i was backpacking through cuba for 4 weeks last year. havana and varadero are little oases in a country that otherwise suffers from extreme poverty and a lack of pretty much everything. i was in areas that had no electricity 12 hours a day, self-sufficiency with everyday things like bread and other groceries was associated with endless queues. i can only recommend not to judge the whole country from the big tourist spots.
As a Cuban born and bred myself, I’m very happy to see you had a good time in my home country, all while remaining conscious of the terrible situation that locals are living in. Great stuff as always Drew, keep on doing these amazing videos. ❤
@@mario_luis_dev the reason I asked is because, most Miami Cubans just blame socialism for the situation Cuba is in without realizing the damage the embargo has done for decades. They think Cuba was some paradise for the average person before Castro and during Batista. They have never stepped foot in Cuba nor do they know anything about life in Cuba
I’ve been to Cuba (Cruise), I saw 4 different cities and I fell in love with Cuba 🇨🇺 and it’s people. One of my favorite countries that I’ve been to. I need to go back!!♥️ 😘
i was in cuba from april 20-30th and the gas is the thing that shocked me the most. we didn’t have a lot of options as far as food went however that didn’t take away from the beauty that cuba has to offer. the people are also the nicest i’ve ever met. well done in encapsulating the cuba i hold near to my heart
We have a very loving and happy culture no matter the struggles we go through and just enjoy our lives. I already moved away from Cuba but i am sure they are still as welcoming as ever.
@@tomgachagan1347oh please , that’s just propaganda. The embargo is just the Cuba regime excuse, white they live like millionaires. The main protein source of Cubans is chicken that comes from the USA.
Ive been to cuba twice (Im a Canadian) and i found that Cubans were some of the nicest people I've ever met. Despite everything they've gone through/go through they're very vibrant and happy people.
Love that lady... she spoke from the heart, something I bet million Cubans think but like she says "she doesn't care..." because she is already free in her mind. Excellent lady. Thank you for making her voice worldwide.
As a Cuban i appreciate the video i think you did a great job showing our country and the kindness of our people and even through the struggles that Cubans go through they always try to stay happy and welcoming to anyone visiting and once again thank you for showing some of our culture and the beautiful aspects of my country.
That bar at the end of video is actually a tourist trap in old Havana. Random locals would approach you acting all nice and friendly, and bring you to that bar, which overcharges you for the drinks, and you definitely are paying for the "guides" drink too.
😂 I thought you might have said robbery, murder, etc. being overcharged for drinks and buying for others is “normal” in us go figure, but so is murder and robbery 🤦🏾♀️
Never clicked faster on any of your videos until today, as a American with Cuban roots, this is fascinating to see. Thank you for sharing a piece of my families country and showing it for what it really is. My grandmother still lives in the tiny Island of Youth till this day located just below mainland cuba, and the stories she tells me of the nation today definitely add up. You can connect to her island via a flight from Havana, which should be once or twice a day. Cheers from Dallas!
SO PROUD OF YOU!! I've been watching you for years and Im so happy for your success and that you've grown your team! Keep exploring and showing us the world!
Cuba is such a beautiful place and reminds me a lot about my home country Angola. vintage cars are also very common among the Portuguese Angolans and also the vibe of my country matches that of Cuba. i love it
We have roots from Angola in Cuba. There is a lot of Angolan descent in Cuba. Cuba is a mix of Spanish People, Indigenous People and African people, and we have all kinds of different skin colors; we are very diverse.
Hope it's was absolute joy in that stunning Caribbean gem, thank you very much for sharing your incredible journey with us. Wow its just an unforgettable adventure! Congratulations and enjoy
I agree with you about the ancestral home, Drew. I was in Salerno Italy in Feb-March and I got to go to my father's family's palazzo which is 400 years old. I couldn't go in, It's starting to crumble but wow! I had been there 65 years ago as a kid and this visit was very emotional. I had wanted to get it when my grandfather died, he still owned it but things happened and it wasn't meant to be. Shalom,Shalom from Israel. p.s. I know a guy here who is a Cuban Jew.
you went all the way to italy but were too scared to go into a building thats 400 years old because you thougth it would collapse after standing for 400 years at the very second you came in? :D
@@devinmcgroot7560 No, The roof is caving in. I've been in plenty of buildings that are older. In fact, I lived in an apartment that old 3 years ago in Sicily. Anyway, an uncle sold it illegally to someone else years ago, even after I told him I wanted it so I didn't have access. My cousin said it would cost 800,000 Euro to acquire and fix it. Neither of us has that much. Italy isn't that far and I've been many times. I'm not a tourist.
@@devinmcgroot7560 I will tell you if you go thru Booking, to double check with the hotel by messaging them if they have received any prepayments they may have required. Not all do but some do. I had a problem with this at the last minute. 2 years ago, Booking had a customer service number you could call and they were good. I didn't find it this time but it all worked out. If you're nervous about booking yourself, use a travel agent. They get paid by the airlines and hotels. It might be the best option for a first time traveler.
Great journey through Havana! What stands out is how warm and friendly the Cuban people are. You seem to see most everyone with a welcoming smile on their face.

