CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Driving to Vegas in a convertible, Duke (Johnny Depp) and Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) start to hallucinate when their drugs begin to take hold.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Twelve Monkeys, The Fisher King) directed this colorful, stylized, pseudo-psychedelic $21-million adaptation of the 1971 Hunter S. Thompson classic, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey into the Heart of the American Dream, about stoned sportswriter Raoul Duke, Thompson's alter ego, on a wild drug-crazed road trip, a paranoid plummet into the belly of the beast, with his pal, lawyer Oscar Zeta Acosta. Originally serialized in Rolling Stone (November 1971), the book catapulted Thompson headfirst toward the Kerouac-Mailer-Capote pantheon and jump-started the entire movement of "gonzo journalism." Carrying a suitcase of drugs, Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp with shaved pate) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) drive a red convertible across the Mojave from L.A. to Vegas, where Duke has an assignment to cover the Mint 400 desert motorcycle race. As the drugs kick in, Duke ventures into voiceover, filling in the blank spots and narrative gaps. "This is not a good town for psychedelic drugs," says Duke, but even so, they consume vast quantities, eventually escalating to ether. Duke notes that with ether "you can actually watch yourself behaving this terrible way, but you can't control it." The two trash their hotel room, and Gonzo goes back to L.A. Thinking the hotel room holocaust will lead to an arrest, Duke begins a drive back to L.A., but after an odd encounter with a highway patrolman (Gary Busey) and a telephone conversation with Gonzo, he returns to Vegas to cover the District Attorney Convention on Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs in the glitzy Flamingo Hotel. This time the drugged-out duo trash their Flamingo room. The crazed carnival atmosphere segues into a carney casino, Bazooko's Circus, where a barker (Penn Jillette) spiels amid aerialists, clowns, and a rotating carousel bar. Gonzo worries over runaway teen Lucy (Christina Ricci), who paints portraits of Barbra Streisand. Soon the hallucinations begin: Duke sees Gonzo transmogrify into a demon with breasts on its back, and an acid vision of a Vegas bar features large legit lounge lizards (courtesy of monster makeup man Rob Bottin). Flashbacks depicting Duke's intro to the drug scene jump back to love-Haight relationships in San Francisco's Summer of Love. Cameos and guest stars include Mark Harmon, Cameron Diaz, Flea, Lyle Lovett, Harry Dean Stanton, Ellen Barkin, Tobey Maguire, and Hunter S. Thompson himself. The film features a Geffen Records soundtrack mixing rock of the period with Vegas lounge tunes. Over the years, various script adaptations came and went as did numerous talents; people connected with past efforts to film Thompson's book include Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, and writer-director Alex Cox. Shown in competition at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.

I watched the movie two times, then I read the book, then I watched it again. Almost every word that's said in the movie is exactly how it is in the book. One of the best adaptations ever.
I could tell from the movie that I was going to like the book because the funniest part by far is the narration, which is taken verbatim from the book.
To plan for the role Depp lived with Thompson for months. When they filmed the movie most of the clothes worn by Depp were loaned to him by Thompson. I love it!
“YOU SAY SOMTING”…😂
I'm Jack Trainspotting Is also perfect adaptation
I love the book, the movie helps me picture it better
"I feel a bit lightheaded"
"AHHHHH"
"Maybe you should drive"
😂😂😂😂😂
@raoul Oh, you’ve seen the film too? Thanks that you repeat some sentences from it for the stupid ones who couldn’t remember 🤦♂️
@@dieterbleimling2512why u take a yt comment so personally 😂
One of the best intro scenes of all time in my opinion. “We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold.”
"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers, also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether, two dozen amyls.....and a roll of toilet paper"
Straight from the book
I feel a bit light-headed
“U SAY SOMETHING”
It opens with this lol
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high-powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

I’ve always been amazed at how flawless Depp was able to become Hunter Thompson. I heard Depp spent a few months hanging out with Thompson in order to prepare for the role. I love Thompson’s speech pattern.
The two were good friends for a pretty long time
i just wish he wasn’t into creating child snuff films :( otherwise hunter thompson would be pretty cool!
Depp also went to Hunter S Thompson funeral and bought his property he owned before he died in aspen
@@_easnem_And paid an absurd amount of money for the rights to fire his ashes out of a cannon, but I feel like that's a well-known one.
One of Depp's best roles
Ruined by mush mouth Del Toro
moncorp1 Inc no del toro is great
Del Toro is awesome in this.
This film is a masterpiece and has nothing to do with plot
When Hunter S. Thomson died (suicide) Johnny Depp fulfilled Thompson's will, that was having his ashes shot into the stratosphere from a giant cannon. Perhaps he's possibly the reason Depp seems a bit cuckoo himself.
I highly, highly recommended reading the novel as well. I laughed even harder reading the book! The way he uses words and phrases and juxtaposition...too effing funny
neo robertson absolutely HST bread and butter
I tried reading the novel while on a light dose of lsd. I could barely get through a paragraph without bursting into laughter.
@@dannyp2970 what does lsd do to you? Is it trippy or euphoric? All I've ever done is mix booze and oxy. Never even smoked dope so I have no frame of reference.
And yes if you have a good trip there is plenty of euphoria, and it is extremely trippy, if you have never tried it, dont take more that one dose for your first time, if you are too worried, try half a tab at night when everyone else has gone to bed, than kick back with some chill music and let you mind drift off into the cosmos.
Atypical How do you do oxy but never weed haha
"No point in mentioning these bats the poor basterd would see them soon enough". lol
Depp gets a lot of accolades for his role, and rightly so, but Benicio Del Toro is freaking phenomenal as Oscar Zeta Acosta (Dr. Gonzo)
It was way more tough than HST since Johnny Depp befriended him and could emulate his mannerisms.
Acosta disappeared in Mexico under mysterious circumstances and noone knows what happened to him
As your attorney I advise you to watch this clip again...and you'll need the cocaine

