- Los Angeles, California, USA - 2002 United States Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Short Program - Sasha Cohen placed 2nd after this skate.
Sasha is pure quality in all her technique;spirals, spins...amazing.
The thing that impresses me most about this performance is the lightness in her jumps; they are feather-light, especially the two triples, and the flow out of them is truly spectacular.
Sasha was brilliant in this short program. This and her 'Malaguena' were my favorites.
Today's skaters don't come close to Sasha's artistry and power - though they can whip out pre-rotated quad jumps.
I have never seen anyone so talented as Sasha. Her skating is absolutely exquisite. I just wish she would have been more consistent in her jumps.
She's not strong enough that's why. She's more delicately built then most. Most skaters with strong jumps are mesomorphs. She doesn't have the typical thick legs of skaters needed to execute triple jumps. I'm built like this and I was a skater. My coach used to tell me my legs weren't strong enough. She's built more like a dancer or model then a skater.

I would agree to both comments. Sasha was so elegant, graceful, and talented. Those jumps…her nemesis.
Sasha had to skate on crutches or she would fall everywhere on ice....
Haha I love Dick Button's comment that she can basically self-destruct and still look great doing it. So true.
That spiral sequence was the best ever. No one could hit that position like that. She should have been in first after this.
In my opinion, Sasha is the best skater in the world!!!!
In my opinion too!!
I always forget how Sasha didn’t always have that weird hitch on her triple flip, where she would switch to an outside edge at the last minute. She’s always flutzed the lutz, switching to the inside edge, but here she does the flip properly. She picked up a bad habit at some point with both of those jumps. Otherwise, what a program. I love the music. Very haunting and beautiful
Yep, those bad techniques were picked up as soon as she switched to Tarasova. Here is how her flip looked like just a few months after this competition: ua-cam.com/video/wxW1aGxOWL0/v-deo.html (vs here at 1:26)
She was underscore.....every movements was perfection....WTF with 5,5....5,6....?
1:50 - In the 20 years I've been watching this SP by Sasha, this is the first time I ever heard Terry Gannon say, "along with the smog."
Lol same. It was a joke ahead of it’s time.
Ahhh the good ole days of lovely Sasha.
Michelle Kwan couldn't hold a candle to a clean Sasha Cohen.
I would've had her in first. This was much better skated than everyone else that night.
***** Exactly. The placements in the FS would still be the same. Kwan in 1st, Sasha 2nd and Sarah 3rd.
Judges were still under this whole "wait your turn" policy. They wanted to put Kwan into the Olympics as the US champion, even if she fell once or twice, which she didn't of course.
Troy Turner I agree!
@@troyaturner1979 I would've had Sasha in 1st in the FS also. Her Carmen cannot compare to Kwan's watered down Scheherazade.
@@piznoctsauo8141 I dont know if I'd have her in 1st after the FS. That triple flip-double toe combo looked like she may have double footed the landing of the flip & because of the hand down on the triple salchow towards the end of the program.
Underscored
When i saw this live, i absolutely thought she would be first after the short program. But it really was the age of Michelle Kwan.
None Lovelier...
What are the deductions for? It looked perfect.
Because as always it was rigged to ensure Michell Kwan won
@@ytyt3922 no it was because of the footwork, it was too narrow. They may have removed marks for the flutz tho
@@hazeleyees Michelle was better than Sasha.
@@ytyt3922 Michelle's parents came from China. What control ? Michelle's classic programs were much more than Sasha's ......That's why Michelle got into the World Figure skating Hall of Fame, but Sasha didn't.
@@TT-ee4qp Kwan was so boring.
That didn't work for Alissa Czisny. She self destructed and it looked disastrous for her.
Ummm 🤔 I thought she won 😏
She was marked according to the rules, flutzing, she doesn't complete the circle in her required footwork and she hunches over in her sit spin. Her spiral positions have a complete split, but they're supposed to carry speed thru the sequence and be in the shape of a circle or serpentine. If you don't know these things, you would think she would be in first, otherwise... No!
I am not a specialist, but compared to Kwan's performance this same night, Kwan's Axel looked double footed; she just held the first spiral for a long time, but she didn't held the other two positions for long; Kwan's combination spins were good, but weren't perfect either. However, Kwan's Lutz was really good. Still, I think Sasha was a bit underscored.
I would agree with you if the judges consistently marked those mistakes. The truth is they only did when it suited them. Even now the skaters don't get called for flutzes or pre-rotations when they should.
And hunching over in her sit spin? Compared to the other ladies, Sasha was one of the better spinners. Michelle never had a good position in the layback and I don't think she was ever penalized for it.
LOL she looks so sour when Michelle Kwan speaks!
I know...I think it's her personality that did her in in the end... Such a shame...too bad she didn't have any humbleness.
I don't see that.
@ziba Well....maybe Sasha has a poker face.......
I’d say something in response to stick up for Sasha but am afraid it would be too touchy of a topic and some might get offended but I do have a very different take