All I can think of is how I’d love to send my dad here on a trip! He’s a real classic car guy, can name the model and year of nearly any old car without even thinking, and I think he’d adore just walking down the street there.
That’s one of the most fascinating aspects of Cuba are the classic cars they drive. Reminds me of Lebanon and how they drive older German cars and really get as much life out of them as possible!
The old Cars in Cuba are great. The gas smell riding inside them and the headache after riding in them, not so great. If I need to travel 1/2 hour or more, I'll find a Hyundai.
Thanks for visiting my country, Drew and the crew! I really appreciate your empathy and I'm glad you got to meet the real people, who despite the precarious situation we face, remain welcoming and cheerful. Greetings ❤🇨🇺

Accept not really. Most of the country is dealing with rolling blackouts and outrageous queues for basic necessities like bread and water. Places like Havana and Baracoa are not idicitive of how the majority of the country lives, those are tourist spots. Its some of the worst poverty in the world.

1. statistic that drew gave on Cubas avg salary being 50$ is simply false- its gdp per capita as of 2021 (according to the United Nations) was estimated to be about 11000 which means that a monthly average salary would be closer to 900$- wouldn't trust other organizations that literally don't have access to operate in Cuba- even so I see these estimates to not fall below 150$ per month 2. drew says that lack of access to healthcare and education is not good when in reality it excels in these two departments given their financial resources- has one of the most accessible and affordable healthcare systems in the world leading to a life expectancy similar to USA's despite being MUCH poorer- education wise it is one of the leaders in latin America in terms of standardized testing once again despite being economically disadvantaged Finally, I saw Drew draw upon this somewhat but the economic situation in Cuba is not great but it could very obviously be made better if the US were to lift their embargo which the UN deemed was illegal for the US to do. Shortage of supplies in Cuba is also a direct result of these embargoes- these issues with Cuba like gas and food and almost everything else western media tells us would not be prevalent at all if the US would lift embargoes. I will not lie and say that the Cuban government has not made its mistakes in the past but the modern government is highly accepting and decent and simply has a different economic model from the US which doesn't seem like grounds to me for the US to essential decrease the standard of living for everyone on the island
first comment I've come across that addresses the historical revisionism, misconceptions, and propaganda around Cuba. Hell, Drew even incorrectly states WHY the Cuban cars are stuck in the same period. The embargo came first; Castro didn't just decide on a whim that all cars were to be only made in Cuba. In a sea of capitalist nations unwilling to do trade with them because they won't let superpowers strip them of their resources, they had to make due with the current automobiles that were in the nation before the revolution.
Tell me you haven’t visited Cuba without telling me. Do your math now, but remember the 1 dollar right now is 350 Cuban pesos. That medicine you are talking about is for tourists, education is a joke, I know I was studying there. And medicine, please. Don’t listen to the propaganda
@@WilcoWes This just shows that everyone is prone to propaganda. Im sure Drew didnt mean it in a bad way, its just what was taught to him. Historically Capitalist countries always tried to destroy socialist countries, by militaristic or economic means, legal or illegal.

