    It's the best feeling when you're watching a tutorial and they say "this is what NOT to do" and it's something you always do. Means you're about to take a jump in skill. Thanks so much for this - very interesting and insightful. Bell-subbed

    Nice video thanks professor! Any tips for those of us who can only do like 5 thumbnails when the director wants 10 or more? I always feel like I'm being tortured by that method of planning & would prefer to start the design and move elements around later in the process

    I'm a Concept Artist working for a production company and I got very excited over your recommendation of using AirPano for reference. However, I looked at their website and they have noted all their images are under copy write. Commercial artists probably shouldn't use them for direct paint-overs and photo texturing, yeah?

    • @PhilsDesignCorner
      @PhilsDesignCorner  7 років тому +2

      That is a good question, I guess it depends how much you change the original image, and if your using just parts of it. Also, what will the final outcome be? Will anyone notice if you have multiple images all blended together, combined with paint??

    • @Ironprism
      @Ironprism 7 років тому

      I suppose it's fine if it's mostly getting painted over. Where would you draw the line? (Ex: A screenshot of a waterfall vid with a castle painted on top of it, some mountains added in the foreground and a different image for the sky. The whole of the waterfall is still there in this theoretical.) Not something I would ever do, but sometimes deadlines make me wonder about it. Always nice to get another pro opinion. Thanks!

      Well I grew up in Belgium for a couple years, had a dutch nanny, parents spoke Greek and French in the house....then English, had Spanish in high school, Im sure I screwed it up somehow by saying it wrong. Other than correcting my pronunciation...do you have anything else to say or questions regarding drawing environments or drawing?

      @@PhilsDesignCorner So my comment was a very brief summery of a legitimate constructive criticism and because you got back to me directly I shall give you the detailed full length explanation, no offence intended and I hope you consider it as constructive, rather than throwing it aside as insensitive of me or insulting.
      I stopped watching this video early and did not take in much in that you were tying to teach for two main reasons; the constant mispronunciation of Foliage and the verbal tick MKAY. As an auditory medium the clarity of instruction is very hinged upon the fact that your viewers can listen to what you have to say. Factors that distract make a video that could potentially be filled with wonderful educational content impossible to actually learn from. Clarity of voice is paramount If I am 1) unable to hear a too quiet voice or 2) music drowns out the voice 3) thick accent or speech pattern impedes understanding beyond an acceptable level 4) mispronunciation of a word repeated often 5) very annoying verbal ticks including but not limited too : MKAY, Ummm or uhhh. UMMMM is the worst offender 6) too many long pauses of dead silent air without even filler background music (starts making me work slower or fall asleep) 7) to many long diatribes or tangents and winding babbling unclear unfocused speeches.
      This is ASIDE from the ACTUAL CONTENT of the video. From an educational and artistic standpoint you could be a master, but if no one will be able to listen to what you actually have to say they are not learning! So yes it IS a LEGITIMATE concern for your viewers, and I'm not alone. I am willing to bet every comment of foliage was truly saying the same thing. Also a famous south Park character named Mr.Mackey constantly says the verbal tick "MKAY" and until you I thought it was only him. Every time you said MKAY I would think of this character and stop listening to you for a few seconds. You see how this is a legitimate criticism. I think this would have affected other viewers the same way.
      Now no one is perfect I try to edit out most of my annoying verbal ticks particularly UMMM for the reason that I know I am annoyed by this and I want people to watch my videos with as little annoyance as possible. We are all still learning on this crazy road of life and UA-cam content creation!
      The top 10 reasons I click off of and stop watching a UA-cam video (aside from I need to go somewhere else, am tired or have watched it before) In no particular order
      1) An annoying voice I or another person in the room 'can't stand'
      2) I legitimately can't understand what they are saying (accent, too fast, odd tone, too many tangents, etc.)
      3) Inaccurate and highly personally offensive content to my beliefs, knowledge and/or morals
      4) No talking at all (just text) particularly if there is not even background music (I mostly listen more than watch youtube videos while doing chores or making art/ other work voice is vital.)
      5) The persons art style is not one I can enjoy myself
      6) Mispronouncing a world that particularity irritates me and is repeated often
      7) Annoying repetitive verbal tick that takes me out of the content and causes frustration wost one of all being UMMMM
      8) Extremely poor video quality. Poor audio being the worst.
      9) Inaccurate educational content and high horse viewpoints (such as but not limited to; implying or saying one way is right while others are wrong, that there is a superior or inferior art style, that a medium is lesser, absolutes in art, that any art style is "not art", that any art medium used is "not real art", etc.) This must be very inaccurate or offensive to have me click off the video otherwise I just leave a comment with helpful corrections or tips. Such as if someone was using the wrong paper or layering mixed media in a structurally unsound order for better results, or commenting a good paper to use instead or a good digital brush, etc.
      10) Super slow speaking, boring long pauses of dead air without even any filler background music. This will make me start working slower or worse start falling asleep so I need to click off at that point.
      I will watch the whole video now and get back to you about the educational content itself as you requested. I will give a constructive criticism of it and include more of what you did right than any potential faults. To balance out this very criticism heavy comment.

      Very useful tips. I loved your examples and criticism of one point perspective and use of harsh horizontals and as you said 90 degree angles. All curves and rounded edges: YES! nature is curves and they are vital! I am often less happy with too many verticals unless it is a particular kind of forest or a cityscape. Learn the forms of the environment by studying reference. Thanks also for emphasizing the value of taking reference screenshots! Very useful tips! I do advise a bit more video editing to cut out awkward and unnecessary moments and doing voice over OVER the edited video but it's not major. (although this would allow the easy removal of verbal ticks as well!), Great examples of workable resources, artists to study and reference site. loved the examples and explanations of thumbnails, very actionable! exemplar focus on the fundamentals of composition and creating scenes in the correct environment while keeping composition paramount and not creating distracting forms BUT clumping forms together effectively. focus on the three elements: Foreground, mid ground and background was nicely emphasized and with very good examples. I now continue my research and practice of environments and landscapes (among other things). Best of luck in future videos, content creation and life in general!
