55 years in the hobby with the same layout. It started out as a 4x8 oval, and now is a 26’x 26’ empire.
WOW! Nice 👍👏! See, I’m a beginner and my birthday is nearing and a layout is what I want.
Your layout looks BEAUTIFUL! 👍👏
Advice to beginners: You may find you actually love your layout so when you build yours, be sure to allow for expansion. Keep everything level and solid. Right on cool you got it
Thank you. Patiance is also important. Im only a kid and learned that the hard way...
Another thing. Drill holes under the track for the switch wires before gluing it down. I learned THAT the hard way.
Excellent advice
Yes, I can only have a smaller layout, and I am planning on expanding everything later.
This is not just a hobby, it's an art form.
It is ,Ever since the first official steam locomotive has been created people have been modeling it and it has been an art for over a century
Benchwork - 2:20
Laying Track - 14:40
Control - 20:31
Structures - 24:33
Scenery - 29:10

Model Railroading is the Best therapy hands down.
Nice Video clip! Apologies for the intrusion, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you researched - Januke Henatalie Formula (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a great exclusive product for dominating DCC model railroads without the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend Sam after many years got cool success with it.
I'm researching diy railroad layouts and discovered a great website at Jareks hobby club (check it out on google)
Except when you get frustrated and break everything
Got to have a dog sitting there watching you do it. You know, someone to talk to.
Just wonderful, I've been looking for "best running n scale locomotives" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Piyaliyah Uncommunicative Preference - (do a search on google ) ? It is a good one of a kind product for discovering how to build a model train railroad easily without the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.
My dad, brother, and I recently got into the hobby that is model railroading. It’s awesome. We don’t really care if our engines have sound or smoke or anything, we just like the fun of it. We have N-scale, and our trains consist of a diesel train running a passenger train, courtesy of the Silver Streak Zephyr, and a steam freight train, courtesy of the Union Pacific Big Boy (which I got for my birthday) and 4 freight cars including a caboose that I recently purchased. Our strategy is to have 4 types of engines pulling 4 types of trains. My brother is covering the passenger trains, and I’m doing freight. We need now a steam locomotive to pull passengers and a diesel locomotive to pull freight. We’re really happy with what we have right now.
Just bought my first Lionel set I'm 47 years old and have always wanted to do this thank you for a great video
This video was done about 25 years ago. I had brought the DVD 10 years ago knowing it was an advert for a specific company, as it was plastered all over the magazine. I just liked the bit of tuition this video offered.
Here is a professional tip. Before you glue the track down, drill holes for the switch wires.
For Shortcuts:
Table/Benchwork 2:21
Track laying 14:42
Control 20:36
Structures 24:35
Scenery 29:10
Timelapse 48:36
Conclusion 48:58->49:35

