How I Made a Custom Moon Phase Watch From a Broken Seiko - Seiko Mod

  • While browsing ebay one day, I came across an interesting Seiko movement, the 6347, with automatic winding and a moon phase watch. I ended up the only bidder, and a couple weeks later it arrived on my door!
    I decided to build it up into a classy, moon phase, dress watch where I could practice adding a sunburst finish to watch dials (yes, the intention is to offer this on mechanical apple watch builds... if I ever get around to making more). Little did I know how hard this simple Seiko mod could be.

      Thanks so much my friend! In all honesty, the actual disassembly and reassembly to bring a watch back to life is reasonably approachable provided you have good eyes and lighting (or a microscope!). The difficulty for me has been getting things running well!

    This was a really well done build! Thank you for showing the fails, it helps with morale for others that are doing similar things to see that people don't just succeed on the first try.
    21:17 "You can see how much dirty grime is coming off" as apposed to clean grime. 😛
    For the automatic framework, a stupid suggestion for the stamp would be to fill it with solder and then laser engrave the right model onto it, so you can use the better one.

    • @JackSpiggle
      @JackSpiggle  5 місяців тому

      Thanks so much David! And there were plenty more fails I left out but have to keep the video light ;). I don't know that I would be able to match the finish if I redid the stamping. In all honesty, I could just ignore that the movement number is different as no one is likely to be back in there besides me but something about all these solutions just feels off. Not much rhyme or reason to what I wanted to keep original in such a frankensteined watch!

    Fantastic explanation buddy, been thinking of doing this myself. I wonder if an NH36 could be modified?

  • @dodgydruid
    @dodgydruid 5 місяців тому +1

    Bit of an obscure one the 6347, kinda the moonphase is using up the floor space used for the day wheel on the 6349, the 6349 is just a sexed up 6309 in the same way the 7S36 is just a tarted up 7S26 lol I don't think it matters as keeping any of these out of landfill is a worthy job, yesterday I finished my latest Seiko project a homage to Bell & Ross's radio compass, didn't have a spare NH35 so I just used a NH34 :P

    • @JackSpiggle
      @JackSpiggle  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah I was really surprised how little actually changes between the 6309, 6349, and 6347! Makes a lot of sense I guess and you can tell some of the 6347 parts have less thoughtful design behind them 😉. I too, need to find something to do with my extra NH movements, did you share your build anywhere for inspiration?
