      funny how white liberal women can talk about injustices toward the native people( 100% bullshit) but can't talk about racism towards white people (100% real)

    • @lambsox2608
      @lambsox2608 6 років тому +40

      +Kinnish umm ok... There may be some racism to white people I guess? I'm confused as to how but I'm sure there have been instances of micro-aggressions or mistreatment during wartime; however, none of this alleged 'racism' towards white people can compare to what has been done to native people. Holy shit - the Apartheid in Africa, slavery, the countless times colonial settlers pillaged, murdered, and raped indigenous people, etc. The list of awful things done to native goes on and on and on. Native people have been treated like dirt throughout history and into today; sadly there are very racist people today who treat those with a different skin color like shit.

      What does Apartheid have to do with Hawaii? It sounds like you are lumping all dark-skinned people together, whether Native Hawaiian or African (perhaps Kinnish is doing the same). Native Hawaiians are treated so much better than anyone else in Hawaii, except wealthy people. They basically get free land, they have two islands that non-natives can't even set foot on, they get jobs way easier especially in the service industry, and the authorities generally let them break traffic laws (like driving drunk and running someone over on the beach) and environmental laws (like harassing endangered marine mammals) with no consequence. Caucasians are not treated very well unless they have money or look like they do. A lot of fellow African Americans have told me the same thing about experiencing discrimination although I never really felt it myself and most of those that have said this to me seemed like they may have brought aggression instead of aloha and expected it to work. It does not. Ironically, aloha sometimes backfires on those Caucasians that live it the most. Hippies get it the worst. This was my experience living there. Have you ever lived in Hawaii? It doesn't seem like you have, but if so then maybe you should consider asking some Hawaii-born and local caucasians what they think.

    It is so interesting to think about how a place that so many people fantasize as a paradise, is just as normal as any where else. People live there, they commute, they work 9-5, they have families, etc. I can't imagine living that far from my family for so long, I definitely can understand the problem of living somewhere so small, where the only way out is through a long plane ride. This video made me think of that quote from Up, "Adventure is Out There!"

    • @AGC828
      @AGC828 6 років тому +3

      Agree 100%. I think people who've never been have an idealized view of what it's like to vacation and live there. The negative isn't shown usually. Not on Hawaii based TV shows or film. Friends that visit usually go during the summer months when the weather is great. Usually avoiding typhoons when they come. Stay in Honolulu or possibly go surfing on Maui's North Shore wanting to experience beach culture.
      While you mentioned there IS still the negative we'd find in other places on the mainland...I would have liked to have seen you show us the negative. Get some video if possible. Video shot during rain storms. People going to work. That it's not all a "vacation paradise" 24/7. What it's like to live there on a budget to what it's like if ridiculously wealthy.
      And it is like a "big small town"...more Maui than Oahu...where most people are more casual. Even if they do still have their share of multi-million dollar mega mansions running up to $22M. They only have a handful of car dealerships. Something some people living on the mainland might not be aware of. They have a few JP car dealers, 1 BMW,, 1 MB dealer 1 domestic...but if you're one to buy a mega mansion and what that Porsche or Ferrari to go with...you'd be SOL. Plus to have those cars serviced on Maui...good luck. :) Add some roads are not suited for sports cars. Hence all the pickup trucks and SUV's. Most are low-key. Casual. Some might like that.
      Would I want to live there? YES. But only if I could afford one of those homes on facing the ocean. Steps away....otherwise what's the point? I mean if you want to wake up looking at another condo or the roof of another detached home you could do that anywhere else on North America.

It’s home to people, a place some will only ever know. I’m so glad you enjoyed your time here! You’ll always have hawaii as a home to come back to.

    Born and Raised on O'ahu. Lived away for a couple years in California for school. Don't miss it at all. Came back home made it my home base once again. Came back, stopped going to school, worked several jobs so I could travel the world. Out of a backpack and very few funds. learned more than I ever could in a classroom... There is no place like Hawai'i. I don't care how expensive this place is, this Hawaiian is planning on dying here sorry. And yes you hit O'ahu pretty much spot on. But, people need to stop labeling their " Hawai'i" experience, when it's really their O'ahu experience. Neighbor island living is soo different...

    What's really amazing is how different Hawaii is compared to the rest of America with its spirit, the people, and culture. I feel it is a very different and special place. I also know its a place where more money doesn't always make it better since it causes homelessness to rise like with all places when big money moves in to your neighborhood.

I live in hawaii and took people places that is nothing to me but to them is was unreal . A guy from New york i meet fishing . I brought him to my friends baby first birthday lua . Real hawaiian lua for free . A girl from Florida who was in waikiki . I took her to the north shore . we Saw turtles built a bonfire on a secluded part on the beach . If you look for the bad . Thanks for sharing a realistic experience with us. I think many people travel to Hawaii with hard expectations. (it better be sunny, it better be warm, the beaches better look exactly like they do on the post cards, the people better be nice). The truth is whether one has a wonderful experience in Hawaii or anywhere else it begins with your own attitude and how well you treat those who you travel with or those you meet. Smile, wave , be gracious, courteous, thankful, sincere and it s guaranteed to carry you and those around you thru the less pleasant experiences.
    It's no different in Hawaii.

