My band played a club one night and Chuck was sitting at the bar. Coincidentally we always opened every show with Johnny B. Goode. As we started playing the song Chuck finished his drink and left. I joked to my band mates, "Man, we really impressed him!"
😅🤣😂Great story. Thanks for sharing!
Great story - fits nicely with his reputation for being a thoroughly miserable so-and-so!!
So Chuck was really Chester the Molester
@@jimmysapien9961 '' I joked to my band mates,''
Hahahaha great story, he played Johnny B Goode, in D flat. In A maj it has more depth, but Chuck makes it sound good in any key. You probably almost lured him, but he is big headed so he left. So I think you impressed him. I played Bass for him once, and some young kid begged to play drums, he walked over to me and told me to tell that drummer he wanted some clean breaks. As soon as the song started, he skidded to a stop, and faced the young drummer, and told him get off the drums. Poor guy was shamed to death, so another bands drummer said he can do it, and he did, so the show was on, he does not tell you the chords, he just will say the song title and take off, you have to slide down the neck until you hit the key, usually E-D-B flats. Anyway thanks for sharing I love honest pride.
I don't know about most of it but that Fender strap on a Gibson is madness
As a dedicated Stratocaster man myself, that was possibly the most troubling part of the video for me. 🤣
Somethings belie common sense.
I need therapy now...
That should have been a red flag
Strap was most likely free.
Chuck Berry is the closest thing to a real life version of the Chapelle Show skit on Rick James. J. Brown also was a really sleazy individual as well.
"My dingaling my dingaling I want you to play with my dingaling"
Chuck Berry
"Those of you who will not sing - you must be playing with your own dangling." 🤣
Ha! Before AC/DC double meaning lyrics, there was Chuck Berry. But I think that was the only dirty song he ever did. I think that The Steve Miller band was his back up band when that live version was popular on the radio. A bell.....indeed 🛎 😂

Awesome video Mike! He was quite the character... and he did write a song called... "My Dingaling"... I don't think it was about a dinner bell! He was definitely one of a kind... Chuck's Berries... and all! He broke all the rules he could... and the "authorities" did everything they could to try and destroy him for helping create the "Devil's" music... Rock N Roll! A walking contradiction... if you believe everything they said he did... he was one bad as rockin' dude!
I never knew Chuck had all those issues. I just enjoyed his music and appreciated his contribution to rock and roll.
I’ve heard this before .

If you like his tunes enjoy it,
Don't worry bout his personal life

Sad to say we played on the same bill twice with Chuck years ago. He was interested in getting paid in cash and getting gone quickly. He smoked, drank and was quite nasty to all. It's totally true that he didn't care what group played with him and he could be angry and harsh to them right during a performance. He just started playing and you had better be on it right away or else. Too bad for all the fans to finally know how he really was. His poor wife that stuck with him all those years.
I visited Blueberry Hill a few weeks ago. Read a quote from Chuck that said, "I don't come here for the music, I come here for the wings." I knew he wasn't being cute, but rather honest!
He made Keef cry
He attacked Keith Richard when Richard touched Berry’s guitar.
Chuck Berry's biggest hit, according to Keith.
Ronnie HAIG , rockabilly singer, was at a studio in Chicago and found a black guy playing his $300 ES 290. He said, be careful that’s an expensive guitar. Turns out it was Chuck b
Berry was in prisons three times. You left out his two and a half years for armed robbery.
Chuck Berry is a Legend.
I had my suspicion’s when he did “My Dingaling”.
I bet if we could peek behind the curtain of the secret lives of all his rock-star peers we would find that his behavior wasn't that uncommon.
Facts, ask def leppard lol.
Based on what special knowledge? Just as likely, just as many choose to lead uneventful lives- within their means, within the parameters of the law. Being a doped-up, tax-evading, high-rolling, skirt-chasing rake comes with a lot of drawbacks.
@@unassistedsuicide2243 I'm not defending him. I'm just saying most of the "rock-stars" you might admire are likely to be just as bad in most ways. That's just my personal judgement call based on publicly available information, no special knowledge required.

@Ralph Owen lol..sure. So how about all of those tens of thousands of SUPER BIBLE TRAINED priests, rabbis, and other clergy men raping little boys and girls since the inception of the dogmatic, foolish practice of MAN MADE religion?? Seems to me that your "religion" has a HUGE hand in letting these p.o.s. move from one parish to another, to simply rape again. Man made religion is the true scourge of our society.