If you have the room, time and money to do a railroad, the experience is like nothing else. The people we met while researching and buying our equipment and supplies were a unique bunch. Artists all and passionate especially for their own work. From the guy who scratch built everything except the locos to the guy who made a hump yard so complex, he didn't have room for scenery. The challenges of any layout you decide on can keep you engaged (and possibly broke) for years. The world is yours to create or replicate and I'll guess you'll want to do both at some time in the hobby.
It’s been my dream to have one of these Model Railroads for years
What the heck! Bert Gummer playing Mr Rogers was the last thing I expected…
This isn’t a hobby, it’s a type of therapy! Just watching this calms me, really wish I had space for one though
Hi there! As I commented above, there's this channel called Central Los Andes - not popular yet, BTW - that I found thanks to YT algorithm, amazingly realistic in my opinion, and built on a really small shelf: ua-cam.com/channels/BdiygvjOVlLFVoFz_E5dYw.htmlvideos Hope this can be useful.
This is old school. I remember buying VHS tapes like this in the 80's. Of coarse I was stupid and didn't keep them.
At this point, this video is childhood nostalgia for me
model railroading takes my sadness and lonelyness away i can finally have peace and enjoy a miniature world watch trains roll by
Timeless. The hobby just keeps getting better 👍🏼
What I agree with and what I disagree with.
Agree:
The scenery advice is good. I'm gonna try this technique for my grass and mountains. For those of you wondering, use foam as depicted here. Bare wood will make too much noise.
Disagree:
Don't use bare Bachmann EZ-track. If you use it at all (it is easier than cork) add ballast. The same is true for Atlas True-Track, Kato Unitrack, and Life-Like Power-Loc Track. Additionally, make the most out of your space. Don't waste so much space. Finally, make a track plan that has turnouts, letting people get to the world outside your table. Don't lock it in. Obviously, you wouldn't run the trains off the edge, bit simply having the track improves the look. Oh, add a yard and siding too.
All in all, great video, great tips. Follow them, but don't rely on them.
*Note: I can't say an opinion on the bench work as I have not used this plan for my own layout.
Families that play together stay together, excellent video! Thank you.
Pro-tip, you can replace the non-terminal rerailer with an E-Z Track Crossing Gate. Also, I suggest adding yellow road marking down the center of Main Street for added realism.
Great tutorial video but im sorry the guys facial expressions had me in stitches 😂
Having Burt Gummer narrate/host this makes this much more entertaining
I am glad I learnt english.
Thank you for uploading.
I remember watching this when I bought this set! It was my first set, and I still have it ever since I was 4! Such memories!
Thank You very much, it's a very nice presentation. God Bless You.
Very great and complete video about the different aspects of the hobby.
Model Railroading isn't just a hobby , no sir... IT'S A WAY OF LIFE! :-)
This video resonates pureness and happy afternoons and I love it
Great video! I’m a beginner and this is just what I needed. Thanks again
I have a different scale of model railroad and I planning on building a layout soon this video is a huge help for advice , Thank you !
I never thought Burt Gummer would teach me to build a model railroad.
Greatest hobby there is. Thanks for the great ideas. Joe
Great video and thank you. I know I'll do all the work but I know my son will enjoy this as much as I do.
Like, shows you from start to finished.
Nice, this hobby is so great, thanks for sharing this🙏🏻🚂👋🌟👌😊
I just built the table for my first train platform. I fastened the two leg assemblies 64" apart. The length of the angle braces (1/4 x 1-1/4 molding) is described as 48" long in the video, but I had to make the length of the angle braces about 70" to fit properly between the leg assemblies. Thanks for a great plan.
Yes, the 48 inch call is wrong
Great to see you Mr Gross . Still love watching Family Ties . Good 👍 to see you again.
Impressive.. I'm glad I'm part of this family. 🤩👍😇
Hey that's Michael Gross! Tremors represent!
hell yea.lol
Subparanon ✅👍🏻👍🏻🎉
watch out Mike..there"s a giant worm behind you
Thanks!! I have had trouble getting my landscapes to look authentic!!
This is a good beginners video
thanks for inspiring me to keep on railroading
This is a great video. A+!
this was my bible in 2013 when I did my first model railroad. Can't thank this video enough for all the information I've gotten from it.
Thank you your video was very educational!!
Washers are pressed , so one face flat , the other face curved at edge . Curved face next to nut . Performs and looks better ! . Panel pins used could make a table to support the house ? . 😮😊❤ Clear , concise guide to banging up a beautiful layout. Thanks guys. Dave
Thank you for your very informative video.
Pro tip: the best possible adhesive (and cheapest) for the poly styrene insulation boards is acrylic latex paint. Home box stores often have a return or damaged section for next to no cost. The paint only needs to be applied to one side and is a better bond than the best adhesives in the store. Good luck!
Had no idea this video was Russian, check the description!

