    Lyrics
    Right outside this lazy summer home
    You ain't got time to call your soul a critic no
    Right outside the lazy gate of winter's summer home
    Wondering where the nut-thatch winters
    Wings a mile long just carried the bird away
    Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
    The heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own
    Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
    But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenings and songs of it's own
    There comes a redeemer, and he slowly too fades away
    And there follows his wagon behind him that's loaded with clay
    And the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom, and decay
    And night comes so quiet, it's close on the heels of the day
    Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
    The heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own
    Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
    But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenings and songs of it's own
    Sometimes we live no particular way but our own
    And sometimes we visit your country and live in your home
    Sometimes we ride on your horses, sometimes we walk alone
    Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own
    Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
    The heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own
    Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
    But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenings and songs of it's own

    In the intro the E is the bottom cord throughout so we have a major seven and then D6 with the E in the bottom and then you go to that regular E with the E in the bottom of the fifth fret

    If you listen to the live without a net version and really focus on the bass part during the solo it is actually a B minor rather than a D6, I think the confusion comes from Jerry treating it and approaching it with the D major tonality. But the D major triad over B in the bass is a Bm7

  • @mcmule2007
    @mcmule2007 4 роки тому +2

    Great stuff...here's another idea to expand our palette: jazz guitarists often relate everything to minor...and Eyes is sort of jazzy......Pat Martino is known for this and he and Jerry had mutual admiration. So for "Eyes"..... Emaj7 think of the relative minor chord...C#m. A C#m triad has related melodic triad extensions and they are E G#m B. So you can play the following triads over an Emaj7 chord: E C#m G#m B It's just another way of mixing up all the same notes but you will end up with some nice non-scalar lines. I got this from Garrison Fewell's excellent book "Jazz Guitar Improvisation: A Melodic Approach"

  • @charlespark490

    D6 is the same as Bm7. The chord is Bm but Jerry is using the flatted 7th blue note. he loves the blues and bends into it giving it a D6 sound ( a few cents short of Bm7).

    You can definitely hear the d note in it but it’s actually an open a, take the a-minor shape and move it up fifth fret and play the open a with it.

    Mind. Blown. Definitely the D6 makes so much more sense. Been playing the Bm for 40 years, but it always sounded like a jarring interval. The D6 is a tension interval. The D has always been my target note soloing over tat chord, the B is already in the E maj7. And when the A comes in the line is chromatic from Eb, D, C#.

    cool discussion on "Eyes" - we do use the Bm, btw...but either way, that little BB Box on the 10th-12th position works great (D,E,A,B,(Eb),F#) for soloing over this progression. You can hang on that position and get a lot of great leads and easy transition chord-to-chord

    • @daacrusher2001
      @daacrusher2001 6 років тому

      Oh, I totally get it - and I'm going to go listen to some versions, maybe I'll hear it differently now. The Dead have a lot going on in their jams and often change things around. We decided to use the studio version with the band to get the structure nailed down because the live versions tend to vary a bit.

  • @brbadge
    @brbadge 6 років тому

    I get what you're saying.Bob often leaves the root off,because Phil is covering the bottom of the chord.But in this case,Phil always starts with the B as his base. From a guitar point of view ,if there is a bassist,if you put that low D in there ( the D barre chord),you'll get some funny looks.Hence,that is why it's a B minor chord ( Bm7 works too). The D6 could work too, although I've never seen Bob use that particular inversion.

  • @imapocock5494
    @imapocock5494 3 роки тому +1

    @StitchMethod Guitar - you're a great teacher and very good guitar player. Thanks for the videos. As a point of clarity, the intro chord progression for Eyes is: Emaj7 > E6 > Emaj7. It took me years to figure this out as all the tabs and youtube videos never sounded quite right. But 100%, the chord nobody can figure out is an E6, not a Bm or a D6 as you suggest. The E6 is played like an open Am chord starting at the 5th fret with your pinky anchored on the E (A string 7th fret). I hope this helps. I think Bobby plays an E6 add 9 while Jerry plays the E6. Watching the Grateful Dead Movie helped me figure out the E6 as there is a good view of Jerry playing the opening progression. I'm not trying to call you out, just trying to help!

    • @StichMethodGuitar
      @StichMethodGuitar  3 роки тому +1

      Saw your comment on another post... the Bm part is the Jam section, not the opening. Yeah, the opening has the E6, but the Jam is a different monster

    Hi. Sounds great and learning alot. I've been playing this song forever - it sounds good to hold the Emaj7 for the whole measure, but I have always hammered from Emaj7 to a straight A major (both open position) at the beginning of the vamp. You get that downward sound from B to A on the A string that way too.

