    Im old school with my tools and knives. I dont abuse them, and I cringe at the people who insist every knife should be able to baton and then complain when their blade snaps. But I'm a fan of Joe X. He shows knives to us in a different light and gives us a much better idea of their limits and capabilities in an extreme survival scenario. He provides data nobody else wants to pay for. Not to mention he's funny as hell. ✌🏼

    Huge fan of Joe X. He really provides a perspective that was needed. Look how many people trashed Cold Steel because of the abuse they put their locks through. Yet we see even Joe X couldn't destroy a few of them. The more expensive manufacturers are pissed because companies like Cold Steel and Esee are outperforming knives of far higher cost. Honestly, I was going to buy a Busse Team Gemini Ultra Light until I seen the video. The Operator 7 performed far better and the Esee 5 and 6 were phenomenal at a 5th of the price. I am going to stick with my Esee's.

    This is what Cliff Stamp used to do, and he was almost universally hated and despised. I say this as a friend of Cliff. We still have his old forum up and running if anyone wants to read his old reviews, and his UA-cam channel should still be up. If I recall correctly, the Busse knives are the only ones that Cliff said he couldn't break.

    I love Joe-X, I really miss Nas-X. What actually happened to him? I believe that they serve a vital role in the industry as you detailed. They literally cut through the hype and show just how tough a particular knife is, and steel is. Joe has totally exposed the difference between old Cold Steel and new Cold Steel. Shame on Cold Steel by the way. Busse is and always has been a grail knife for me and a 100% class act as a company, since the first time I saw a Steel Heart advertised on the back cover of a Soldier of Fortune magazine. Good take on JoeX. First defense is he paid cash for knife, it’s his. End of story. It’s fun to watch him break knives. He is creative and seems to be enjoying himself. Gear guys get butt hurt if you talk about their chosen equipment and anything they’ve invested in. Always been that way, always will be. Anyways I hope more people stand up for him and what he does. I own half the knives he’s broken, hasn’t changed one thing about how I feel about them or how I use them. I sat and held my Apocalypse and my DBK knife while I watched him destroy them on screen. That hurt to watch but it was entertaining nonetheless. I don’t think criticism will slow him down, in the least. He probably doesn’t need to be defended. But you did a good thing making this video.

    I think JoeX values durability over everything, and doesn’t value the aspects of a knife that make it a good cutting tool. I think that is what may rub some people the wrong way.
    He also makes a show of being as disrespectful of brands or knives he doesn’t like as possible. I think some of his fans in the comments take it as gospel as well that if a knife breaks easily in abusive tests that it must be crap or a rip-off, which is kind of mis-informed opinion because it doesn’t account for how well a knife does it’s job as a cutting tool, that might piss people off more.
    That being said, I’m really glad he tested some Busse knives, it’s an old knife-maker’s trick to grind a knife impractically thick, then chop a nail in half and cut a piece of paper afterwards to show the edge is undamaged as a demonstration to sell knives at a fair or knife show. That’s essentially Busse’s marketing strategy with a mysterious proprietary steel thrown in as a justification for high prices.
    It’s really satisfying to see a $500 Busse (It did really well until it was stone time, but he did cut through a car door) do worse than an $80 Scrama(Which also is a fantastic cutting tool as well). JoeX does a service to the knife community because he routinely dismantles the marketing lie about durability demanding a premium, and shows instead the cheap knives usually make the best beaters.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  9 місяців тому

      I do think Joe X is testing toughness above all which is fine- I hope to be able to, and I hope the community also, takes his content and gives it some context talking about size, weight, force, bte measurements, etc.
      The character he plays is brash and crude and I understand people not liking that. He is doing what he loves so I'll take it!
      I am glad for the same reasons that he is doing what he is doing. All the fake toughness marketing of the 90's is a plague and Montana knife co started doing it to.
      I think cheap knives in many cases make better beaters because they are thinner and made of tougher steels. (420hc, aus8, and 12c27 are FAR tougher and better than they get credit for) but it doesn't take into account all the other things that do make an expensive knife good.
      So I agree with you all around, I'm glad we have him, and I'm glad I'm not the one doing his job because it looks like a TON of work!
      My hats off to the guy.

    It’s the brand loyalists who hate reviewers like Joe X the most. I like Joe’s reviews even though I would never use a knife like that. He exposes the b.s. used by marketing departments of knife companies who claim to be hard use or indestructible. When Nas broke a CRK, Bladeforums Chris Reeve fanboys lost their minds. When Cold Steel showed how poorly the frame lock on a Sebenza performed, same guys lost their minds. Why wouldn’t they? They paid $500 for a highly overrated knife. They are nice knives, I own some myself so I’m not a brand hater, but they are also way over priced.
    DBK does some fair reviews as does Cedric in Australia. Most knife reviewers are actually doing table top overviews, which are fine but they aren’t tests.

