  • Review of the Springfield Armory 'Operator' 1911 handgun. Handgun is a full sized government model 1911 chambered in .45 ACP. Further details can be found on Springfield's website. If anyone has shared my experience with gun out of the box with some of these same issues mentioned in the video please let me know, I’m very interested to know if I just got a bad one.

    Adding a late comment to your vid.
    I always appreciate 1911 reviews more from MIL/LE contributors who actually carry 1911s more so than others because I'm in the same field and want to hear about their experiences. Like the video going over the criticisms. I too carry this on duty and I share most of those, but like you, carry this on a regular basis for work. I added a magwell and that WC frontstrap as well. I use the WC mags too, but like the Medgars which I carry in my go bag as back ups.

    You have to spend 2k to get a fully reliable 1911 for duty like a dan wesson specialist. Everything else needs a duty tune. Hilton from 10.8 performance goes into great detail about this. He was Hrt for the Fbi. Springfields makes a fantastic base to build a badass 1911.

    You should have given that pistol a good going over before you made those modifications. SA makes some of the better 1911's at a reasonable price point but there Is always the chance of a lemon slipping by QC. I have three SA 1911's no Issues with any of them. And their customer service has a very good reputation. I would have sent that pistol back. I wish I could say the same for Sig Sauer! I had the pleasure of speaking to Jason Burton who builds some very nice custom 1911's and he highly recommends SA 1911's as a matter of fact he told me that the SA Mil Spec Is a great staring point for a custom 1911. I was a LE Firearms Instructor and Dept Armorer. 1911's are not assembled they are fitted! Great video by the way.

      Very interesting to know, and yea absolutely correct. Im our dept’s firearms instructor and armorer and I’ve got a few guys who carry a different variety of 1911’s for their duty gun, Colt, Kimber, Sig, etc. I carry a 320 half the time now but I always find myself carrying my 1911 periodically cause it’s just such a dang good shooting firearm.

      @@just_a_guy7753 I was with the NYPD. We had Issues with Sig Sauer going back to the early 90's! Sig was very unreceptive to correcting some of the problems we had with the P226. We finally dropped the 226 from our approved list of duty pistols. But the 365 Is now authorized as an Off Duty 9mm. I was able to carry a Colt 1911 as my duty weapon a few years before I retired,I love the 1911! Be safe my friend.

    The 1911 was designed specifically to feed 230 grain FMJ ammunition. It’s not your pistol that’s the issue, it’s the ammunition you’re trying to shoot through it. If you stick with hardball, you will have an extremely reliable pistol.

    tnx for the awesome vid! What rear sight did you put in? Looks like Harrison Design? Which height? Lastly, If it is a Harrison design rear , do I need to replace the front sight as well? Tnx for any pointers you have on this!

    • @just_a_guy7753

      The rear sight is a Heinie #366L Ultra Low Mount Ledge 1Dot Tritium Night Sight. I’m not sure what height it is to be honest, however it works fine with the front sight and is the same height- no need to replace the front. Hope this helps!

    Thanks for you honest review. Kind of had the same issues with mine. My issue was the slide was getting hung up on the disconnect. Nose dives where also a problem (185 critical defense, 185 bonded sabers, 230 v crown) magazine Wilson 10 round Wilson 47D didn’t help. Wilson 8rd ETM extra power mags seem to work better the shok buffer is probably causing the issue. Very disappoint in SA 😢

      @@just_a_guy7753 Yeah all Springfield slides etch the 962 or 502 it’s like their proof markings. Colt uses a “P” or PV near the trigger guard. Update I’m at like 800 rounds it’s getting smoother. I switched to a lighter oil BF CLP over ultma lube universal. Still 18.5lb spring. Stock mainspring.

    1911s are weird man, I had a Ruger SR and it didn’t make it through the first mag before the slide got jammed back. I guess the extractor got caught on the frame or some freakish phenomenon. But it was a brand new 1911, i shot 3 rounds and it was inoperable. Also…I think polishing the feed ramp is a necessary evil for any 1911 just because the rounds are huge.

    • @just_a_guy7753
      @just_a_guy7753  Рік тому

      Sig makes a good 1911, slightly cheaper or at this price point. Ruger makes a good one. Remington (if you can find them) makes a good one. Springfield has previously made a well reputable line of 1911’s I’ve heard, don’t have experience with any of their other models personally. This is my first dive into Springfield 1911’s and as the review showed, just wasn’t great. Their others may be fine, and like I said, it’s possible this one was just one that missed QC.

      Don't listen to this dude.frist he fucking up by making his own modifications.Soon as he saw the problem with the feed ramp he should have called SA and made them know about it.I have several SA 1911s going back to 1998 stainless steel champion model never had a problem with none of there 1911s but if I did I would DAM SHOWER WILL TAKE advantage of their LIFETIME WARRANTY before I start making my own MODIFICATIONS. So go on and get that SA 1911 and if you have any issues with it call them and tell them and send it back FOR FREE WARRANTY SERVICE

      Ditto on the Sigs but also look at a TRP or even a Dan Wesson Speciaist. If you have a "Staccato" budget, snatch up the Professional model (if you can find one) as these were built off the actual contract SA did for the FBI SRT.
      However, I still wouldn't rule out this model. It still runs well whether you make the mods shown in the vid or not. At least mine has run through classes, drills and department shoot days well. Which is why I carry it for work.

    Come on dude it's a production gun. You do know SA are in high demand. I was watching the high lights from SHOT SHOW 24 and the REP said that they have shut down the CUSTOM SHOP temporarily to keep up with production and warranty work. so that means they are REALLY busy busy. And you know shit gets that busy shit like this gets missed

    I recently had a Garrison. I didn't care for it, even with a trigger job from a very good shop. My Garrison was "sticky" feeling(racking) while doing a lot of ftf/fte which never stopped, hence why it's gone. Good mags didn't eliminate feeding/extracting issues either on mine.Those grips 🤮
    Lol, don't You love that? When they give You a hard time if it's clear or not? Is it going to shoot through the camera? 🙄🙄

      I personally have never heard of that. I’ve personally owned many 1911’s over the years and only one of them had an issue with one specific kind of Hornady defense ammo. All others have fed hollow point defense ammo flawlessly without any failures whatsoever over the years- aside from this one in the review. Just my milage.

  • @vincedee6607

    Why wouldn't you send that back to SA. They probably would have sent you a new gun. The feed ramp and the terrible number engraving is unacceptable in any firearm.

    • @johnv1984jvd
      @johnv1984jvd Рік тому

      I have the same pistol and the engraving is in the same spot. This pistol is my first exposure to 1911’s and I’ve dealt with some defense ammo issues. Mainly failed to feed. I wasn’t sure if that was the case with the majority of 1911’s or not. It’s very finicky with ammo.

      This is similar to the TRP or the Pro model. I believe SA does it supposedly to keep the slide and frame together during assembly for fitment though I'm sure the Operator isn't really fitted at all.