  • @Castlehassle2075

    You are absolutely helping me to “stitch it together”. I’ve always loved “eye’s of the world” because of the strange yet beautiful melody, also the rhythm. Apparently its in the same time signature as Pink Floyd’s “money”, which is 7/4 i believe. Difference Is that Pink Floyd’s moves to a 4/4 for the “money” jam and the Grateful Dead stay in the tricky 7/4 for the entire song. But what Ive always found strange and beautiful was “eye’s of the world” solo. Now I understand what Jerry was doing moving between an Amaj scale then shifting to an Emaj scale for the Emaj7 part, subtle yet profound. I feel a slight, playful Eb Locrian , just a tease for the Emaj& transition. Ive always found the Locrian and Phrygian modes to have a eastern mystique, they are similarly exotic sounding when you play them in the same key. Im thinking of the F# Phrygian in Jefferson Airplanes “white rabbit “ that Jorma opens the song with. It can be played in a F# Locrian with a similar feel. I feel a lot of that playfulness in Jerry’s style and I know that He was a big influence on Jefferson Airplane. They lived in the same house for a while in the mid 60’s. No doubt listening Miles Davis’s “sketches of Spain” while experimenting with “Owsley’s” magical potion led them all deep into the mystery of the Modes. Thanks again, you are the best Guitar teacher Ive ever had my brother! Keep up the good work!!

    I like the jazzy flavor of an Emaj7 vamp on the intro. I get what you saying with too much of a 'drop' to the Bm sound. Try from the 'A' shape Emaj7 drop to an Emaj6 or C#m inversion then to the 'D'shape Emaj7. Not sure I am making sense on a year old video. I am not saying I don't see the D6. I am hearing that smooth JG drop in sounds. Kind of like that slide you talk about down back into the Emaj7. Cheers. Just thinking out loud....You would still be a great teacher if you didn't know how to play guitar, you playing is a bonus. Thank you sir.

    Hey there love ur channel love the content very entertaining. I was working on eyes and get the jam and all but I've been trying to figure out what happens toward the end of most versions of eyes of the world it usually alternates between the Emaj7 and Bm or D6 but then it seems to go to some sort of diminished run and then alternates between what sounds like Emaj7 and whatever that dim thing is before the end of the jam ,it almost sounds like the help slip ending when the don't go to fanklins tower ...hopefully this a males sence ...lol . well hopefully you can shed some light , I've looked all around at eyes lessons on the internet and you tube and no one had went that deep into the jam . I figured your probably the best person to ask . There's a good example of this in about the 10-11min mark of the eyes of thw world from October 19 1974 . Thanks

    A year late and a few dollars short but I think you are onto something with the D. But here is the WEIRd thing: I think they MAY use both ways. Because I will play it one way along with one version of the song and it sounds great, then switch versions and that second note sounds off. Then other times it sounds like the even change the Em7 after the first 3 strums. They are always fluid and changing but I notice it alot with Eyes.

      On top of the Emaj 7 the flat 7 of the mixo clashes quite hard and is not the proper scale. Although the second chord , the Bm the E mixo works fine because B Dorian and E Mixolydian are the same scale and proper scale for that part.

      Actually what I more accurately should have said is that if you are in the E major scale and you hit the D note (flattened 7th) over the B minor it totally works and sounds very Jerry. Its the D over the B minor that does it. I was also fooling around, after watching your video, and found that the D major scale basically worked over the B minor and you can then slide whatever you are doing two frets back the the E.

      Go through the blues primer first and then see what you think. Class 1 builds on that. I say yes.

      @@imapocock5494 right, but I'm talking about the jams in the middle. Emaj7 >Bm and Emaj>Bm>A

      Yeah the E6 is in the opening, not the jam part

      @@StichMethodGuitar My bad, fellas. Could've sworn you were talking about the intro. 1st jam is Emaj7 > Bm7 then next jam is Emaj7 > Bm7 > A. After the lyrics are done, they vamp on a Emaj7 then go into an Ab minor at least they do that in the early 70s versions. Can't vouch for anything in the 80s.

    As for the whole Bmin vs. D6 aspect, I wonder if it would be helpful to know what Phil is playing on bass.

    • @STSGuitar16
      @STSGuitar16 4 роки тому +5

      My guess is that Phil is probably just as free on the actual progression as the rest of the band. They say that the bass player is the one who decides what the root chord is, but considering how free this whole song was throughout all the times it was played, I'd venture to say Phil likely never played it the same either. I mean even Bobby has at least four or five different variations of chords he would run through in Eyes during the verses and jams, so it would probably be hard to nail down totally. I'd just say it's like a modal jazz piece with variations on a central theme. I'm sure sometimes the chord was a Bmin and sometimes it was D6. Either way, it was always Eyes. I've found it to be the hardest Garcia guitar song to really nail down the changes smoothly. Just as he said, no one else could/can play that one like Jerry.

      You did not hurt my feelings, I think you were offending the students on UA-cam. Most of which enjoyed and retained the information from the video. If it’s too technical for you, you can say, “this is too technical for me, I can’t understand this” right? Again, not to offend you, I am neither upset or hurt, I just don’t understand why individuals hide behind a group mentality when poo-pooing something.