Yes, it's true, You will feel back to 1950, I was in Cuba in 2019. I have beautiful memories in Santiago and Havana. But there is a lot of problem in Cuba like their neighboring Caribbean Islands. It is about time to adapt to change in order to succeed. Cuba is now suffering more because of the pandemic and high inflation. I like Cuba.
Love your videos Drew! As a 1st Generation Cuban American with family still there, this is a look at tourism while shedding some light on the day to day struggle Cubans experience under communistic oppression. Beautiful people and hearts born under unfair governmental evil. Pray for Cuba 🇨🇺
i think you misunderstood, like they said in the video the governmnet is actually pretty nice, it gives free school and doctors and subsidized food prices. the problem is the economic sanctions and blockade, which the usa has put. It makes it hard or impossible to import necessities, like gas which is necessary to run cars, tractors, industry, etc. This difficulty importing necessities is stifiling development and causing economic hardship. every economy needs to trade, especially island nations.
I have travelled to Cuba over 15 times in my life. Ever since my uncle married a cuban when I was 12. I love Cuba, I love the people, I love the cars, I love the beaches. However my heart aches for them, it is not an easy life and its getting worse every single day. No food, no gas, cut off from the outside world, beer shortages lol, corrupt everything... I love the Cuban people and I hope for better conditions for them in our lifetime.
I definitely appreciate creators showcasing the people that make their videos happen, but for a channel so dedicated to showing the diversity of the world, there's sure not much of it in your production team.
This is a long post but I visited Cuba last year. I appreciate videos about Cuba but nobody shows the reality of this place. Many of those old cars are in bad condition. We were riding one through the countryside and we broke down several times on the side of the road. We handed out coloring books and crayons to some children and they looked like they had never seen these items in their lives. You would have thought we'd given them a thousand dollars. Many Cuban men get women pregnant and leave them after, creating so many single mothers. It's difficult enough living in poverty but when you're a single mother too? We went inside people's homes in Havana. The buildings are crumbling apart, the roof was held up by makeshift poles made of wood to prevent it from caving in on them, the windows are completely open (no glass, shutters, nothing). Children could so easily climb on a piece of furniture and fall right out the window. There is sewage running all over the floors of the apartment "lobbies". You literally have to jump over so many puddles of human sewage just to get upstairs and inside your apartment. The "pharmacies" all have shelves that are almost completely empty so when people are sick, there is no over-the-counter medicine available for them. People are starving. Many people live next door to restaurants that cater to tourists. They have to smell food all day long that they can't afford to eat. People have to stand in long lines at the grocery store to get food, which is rationed out to them. Of course most of it is unhealthy food with no nutritional value at all. I could go on and on. The people are happy because this is all they know and they have each other. But Cuba is not a wonderful place. My heart breaks for these people. That woman at the end is speaking positively about her country because if she said anything bad on camera, she would probably end up "missing" if the government found her. Yes school and healthcare are free but at the cost of what? The healthcare is bad. Many Cubans have college degrees but there are no jobs for them. You could have a degree in engineering but drive a taxi around. Free education is useless if it's not helping you get out of poverty. I wish people would show more of this side because many people see filtered and photoshopped pictures of Cuba and don't see what it's really like. I know Cubans who have made it to the U.S. and don't ever want to go back to Cuba. There's a reason why.
yup, communism sucks lol we're all living like kings in america compared to most of the world. in my 3 bedroom house, seated in front of $8000 computer tech watching this video and making this comment with 0 insecurities in my life. i hope that someday we can share the wealth with other countries like Cuba, Syria, Lebanon, etc
Thank you. I left Cuba when I was 20yo, 15 years ago. My mother and grandma still live there. My friends, my family, my husband's, all suffering because nothing we send it's close to enough to give them a dignified life. Cuba is one of the poorest countries in the world because even the people who work at those wonderful tourist places make so little and everything is so expensive. Americans complain about inflation but can't even imagine making $20 a month when a bar of soap costs $5 in Cuba, when you have access to electricity or running water 2 days out of any week, where 99% of the population relays on public transportation which sucks, where every "free" service you pay out of your back, with your hunger, tears, blood, and suffering. Cuban's are modern day slaves, prisoners in their own home. We couldn't travel for 50 years and because people will flee to a literal warzone, when the government made sure nobody wanted us, they allowed us to travel, but again, no country wants to give us visas bc they know we will stay even if it means living on a sewer. Anything is better than Cuba. And I'm tired of the "it's capitalism/US embargo's fault" rhetoric because it's not. The 1lb of chicken the government sells to us every month (rationed, of course) comes from the USA. The rice, etc. We get so many goods from the USA in Cuba it's not even funny, because it's one of the only countries who still does business with such a corrupt government who doesn't pay and has lost almost all trading relationships in the world. Yes, Communism is the worst thing that can happen to any country, because it's a lie. It always ends up in tyranny and even though unregulated Capitalism has it challenges, when it's regulated and less corrupt, it works. All the best countries in the world are Capitalist with good Social programs in place. All the worst are Communist tyrannies: Cuba, North Korea, China, etc.
@@daMillenialTrucker thank you much. It hurts my heart seeing so many rich white kids in America singing the praises of communism bc they're lazy entitled pos who won't do anything for themselves and still live with their parents. Me and my husband left Cuba 15 years ago as adults and we owned our second home because we broke our backs. Every Cuban I know owns their house here. We all came here to prosper because we really know what it is to be born in the most precarious situation without anything, not even prospects. Coming from Cuba, we know everything is possible because there's few places worst in the world, but these ignorant keyboard warriors who've never gone hungry in their lives and would have a mental break down if their wifi was down for more than 5 minutes, love to be communist from the safety of their capitalistic free country.
He has a lisp that makes him sound like a wimp. But that aside, this video was so BS. The reason they live like it’s 1950 is because of communism. They are stuck that way because they are poor due to communism.
As a half-Cuban myself who has visited Cuba many times I feel really proud of my country when watching this video. Even though living there is hard the people stay happy and friendly. They try to make the best with what they have and they have some of the strongest mindsets of any country. I would definitely recommend checking out some more of the island. Havana is great but to get the full experience you need to visit multiple places. Definitely recommended are Santiago de Cuba, Cienfuegos, Pinar del Rio, Guardalavaca and Callo Coco.

