  • Lars Von Trier is a controversial Danish filmmaker who has made some perfect movies, and some extremely imperfect films.
    Sub Here / neekowatchesmovies
Lars Von Trier's career has been full of lowlights, but the highlights make you pay attention to his every move. From his comments at Cannes that got him banned, to him winning the Palme D'or and screaming "I am the greatest filmmaker alive", he will always find a way to make headlines.
His filmography includes Antichrist, Melancholia, Nymphomaniac, Dancer in the Dark, The House that Jack Built, and a few other gems. In this video analysis, I will be ranking EVERY single one. Yes I watched every movie from Lars Von Trier.
The entertainment Lars Von Trier has brought to the cinemas, for better or for worse has always been a unique addition to the movie industry. My first time watching about half of these films, and the hate I can have for this man at times is just wild. I try to do some analysis and some explaining to some of these films, but other times I am just repulsed.

@@NeekoWatchesMovies no hard feelings lol. It just seems like you tried to go into the movie thinking it’s edgy for edginess’ sake, and then complained that it was too edgy. I highly recommend rewatching the movie looking for its symbolism and deeper meaning, and letting yourself appreciate the cinematography. It’s not for everyone, but it’s way more than just (to use a term I don’t like) torture porn, like a lot of people say.
      Other than that, good video!

I would put his Mini-Series The Kingdom above all his films. When he made it his main motive was to make something mainstream and entertaining, but him being him he gave it a Twin Peaks twist.

Antichrist is a magnum opus of brilliant artistic genius. A feast for the senses, stunning performances, provocative and boundary erasing storytelling, highly original and unique context, it is a film that is utterly fearless. And often criminally misunderstood. It’s so very near and dear to my 🖤, that I HATE when people blindly hate and bash it. It’s a masterpiece. And my favorite film from Von Trier. While his enjoyably quirky, darkly comic, character driven supernatural Danish tv ensemble miniseries/show The Kingdom (set in a hospital of the same name, where things are starting to get very, very strange), and the celluloid is drenched in sepia time for that “you are so fckd” atmosphere (😂), is in my top three favorite shows of all time. Number one? Twin Peaks. Which if you’ve seen both, you get how the person who loved one would love the other completely.
All that written, I’ll close with: when watching LVT, always be sure to take the ✝️with the 😈…if you know you know 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

Great video. My ranking would be very different but interesting how other people see his films. I am not sure LVT has set themes for each film, I think he explores contradictory themes without having conclusions while messing with the audience, often in a winking at the audience kind of way. I actually love Nymphomaniac and have seen the Director's Cut twice!

More love needs to be given for his debut The Element of Crime. It's such a unique experience both audio-visually, and narratively, and it already shows Lars boldly experimenting with cinema form - nausiating orange lighting throughout the film, unrealistically deteriorated and flooded sets, etc.. I haven't seen anything like it, not even close.

Could not disagree more strongly about Nymphomaniac which is a masterpiece. I particularly love the framing device which you trashed. It is hugely clever and entertaining and each time I watch it I see more connections between scenes and associated meanings with the analogies. The opening scene, which you also trashed, pulled me in immediately on first watching and when the circumstances are revealed at the end of how she got there it was a very satisfying resolution. The film confronts addiction and depression in about the most entertaining fashion imaginable and had me on first viewing hanging on the edge waiting for what would happen next and in all subsequent viewings seeing and understanding things I missed before. All that and it made me appreciate the Frank Cello Sonata in a way I hadn't before. I'll never hear it the same way again. This film is a true masterpiece of the first rank and may be Lars von Trier's magnum opus.

Art doesn’t owe us anything, and he doesn’t owe anything to us. He makes movies outside the box and makes something that pulls a piece of us every time. With that being said, I think he’s a misogynist, Nazi sympathizer with a plethora of mommy issues. Bjork put it best when she said “Lars needs women to put soul into his films, and he envy’s and hates them for it”. He depends on nativity of non Europeans and most apologists to make any headway with his films and it shows with every response in regards to his shit behavior. Quite frankly his last good film was breaking the waves, ever since then his work has insisted upon itself. THTJB and nymphomaniac (and I’ll say most of his work) is a reflection of how he sees himself, how society sees him, and what he believes. And if every lead he wrote is an interpretation of himself, then he sees HIMSELF as the victim all the time.

Your first clip you showed that you said you "hate so much, because no one in.the world talks like that". People actually do talk exactly about what she was explaining, just read 1984 from beginning to end, and you'll see that the destruction of language is a cancellation of the person. For how can one express themselves, if they lack the words to do so? I have heard numerous people discussing this exact thing - it's much easier to control somebody who doesn't know they're a slave, and wouldn't even have the language to express it if they realized they were.

maybe you missed the point in Nymphomaniac that sex is a totally absurd phenomenon tatached to the human condition by some typical prankster cruel god, the nymphomaniac just experiences the absurdity and accepts it fully. The rationalist/thinker has a neat metaphor/explanation for everything and the more he comes up with metaphors and equations - the end result is he becomes the absurd one and she becomes the sane one. She is the natural entity and he literally ends up being the non entity who's never lived. It's more a film (and comedy) about being than anything else. And i like the tv episode structure, pick up one thing about sex/life - explore, thrwo away on to the next thing.

@@NeekoWatchesMovies The CGI does look bad and also they killed Newt. Those are the two arguments I always hear about.
How about the unique atmosphere, the insane acting, the iconic and creative scenes, the music by Goldenthal, the feeling of absolute despair and the overall themes of nihilism and rape that are at the core of the franchise and shine more in this one than any other ?
Not even mentioning some of the shots that are just sublime in their lighting and composition
I'm just sad whenever people label it as bad. It was a production hell for sure but it doesn't mean that it's just bad and bye bye
What do you think sir ? Maybe give it another chance ?

I don't exactly love Lars either but I think there's far more comedy to the edginess than maybe is picked up on by most. Too he's just this indulgent guy expressing tons of stupid thoughts and putting it in his films to be visionary, I doubt he finds them that deep in the first place. The House That Jack Built is literally a meta film about himself and his own career, of course that one is indulgent and filled with dumb shit.
