As far as I know the base armor is superior to most T-72s, maybe not the B3 but the original M-84 was far superior to any other T-72 variant at the time of its construction.
@@ruskibot7745 I'm not sure if was. The T-72B definitely had superior hull armour. Albeit for the turret, the NERA vs Quartz debate is quite contested. But the M-84 did have better FCS.

B1 is mid-80s, while M1 is late 70s upgrade in 1981.That said, if B3 is based on obr 89 T-72B, base armor will be superior. I was under impression they were putting down armor plates when modernizing so they probably got something new, or maybe not. However ... B3 has T-90A gun, from 2005 so while not sophisticated in its systems, its armor and gun are actually good.
They said the new engine is going to be put in the new tank during the second stage of the modernisation. I heard 1200 horsepower. Secondly I have heard when president of Serbia talked with the tank commander when he received the tank for further testing, president asked what do you think about new armor and reactive armour and in that moment one dude jumped and said to the president on ear something and then president said something like "ohhh we cannot talk about it, its state secret". Idk what all that means I'm just telling you what I heard. 9 systems are being modernised now and 12 more are going to be modernised and modernisation of the first 9 Systems are going to serial modernisation at the end of the year.

M-84 is not "basically same as the T-72" it was based on. Croatian an Serbian M-84s differ because there were a number of small modifications/upgrades during the war(s), but in a nutshell on average M-84s have: - a better FCS which has nothing to with the T-72 FCS - a better main gun - more accurate, more reliable and more durable (manufactured in Yugoslavia) - a better engine - more hp, more reliability and a better engine management system - better tracks which are less prone to breaking - the best production quality when compared to any vehicle based on the T-72 at the time - improved protection from landmines/IEDs for the driver - a turret floor - an armor plate separating the crew from the ammo stored beneath the turret - an improved auto-loader - faster loading and an improved auto-loading control system - better sights - better optics and NVDs on the base m-84 (i think) There is a number of different small upgrades which were designed for the M-84 ranging from modern voice comms and data comms, improved intercom, digital displays, FPE, sideskirts, thermals and remote weapons stations, laser warning receivers coupled with automatic smoke dispensers, improved NBC protection systems... Now let me burst your bubble a bit. All ex-yugoslav armed forces have downsized A LOT since the 90s. Serbia has in the past announced a bunch of defense industry related projects. Most of them have gone nowhere or are "forever-prototypes" with some notable exceptions (Nora SPG). There were a bunch of improvements for the M-84 proposed in Croatia as well. A company in Croatia even made a new turret for the M-84 that features composite "sandwich" armor (the M-95). Most of those projects (both Serbian and Croatian) have gone NOWHERE because of the budget restrains. Secondly, this project was presented to the public right before the elections in Serbia and is, most likely a publicity stunt. Even if it is not, it will take years before it reaches operational readiness.
@@your_waifu_hates_you Original M-84s had their armor based T-72A, I think while M-84A had its armor based on T-72B. M-84 production started around '84, while M-84A came some years later. I am quite sure that all M-84s today in service are in fact the A variant with its armor based on T-72B, with some improvements. On a side note, a lot of improvements to protection, mine resistance, firepower and FCS have been developed in Croatia ans Slovenia post war. There were also improvements do the instruments inside the tank developed eg. new driver instrument panel. It is unknow how many of these improvements made it to the tanks in service since Croatian govt. deprioritized a lot of military research projects especially during 2000-2003 Račan (Croatian PM) govt. M-84 is since viewed in Croatia as an obsolete platform which should be eventually replaced with something from the west and it does not really make sense to do any major investing in it. Đuro-Đaković, the company that maintains the tanks and the company that made the improvements since moved to license manufacture/assembly of Patria AMVs and to supporting the introduction of Bradley IFVs in Croatian Army. Here is their portfolio: www.duro-dakovic.com/download/documents/read/djuro-djakovic-specijalna-vozila-dd-obrana_31/ Most, if not all, of Serbian upgrades are election cycle stunts. Serbia has already made 3 different upgrade packages for their M-84s. The AS (2004), the AS1 and the AS2. So far there are 2-6 upgraded AS* tanks in the Serbian military. When you look a the Serbian and Croatian military budgets (10-15% difference, bigger budget in Serbia) and factor in that Serbian military has more than twice the number of personnel it is easy to see why. All Ex-Yu militaries reduced a lot in size during 2000s (And that's a good thing!) and are not really seen as priorities by their respective govts. The focus is more on public debt reduction, EU membership, social and welfare programs and keeping the country from falling apart. Someone tag @RedEffect and see if he agrees with my post. It's an old video, but let's see.
@@ChildOfVendetta now if the majority of m84as2 upgrades are m84a wouldnt that mean only the fire power of the upgrade package was a problem since with the aded era the armour protection is atleast 700mm of armour againts apfsds maybe even 800 and the tank has a 1000hp engine already so mobility shouldnt be an issue.
@@your_waifu_hates_you Don't know about armor values, don't really care. As far as I know, mobility was never an issue with M-84s. Croatian ones even have specially modified suspension and tracks designed for helping the tank cope with the specific rocky terrain of Croatian coast. Keeping the tanks highly mobile is in line with the Yugo doctrine and this definitely carried over to Croatian tanks and I think the Serbian ones as well. But there is only so much you can do with something based on a T-72B. The Serbs did a lot in their upgrade. Great, good for them. If they start upgrading the entire fleet of cca 200 tanks today, they will be done in 2030. And then you have something based on an 80s design with 2015-2020 features in 2030. And the tanks in 2030 will have to counter the threats like drones and improved javelins and NLAWs. T-72 and T-80 based tanks are obsolete by todays and tomorrows standards if you are planning for a high-intensity war and are facing threats like brimstone missiles. Are M-84s useful. Yes. But don't expect them to be able to go toe-to-toe with modern tanks and do expect them to be vulnerable to a lot of recently emerged threats as seen in Ukraine. The engineering that went into modernizing the M-84s is great, don't get me wrong. Those guys really did more then expected with what they had on hand. But is it enough? Compare M-84s to tanks todays designs... To Rheinmetall K-2 for example... Even Abrams is nearing the end of its upgrade potential. Americans are already working on new designs. The only reason why M-84s are still around is because no one has the money or the motivation to replace them. The upgrades are here to make them somewhat relevant and those upgrades are not going to be implemented in large numbers. Sorry to burst your bubble. :/ Croatia even gave up on the M-95 in early 2000s/late '90s. And the M-95 had a lot of features that T-90MS has like a separate storage with blow-off panels for additional ammo.
Lots of talking about underpowered engine. Tankers say almost it doesn't matter all. Top speed is same 700 or 1000 HP and top speed on rough terrain is limited by smashing head against all stupid stuff around it.
Very true. Tanks very rarely need to reach top speed and in combat situation, on uneven ground...700 hp is often enough (on soviet tank designs). Since spotting and hitting a target at such speed is very difficult on even top notch Abrams, LeClerc or K2 tanks. Having excessive power is useful when manovering short distances between cover. Even then there is another tank nearby providing overwatch in case enemy decide to attack moving tank.

