Thanks for this Harry. I love your videos. For your info, I wasn’t able to watch live, so it was particularly helpful that you read out the comments & advice from other watchers, because they aren’t on the UA-cam version of this chat.
Hallo Harry, I am Stefan from Germany ( i life near Leipzig). Since one year I follow your Videos and I really enjoy them, especially because of year Wonderful friendly personality. when I got 50 two years ago I made myself a Birthday present and bought a sewing mashine. Half a year later I recognized that I Need an industrial cylindre arm sewing mashine with waking Food. I found a bautiful Pfaff. So I startet sewing with leather. I appreciate sitting in front of my mashine and having a homebrewed beer.
I use good tape on the bottom of my foot on my Singer machine. It stops the marks. I like the ideas you mentioned but I don't have a professional walking foot machine. Thank you for sharing this info.
For what it’s worth, I believe Tandy Leather only have their Manchester store left in the UK. They shut their Northampton store a while back. I buy some of my leather from DLB Leather, a travelling supplier. I’ve found them very helpful, but I don’t know how far they travel out from their base in Hertfordshire in the South East of England. Might be worth a look online.
Hi Harry I bought my Seiko compound feed sewing machine a couple of weeks ago and I am going to be a while learning how to use it well. Was having problems with marking and tried the hammer idea even before seeing your video. I found the hammer then highlighted the impression of the wallet card cutout shape under the facing leather piece. What size and type of needle and thread do you use on your wallets? I am blown away with the tools and machines you have collected.
I've been having bad luck with the bobbin/down/back (whichever wants to call it). Where the needle plunges down into top side looks great, but the bobbin side looks awful especially with tooling veg tan. The bobbin thread slices through the hide between stitch holes. It's very ugly. I can't really reduce the top tension anymore without causing loops on the bottom. Some people have suggested wetting the leather and helped a little. I'm thinking maybe something like good old tear away stabilizer or paintier's tape on the bobbin side just might do it right.
Hi Harry, What is the definitive word on a sewing machine for the first time buyer? I am going crazy trying to decide which make and model to buy. Any recommendations?
With a walking foot, one foot holds the leather down as it is stabbed by the needle, but the needle does not walk forward and pull the leather through, it just goes up and down..with needle feed the needle walks forward stabs the leather and drags it through ...it's a really effective way of dragging the leather through the sewing process.
Difficult but options include using a diamond file to take the bite off the teeth...obviously less effective transit, also lower the feed dogs...still transit implications.
There is really only one place to buy leather : www.metropolitanleather.com These guys really know there stuff and have one of the largest ranges of veg leather in the UK

Hi Ian...I suggest you make sure the wallet T piece has a narrow body...I use a fairly fine needle and nm60 thread.
I use AA Crack in Northampton - excellent leather supplier!

Very sharp high quality needles such as schmetz, experimenting with different points may help. I liked RTW diamond points. Good luck.

Hi Harry, I need to buy next feet for my Adler walking foot machine, can you recommend someone for good copies, thanks
I have bought a number of feet for my Juki from China via EBay, and they are very good.
What is the difference between needle feed and walking foot?
