on in english, i'm not fluent in this language. I've read among advices, Chopin equal Piano. But this sonata is very particular, very rare. This piece has been composed betwwen Chopin and Franchome, a cello player. It had comming from frendship Beetween Chopin, Franchome and even Lizt. Just before his death, Chopin asked or wished to ear again this composition. And it was giving ( or granted?)
    I used to be pianist, until my sutdies, and i have difficulties to read correctely "la clef de Fa" Thanks to Covid, i play again ;) Il est difficile de critiquer l'interprétation de Sol Gabetta, que j'ai toujours en tête comme la plus grande violoncelliste depuis Jacqueline Dupré. Je ne sais si cette dernière à joué cette œuvre, et j'ai quelques difficultés avec les enregistrements antérieur aux années 1980. Il y a quelques semaines, j'ai entendu salle Gaveau Camille Thomas et Julien Brocal au piano, j'ai été conquis.

    I committed a crime of lèse majesté: I played this sonata at 75% of speed. It became absolutely arresting, far more than at actual speed. I love Sol Gabetta, it seems she would become one with her cello, if she only could. But here, it's everything far too rushed, I barely can make out Chopin's unmistakable style. Yes, every artist is entitled to his own "reading", I completely agree with that. But every listener has its own preferences too...

      I don't know... I'm a cellist too, and I am a bit ashamed to admit it, but this sonata has always bored me to tears. Until, that is, I watched Ms. Gabetta's and Mr. Goerner's performance. Never before has this sonata seemed so alive to me, so full of sincere expression. This is a unique piece among Chopin's works, and in my opinion it's such a challenge to bring it off effectively.

      @@scruffysean3640 Nobody phrases like Sol Gabetta. Everything she does brings a totally new approach to the work. I too have been a career cellist (59 years)

      @BetterMe981 4 роки тому +1

      FullOFGrace... interesting. I usually don't like the tempo anyone takes on this sonata, but I LOVED Sol's, I thought it was perfect. Well, because it's the same speed I play it. The reason is because then the Largo movement makes sense, and actually can be played as slowly as is required (a true Largo) to make it so beautiful. When the 1st movement is too slow, the Largo suffers and the whole things just sounds draggy, IMHO.

    • @BetterMe981

      @@scruffysean3640 Oh I'm so glad you got to hear this, then! I have loved this sonata since I discovered it at age 15 (I'm a professional cellist in my 50s now). I found it in a music store, bought it, started tackling it at home, then took it to my teacher to ask him to teach it to me. He laughed, lol, saying, "Ohhh, there's just too much music in that piece, it exhausts me." LOL. But that's what I loved about it. It seems to take a different emotion at every turn. He did teach it to me over the next few years. And I love it now just as much as over 35 years ago. Sol really gets this piece.

    It’s a nice work but for sure not his best one. It’s a little hard to understand the line of thought behind it. The theme is a bit confusing . I love Chopin and dedicated 19 years to his work . I love him very very much! But unfortunately, as far as this specific sonata , and if you can subjectively compare it with Schubert’s Arpeggione sonata ( played with the cello) Chopin falls short . His piano of course of spotless !
