  • When we order from a fast food restaurant, our expectations are fairly low, as we really just want a cheap, quick meal that does the job. That seems like a simple and fair request, right? Sadly, there are times when fast food places can’t manage to meet even the lowest of expectations. Perhaps it was our fault for trusting a fast food joint in the first place, but it seems silly to consider fair business practices as a lofty ideal. From Burger King’s Croissan’wich swindle to Chipotle’s shady calorie counting, join us as we warn you what fast food restaurants straight up cheat their customers.

I stopped eating fast food in 2005. It's not healthy and contributes to the nations obesity crisis. I can make it cheaper and would rather contribute to locally owned businesses that really use locally grown items. If more people did this the fast food chains would serve better food.

I worked at a McDonald's 20 years ago. I was a cashier, but one day I was at the fries station and was giving fresh, hot fries. I FILLED UP the boxes, customers were happy... until the supervisor saw me and asked me NOT to completely fill them up!! They were half filled up! I also did the same thing with Sundays, McFluries, shakes, etc. My customers were satisfied, but I got in trouble.

Marsonlord Gaming: No, not with the box (es) of nuggets. The managers that (usually) worked in my shift, and the kitchen crew were fast, clean and didn't cheat with the food. It was only a few times that the supervisor went to the store and told us to do some things in certain ways.

In the evening shift, there were 3 guys that made a great team, and were able to handle the kitchen just them 3, even if the restaurant was full of customers... well, that was like 20 years ago...

I stock up when items are on sale. I also cook from scratch as much as possible. I make breads, soup stock etc. Tonight we had lo mein, fried rice and chicken fingers. Probably cost $4 to make and made about 8 meals.

Same here. I worked for Mc Donalds between '16 and '18, and I was told to do that.. I didn't, unless the person who was ordering was being a jackass about whatever. I loaded as much as I could into them, because 1.72 for a small, 2.91 for a medium and 3.23 for a large is ridiculous.. I also did with shakes, sundaes, smoothies and frappes if the customer was at least not terrible, and they had ordered it. But if they wanted to change it from a medium to a large while I was making it (they wanted a large but didn't want to pay the 3.23-4.99 depending on what drink they got) then well you got less because that's that's jackass move and you're just trying to get the employee in trouble because you're selfish.

Like the person in the story, I discovered I paid more for a McDonalds value meal instead of purchasing the same items individually. So I started ordering the items individually, but most of the time the cashier would ring it up as a value meal. So I started requesting the items to be rung up individually instead of as a value meal. Some cashiers were able to do it, but others were too lazy and would say they didn't know how. So I stopped going to McDonalds.

I use to work for McDonalds and they scam customers more than all the other burger fast food especially with the fries. Knowing that they do that, every time I go to McDonald’s now I always tell them not to squeeze the fry container and make sure to fill the fries to the top lol. What’s annoying is how the workers and even manager gets upset when I tell them that and tells me that’s McDonald policy/rules.

The McDonald's fry part is true. During my first day working there I was on fry duty. I'd prop open the little red carton with a plastic scooper filled with fries that fits inside and the fries slide down inside. My boss comes up behind me and says, "No no no. Like this." She empties out the fry container I had just filled and loosely fits the scooper in the carton so that a lot less fries fit. "See? We waste less."

If she hands me a fry and it's not filled I'll go back over there and fill it up. When she hands me a drink a lot of times it's like just and inch above half way. So I have to go back to the soda machine and fill it all the way. I also put more ice cream in the shakes than what I'm supposed to. Stopped at a fast food place for a small coke. After the server filled the glass he seemed to be having an issue. I asked what the problem was and he said he couldn't locate a lid for the cup. I asked if he had lids for the next sized cup. He said yes and poured my drink into the next sized cup that was about forty cents more. The drink almost filled that cup to the top and we both looked at it realizing the cup had been narrowed and was taller but held almost he same amount as the smaller cup. Stopped at a seafood fast food place and ordered a seafood meal that came with fries and onion rings. I got one onion ring and when I asked the server about it she said that's all they included so I pointed out that the menu said served with onion rings. She finally included one more. Really. This is how businesses fail. I stopped at a barbecue place and ordered a sliced beef sandwich and then drove for a half hour before pulling it out. One bite and I looked in the sandwich to find it filled with sliced fat. Most barbeque places now have gotten so cheap that you have to ask for lean brisket or risk getting the stuff they used to make chopped beef sandwiches out of. My most memorable was going to taco bell and ordering their spicey chicken burrito. First bite rice, second bite rice, ate the rest and no chicken that I could identify. I complained to the manager that there wasn't any chicken in my burrito. He said he had weighed the chicken for each burrito. I told him there wasn't any in my order and he asked what I expected for the sale price. I pointed to the large picture up over the counter that showed the chicken burrito with multiple slices of chicken hanging out of the end and said I expected it to at least resemble the ad.

