You're standing right in front of my childhood home with the big porch. Living in Arizona now but I was able to take pictures of old home on my way to O'hare Airport moving south. Only memories now.
Hi! I am very sorry to learn that your former home is gone. When I recorded this video, I could just feel the years of life that the neighborhood had seen. While the may have been erased, I was at least able to preserve a fraction of those memories. Thank-You very much for viewing and commenting!
I lived on the street from 1989 - 1999; my parents sold the house (135 Garden) in 2004. Crazy to see those images I haven't seen in over 20 years. Thanks for capturing this.
I was upset when I went through your old neighborhood and saw the homesstanding empty. Airport yes! but build it down in Peotone. In a few more years, Chicago is going come around again looking for a new slice of Bensenville. Thank-You very much for viewing and commenting.
@ipfeldspar Thanks for showing 128 Garden, the address where I grew up between 1952 and 1969. That is a different house than the one I grew up in as my old house burned or was removed several years ago, but it still brings back memories.
That's so crazy man. I get why it happened, but I just can't even begin to imagine my home town being completely turned into a flat grassy field. Generations lived in those homes, some probably their entire lives, all physically erased completely. It was inevitable as this area was very old and undesirable to potential buyers due to the noise from O'Hare's jets taking off and landing, but it's still surreal to see this video and know now it's all entirely gone.
Thank you for watching. I do have some more videos... Look for "O'Hare erases Bensenville." Also, if you search for Bensenville, within my channel, you will find over a dozen I did in town. Most are rail fan videos but you can see the devastation in the background. I hope to be up there soon as the new rail viaduct, over Irving Park Road, is almost ready to open.
Roughly everything North of the railyard (Green Street is the Southern boundry for the tracks), and East of York. I have a bit of the Irving Park Rd area on one of my vids).
You are very welcome. I think I can identify with you as the family farm of my grand parents, was ripped out, and is now a gravel pit. However, as long as we still have the memories, our homes will always exist!
Oh, I have been there before. I live in Bensenville, and there is only one person that live on one block. I wonder how scary it is to live there right now. Also, I had about three friends that left due to the expansion. Now it seems like they are not going to use it for the airport. But, I guess you can say our little Village of Bensenville with it's Music in the Park and Fireworks at Redmond cannot withstand the City of Chicago. Also, it looks like they've put up a new bridge at Irving Park.
I somewhat agree but I'll still use this analogy. Chicago is doing the equivalent of trying to make a Volkswagen larger for additional seating. It can be done but it would be more cost effective to start from scratch. No matter how much land the city buys in Bensnville it won't be enough. For the same money, Peotone could have been completed by now. Ironically, the folks that got moved got their houses bought out at the high end of the real estate cycle. I hope they spent the money wisely.
If it was east of York, then it got leveled. Irving Park Road was moved by the City of Chicago for the airport expansion. I do remember several large residential buildings that were torn down for the airport....
@@ladygoffin840 I lived in Meigs court, closest to the tracks, from 1965-1976 townhome area, glad we left because it was becoming a bad area for crime nearer to Irving. (Sunset Court, Roosevelt, O'hare, Midway and Meigs. But lots of GREAT memories (plane noise was intolerable though)...our unit was new when moved in, in the 60's
I never knew those street names. I was east of York Road and south of Irving Park Road. I did several videos and I cannot make the distinction in my memory. Sorry. If you find an old B-ville map you should be able to work it out. Thank-You for viewing and commenting!!!
I was in the apt.complex on O'hare court when I was a very young boy, went to Tioga school for k-1st grade before moving. We used to play in cornfield behind apts, remember my mom telling me someone murdered someone else and dumped body in cornfield. Must have been last 60's. Some reason I remember the area back there very well.
Although I was 2-3 years old when all of this was happening, I feel bad for the people that something they once called home in this video is now nothing but runway’s. Hell, same thing even happened to Angry Grandpa with Trailwood back in 2011-12.
Bensenville, like Berkeley, is turning into the "Incredible Shrinking Town." The latest, is that an unincorporated sub division might get bought up (Route 83 & Grand). With O'Hare taking land on the east, and Corp speculators playing to the west, I have to wonder what the town would look like in another fifteen years? Hopefully, the added value of the real estate will provide for a good residential suburban life! Thank-You for viewing and commenting....!!!
Chicago has deep pockets because it has the highest taxes. Instead of a bigger airport that takes up more ground space, GPS guided personal air vehicles and some transcontinental separated high-speed passenger rail lines would be a more reasonable solution to transportation needs. The airport and large aircraft are not a one size fits all solution for moving people.
Just so we all know all of these homes were legally BOUGHT by the City of Chicago NOT Eminent Domain for more than their Fair Market Value so who would not sell and make a profit for more than they ever could. Keep in mind this area had horrible airport noise even beforehand and had the highest crime rate in Bensenville they should have been happy to get rid of it and not fight the City of Chicago for years over their demolition I used to drive through here on my way to work it was quite surreal.
It's for the good of our future. Sometimes for the good of others you have to sacrifice a little. Bigger airports serves many ppl, helps international trade and business, gives ppl jobs. All in all makes things more efficient for a better economy. Not only ppl go through the airport but also alot of merchandise and trade. $$$ that keeps business open.
Yes and no. Expansion is very important. However, the City of Chicago did not want to lose their monopoly on air travel in Chicago. That is why they chose to enlarge O'Hare despite the proposed Peotone Airport. Peotone will eventually become the big airport and Chicago's investment at O'Hare, while not exactly wasteful, the money would be better spent on a much larger airport.
They just keep pushing the dirt around. I was up there, last week, and there is a dirt mountain along York street where they had heavy equipment digging at the top. Each unit had to have its own aviation warning flag!
Who cares! Tear down! This recession already destroyed everything else. How can you sell a house for $110,000.00 when a couple of years ago it was worth $400,000.00? Tear them all down! By the way, what the hell is O'Hare expanding for? Like that'll do any good for anything! Rest n peace Bensenville.