This is a bout model trains not about a cat
that turorial was well done and very instructional. Makes me want to build another 4x8 sheet, but this time using the smaller grade below HO. I just thing you can put a lot more detail and track with a smaller scale train. I like the ease of working with the raises tracks, but I set up my tracks on the flat sections of track and simply nailed them down with very small crushed gravel supporting the trackway. On my set up I also utilized 8 switch tracks and about a total of eight track kill switches in order to stop the train at a dead end. I also built a nice trestled bridge about 20 " long, modeling the bridge after a real wooden trestle I saw in a photo, I weathered it as well. One of my trains entered and excited a mountain tunnel in a corner of the track, the tunnel took up the whole back of the board with a mountain built around it. My last feature was a small pond under the trestle next to it a workers hut with a small boat dock from it to into the water. I had a row boat tied up to the dock. It took me a long time to build the set and I got a kick out of weathering the engines and boxcars behind it. I'm fascinating by roundhouses so the next set up I built I want to include a working round house, working streetlights and functional crossings look cool as well. Nice job on this and nice job narrating Mr. Gross.
Helpful hint... while marking the foam for track, scenery, buildings, vehicles and people is very useful and helpful, I like to take photographs as well. Often objects are close to the same size or shape and can accidentally be misplaced. A picture is indeed worth a 1000 words.
Really good to watch...even better to do!
Building train layout.
Good job my friend.
My layout is N scale.
Atlas and Bachmann tracks, code 80.
Manual and remote switch.
Good luck with you hobby.
Very fun video thanks!!!
I followed the steps and ended up with a bird house.
zoltzer must be good looking bird house 😂
Next time get bird house plans and see if you end up with a railroad.
Lmao
Funny made me laugh
OMG these comments crack me up
So informative!! Thanks for this
Every summer I would get to stay with my Papa and Nana Goodrich in Hollister, California for two weeks! And when I was a teenager I stayed for two years! The steam train would roll by their house every day. I’d be on the Victorian house and wave at the conductor and engineer and they’d wave back. I miss those lazy summer days, I’ve loved trains ever since.
Fantastic video full of great information to get started.
I watched the whole video through thanks for this wonderful experience as I had gotten this set yesterday
Of course I had a car player but it’s pretty much crushed in storage since we moved
they make this look so easy
It was.
@@ashevilletrainman6989 not easy for beginners that are just starting model railroading
A person, yes it is, you just need to be patient and take your time.
Great instructional video. Keep it up
I had this video on a disk when I was 9 years old. I lost the disk but I'm so glad I found the video.
Great film I want to build another model, now
I love the train table
This is so innocent. I love it.
Excellent video. I used it to build the platform/table and very pleased with the outcome. One comment, the four 4' - 1/4" x 1 1/2" molding for the cross bars on the legs need to be much longer then 48". I bought 8' pieces and cut them down to about 65".
I'm sitting here with 4 - 48" pieces, seeing the same thing. 8' - 32" does not equal 48"
the most wholesome video on the internet
Congratulations ! Very good !
A good beginning tutorial for me. The builder made it look so easy when all the steps were broken down and made manageable. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Thanks for sharing.
Be nice of them to tell OR show the viewer HOW to set the electrical up for the tracks, where the wiring goes and how to make sure it is working... this was a Terrain Building video, not a beginners model video
Elephant gives me indigestion that's why I eat apples. But only one bite at a time
thank you brothers for this info
2020 anyone?
Ye sadly the end of the world is here and I can't do this
Almost 2021 for me

Yep doing some research, me and my dad are going to build one. It used to be his hobby when he was young and he want's to start again so I said to him i'd help him.
Nice video .Enjoy it thanks.
Hi guys I’m just getting into the hobby a great video it has helped me get some great ideas I’ve been looking for what’s an average amount people spend monthly on there hobbies
Whatever fits your budget
When I was a kid I had an HO scale train track I loved. As an adult I have no room for a lay out in my small home. So I'm taking a two by four that maxes out at 72 inches and making a diorama. I've already purchased a used ho scale steam engine ( Big B&O engine, all black ) and pulled the decals off it. I can't decide what coaches to put behind it, I'm going for an aesthetic not from any time period or even a historically accurate one.
Make it a track laying diorama.
A couple of flat beds with sleepers and a couple with tracks.
A bunch of chinese laying the tracks in front of the engine.
@@TraitorFelon.14.3 I've actually seen such a diorama at a railway museum with a O Scale setup.
When I was a kid, the Lionel Trans were the only thing in my life. Now all I can do is I watch the videos
I've dreamed of collecting them
Great video!
It was really a long video, and I like it
Cool!
only thing i changed was the gravel plant. i used a lumber mill
Great video Burt.
Looks very informative. My son would love to do this with me, I’m thinking. I’m subscribed.

Great video ! HC Treintje Belgium.
great video !!
I find this video very helpful and slightly corny.
54:45 the worlds greatest hobby
Reminds me of my dad
Cool dad
His railroad workers waved at you. Mine shot at you with rock salt if you were close enough to wave at em. I miss the 80's.
Their is something better than making model railway’s for standard gauge engines, it is making model railways with narrow gauge engines. 😉👌
Great video. And I realize it's for beginners. But I only wish they would have shown how to use cork roadbed instead of E-Z Track. That would be nice to learn right off the bat.
yeah
and maybe on lighting buildings and stuff
I have watched a few videos today and this is by far the WORST one for beginners!!! Even I knew more than this video shares before watching videos, YIKES!
HOW DARE YOU EZ TRACK IS THE BEST BECAUSE IT IS EASY TO PUT TOGETHER!
@@cooliotrainlover1213Kato Unitrack is better.
They now make lock washers for carriage bolts that have claws on them that are pushed into the wood or other material to lock the head of the carriage bolt in place. Also, for the landscape, you can use broken drop-ceiling tiles to make quick cliffs.
Great information, thanks!
this is great help
This film should teach me how to build a detailed Lionel O Gauge layout.