Oahu defiantly has a dark underbelly but I had an amazing time too. I had to move back to the mainland to get a decent job though. I miss Hawaii a lot and now its actually been 10 years since I have visited. I have gone to Maui and the big island in the last few years though. Anyway I share your love of Hawaii and know how it is to miss the beach and the warm weather. I hope to move back one day but probably to the Big island. Thanks for sharing your story. Aloha.

    I go to university on an island and I can definitely relate to this even though it's nothing like Hawaii. I get to live in a place so many people visit on vacation and I get to experience all of it in my daily life. I feel so lucky to live here and everybody who lives here are so kind and cares about the island. As mush as I love it I definitely feel isolated from time to time because of the distance. It is weird to live on an island and I do find it hard to describe to people because even though it sometimes drives me crazy I love it so much.

    Aloha, nice vido. Makes me homesick, a little. I moved to Honolulu in 1983, and met my 3rd husband there. He was my boss in a furniture store, near the airport. While I was there, we got married in Kakiolani Park, jad my last 2 children there, owned my own Taxi Company, and a tour company, as well. I did tours for almost 10 years, so I really had a great chance to really know and understand Hawaii and it's history. Absolutely loved doing tours, better than any job I had ever had. The Hawaiian leople are so awesome. Not really any prejudice in the islands, like on the Mainland. I have lived there a total of 14+ years. Actually moved back, four different times. Once my Honolulu born children grew up and got married, I decided that I just was not in love with there father anymore, so I left and moved back again. I stayed for a year, and moved back to Fresno, California, where my family was. Stayed there a year, and Hawaii called me back again. This time while I was there (2013---2014), my husband decided that we might as well get a divorce, so we did. Then I moved to Grants Pass, Oregon for 6 months, until my divorce was final..Okay, when that was over, I moved back to Honolulu, again..I stayed for just over 2 years, and my .kids wanted me to move back to California, because they could not afford to come and see me with their whole families. So, now I am in Sacramento, where I was orn, and went to High School at. I didn't want to live in Fresno anymore. Now I hang out with a bunch of my High School friends., but I am getting bored again..LOL, yes, I am a ROLLING STONE. So I am going to buy an RV and live in it and that way I cand just pick up and go whenever I feel the need for change.(which is about every 6 months)..I would love to move back to Honolulu, but my Hawaii living is pretty much over with. I have a ton of friends there to visit, when I feel the Islands calling me, which they do when I watch these videos, like yours. Anyway, just be very happy that you had the chance of a lifetime to say you were a KAIMAINA (local girl..lol)

It was a great community of locals and weird hodgepodge of people from all over that made it a wonderful experience. I remember my best friend and I going to Waikiki and kicking it in thier pools and ordering drinks and tourists asking us where are we from and we would say, ehh we live here!! Cool video and thanks for sharing. It made me miss my time there. Such a cool place!!

    I just wanted to say thank you. My family has been debating moving to the islands for years, but something has always gotten in the way, whether that be work or fear of the unknown. But, this year my parents are making finally making the decision, which is more than likely a move to the Big Island. As an over analytical high schooler, in love with where I live already, I've been so afraid and hesitant to lean one way or the other, but this video has helped me become more open to the change. In fact, excited. Thank you for easing a lot of the worries I've had with this wonderful video!

I agree after you spend a few years in a place and eating the food and drinking the water from there, enough of those molecules become a part of your body that in a weird sort of way you become a child of that place and it will always be home. • @anitamendez116

      Music Games...It’s not obvious to everyone. Not everyone knows there are 8 Hawaiian Islands. Just clarifying.

    • @anitamendez116
      @anitamendez116 6 років тому +1

      Music Games...That is exactly my point. She did not clarify that her experience of “Hawaii” was specifically on the island of Oahu. ALL Hawaiian Islands are not the same. That is the only point I was trying to make. If your perception is beyond that...so be it.

    • @anitamendez116
      @anitamendez116 6 років тому

      Music Games...You have taken my point (as a true statement of Clarity) and turned into a common sense issue. It has NOTHING to do with common sense. It has to do with clarification and knowledge of the Hawaiian Islands. Someone who knows nothing about Hawaii and has never been to any of the Hawaiian Islands may take this video and other comments on this video as “That is how it is” in Hawaii. All she had to do is say, “The Island of Oahu”. I don’t think that is a difficult statement of clarity.

    Us locals really do hustle everyday only to JUST meet our needs. I'm 23 and have a one bedroom apartment that I share with my boyfriend and rent is 1,200 NOT including utilities. It's literally 500 square feet. My parents and family have struggled our WHOLE lives, and they did not contribute anything to my adult life. I have go here on my own. Imagine being young and not even able to do school shopping every year as some are fortunate to do. I've worn clothes that were too big for me my whole life(hand me downs from my 5 year older sister). I can't even afford to be sick from work because that loss of One Day could really impact the payment of bills. Although Oahu is beautiful, us locals can't even enjoy it because we are too busy working 365 days out of the year and working 12 hour shifts only at $15 an hour. It's ridiculous and (yes, we could just leave), but this is the price we pay to live here. Not because it's "paradise", but because this is where our Ohana is, and where our roots started.. thank you for this great video!❤