@@crazykellywfo4240 I Wanna hear ONE TOKE!!!!!!!!
I love it when Dr Gonzo beautifully murders one toke over the line😂.
That bit always makes me laugh!
One toke you poor fool…
One toke maaan
When I turned 21, I replicated the contents of that case.
I think I aged 20 more years when I was done.
Ahaha epic
Dave Christan brief case with the drugs perhaps?
please tell me where you got the ether and amyls
Jeff Brehove you can order diethyl ether online. And you can find amyls at sex shops most of the time
good to know
Raoul Duke: We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.
I couldn't agree more! :)
Talk about being prepared
Coy Chimera Yeah man. As Duke says 'when your locked into a serious drug collection the idea is to push it as far as you can' I subscribe to that :)
Whatever happened to sharing?????
Petra Daub I'll share you my enlightened comments and my time over the journey. :)
drug collections is hard i always use them up before getting a new one
As a person who lives in Barstow I can confirm this is what the edge looks like
We’re your friends, we’re not like the others man, really!
Stockton too classy for ya?
the west is the best
Its bat country??
You know a movie is going to be epic when the first spoken line of the entire film is "We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold."
Yes. You wrote this 10 years ago. How is your life now?
"And the sky was full of what looked like huge bats" is my favourite part
One of the craziest and funniest movies I've ever seen
Back when Burning Man was still cool, this is how every one of my trips out there started. I miss the 90's.
Steve Mattos nothing is cool anymore.
Burning Man has always been lame and gay...
@@James_T_Kirk_1701 Shut up man same goes for you.

Benicio Del Toro is so underrated
You could say, they are roadtrippin'
Watched and listened to this as I'm crossing the same desert, somewhere around Barstow, on my way to Vegas
First time I saw this movie I was absolutely stoned out of my mind. It made it so much better.
😓😢
Same with me. A cult favourite of mine. Only someone as creative as Terry Gilliam could have adapted it to screen. I love the book too. Thompson's writing style is so poetic and disturbingly hilarious
may just be my favorite movie scene of all time.
The book is off the hook and the film is beyond a cult classic!
The assistant at my local pharmacy dressed as hunter Thompson for Halloween he had the shirts the hat the cigarette holder he was even doing the bouncy knee walk! I took one look at him and said Hunter Thompson! Sadly the rest of the staff there had no clue who he was amongst the assorted Ken dolls and Spidermen 😢 but he was happy I got it in one, even better the thought of hunter loose in a pharmacy 😊😅 really made my day.
I just love how when Duke opens the trunk sounds like a beast growl, as if the drugs are the beasts
I’ve seen this movie hundreds of times and NEVER noticed that!
This film along with Brazil (1985) & Monty Python And The Holy Grail (1974) have got to be my TOP favorite Terry Gilliam films.
Central Services sir...
hands down my favorite movie of all time. and I do mean that ALL TIME. there are dozens of quotes from this film that me and my buddies throw back and forth. never read the book im sure its wayyyy better then the movie but shit man watching two people take a drug adventure to the fucking limits is great and very entertaining to watch lol. in my opinion the best cult classic movie
If you like the movie, you'll probably love the book. I also recommend 'The great shark hunt' for more HST adventures.
How can you consider it your favourite movie of all time and not even be curious enough about the book to read it?
Read the book dude. It's not just meaningless, endless filler words made up out of nowhere by some pretentious novel writer. Virtually every word from the movie is a direct quote from the book.
@Richard’s Testicle Head i found an audio book of it, and the rum diaries. my assumptions were correct. the books are better. glad i didn't disappoint ^^
you can just go to vegas and get a rental convertible and as much weed and alcohol as you can tolerate... i don't think anyone knows this yet.
literally one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
This is probably one of the best roles for both of them , they need to work together more
"No point mentioning these bats I thought... The poor bastard would see them soon enough!" Gotta love Fear and Loathing
Man we still feel pain, we're just committed to what we do and give this life 100%.
I love the cinematography in this film.
"..the tendency is to push it as far as you can."
To think that a lot of this shit probably actually happened to hunter s Thompson is hilarious
Hunter Thompson one of my influences as an amateur writer and a person in general. Made a playlist about 2 years ago, went 3 days with no sleep. Started with the intro: 10 Benzedrex inhalers, box of Jet Alert, bottle of tequila and ready to roll...
R.I.P. Hunter and Oscar
This movie made me want to become an actor. One of the great movies to watch with aspiring actors/actresses unbelievable performances by Depp and Deltoro.
An actor? It made me want to do drugs lol
I love that they just happened to have a fly swatter in the trunk.
This movie was something else, and the few minutes cued the audience into what they were getting into!
"Poor bastard will be seeing them soon enough." Hahaha
this is film is a rarity..it is utterly brilliant.your perception of it changes with every watch.quite incredible and its the only film ive watched that has had that effect on me.
Holy Jesus what are these god damn animals!?
"Why is the rum gone?" …. is a question Johnny Depp won't be needing to ask in THIS movie!
“Wait til you see them god damn bats, man...”
Jesus! What are these god damn animals?!
Favorite part
Never gets old. ;)