I was lucky enough to get to see Cuba, and going through immigration in Havana was absolute chaos. Absolutely beautiful country. There’s a crystal clear white sand beach a few hours out from Havana called Cayo coco.
Visited Cuba for 2 days with my family in 2018. We had a great time. The people, food and local culture were amazing. We thru local street markets in Havana and even took a tour of the city in the 50s cab. It sucks how the US has isolated the country for decades.
love your content! but i think the building at 6:33 that has the Puerto Rican flag painted over it is located at Miami, FL. besides that, amazing video and great way to learn about a different country!
Would be easier to have acess to medicine and modern technology if the country wasnt sanctioned. The issues arent because of communism they're because of Western imperial reactions to the possibility of communism. These people are clearly making the best with what they have, so full of life and love and pride for Cuba. I hope we can open up the relationship with them again soon.
This is one thing I will definitely do for myself Spend a couple of weeks in Cuba safely. I love anything old school and have always heard the story from my Miami Cubans and family but I need to see it for myself. I know I will be fan girling over the 1950s era of things there. I have yet to watch any vids about it for more than 2 mins because I want to experience it, I have respect for the people of Cuba and know a lot about the culture and struggles they have gone through and keep battling ever existing day. For us we see color and beauty, for them it’s a day long line to get a couple of eggs to eat with rice. Cuba I love you, God please let my mission take me where I am needed most
Hey Drew! Cuba is Amazing , RIGHT?! I met 3 of the people in your video on my journey there in July. Such good souls! Keep up the great work my friend!
I almost jumped out my chair when you said that Cuban food is not that good. Street food in Cuba is not as in other countries, they suffer from limitations and harassed by the police and inspectors. To taste Cuban food unfortunately you have to go to a restaurant (called Paladares), or hook up with a family that will cook for you our traditional food. We draw a lot from Spanish and middle eastern culinary traditions (through Spain), with a mix of local ingenuity and resources. Also, I would recommend you to actually go with a guide, because for the same reasons life in Cuba is unknown for foreigners, their treasures are not well publicized. I see you didn't take a foot outside the old Havana, Centro Havana and El Vedado (the actual Downtown). For some reason, I believe that you went only on a weekend, so you didn't see people nor kids going to schools, work, etc. In general I'm happy to have a video showcasing my old daily scenery. Thanks for that :D
The food is not very good now bc there's not much to cook or anything cook with anymore. The same way there's shortage of gas, there's shortage of everything. My mom still lives there and even with the money we send her every month, she struggles to find goods to buy. It's hard for them to keep a good quality of food or anything to be honest. If a foreigner can't find good food, imagine the people who live there and have to do with what they have, which is very little. It's sad.
I was surprised to find out that Cuban people are very happy. With all the restrictions on trade, I thought that they would be more of a sad kind of people, but they still have a vibrant culture. I also find it amazing how they can maintain cars from the 1950s.

1. statistic that drew gave on Cubas avg salary being 50$ is simply false- its gdp per capita as of 2021 (according to the United Nations) was estimated to be about 11000 which means that a monthly average salary would be closer to 900$- wouldn't trust other organizations that literally don't have access to operate in Cuba- even so I see these estimates to not fall below 150$ per month
2. drew says that lack of access to healthcare and education is not good when in reality it excels in these two departments given their financial resources- has one of the most accessible and affordable healthcare systems in the world leading to a life expectancy similar to USA's despite being MUCH poorer- education wise it is one of the leaders in latin America in terms of standardized testing once again despite being economically disadvantaged
Finally, I saw Drew draw upon this somewhat but the economic situation in Cuba is not great but it could very obviously be made better if the US were to lift their embargo which the UN deemed was illegal for the US to do.
In a sea of capitalist nations unwilling to do trade with them because they won't let superpowers strip them of their resources, they had to make due with the current automobiles that were in the nation before the revolution.

i think you misunderstood, like they said in the video the governmnet is actually pretty nice, it gives free school and doctors and subsidized food prices. the problem is the economic sanctions and blockade, which the usa has put.

