We love stories of restoration and historical preservation which was why we were super excited to be the first ones to stay in The Rowe House in Gettysburg. The Rowe House is located right in the middle of Gettysburg on East High Street and saw a lot of back and forth action as Union and Confederate troops swept through the town. Note: One of the risks that I run in showing up to a place to film is that my first impression may not always be the correct one. After some reflection, the spots in the brick that I attributed to battle damage were the wrong spots. Please forgive any mistake that may have been made on my part.

At Valley Forge Military Academy we had to make our bunks using the same folds. They called it "hospital corners". The unfortunate side effect is that throughout my marriage I've been designated the "expert bed maker" with predictable consequences. Great video JD.
Ha! Maybe I don't need to learn it then.
It's just as well you get the bed making duty. Cause, once you learn to do those tight beautiful corners; nothing else will suffice. We both (retired vets)still fold clothes, underwear, socks and towels the military way. I guess some things are just better organized doing this.
Unfortunately growing up education for me and my sisters wasn’t thought to be by my parents very important. I have learned so much after school and some college and love learning also. But what I like about you is you retain what you’ve learned and I’m afraid I don’t. I do remember people and that some of the things that the people go through and other things but you just have an ability I don’t have and I love it. Thank you

JD’s introduction about history being everywhere in Gettysburg reminded me about our family trip to Gettysburg four years ago…we were in the supermarket in town, and my 10 year old (at the time) son comes up to me with a package of Reynolds Wrap, and insisted that I take a pic of him holding it because General Reynolds had been there!! It was so cute to see him enjoying the “irony”.

Howdy JD! That house is gorgeous. They did a masterful job furnishing/decorating it. Those bed blanket folds are called “hospital corners” as I learned in Marine Basic Training. Thanks for the tour. 🙏🏼

Thank you! I just returned from Gettysburg--inspired by your videos. The buildings that have been preserved truly do so battle damage. The whole place got shot up. I'm from a premiere tourist town in the U.S. (that everyone knows about) and Gettysburg has been as well preserved and is as neat as any historic town in the U.S. To all: If you are thinking of visiting Gettysburg, study up on the battle (History Underground videos and Battlefield.org) and stay in-town at a B&B or Air B&B if your budget allows. My experience was very good.

When I learned to make a bed, I was told that this fold was called "hospital corners ". That was in the early 60s. I don't know why though. Great video, as always.
In nursing school you are taught to make many different types of bed options. Hospital corners are crisp, tight and look awesome! 🥰
My mom and her younger sister were candy stripers in the mid 60s and learned to use hospital corners. It's how I learned to make a bed. :)
We still do hospital corners in healthcare today. ;)
My mother in law is a nurse and she taught her kids “hotel corners”. Same thing from the look of it. Very cool.

It is incredible how all these small places have so much packed inside of them. It's great how the whole town just understands its prominence in history and how people such as ourselves cannot get enough. For the fold on the bed, tightly tuck sheets under foot of bed and then tuck each side under mattress folding at the foot of the bed. Something grandma taught me.

The hits just keep coming. Nice Air BB. I like the exposed brick also. My brick cottage was built in 1939. We had our screen porch turned into our kitchen. Left the exposed brick and stucco arches on the inside. Along with the old Clay Tile on the floor. Turned out pretty nice if I say so myself. Love these off the beaten path places. Nice work JD.

I love the hospital corner made bed. I also did it in basic training. My mom always made beds this way as she was a nurse during her professional days. Thanks for sharing

Love this series.
If you notice, the brick wall had the original wood stove/kitchen to the left still in place, but filled in. The back side of that wall had the Caboose style wood stove that was piped into the same chimney.

Very nice place. I like how they highlight all the old original parts of the house and the history. The one bummer that would be for me is that it is pretty much, other then the peaks of the old bits of house, it is decorated pretty much modern. But that is just me. I love the warm colors they used to have, not into all the shiny white, black and gray scheme that is popular now. Still it would be interesting to stay here.

Your comment about their bed corner folds was funny because my Mom was VERY serious about her hospital corners on all our beds growing up! I could bounce a quarter on mine! 🤣🤣

Absolutely beautiful house & love how while its a modern design they also kept an eye on the details of the past. Its a perfect combination of both & leaving some of the original brick work exposed made this house even more unique.
Those corners of the bed are hospital corners. Back in the 50's and 60's the nurses would make the beds and use those corners to keep the patients tight in the beds so they didn't roll out of bed.

I must apologize for my other comment. I appreciate the author's diligent research and am pleased to learn this information. I'm a retired history prof, and sometimes I'm too critical of things that appear not in keeping with the historic setting. I congratulate the author for showing some of the rare photos and detail, especially that of the Louisiana Tigers. I guess I just still expect nineteenth century music to complete the picture.

It’s been awhile. I’m trying to catch up in the series of Gettysburg. I can’t remember where I left off. This was fascinating seeing how this home has survived since Gettysburg n to see the bullet holes still there. I was a little disappointed in the way they changed this house around to accommodate it being a bed & breakfast place. I do realize you have to up date appliances n all. They did well in the kitchen but that bathroom not so good. I’m so sorry to be so picky but if I’m going to Gettysburg n stay In a house that stood in time I want to feel apart of it. Just voicing my opinion. I’m sure there’s many out there who could careless what I think. The best part is listening to you with all your wonderful knowledge . You are a great host. ♥️😊👍👍

11:55 That is a STRONG selection of movies. The place looks awesome. I absolutely love that one can stay in any number of homes that were there during the battle. In the last few years I've stayed at the Tillie Pierce House, The Farnsworth House, Herr Tavern and Joel Danner Home and it is really quite special. So many more to explore.

What a lovely restoration was so tastefully done very impressive, a place to consider when l can revisit Gettysburg hopefully next year been there 15 years consecutively till COVID, you think you know it all that you go and show us something new, l stay at The Brafferton Inn one year that was nice the newer hotels are ok but no character.

Love the place, that little bit of history exposed throughout the home. Glad to see that some Louisiana boys were represented in Gettysburg! I lived near Gettysburg off South Mountain. I have a real appreciation for the history of the area and so glad they saved the house. It wasn’t meant to be a children’s museum but that’s my opinion. That being said most of the house was great. I think they could’ve addressed the decorating with more authenticity tho. The 4 poster bed was beautiful but the main suite was lacking as were the carpet choices. I have relatives nearby who restored a house nearby that was much more faithful to the era

They did a beautiful job of restoration, but was thinking, why they didn't have more period furnishing. Thinking it over, this is not a museum it's a B and B made for comfort, museum pieces would not work in this situation. They certainly had thought by leaving important touches, the exposed brick, art, pictures, and history. Thanks JD, great series.

11:41 I hate to be nitpicking but that particular photo is of the fighting at the Hagerstown Turnpike at Antietam. I can see how people would think is the MX Berg Road but they would be jumping the other way. I will see myself out!
For real though that’s a great place to stay I just stayed in a cheap motel. I’m surprised you haven’t done the battle of Antietam yet. You should go to the 60th anniversary of Antietam this September. They are opening the knew Antietam national battlefield exhibit.