best movie ever made in tribute to gonzo
Fear and Loathing in Dublin: "We were somewhere around O'Connell street, on the edge of the Liffey, when the gear began to take hold..."
One of the funniest comments I've ever read.
God this is a good movie... they did such a good job of capturing the way the book felt. Admittedly, the book was VERY straight-forward and no-bullshit.
Bat country was dimensional overspill, one slice of psychedelic awesomeness that escaped from the twisted dimension that is called 'The Unusual Thief'...
wait what?

They don't make movies with this kind of energy anymore.
I AM WATHCING THIS ON LSD RIGHT NOW
Hope you made it lol
HOW WAS IT¿
@@stonerman15 The whole movie is like filmed by even drowning the cameras themselves in pure acid for some minutes before each shot. There might be apparently no difference, as the distortion inside your brain is synchronized with the one from the film. But don't be fooled, there is a difference, and your brain might end up burnt if you try to do this. Maybe that was the OP's fate... not every mortal should be playing with this, few of them can, even fewer come back unscathed.
Why? Movie’s already on drugs
The best opening to any film.
And no one looked at Barstow the same way again…If Barstow ever gets another High School they should call themselves the “Barstow Bats”. Playing a road game would mean their opponents are in “Bat Country”..
I don't know how an actor could sing that badly, it's so funny
I would love to be on this road trip
Best first sentence of a book ever.
I used to break coffee cups for a living now I just sit around sharpening pencils with razor blades
Its the way they filmed this movie that makes it fun watching it high.

Just read the book. What a journey
I remember when I read it, I felt like somehow i had been sucked into the book, and there was no way out! I was along for the ride :) have you read The Kentucky Derby by chance? also an excellent read.
.
The film is great, but i actually prefer the book, you can build up your own picture of it.
The book is very good. Well worth a read.
reading the book really put al the missing pieces to the puzzle. I love how the book and movie start like a rocket. from zero to escape velocity in mere seconds
Remind of my childhood
How do you go from this to Sicario. Benicio del Toro is unbelievable
Reminds me of why i did LSD once, and only once. I can handle some stimulants, weed, downers and even mushrooms...but Acid is a whole different ball park.
I found it to be the most useful mind tool in the box.
I always found that mushrooms were a nerve wracking drug and LSD was a bit more easy going. When you take mushrooms, shit happens.
oneznzeroz I've experienced the reverse effect
Jay Cee I wish that my brain was more comfortable with shrooms. I would get so nervous during the climb, hitting peak had me wondering if I did too much but the come down was usually awesome. I don't do anything synthetic today so haven't done LSD in a couple decades.
oneznzeroz Acid is easy because it's clinical and (excluding set and settings) always similar. I find it easier to handle. Now, with shrooms you have to keep in mind there are plenty of them that (although the main working ingredient is psilocybin) have a little bit different effects. Shrooms tend to make talking a bit more difficult in the beginning of the trip, but after peak no probs. But you also get used to shrooms eventually. Then there are the toxic effects that may adversely influence your trip. I'm quite sensitive to those nowadays, so i eat them with something calming for the stomach, and drink some water to ease in (one way,if you have plenty, is to make tea). If still feeling sick, puke once ;)
It's a tragedy that comments like these get flagged for spam on UA-cam. Having previously thought that this movie was pretty much just about "drugs are crazy and so much fun," an attitude that I absolutely despise, I now want to actually see it. Thank you.

*BAT COUNTRY!*
Have you seen where the buffalo roam? It's astonishing how two different actors can create the exact same character when they are talented and of course, professionals in their occupation. I really started to respect Tom Hanks as an actor in a completely another level, after seeing the film. The mannerisms, the way of speaking, the impressions and the body language, it's all spot on with both of them, Depp and Hanks.
Tom hanks? You mean Bill Murray
Now the real question who’s the better Gonzo, benecio or Peter boyle
I swear, this scene reminds me of the last memory I had before I died in my previous life.