So happy to see a CGS video pop up in my notifications. Blimey! I had no idea that Berry was that depraved. I do believe that the work of artists is separate from their creator, but it may be a while before I play any of his stuff again. Cheers Mike, another good one. Happy New Year brother.
Hey brother! Good to see you man. I enoyed this. WOW! And I thought I had issues..... I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year! Take care.
My cousin played bass and toured as Berry's bass player for 15 years and always got paid.
We all a little fuked up.
If you want a black rocker to admire from it's earliest days, and without ANY of the trash and baggage that seemed to plague so many of the others, give Fats Domino a listen. Never heard the first negative thing about Fats, ever. He lived a clean life and was devoted to his wife and children, it wasn't an act.
"The balls to show Chucks berries" WTF LOL
Happy new year, Mike! Thanks for coming up with new content ( even if this is quite disturbing- oh, Chuck!) Sending you best wishes from the USA.
I was actually just thinking about you Mike and its great to see you back. I've followed your vids for about 3 years and never commented before but just wanted to show you a little support and say how glad I am to see you on screen again and still fighting. I hope 2023 is kind to you

This is the man who wrote the lyrics "We boogied in the kitchen
We boogied in the hall

Or how about his song: "My Ding-a-Ling". Listen to it if you haven't ever heard it, tells you all you need to know about what was always on his mind.
Great to see you back mate and looking good.

Pot is no big deal, as long as it isn't done before or during work. (Only drug I ever done, smoked it four different occasions, wasn't for me)And yes, I think that was the only drug Chuck ever done. I don't think he done any other drugs. Afterall, the man lived 90 years! Chuck Berry was one of the first millionaire Rocker rollers. He rather sleep in his car instead of pay for a motel room. He had vices, as many of us do. But I really think his vices were women by the abundance. Lol, I read this stuff about 20 years ago. But I'll bring up something positive to end this text. He gave credit where credit is due. He said his rock character was just a Rosetta Tarpe impression. She ofcourse was a talented ax slider playing in the gospel circuit. Hopefully he found peace 🎸
Great to see you again been a while, keep strong, my thoughts are with you.👍
Hope you're well Mike! Berry sick person! Thanks

Despite being a wierd dude and a rough cut cat, he is probably one of the greatest pioneers of modern rock.
modern rock?
@@lennon1482
Yes, modern meaning sometime after the 50s... when distortion and fast lead riffs were being emplemented..so yeah, he was a big influence on modern rock, I hope that makes sense, and I believe thats what the original post meant.
You still hear Berry's licks in guitar solos today.
No mention of Jerry Lee, Wyman, Glitter & a cpl hundred other rock stars tastes?
He was a pioneer of Rock & Roll.
I am a HUGE FAN of Chuck Berry but I have a really hard time believing the same guy that wrote "My Dingaling" also wrote "You Never Can Tell", "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man", "Little Queenie" or "Sweet Little 16".
While I do NOT condone his Sexual stuff, it's just the same as many great Rockers.....Bill Wyman for instance. To me, it's their MUSIC that's important. We need to separate the man from the music, or soon there will be no legends left.
Yeah the woke will end us.
That's a funny way of saying "all my heroes turned out to be garbage people."
Ignoring the personal stuff from their music makes it more dangerous and people willing to look the other way.

Always liked Chuck's music and he was the first real guitar hero however he did have a very dark side.

Does anyone find it ironic that Chuck had secret cameras set up in the women’s restroom in a restaurant called Southern Air?
So good to see you again.
It's always struck me as odd that people tend to expect that accomplishment in any artistic endeavour means someone will be free from the foibles and nastier aspects of human behaviour. Artists are just as capable of being crappy people as anyone else.
nope. we are not talking about faulty human behavior. we are talking about pedophilia, child pornography, voyeurism and a list of criminal actions. together with, yeah, a crappy human being when not busy breaking the law.
@@angeltcmusic1 Did you even read what I wrote? I referred to "the foibles and nastier aspects of human behaviour", not "faulty human behavior". Chuck wrote the book on R&R, but he did, in fact, leave a pretty deprived life. Must have troubled his precher father.
I knew all that stuff years ago. Didn't care then and still don't.
Chuck Berry = Rock ‘n Roll. No Chuck ? No rock. It’s pretty simple. We all have issues for crying out loud. 😎🇨🇦🎸
bull crap....ever hear of howlin wolf
Berry was busted in Salem va for trying to peep into women's bathroom. I don't belive he wrote those classic songs he is credited. I belive his piano man wrote them as he claimed in a law suit. I don't belive he is credited any authorship after a certain period, which would indicate he wasn't the prolific writer he'd have you belive he was .
Johnnie Johnson. He filed a lawsuit that was dismissed which is a dam shame. It was Keith Richards that implored him to seek song writing credits.
Johnnie only helped write the music, not the lyrics. Chuck did that.
He was the hey day's R.Kelly
Great documentary bud !
I knew there were issues, but I didn't know how many! Good to see you again!
Long list of them, including John Peel who said he had girls as young as 13 lining up to be abused and he was only to happy to oblige. Elvis, Jackson, Glitter, Lewis, Dylan, Bowie, list goes on and on.
I can’t get the image of Chucks Berries out of my head.