passive armor of T-72B obr 89 on hull and turret is almost double of T-72M1. The base of T-72B from 1989 is 15+ years newer tech. Or more. T-72M1 got 16mm high hardness steel plate on the front hull and turret. But B series has composite spaced armor. If they upgraded B3 base armor I dont know, but B3 already has K5 ERA and a much more powerful gun that was first put inside T-90A. Dont underestimate T-72B line, it is obsolete, but if its base armor array was reworked, its not that obsolete, except turret is cast not welded, like from T-90A. Russia isnt buying new T-72s, they upgrade them to keep them relevant. B3 firepower is the same as T-90A due to new gun.
Serbia isnt done upgrading M84s, this is only 9 systems, its first phase, next phase will focus on fire power and mobility, myb even upgrading armor. Im expecting this tank to become as russian t90s, atleast till m20-up. m 20 is newly serbian developed tank (new serbian concept of tank extremly deadly and silent on battlefield)
The TR-85 is in some respects inferior to the T-55, in some respects the same as the T-55. All in all, that means it’s worse than the T-55. The TR-85M1 has a better cannon and aiming device than the T-55. I don't know if there is cannon stabilization. All in all, the TR-85M1 is a modernized stranger version of the T-55. The only reason for the existence of the TR-85 is that Romania can master the knowledge for production of larger caliber tanks such as the TR-125. So the TR-125 was the ultimate goal, not the TR-85. Unfortunately, Romania did not continue the TR-125 program. There would be something to be said about the TR-125. The TR-125 is now just a memory. I would love to see a video about the TR-85, TR-85M1 and T-55. I think that Red Effect deals with relatively modern tanks, not with the outdated TR-85, TR-85M1, T-55, M-60.