I lived at 115 N Garden St. many happy childhood memories. 20 years.
I hope you have many photos to help your memories. Thank-You for viewing and commenting!!!
This is terrible. My grandparents live in bensenville on West Green Street. Thank you for sharing this.

I live in Bensenville. You should do an updated video to show how overgrown the yards and shrubs are now!

I drove through one of those neighborhoods today, its like a ghost town!

how much of bensenville is gettin torn down? i got family livin on marshall road
Does anyone know what happened to the Hamilton Townhomes off of Irving and Hamilton?
If it was east of York, then it got leveled. Irving Park Road was moved by the City of Chicago for the airport expansion. I do remember several large residential buildings that were torn down for the airport....

What is the area, by street names ? Please

Agreed. It is still kind of weird to regularly see Chicago Fire Department trucks on York Road.
Were you in the houses, or the apartment complex/

@CrazyChrisBelmont97 I lived at 128 Garden from 1952-1967. I believe a retired couple named Christiansen lived at 136 when I was there.
I still live in bensenville to this day
I strongly feel that Bensenville should exploit its location next to O'Hare and go long and deep as to revenue extraction.
ipfeldspar, if you are responding to me, then yes, i moved out because my mom wanted to move to carol stream because her co-workers lived there.
I am pro-houses-Bensenville, but in a odd sort of way, YES, the perfect setting for some sort of shoot-em-up!
I used to live along greenlawn ave. from 1989-1990
Yes, that was the question. This would make you one of the "lucky" ones. You left by choice, not because of the expansion.
It’s still creepy. 😢😢😢
Yup! I was nervous being back there and filming. Everybody had moved except for one family.
I sold my place to the city i had a fire in the house i lived in that neighborhood the fire was started by bad wires
Still sad to see those houses gone!

I hope that means you got out because you wanted to and not because you would have been forced out.
this is not bensenville when you think about Its now Chicago since they bought all the property
