My band played a club one night and Chuck was sitting at the bar. Coincidentally we always opened every show with Johnny B. Goode. As we started playing the song Chuck finished his drink and left. I joked to my band mates, "Man, we really impressed him!"

Hahahaha great story, he played Johnny B Goode, in D flat. In A maj it has more depth, but Chuck makes it sound good in any key. You probably almost lured him, but he is big headed so he left. So I think you impressed him. I played Bass for him once, and some young kid begged to play drums, he walked over to me and told me to tell that drummer he wanted some clean breaks. As soon as the song started, he skidded to a stop, and faced the young drummer, and told him get off the drums. Poor guy was shamed to death, so another bands drummer said he can do it, and he did, so the show was on, he does not tell you the chords, he just will say the song title and take off, you have to slide down the neck until you hit the key, usually E-D-B flats. Anyway thanks for sharing I love honest pride.

Awesome video Mike! He was quite the character... and he did write a song called... "My Dingaling"... I don't think it was about a dinner bell! He was definitely one of a kind... Chuck's Berries... and all! He broke all the rules he could... and the "authorities" did everything they could to try and destroy him for helping create the "Devil's" music... Rock N Roll! A walking contradiction... if you believe everything they said he did... he was one bad as rockin' dude!

Sad to say we played on the same bill twice with Chuck years ago. He was interested in getting paid in cash and getting gone quickly. He smoked, drank and was quite nasty to all. It's totally true that he didn't care what group played with him and he could be angry and harsh to them right during a performance. He just started playing and you had better be on it right away or else. Too bad for all the fans to finally know how he really was. His poor wife that stuck with him all those years.

But I really think his vices were women by the abundance. Lol, I read this stuff about 20 years ago. But I'll bring up something positive to end this text. He gave credit where credit is due. I'll never forget afternoon TV show, mid 70s (either Merv Griffin or Mike Douglas) had Berry on: "we boogied in the kitchen, we boogied in the hall, she boogied on my finger so I wiped it on the wall". He even motioned with his tongue and finger. The producers did not seem to know what he meant. I did. I was eleven. Saw him at the Ontario Place Forum two summers later. He could still do the duck walk. Man knew how to work a crowd. Too bad about the perv-cam. He tarnished his legacy.

There was a British documentary in the 70's that Chuck was interviewed for and filmed during a tour (I think)...may have been BBC...I saw it in the late 70's and since then I haven't seen or found anything I searched...Anyone have any ideas where I can find it?...There was an incident where Chuck is asked about his run in with the law and Chuck walked out saying something along the lines of 'this isn't what we agreed to talk about'...My guess is that the interviewer saved this until they had enough footage and Chuck had already signed for the documentary to be aired once it was recorded...It was a fascinating insight and the music was brilliant (I remember because I recorded the music on my first cassette player)...Anyhow...Big Chuck fan here...Saw him in concert and then have visited his grave and his St.Louis home since he passed...From the UK

I have to wonder how much more time he would have done in the slammer if he hadn't been rich and famous, and hadn't been able to grease the right palms. His off-the-meter depravity doesn't take away from his musical contributions. It's nonetheless disheartening to know that someone who was a musical pioneer was also such an utter pervert, who got away with so much only because of his wealth and fame.

I watched Cadillac Records last night on DVD for the first time in years. It's a great movie that every fan of Chess music stars should see. I don't know about Chuck, but Muddy, Wolf, Walter... came from very impoverished environments. I doubt any of them spent much time in school as children and I suspect their upbringing was typically harsh for the time. I don't believe Chuck was as bad as the stories would have you believe. Sure he made some mistakes and some bad calls, but in that time of racism and social decay, these very creative artists had no real formula to follow as to how to behave in 'high society'. And high society judged them harshly for it.

rock n Roll means "STREET SEX." Sex, drugs and rock n roll have always been an open truth, and proud brag among rock n roll people. Little Richard totally backed up all this just before he died. The Beatles who loved Chuck Berry, said Little Richard was the TRUE first person to invent and play rock n roll. Richard agrees and always has. Richard believed in homosexual orgies and drugs as a lifestyle and sang about it. His lyrics were so filthy the radio could not play his songs without changing some words. This is according to Little Richard himself. Women absolutely love this most debased music , sex, drugs and gladly called themselves groupies and made fan clubs to Rock n rollers.
