Ironically, they're talking about how cheap it is to make, but "Custom 3D printed picture frame hand-built & painted by Neil Patrick Harris" sounds like the most expensive frame I've ever heard of.
And truly, from a business perspective, 87 "shop days" of labor, overhead, design work, overnight shipping, etc would add up to a pretty sturdy bill. They're most definitely not just $300 frames. But a very cool project, executed well.
I went to high school with Neil back in Albuquerque and it weird to see him hanging out with my favorite 3D printing youtuber 30 something years later. Love the collaboration! Hope y'all do more!
@@TheTurbineEngineer actually never seen that show but seeing him in TV shows in general is pretty normal since he was doing TV all the way back in high school too. I am glad he continues to be successful and living a good life. Hollywood isn't always so kind to child actors.

That's an astounding amount of effort! Part of what makes this project really cool is that NPH has the resources to simply hire out this whole job, but he saved the really icky park for himself (and the kiddos) --all that sanding and painting. Thanks for sharing!
Such an insane project and you guys are absolutely right it's an INCREDIBLE skill to break apart a finished project into smaller parts that assemble in a logical, seamless manner. I wouldn't know where to even start. I reckon a full sheet CNC is in your future, you guys are gonna have a blast ;)
These videos with Neil are awesome you can tell everyone involved is truly having a lot of fun. I think it’s so cool he’s part of this community of folks you have here Joel - congrats to you and huge props to Neil as well!
So trippy man. Good on NPH putting his energy into creative maker pursuits, learning PS and 3d printing. I think more people in the public eye should be pursuing stuff ... publicly? I think a lot of people are just wasting their lives not creating anything when they should be. Everyone should be creating stuff, it's soulfoodstuffs.
That was great. and I also liked seeing NPH just as a fellow parent doing parenting stuff. 3d Printing is such a boon to set design, or renovation for antiques.
The fun part of this is, if these are still around in like 200 years, they will actually be antiques AND made by a famous person (And his team), Like an actor from the time of 2D-movies made these with a 3D-printer (Can you believe they only had 3 dimensional printers back then?), and they made it to look like an "antique" which was considered antique back in their days, but now they really are and they have a really cool backstory to it
"I think one of the import things that we're going to showcase here, is" how friggin' awesome NPH is! He's just so much fun and including his kids in this is just great!
This was incredible. On the one hand, you have the epic project, and some old-school Joel enthusiasm for making the project just go, coupled with Neil's genuine amazement of what's happening. On the other hand, you have Neil's long experience of how to tell a story on camera really showing through, his professional awareness of what's visible, what isn't, when to completely ignore the camera and when to look straight at it. Together, they fight crime! No, but seriously, this video let both Niel and Joel really play to their respective strengths and the result is thoroughly engaging and entertaining.
So many celebrities have their house decorated by designers and the celebrity adds basically nothing. But with NPH you can tell he did it himself. Sure it's possible he didn't design everything himself but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. Niel is such an interesting person and I love these crossovers.
The frames turned out awesome! You two actually compliment each other really well in videos, your personalities work great together. Can't wait to see what else you and Neil collab on.
Those turned out awesome! I would have highly recommended getting some rottenstone to add into the nooks and crannies of the frames. It's a sort of antiquing dust and is what gives frames that truly "old" look. Dust the rottenstone on with a soft brush, blow out the extra, and boom! Antiquification! (That's totally a word that I didn't just make up.)

it simply does not get more wholesome than this. this is what youtube was created for.
Legendary I love the collaborations, the interaction, and the frames (especially when viewed in full, as they would be seen in real life) look awesome. I don't think I've stopped smiling since the video started.
Wow, fantastic project. The frame really turned out amazingly well! NPH, Joel, and Garret and Chelsey... all so much talent!! Thanks for walking through this project, it was really nice getting to see a glimpse into such a large effort and the characters behind it. :)
So amazing that 3d printing lead you to working with and becoming friends with the one and only Dr. Horrible! Always love your videos, you're the one who convinced me to get into to 3d printing. I just recently got my second printer!
This is pretty damn awesome. I both miss and don't miss putting together large 3d prints like this. So much sanding and work. The end result though always makes it worth it. 👌 💯
Cool project. Applying gold leaf to frames like these was my day job for more than a decade. Even a handcarved wooden frame would be much faster to make than 3d printing though. The stuff we made for museums will literally still be in there 200 years from now, because we use the same materials and techniques as the originals. That's the value of it I guess, not just how it looks.
I haven't watched the video yet, but the time compared should be mostly artist time. How long it takes to print shouldn't matter that much as printer time is cheap. I don't know yet how they modeled it (digital sculpting or modeling), but ornaments digitally can be pretty fastly done.
True, old school is so much better sometimes. But to offer a different perspective… how many people can make frames and apply gold leaf to them? The average Joe (me) would be daunted by that task that you did. But 3D printing? I CAN hit return. 🤣
This, coupled with a good handheld 3D scanner, would be invaluable for repairing frames like this. You could scan the exact topography of the broken frame and craft a piece that will fit exactly :D
First off-- so much fun being along for the ride! One philosophical point, us-all out here are not likely to "mix" with the "them" who might actually be in the house. Second point of interest: In a small town court house, a prominent painting of a former law maker was appraised. The painting was of minor interest but the frame-- larger than what I see in the video (maybe 7' x 4') but far simpler--- valued at $150,000 (this was in the 1980s-- the frame was from the late 1800s)! Larger but not nearly as elaborate.
You guys together on screen are such a fantastic pair, the humor and enjoyment is all so natural and great! This is feel good TV right here, and the results of this project are stunning! Awesome stuff, can't wait for more collaborations in the future, thanks for all you do!
An old scale modelling trick I have used for years is to use the sawdust from sanding and LITTLE amount of glue mixed togather, which will make filler that is the same consistency as the parts you are filling.
Cool watching a super nice guy hang out with another super nice guy... what a collab ! Cracked me up though when Neil said: "I sanded these"(Boy sanding in the background) "and i coated them" (Girl painting in the background)... 😂🤣
