I think Izzy is just as deserving as Strickland as his past resume evens the loss to Strickland, and I dont mind a new matchup with past heated conflict between them. I think thats generally the sentiment of most people. Personally I'm 50/50 on it so I'm not bothered.

DDP took so many risks at the beginning of his career. He fought like 4 times in a year as well. But that Soldic loss always spooks him. He entered that fight camp injured and really struggled and then he lost. He clearly learnt from his mistakes. He also broke a bone in his foot in fight camp for Whittaker and he pushed through. People can say what they want about the guy, he is smart and he is a warrior. We all want to see the best versions of these fighters.

Dricus is tailor made to beat Izzy. Izzy doesn’t do well with big guys putting pressure on him.
Adesanya does well against overly aggressive fighters that frequently over-extend. It's interesting because depending on how reckless Du Plessis is & how/ if he times his takedowns this fight could be one sided for either guy.
If Du Plessis enters range intelligently, uses his kicks and isn't over eager to trade looping punches he could fold Adesanya easily with his grappling and strength.

Went on one of the best runs in middleweight history, lost to a weight bully whose skills match up toe to toe and is much bigger, came back and knocked him out. Then fought after getting a DUI/partying all camp and had a poor performance. This fight makes the most sense, if Strickland dominated costa it may be a different story.

So Izzy himself went on social media and literally said “ddp is out, Strickland your in!” Nobody was calling for Sean to get a shot. It was Izzy going down the list to see who was available. And tbh nobody was even pushing for this fight either, we all thought Izzy was gonna chin him rd1… most ppl didn’t even know who Strickland was until after the Izzy fight.

Strickland arguably beat DDP. They would give a rematch to any other champ who lost his belt like that. They just don’t want Sean as champ. These arguments make no sense. When is the last time Sean clearly lost? Pereira in 2022. Who also knocked out Izzy. Go figure.

If a champion loses their belt in a split decision loss where most people think the champion won it should be an immediate rematch. There’s way too much controversy around that decision. Even Dana thought Shawn Strickland won.
If there’s ever a time for the UFC to look out for a fighter because that fighter stepped up time and time again, this would be one of them.
As far as Izzy fighting Dricus, I’m excited for this fight.

About Strickland getting the “undeserved title shot”, they really had no one else to give it to. Dricus was next in line, but didn’t want to make the turnaround. Pereira had made the move up to LHW, Rob Whittaker was coming of a loss, Cannonier was injured and had already lost to Izzy. Strickland was ranked 5 and was coming off of 2 wins, and hadn’t took much damage. So when you think about, it was situational. The UFC didn’t want to do that in the first place.

Strickland was the very last one to be offered the fight because everyone else turned it down. Another thing is that Adesanya cherry-picked Strickland and begged the UFC to let him fight so he could put a beating on him and try to retire him. Adesanya absolutely DOES NOT deserve a shot at the title. If anyone deserves it, it's Strickland because he got robbed by the judges.

How many title shots has Robert Whittaker received. One!!!! And it was argued that he won that opportunity but lost via questionable decision because it was the UFC's favourite . Even when Whittaker won his belt it was'nt a title shot, he received it only becasue he held the interim so even then did not even given a title shot. There is no-one more deserving of a title shot than Whittaker. He had a shocker against Du Plessis but has beaten all other contenders. Prove me wrong.

So Adesanya, who lost the fight against Strickland in convincing fashion, deserves the shot more than Sean, who, debatably, lost a close fight to Dricus.
What is more, why lose the chance for another gritty fight, if Strickland and DDP were to fight again, and instead go for one were, despite what he may promise beforehand, Izzy will be running around looking for the counter as usual?
The guy is an amazing fighter, but most of his fights are boring to the casual audience. He could very well have been given the title shot after a few fights in the top 10-5; kind of force him to earn it, making his case by being more offensive and flashy. Now, he will just try to disrupt DDP as usual, and we'll go back to the bad old days of boring title fights where we are just waiting for the inevitable decision.

Now with that being said. He didn't lose to ddp I feel Dana stripped him of the belt because of his views outside of the octagon... If ddp won a belt with that kind of performance. I definitely don't agree with your take about who does and doesn't deserve a titleshot. Sean Strickland like him or not beat the shit out of Adesanya in one of the least competitive title shots you've ever seen, does lose the belt to ddp but in a extremly close decision which he arguably could have won and then after beats Costa very comfortably and clearly (Costa does not have an argument to win that fight imo).
Meanwhile Izzy is 1-2 in his last 3 and didn't defend his belt or anything during his 2nd reign as champ, lost the belt in embarrassing fashion. I really don't think you can take his first reign into consideration and maybe it's not a like for like situation but that logic to me is similar to Jon Jones and others arguing that Stipe deserves to fight Jones for the title next because of his status as the greatest heavyweight in ufc history.
Point is even if there is no "concrete" #1 contender I don't think Izzy should really even be in consideration if we were actually being fair across the board. Stricklands case at the very least is a lot stronger.

@@MMAJOEYC That's still one more significant punch than Adesanya landed and won 20 of the 25 minutes. There are multiple moments of Adesanya getting lit up & shelling up looking at the floor, I don't recall any of those same things happening to Strickland during that fight.
Meritocracy wise, Sean deserves it the most. He arguably won against Dricus and he beat Costa - regardless of how spectacular his performance was. Izzy lost the belt, gained it back, and then lost it right away again. He can go fight a contender. It would be one thing if he got a defense or two after he got it back the second time, but for him to get a title shot off a LOSS where he was thoroughly beat when he lost the belt TWO times in one year is crazy.
With that being said, DDP Izzy is a much more exciting fight, so I'm okay with it. It's not absolutely egregious to give it to Izzy.