I don't care...he is on the Mount Rushmore of rock and roll.
Really shouldn't surprise anyone.
I’m willing to bet that most rock star men from that generation did the same thing. Gerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Page to name a couple and 90% of groupies were girls in their early teens.
Mike, great to see you. It's always a dilemma in these situations to know if you can listen tot heir music still knowing their personal life.
I'll never forget afternoon TV show, mid 70s (either Merv Griffin or Mike Douglas) had Berry on: "we boogied in the kitchen, we boogied in the hall, she boogied on my finger so I wiped it on the wall". He even motioned with his tongue and finger. The producers did not seem to know what he meant. I did. I was eleven. Saw him at the Ontario Place Forum two summers later. He could still do the duck walk. Man knew how to work a crowd. Too bad about the perv-cam. He tarnished his legacy.
There was a British documentary in the 70's that Chuck was interviewed for and filmed during a tour (I think)...may have been BBC...I saw it in the late 70's and since then I haven't seen or found anything I searched...Anyone have any ideas where I can find it?...There was an incident where Chuck is asked about his run in with the law and Chuck walked out saying something along the lines of 'this isn't what we agreed to talk about'...My guess is that the interviewer saved this until they had enough footage and Chuck had already signed for the documentary to be aired once it was recorded...It was a fascinating insight and the music was brilliant (I remember because I recorded the music on my first cassette player)...Anyhow...Big Chuck fan here...Saw him in concert and then have visited his grave and his St.Louis home since he passed...From the UK
Chuck got busted for installing cameras in the ladies bathrooms of restaurants he owned in Florida

Ciao Mike. 👍
Hail hail rock n roll.
I watched Cadillac Records last night on DVD for the first time in years. It's a great movie that every fan of Chess music stars should see. I don't know about Chuck, but Muddy, Wolf, Walter... came from very impoverished environments. I doubt any of them spent much time in school as children and I suspect their upbringing was typically harsh for the time. I don't believe Chuck was as bad as the stories would have you believe. Sure he made some mistakes and some bad calls, but in that time of racism and social decay, these very creative artists had no real formula to follow as to how to behave in 'high society'. And high society judged them harshly for it.
Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf were actually mostly Native American (Indian) by blood. In their days they resided in Southern regions where the populations were more African-American because Native Americans had better and safer lives living in those communities.
Berry would even make Borat blush and think he is a creep
Wishing you the very best for the new year Mike.
Unfortunately the old rockers like Chuck and Jerry Lee Lewis were undoubtedly not people you'd invite to the family bbq.
However even in the 60s and 70s Jimmy Page, Aerosmith etc also have admitted relationships with young girls.
Truth is probably somewhere in the "middle." It usually pans out that way. Also bear in mind the overt anal retentiveness, double standards, & racisms.of his era. Chuck wasn't a saint, but to me he's the original R & R man! He played by his own rules!
And I don’t listen to them either…
rock n Roll means "STREET SEX." Sex, drugs and rock n roll have always been an open truth, and proud brag among rock n roll people. Little Richard totally backed up all this just before he died. The Beatles who loved Chuck Berry, said Little Richard was the TRUE first person to invent and play rock n roll. Richard agrees and always has. Richard believed in homosexual orgies and drugs as a lifestyle and sang about it. His lyrics were so filthy the radio could not play his songs without changing some words. This is according to Little Richard himself. Women absolutely love this most debased music , sex, drugs and gladly called themselves groupies and made fan clubs to Rock n rollers.
To think a track of his is representing mankind to any distant space life to hear it when they pick up on that long distant satellite we sent out years ago. At least it’s just his music, and about 4 or 5 of his tracks were very good. The others were just a reshuffle of the same old stuff.