I’m actually Cuban and cuba is literally beautiful 😂😂❤❤🇨🇺🇨🇺🇨🇺
I was lucky enough to get to see Cuba, and going through immigration in Havana was absolute chaos. Absolutely beautiful country. There’s a crystal clear white sand beach a few hours out from Havana called Cayo coco.
You changed my expectations of cuba to 180 degree angles❤
I love everyone in your new crew, Drew!! 💙
Cuba has been always an interest for travellers ❤ what a place & strong people tbh
Cuba has been added to my bucket list!
Worst place ever
Visited Cuba for 2 days with my family in 2018. We had a great time. The people, food and local culture were amazing. We thru local street markets in Havana and even took a tour of the city in the 50s cab. It sucks how the US has isolated the country for decades.
love your content! but i think the building at 6:33 that has the Puerto Rican flag painted over it is located at Miami, FL. besides that, amazing video and great way to learn about a different country!
Yes indeed! Lol I was thinking the same thing lol that's on US1 southbound towards downtown MIA
I'm Indian ,everytime I watch Drew videos, Awesome job Bro ❤
دائما الجديد و المفيد يعجبني كثيرا المواضيع و الفيديوهات التي تقدم على هذه القناة الجميلة🙏🙏🙏🇲🇦🌹🌞
👍🙏
Would be easier to have acess to medicine and modern technology if the country wasnt sanctioned. The issues arent because of communism they're because of Western imperial reactions to the possibility of communism.
These people are clearly making the best with what they have, so full of life and love and pride for Cuba. I hope we can open up the relationship with them again soon.
If someone from Cuba and someone from Iceland have a kid, it is going to be an icecube
This is one thing I will definitely do for myself
Spend a couple of weeks in Cuba safely.
True
19:31 Drew just said she's hot..she's very kind😂😂
Mr. Drew: Congratulations to you for heading to Havana, Cuba in great joy with your lovely friends to tours around the capital city of Cuba last Month in 2023❤❤❤
Love how your videos have gone from 98’ cam corder to an actual masterpiece. Never stop sharing your experiences dude
'The food in Cuba is not that great'. Wait, what? I've ate like the BEST fish there and the black bean soup is mouth watering!

Actually, I’ve eaten cuban food before and for me personally, it’s delicious
🤣🤣have you just come out of a famine
I have to say that I think I’m the only Cuban follower you have lol, I’ve been following you for a while now. Just today I saw the old video of all the countries you visited and was only waiting for cuba to show up, and now a whole video about my country! Thank you for visiting, some people don’t like to go to cuba because their theory is that going there supports the regime, but by going you are helping a lot of people, cuba has depended on truism for years. In any case, cheers for going!
No creo que seas el único pero bueh, yo solo estoy haciendo una investigación, no estoy suscrita como tal
simple, if they help normal people, people will feel better, then people won't protest.
I heard it from some people around me, sad truth, they want life to go according to their own will
I’m Cuban and have visited every summer since i was 6 months old! I love staying there so much
20:10 Gratitude wells up within me for sharing the impactful statement made by the courageous woman towards the end. Her bravery sent shivers down my spine, prompting reflection on the privileged position I find myself in as a Western European. Thank you sincerely for shedding light on such powerful perspectives.
Would love drew to do a non touristy video of Cuba, so we can see the real cuba. This video doesn't show the harsh realities of Cuba.
Exactly. Anthony bourdain he ain’t
Long live the revolution! 🚩🇨🇺
I left Cuba when I was 2. My parents said goodbye to everyone they loved so that I could be free. They loved their country and it it wasn’t for me, communism and all, they would have stayed. I hope I get to see Cuba one day before I die. I’m almost 60 so I doubt I will. Thanks Drew, this may be the closest I’ll ever get 😢
Hi Sooki. You're gorgeous.
Would you be open to getting to know each other ?
Been to Havana twice on day trips whilst in Cuba, and we were lucky enough to stop in Havana overnight on a cruise, so it gave us a chance to explore Havana on our own, and had a few drinks in Havana during the evening.
As a Cuban decent from America . I truly appreciate the time and effort you took on this video .