      The experience you have on bladeforums can REALLY depend on what section you are in.
      All it takes is to be in one little spot on bladeforums and have ONE guy who ringleads that spot for you to have an awful experience there.
      When I was on bladeforums back in the day I had all kinds of trouble in the Becker section because TM Hunt decided he didn't like me and so far as I know continues to slander me to this day.
      However my experience in the Busse forums have been FAR superior.
      I think they key is to not engage- when someone shows that they are clearly toxic you can just hide them- hide the whole lot if you want- poof, problems gone.
      I had to do that to 2 people who literally would say any retarded thing just to be pissy. It's not worth trying to "win"- that's what they want you to do.

    With most modern knives being at least sufficient enough for 95% of tasks, including many cheapo brands, after liking a design I really base my purchases on wether or not the maker has a good character and his values. This test would have never exploded the way it did if Busse hadnt run his gig like a pseudo - cult, with censorship and big ststements. Its understandable then that the usual Busse buddies would get so defensive and that folks would also be so quick to jump at their throats. Shame, really, because Busse decided to double down on the INFI cult instead of just reinforcing their strengths, which in my opinion are ergos, great handles and the best cheaper beaters, the Scrap Yards.

    Funny the love is love people are blocking freedom. Collectivist thinking is the opposite of freedom forcing the joining of group all their inclusivity is exclusivity: group member first individuals second, group status first talent second. Irony is they generalize and marginalize a group while saying they stand against generalizations and for marginalized groups. They prioritize a certain type usually chosen by race, gender, and political discrimination and they don't value what they deem to be "other" to itself. All their words about love ALL, freedom, change is about self-branding NOT truth - just the virtue signal, selfish, humble brag pretense buzzword club. Group member first Individual (the smallest minority) second, others need to be worth less for them to be worth more, while they tout war rhetoric about crumbling walls melting pieces and talk of a new world order which shows who is really marginalised. The cancel mob needs to monopolize the words they are NOT as they destroy.

    My problem with joe isnt that hes destroying knives, its the way he goes about it makes different knives look like crap. When he doesnt take into account any variables. Take for example.. some knives he will slice up a car where its thin metal and easy to cut through, others he will go for much harder spots. Or try to cut glass..and glass will win its harder than steel. Or he'll take one knife with geometry built to take serious abuse and then others that are thin and not meant to really be super abused. It just ends up making knives look bad when theyre fine knives for what they are.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  10 місяців тому +4

      Thats fair enough- but I think that's where community can come in.
      I know some brands and people send him knives that are purposefully thickened and convexed at the edge.
      I'll be sending him if I can a knife with a thin edge same as any other, and I intend to never have a production knife with an edge over .035 regardless of the size of the knife. Maybe none over .030

      JoeX did his own thing. We could all see how the knives held up to his crazy a$$ testing. I will miss his passion, humor and how hard he pushed all the blades. Almost none of his tests were about how normal people use knives, and that is great. There are lots of channels with people making feather sticks ect. We got to see everything be broken and that was valuable in its own way. Long live JoeX and may the companies that brought him down live in shame and infamy!

    @SmilingGator96 10 місяців тому +2

    I think a lot of the hate comes from an outdated belief system where if something costs more money, it should be a better product. Also, if you drop $500 on a knife (idk how much busse costs), most people are too scared to actually use their knife, but they have a false idea that it'll never break on them because it costs so much. Some of these companies prey on that idea and know that very few people are actually going to beat on their $500 knives enough to break them.

  • @I_Might_B_Wrong
    @I_Might_B_Wrong Місяць тому +1

    Do people not realize that you can like slicers and other knives that would break when abused and ALSO like watching some goof beat knives to death for fun? I'd be willing to bet that Joe X himself appreciates a nice slicer that wouldn't survive his abuse but is a joy to use for cutting, but it's just not what he gears his channel towards.

    My problem with joe X are his conclusions. He likes a worktuff gear Arius better than an Coldsteel SRK. By communicating this to mostly uneducated viewers he changes their opinions on what makes a knive a good knife. They start to buy knifes with way to thick behind the Edge thicknesses because Joe X says it holds up the best and he likes it. In the end they have sharpened prybars and also another problem is that the market, because of the demand for way to thick knifes, makes more and more of them. Your desings stand out because they dont do this (exept the workhorse what is a different cup of tee). So in my opinion the Videos themself might be good but he fails to educate the viewers.

If I wanted to duplicate his tests, it's impossible and thus it is empirically worthless. He doesn't understand that smacking a Mora against a pipe doesn't produce the same force that a much larger and heavier blade will. So the force is not the same.