I agree and I've been around long enough to remember buying cokes for a nickle. Going to the movie theater matinee on saturdays. The ticket was 60 cents and drinks and popcorn were ten to fifteen cents each. You got to see a cartoon, a serial and two movies. I don't go to the movies anymore because I'm not going to spend what would amount to a days wages to get a couple of tickets plus refreshments. A couple of years back the toilet paper I use looked different. It was suddenly deeply embossed. Kind of fluffed up. I checked the package against one that was sitting on the shelf in the pantry. Fifty less sheets a roll. Now in that 12 pack they shorted me one roll of tissue for the same cost. I was making some from scratch brownies last night. I had bought a new package of baking chocolate and compared it to an older package on the shelf and noticed the package was a lot smaller yet you can bet I paid more for it. Back when I was a kid we bought one pound chocolate hershey bars. Now the bars aren't even half a pound and getting smaller each year. Remember when every product was advertised as new and improved. We need a law that companies must label all products when changes are made, such as now with less sheets or new smaller amounts in net weight. Lets see how manufactures deal with the blow back when they can no longer hide stealing from the consumer. Right now the internet is trending on pepper as mccormic has reduced the net weight in their cans of pepper while keeping the can the exact same except for the lesser weight of product. Companies no longer bother to claim settling of contents is why the packages are half empty. It's all simply to fool the consumer so they don't realize they're getting less all the time.

Another way they are fooling customers is cereal boxes that on a grocery store shelf are the same height and width but the boxes are different depths....that is, a 12 ounce box from the front looks exactly like the 16 ounce box. Unfortunately, they are not the same price on a cost per ounce basis.
Another stunt food manufacturers are pulling is to package fewer cookies in bags/boxes that have not been shrunken in size. One of my favorite cookies used to come 36 cookies per package. It is currently down to 32, with the same size bag just bigger dividers between the rows of cookies. Candy bar manufacturers did the same thing when chocolate and sugar got more expensive. They kept the packages the same size but shrunk the candy.

Why can’t restaurants stop shortchanging their consumers? I won’t even mind if it’s halfway there, but some of them are absurd. I once got this prepackaged sandwiches, and realised that that the ham in the triangle cut sandwiches are 7cm in length and only 0.1cm in width. They really cut, arranged and packaged the ham in that way to make you think there’s a layer of ham inside, in reality you get 2 slices of 7x0.1cm ham

Worked BK for years, the sandwich issue is because they've been on a '2 for $4' sale forever. If you only buy one, its $3.19 or so.
So she wasn't getting hosed, she was ordering a single sandwich - which is priced at $3.19 and shows as such on the menuboard.

People like to make fun of the 'coffee is hot, duh' lawsuit, but really the coffee was way more hot than necessary (180 degrees). Hot but drinkable coffee shouldn't cause you third degree burns. At that temp even if you managed to not spill it, you'd need to let it cool off for several minutes before it would be drinkable without burning your mouth.

Elespada, Wrong, most likely someone that order the small fries got the large ones if you watched when they are busy all the food is put in the same area and then bagged allowing for the small/large mistake to happen easily if they just look at fries on the order and not pay attention to the size

    • @circa4650
      @circa4650 5 років тому +18

ba sillah - wrong , fries are not usually made to order , a certain number of each portion size fries are kept on a rack in the fry station and then replaced as they get taken . granted , occasional mistakes do happen but you'd have to be pretty incompetent to keep making that same mistake .
i can confirm i have been repeatedly told not to fill the fry boxes up by shift managers . i also was told on many occasions not to squeeze the fry boxes out fully so they are thinner than intended and take less fries .
additionally if you walk into a mcdonald's and it's not busy , keep an eye on the fry station because workers will scrape the old fries off the rack that have been sat there for hours if they don't have quite enough to fill a box . i've even seen managers do it a few times .
edit - by the way , that's why you get the occasional super crispy fries in the box . they've either been stuck in the fry basket and re-fried about 10 times , or been sat in the fry rack for hours . don't eat them !
aside from that , generally mcdonald's employees are respectful and hygenic . you can't believe all the horror stories you hear on the internet . i no longer work at mcdonalds but please be nice to the employees , they're exhausted and want to go home but they will try and give you the best service they can . most of the time .