You should remember that T90 is also is modification of T72. So yeah I'm telling you that if you compare ALL T72 modernizations you definitely should compare it with late T90M. Good luck with it) But sure, serbian brothers made really good T72)
As an upgrade package, this look pretty good. Trouble is that like the croatian upgrade packagaes that are supposedly always just about ready to be deployed, it never goes anywhere due to lack of funds. That's what happened to the previous T-90 like M84AS upgrade pack...
Bro that was in 2004 and Serbia was under sanctions until 2008, that modernization package was made with hope that Kuwait will accept to modernize its 155 M84 tanks (purchased from the former Yugoslavia) and nothing more, Serbia Army did not have money to buy new uniforms let alone anything else back in those times, and plus the government did not care for military - they were only listening to the promises from Brussels about joining the european union and about paradise of which "serbia will be a part" and for that paradies they sold their souls. Things changed now, Serbian economy has the highest GDP growth in europe for three years in a row. Hundreds of millions of dollars have already been invested in our military and military industry the last couple of years and now we are waiting for the results.
Isn't the best T-72 modernization T-90M/T-90MS? T-90M is a modernization of T-90A, which is a modernization of T-90, which is a modernization of T-72B (also the reason the T-90 was called T-72BU at first), which is a modernization of T-72A, which is a modernization of T-72, so that technically makes T-90M a deep modernized T-72 (also T-90MS is an export variant of T-90M, the more you know)
And you know what t72 is variation of t64 and that one is variation of t55 so we cann al say that t90 is variation of legendary t34, dont be stupid russian tanks are evolution not revolution
That E.RA looks to be very effective. Now, if they can, only improve on the main armor! If they would do that it would make for one very well protected and "survivable" tank.!

M-84 is not "basically same as the T-72" it was based on. Croatian an Serbian M-84s differ because there were a number of small modifications/upgrades during the war(s), but in a nutshell on average M-84s have:
- a better FCS which has nothing to with the T-72 FCS
- a better main gun - more accurate, more reliable and more durable (manufactured in Yugoslavia)
- a better engine - more hp, more reliability and a better engine management system
- better tracks which are less prone to breaking
- the best production quality when compared to any vehicle based on the T-72 at the time
- improved protection from landmines/IEDs for the driver
- a turret floor - an armor plate separating the crew from the ammo stored beneath the turret
- an improved auto-loader - faster loading and an improved auto-loading control system
- better sights - better optics and NVDs on the base m-84 (i think)
There is a number of different small upgrades which were designed for the M-84 ranging from modern voice comms and data comms, improved intercom, digital displays, FPE, sideskirts, thermals and remote weapons stations, laser warning receivers coupled with automatic smoke dispensers, improved NBC protection systems...
Also just asking isn't the m84a armour based on the t72b or atleast equivalent to it
@@your_waifu_hates_you Original M-84s had their armor based T-72A, I think while M-84A had its armor based on T-72B.
Here is their portfolio: www.duro-dakovic.com/download/documents/read/djuro-djakovic-specijalna-vozila-dd-obrana_31/
Most, if not all, of Serbian upgrades are election cycle stunts.
LOOK AWESOME !!!
First phase is supposed to have 9 new subsystems and in the second phase 12 more. Together 21 new subsystems - according to serbian defence minister.

No, but this time it seems to be for real, Serbia will modernize a bunch of its tanks, it has already modernised few of them
Give it some relikt, nozh, duplet era and some ceramic on the outside, the petition will be very good then.
Great video as always

I would love to see Bosnia and Croatia send their M-84s to Ukraine perhaps in exchange for some Leopard IIs.
Actually, I believe the previous upgrade was called M-84AB1 (not AS1)
Isn't the best T-72 modernization T-90M/T-90MS?
T-90M is a modernization of T-90A, which is a modernization of T-90, which is a modernization of T-72B (also the reason the T-90 was called T-72BU at first), which is a modernization of T-72A, which is a modernization of T-72, so that technically makes T-90M a deep modernized T-72
(also T-90MS is an export variant of T-90M, the more you know)
Well t-90 has a different turret, also different reloading mechanism I believe. You might as well call it a different tank.
BU wasnt T-90, a variant before first T-90 ...
T 90 start as a t 72 modernization but later in development it became a tank of it's own. A think this chanel have a video of the topic
And you know what t72 is variation of t64 and that one is variation of t55 so we cann al say that t90 is variation of legendary t34, dont be stupid russian tanks are evolution not revolution
@@michaelsemyanovsky9638 Actually, the T-90A had a new turret and the new reloading mechanism from what I know
That E.RA looks to be very effective. Now, if they can, only improve on the main armor! If they would do that it would make for one very well protected and "survivable" tank.!
Upgrading base armor , adding a rear bustle auto loader n a new gun it will be up there with the best tanks in the world
Yes, I was just referring to its protection, but yes, they can improve on those other areas as well, and it would make it a very good tank!