A double cheeseburger is a McDouble with two slices of cheese, a medium fry is a small fry and half a small fry, the number 9 (2 cheeseburger meal) is the same price as if you got a double cheese burger medium fry and drink separately. It’s cheaper to get a cheeseburger than a hamburger. Managers get mad if we fill the fry container all the way. We also get chewed out for giving more sauces than they paid for. You still have to pay for a large water because you’re not paying for the drink itself you’re paying for the cup. If you want a buttermilk crispy sandwich but don’t wanna pay 5 bucks get the biscuit and sub it for a bun. We are told specifically not to fill your ice cream Sunday all they way and don’t think asking for no ice for your mccafe drink will get you more coffee. The machine only puts the same amount for every size.

The last thing you'd want in your Burger King burger is someone's foot fungus. But as it turns out, that might be what you get. A 4channer uploaded a photo anonymously to the site showcasing his feet in a plastic bin of lettuce. With the statement: "This is the lettuce you eat at Burger King." Admittedly, he had shoes on.
      But that's even worse.
The post went live at 11:38 PM on July 16, and a mere 20 minutes later, the Burger King in question was alerted to the rogue employee. At least, I hope he's rogue. How did it happen? Well, the BK employee hadn't removed the Exif data from the uploaded photo, which suggested the culprit was somewhere in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. This was at 11:47. Three minutes later at 11:50, the Burger King branch address was posted with wishes of happy unemployment. 5 minutes later, the news station was contacted by another 4channer. And three minutes later, at 11:58, a link was posted: BK's "Tell us about us" online forum. The foot photo, otherwise known as exhibit A, was attached. Cleveland Scene Magazine contacted the BK in question the next day. When questioned, the breakfast shift manager said "Oh, I know who that is. He's getting fired." Mystery solved, by 4chan. Now we can all go back to eating our fast food in peace.

Depending on the Subway you go to Managers often hate 5-6 dollar footlong promotions. So they find more ways to skim off the top such as cutting subs a certain way and giving you 6" inch meat portions, replacing lettuce with cabbage, giving barely any of the other veggies, stretching the sauces, and claiming to be out of breads/veggies when they're not.

As someone who has been on both sides of this, and now actually gets it, here's the deal: Fries are sold as per weight, so an amount. 4oz to like 8oz or something. Yes, your box may not look overflowingly full, but the employee is not supposed to overstuff the box, as it crushes other fries, and usually it means you aren't getting as fresh of fries as you would probably like and deserve. Fresh, hot, crisp fries should fill out a box easily and loosely and be the correct weight you're paying for. Old, floppy fries will usually be stuffed together to make it look fuller and less soggy! A good indication of knowing whether your fries are fresh, is to just look at a McDonald's fry fryer. If there isn't a fry basket down, and things are flashing on the fryer screen, that's a countdown timer to when you're supposed to toss them. If there are no countdown timers, and the screens are solid, you probably just got old fries. Best to check before you order, and just ask for fresh fries. Never know how your local place runs things, and some (like mine) actually use a smaller range of time to ensure good quality. Conversely, if you just want more fries, don't ask for fresh ones, lol. I've rarely seen fries stay up more then ten minutes at my store, so the turnover of them is pretty fast at busy locations.
Some people will get trained in crappy ways, and not be told the actual reason for the way we do things, because they are paired with people who were never taught the proper procedure (and that sucks, but that's also real life at a chain restaurant). I'm the kind of person who wants to know, and be fair to customers. So, I get out a fuckin' frybox weighing scale when people are over or underfilling fries to show them how much there should be. At the same time, you aren't paying for a container, and other people are watching calories, like me. A certain weight of fries will have that amount of calories, so overfilling and stuffing makes calorie counts go out the window. There's a lot of reasons for why we do this stuff.

The thing about the subway issue is another problem because I worked at one for two years and I know that subs are priced by the meat (unless it’s a veggie) so whether the sub is 12inches or 11 the price will always be the same because the amount of meat you get is the same. That’s why whether you get no veggies or all the veggies the prices stays the same. Also, that bread was really under baked and wasn’t stretched before being put in the proofer (it’s because some employee got lazy) which resulted in a shorter sub and being under baked.

I used to manage a McDonald's location. We were instructed by corporate to pinch the bottom of the fry boxes and continue to keep the pinch on them until they made it to the rack that was tight enough to basically continue the pinch so it would visually appear to be full from the customers sight lines. I would get in trouble for not pinching the boxes and actually filling them up.

  • @motleyassortment5512
    @motleyassortment5512 2 місяці тому

The thing able pinching the fry box is true, it's not a written policy but a verbal policy from higher up.
You pinch the box so you won't be able to fit as much fries in box ( this was back in 2005 when I experienced this fry shrinkflation ).
I don't know if they still practice this or not, I will have to order some fries and pay close attention to the fry box next time I order one and give you an update on the practice.

some people are just ridiculous. it seems some people have issues with fast food restaurants, despite eating their food regularly. i guess in their mind, fast food owners are rich, and can afford to have a pay out. lack of respect and reflection of one's self is the problem in these individuals. shame, but this is one reason society is shitty at times. no sense of accountability/responsibility :(

A lawsuit over bean sprouts? I am not surprised a lawyer took this case, but I am surprised that a court actually took it serious. I was always under the impression that if you don’t like something, don’t purchase it again. If you don’t like something, don’t buy it. If you don’t like the way it is being served to you, or of the restaurant that is serving at, don’t go back. Chances are you’re not the only one and the problem will resolve itself.

When I worked at McDicks I would literally do the opposite and pinch the boxes open wider to be able to stuff more fries in. Same with ice cream and shit. Managers would tell me not to do it and I'd just be like "oh okay sorry my bad" and then just keep doing it because most of the time they weren't looking 😂😂

As one lawsuit indicated, it's not about getting a tiny bit of less food or charged a buck or two more...It's the principle! I love when consumers challenge large corporations. Although it's primarily lawyers that benefit, it forces corporations to stay on their toes.
That said, I have some important questions for everyone:
    1. Hands up if you've ever taken extra condiment packets, salt&P, napkins, etc. from a fast food place?
    2. Hands up if you've ever asked for extra dipping sauces...and always got them.
    3. Hands up if you've ever complained about a product.. and always got a replacement...no questions asked.
    4. Hands up if you've asked for a little more topping on a sub, burrito, taco etc...and always got it.
I see a lot of hands in the air. Including mine. It's hard to be too critical of the fast food business when most of us are guilty of 'bending' the rules and/or taking advantage of their great customer service.

I view it as decreasing the amount of funds available for dumb advertising. Why am I having to pay for singing and dancing to tell me your breakfast sandwich is now available 24/7/365? Just have someone read the ad. It costs less.

Bob bobbyy...As I said, I agree the restaurants have no right to swindle. And we'll have to disagree that "every time" we buy food from these places its low quality. I'm a big fan of the consistent-quality of major fast food chains. They follow quality-control rules that customers count on. For example, a Big Mac basically tastes the same everywhere.
Of course, there can be exceptions. But all a person has to do is make a valid complaint on the quality of a product. They'll give you a free replacement.
The key point I'm making isn't about quality of food. It's about how people should grab some perspective before complaining about a few less fries (etc).

In japan the big-mac is made with much better sauce, beef, and veggies. In the UK its the same, as with most of the EU. The US gets the short end of the stick because our laws are for the CEO and not the people buying the food.

hugh jorgan: Most of the time I get my order WRONG at the McDonald's near my house. Even when I WRITE THE LIST of the items I want!!! 😲 Last time, I bought food and a toy for my daughter (not the actual happy meal), and when I got home, there WAS NO TOY and no sauce for the nuggets... that's why I check the bags before I leave the restaurant, but that day I trusted them... no toy, no sauces...

Tip for y’all: if you go through the drive through, when you get your food check it at the window, don’t move away and double check it with your receipt. Been cheated a lot by realizing I missed food

Krispy Kreme is great when the hot fresh donut sign is lit. When they get cold forget it. KK's crueller is a huge fraud compared to DD's crueller. DD has a much better plain cake donut than KK.

My state doesn’t have Krispy Kreme in any town or city. All we have is Dunkin or Starbucks. I prefer Starbucks though because I love the coffee and specialty drinks. I had Krispy Kreme once, and I’d sell my soul to have it again.

I work at Burger King and I STUFF the fry containers. I put more than one or two napkins in the bag, especially if they've got a sandwich with extra mayo or something like that. We're only supposed to give one sauce for an eight piece nugget, but I give two. When making Oreo shakes, I put two or even three pumps of Oreo crumbs in the cup even though we're only supposed to put one.
I've been told off at one point or another for all of this but I don't care, we're supposed to give the people what they paid for!
